Opis:
Iodine deficiency is a common phenomenon, threatening the whole global human population. Recommended daily intake of iodine is 150 μg for adults and 250 μg for pregnant and breastfeeding women. About 50% of human population can be at risk of moderate iodine deficiency. Due to this fact, increased iodine supplementation is recommended, through intake of iodized mineral water and salt iodization. The aim of this study was to investigate permeation and absorption of iodide from iodine bioplex (experimental group) in comparison with potassium iodide (controls). Permeation and absorption processes were investigated in vitro using a porcine intestine. The experimental model was based on a standard Franz diffusion cell (FD-Cell). The iodine bioplex was produced using Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast and whey powder: iodine content - 388 μg/g, total protein - 28.5%, total fat - 0.9%., glutamic acid - 41.2%, asparaginic acid - 29.4%, lysine - 24.8%; purchased from: F.Z.N.P. Biochefa, Sosnowiec, Poland. Potassium iodide was used as controls, at 388 μg iodine concentration, which was the same as in iodine-enriched yeast bioplex. A statistically significant increase in iodide permeation was observed for iodine-enriched yeast bioplex in comparison with controls - potassium iodide. After 5h the total amount of permeated iodide from iodine-enriched yeast bioplex was 85%, which is ~ 2-fold higher than controls - 37%. Iodide absorption was by contrast statistically significantly higher in controls - 7.3%, in comparison with 4.5% in experimental group with iodine-enriched yeast bioplex. Presented results show that iodide permeation process dominates over absorption in case of iodine-enriched yeast bioplex.

A vapour permeation of water and ethanol through homogenous chitosan and alginate membranes was investigated. The influence of the polymer matrix and crosslinking agents, and measurement protocol on the transport properties were discussed. The conducted experiments showed the greater separation factor, better stability and resistant to solvents for chemically crosslinked membranes. On the other hand, stronger association of the matrix, than the physical, caused decrease of vapour fluxes.

Water seepage is one of the most important features of embankment dams. To prevent and reduce seepage, it is necessary to seal the dam. Plastic concrete cutoff walls are one of the most efficient methods in waterproofing the foundation of embankment dams on permeable alluvial substrates. Sufficient resistance to loads, low permeability to maintain dam sealing, high ductility compatible with the foundation and deformation under load without cracking are the main requirements in plastic concrete cutoff walls. In this paper, the construction and implementation of the cutoff wall of Karkheh Dam, which is one the world's largest water sealing projects, was studied. In addition, a numerical model using Seep-3D software was developed to evaluate the efficiency of the cut-off wall to decrease the seepage over the dam's foundation. The numerical results validated by instrumentation statistics resulted from 17-years dam operation. According to the results, after the drainage of the reservoir, the cutoff wall optimally reduced the hydraulic gradient by 0.08 from 2.35 and the water leakage by 3.1 m/s from 18.3 m/s.

Opis:
Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) composed of the substances generally recognized as safe (GRAS) were obtained by using a hot high-pressure homogenization technique (HPH). The influence of the number of homogenization cycles and concentration of a decyl glucoside surfactant on the NLC properties were studied. The system's stability was assessed by macroscopic observation, light backscattering and zeta potential measurements. NLC particle size was measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The kinetically stable formulations were loaded with forskolin and selected for in vitro drug permeation study using the Franz cell method. Concentration of forskolin in the receptor solution (i.e. ethanol/PBS mixture) was analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection. The obtained results have shown that NLC formulations could be used as effective carriers for forskolin permeation through the skin.

Objectives The objective of the work was to determine the resistance of selected protective clothing and glove materials to permeation of cytostatics such as docetaxel, fluorouracil, and doxorubicin. Material and Methods The following glove materials were used: natural rubber latex (code A), acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (code B) and chloroprene rubber (code C). In addition, we tested a layered material composed of a non-woven polyester (PES), a polypropylene (PP) film, and a non-woven PP used for protective coats (code D). The cytostatics were analyzed by liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The tested samples were placed in a purpose-built permeation cell modified to be different from that specified in the standard EN 6529:2001. Results The tested materials were characterized by good resistance to solutions containing 2 out of the 3 selected cytostatics: doxorubicin and 5-fluorouracil, as indicated by a breakthrough time of over 480 min. Equally high resistance to permeation of the third cytostatic (docetaxel) was exhibited by natural rubber latex, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, and chloroprene rubber. However, docetaxel permeated much more readily through the clothing layered material, compromising its barrier properties. Conclusions It was found that the presence of additional components in cytostatic preparations accelerated permeation through material samples, thus deteriorating their barrier properties. Membranes were prepared using three chitosans with different molecular weights and degrees of deacetylation. The influence of chitosan features on membrane physicochemical properties, i.e. degree of swelling, contact angle and tensile strength, as well as membrane separation properties in ethanol dehydration by the vapour permeation process are discussed. The conducted experiments showed that an increase in the chitosan molecular weight led to an increase in the membrane surface contact angle concomitant with a decrease in the material selectivity coefficient. On the other hand, an increase in the chitosan degree of deacetylation caused a reduction in ethanol and improved the water permeate flux. There was greater selectivity in the test process for membranes prepared from chitosan with the lowest molecular weight.

Resistance of antichemical clothing primarily depends on the type of material it is made from, in particular on the type of polymer used for coating the fabric carrier. This paper reports on systematic investigations on the influence of the cross-linking density of an elastomer and the composition of a cross-linked elastomer on its resistance to permeation of selected organic solvents. Tests of barrier material samples made from nonpolar butyl rubber (IIR) and polar hydrogenated butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber (HNBR) showed that (a) in rubber–solvent systems with medium thermodynamic affinity, cross-linking density influenced resistance to permeation and (b) the polarity of the system had a significant influence on barrierity.

Two O/W forskolin-loaded nano-emulsions (0.075% wt.) based on medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and stabilized by a nonionic surfactant (Polysorbate 80 or Polysorbate 40) were studied as forskolin delivery systems. The nano-emulsions were prepared by the PIC method. The mean droplet size of the nano-emulsions with Polysorbate 80 and Polysorbate 40 with oil/surfactant (O/S) ratios of 20/80 and 80% water concentration, measured by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), was of 118 nm and 111 nm, respectively. Stability of the formulations, as assessed by light backscattering for 24 h, showed that both nano-emulsions were stable at 25°C. Studies of forskolin in vitro skin permeation from the nano-emulsions and from a triglyceride solution were carried out at 32°C, using Franz-type diffusion cells. A mixture of PBS/ethanol (60/40 v/v) was used as a receptor solution. The highest flux and permeability coefficient was obtained for the system stabilized with Polysorbate 80 (6.91±0.75 µg · cm-2·h-1 and 9.21 · 10-3±1.00 · 10-3 cm · h-1, respectively) but no significant differences were observed with the flux and permeability coefficient value of forskolin dissolved in oil. The obtained results showed that the nano-emulsions developed in this study could be used as effective carriers for topical administration of forskolin.

Because they cause burns that are difficult to heal, acids are dangerous, and steps should be taken to ensure that the human skin does not come into contact with them. For this purpose safety gloves are generally used by workers who have to handle acids. Such gloves need to be tested to ensure that they are acid resistant. Standard EN 374 (European Committee for Standardization [CEN], 1993c) specifies a method of testing the permeation of liquid chemicals, on a molecular level, through glove material, but it may be difficult to ensure the fitness of the joints of a 4wo-compartment cell, when gloves are lined with jersey. To deal with this a simple pH-meter method to test the permeation of acid and alkali solutions through safety gloves has been developed. The permeation of H2S 0 4, HCI, HN03, and CH3COOH through gloves made from neoprene, nitrile, and PVC was tested. This method seems to be simple and economical.

Opis:
This article presents the science output regarding percutaneous transport mechanisms, penetration promotors and the methods of active substances skin absorption enhancement. The interaction between cosmetic ingredient and skin cells determines efficiency of the product. The study presents the most important functions of the skin outlayer (stratum corneum), its structure (Fig. 1) and permeability [1–7]. Due to the compact structure, stratum corneum prevents skin water loss. Moreover, it protects human body from outer substances influence [8–12]. Relationship between compound properties and its ability to skin absorption was also described. Physicochemical properties like lipophilicity, compound structure and particle size have a significant influence on intensity of the compounds skin penetration [4, 16–25]. Lipophilicity of a molecule is defined using many theoretical and experimental methods which allow to predict cosmetic ingredients assimilation [26–42]. Moreover, cosmetic base composition [43–47] and the presence of the penetration enhancers (promotors) also affect active ingredients absorption through the skin [48–49]. The most popular equipment used for testing the absorption and the penetration of active substances through the human skin are described in the last part of the manuscript. Compounds permeability through the skin could be tested using various experimental methods [50–58] including the diffusion cells equipped with membranes or prepared skin fragments [37, 55, 64–67]. The most common used are Franz diffusion cells (Fig. 4) and flow diffusion cell (Fig. 5). The measurement of permeation through stratum corneum using ATR -FTIR method is quite reliable and simple (Fig. 8), although measuring skin penetration is made by Saarbrucken penetration model (Fig. 6) and by application of Tape Stripping technique (Fig. 7). The study of skin absorption mechanisms and factors influencing this process is a great opportunity to design efficient cosmetic recipes and a possibility to make more effective, active cosmetic ingredients.

Opis:
Polymers derived from renewable sources which are additionally subject to degradation processes are currently an interesting alternative to conventional polymers of petrochemical origin. One of such polymers is poly(lactic acid) (PLA), which can be used in the packaging, textile and also medical industries. Its great advantage is the susceptibility to biodegradation and the nontoxicity of the degradation products. Because of high brittleness and stiffness, the modification of PLA is necessary to improve its plastic deformability, which can expand the new application possibilities. As part of the research work, the modification of PLA by plasticisation was undertaken to improve its plastic deformability properties. The low molecular mass esters from the citrate group and glycerol triacetate were used. The samples extruded from plasticised polymer were characterised using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Gel Permeation Chromatography/Size Exclusion Chromatography (GPC/SEC). The mechanical properties and melt flow rate after modification were determined. The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between the structure of a plasticiser and its ability to reduce the interactions in the polymer chain in order to develop an optimal polymerplasticiser arrangement. Based on this research, there was no relationship between the efficiency of the plasticisation process and the increasing molecular mass of the plasticiser. The additional chemical (acetyl) group in the plasticiser also does not increase the efficiency of the PLA plasticisation process. In the next steps of the research, functional forms will be produced, i.e. fibers, films, and fittings from the selected polymer-plasticiser systems.

The current method for testing the barrier properties of materials used in production of clothing protecting against permeation of chemical substances involves the contact of the investigated material with the test chemical under static conditions (with the material sample mounted in the testing device so that it is not exposed to any stresses and consequent deformation) (Figs. 1-2). However, the situation in which protective clothing is exposed to chemicals without any movements resultant from the user’s activity and affecting the clothing material can rarely be encountered under the actual conditions of use. The paper presents the test methods of barrier material properties, with a particular focus on the equipment used to contain samples of the test materials in the process of substance permeation (Tab. 1). It is demonstrated that movements of the glove material such as bending during exposure to a chemical substance may affect the results of permeability tests (Figs. 3-5). The publication contains general information concerning the proposed equipment solutions for testing barrier materials (Figs. 6-8), which, in contrast to the methods used to date, enable deformations of the material sample, simulating the dynamic conditions in which protective clothing is used.
