This essay addresses issues of periodization, with a specific focus on the importance (or overvaluation) of the reconstruction of the Polish State and its effects and consequences on contemporary Polish culture and literature: in fact, 1918 was perceived as a turning point and as an ideal boundary between an old and a new era. At the same time, different opinions about the “limits of modernity” in Polish culture and literature were discussed, emphasizing the longue durée of such cultural macrophenomena as the “romantic paradigm” or “Sarmatian” mentality and their significant impacts on the processes of continuity and discontinuity of culture. Searching for a merely literary explanation for the periodization of this first troubled period of the “short century”, the author stresses the importance of two texts by Julian Tuwim, Spring (1918) and You All, Go Kiss My Ass (1938), which feature all the euphoria of the beginning and the drama of the end of the period. The article also offers an initial attempt at an Italian translation of the Tuwimian Poem in which the author politely but firmly implores the vast hosts of his brethren to kiss his ass.

Abstract: Understanding the essence of national character is necessary to correct understanding of social reality. Due to various determinants (external and internal), people develop at different rates, intervals and directions. The character – a set of psychological, spiritual and mental traits, which are revealed in the way of behavior, being, life and functioning – reflects the true nature of man. It is also an asset of innate norms and attitudes that constitute the foundation of human personality. The author of the article concludes that the nature of the individual units reflects the nature of entire nations. It is their nature that determines the nations to select the civilization course. In the article, the author presents selected historical syntheses (characteristic of particular ages), then confronts them with Roman Dmowski’s political thought, which – according to the author – manifests itself in timelessness and recent nature of its assumptions.
Zrozumienie istoty charakteru narodowego jest konieczne dla człowieka do prawidłowego pojmowania rzeczywistości społecznej. Ze względu na różne czynniki (zewnętrzne, wewnętrzne) ludzie rozwijają się w niejednorodnym tempie, z indywidualną częstotliwością i w odmiennych kierunkach. To właśnie charakter – zespół cech psychicznych, duchowych, mentalnych, które ujawniają się w sposobie zachowania, bycia, życia i funkcjonowania – odzwierciedlają prawdziwe ludzkie oblicze i jego naturę. Charakter to również zbiór wrodzonych norm i postaw, które stanowią fundament osobowości człowieka. Autor artykułu doszedł do wniosku, że charakter pojedynczych jednostek odzwierciedla charakter całych narodów. To właśnie determinuje narody do obrania kursu w rozwoju cywilizacyjnym. W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane syntezy historyczne charakterystyczne dla danych epok, następnie skonfrontowano je z myślą narodową Romana Dmowskiego, która zdaniem autora, przejawia się ponadczasowością i aktualnością w swoich założeniach.

Nor just the division of life into separate periods, but the creation of a theory that would explain why the individual life is divided into periods in a certain way. The article presents changes in the education of economists in Poland, referring in particular to the experiences of the Poznań University of Economics and Business and its institutional predecessors in the years 1926-2016. The aim of the article is to analyze the contemporary framework of the university as a commercial enterprise versus the classical integrity of the academy, related to Humboldt’s conception of a university. The analysis includes an approach to the modelling of educational programmes in economics, starting from serving the needs of the immediate business environment in the inter-war period to education according to the standards of the university which conducts research and educational activities within the system in harmony with the Bologna Process. Proposals of an analytical approach were also formulated in connection with dilemmas concerning the organization of a university and its organizational units which differ in their substance, quality and personnel. The concluding part expresses the opinion that although transformations of academic culture are multidirectional and complex, the present times have witnessed a final dismantling of the classical academic culture and which takes on the shape of the corporate culture of businesses operating in the market economy, dominated by economic calculus and the application of competition rules. It is important to ensure that the humanistic values of science and higher education as the mainstays of universitas are not lost in the processes of rationalizing and reforming the structures of universities of economics.

The author tries to locate the interwar period in the context of language periodization. She presents two previous approaches: the one of Z. Klemensiewicz, S. Urbańczyk and S. Dubisz who included the years 1918–1939 into Modern Polish period and the other of A. Furdal, T. Smółkowa, and S. Borawski who considered the year 1918 as the beginning of the new epoch in the history of Polish language. The author’s proposition is to focus on the evaluation of Polish language in the years 1918–1939, instead of looking for a borderline between the Modern Polish period and contemporary one. The main reason for connecting the interwar period with the contemporary one and not with the Modern Polish period was the radical change in the use of language. The re-establishment of the Polish state triggered fast process of integration. It was the result of the state policy of language and development of mass communication.

The article is an attempt to divide Jabłoński’s output into phases according to Mieczysław Tomaszewski’s concept. In line with the assumptions of this concept, in the composer’s biography there are turning points and a return that defi ne his creative path. General characteristics of Jabłoński’s creative path can be divided into three phases. Stylistic caesurae of the phases become essential in pointing out the pivotal moments that defi ne the course of evolution of Jabłoński’s oeuvre. The path leads from the infl uence of neoclassical aesthetics in his early works, through the experience of aleatoric and sonoristic techniques of controlling the musical material, up to simplifi ed textures and stylistic features revolving around the sérénité climate. In the phases of the evolution of Jabłoński’s output presented here, specifi c features of his musical language are pointed out. These are connected with his individualistic approach to the issue of tonality. The composer developed and enriched his musical language, but only with such elements of new techniques that did not disturb the creative path he had taken earlier. His attempts to merge traditional forms with 20th-century compositional techniques only served the purpose of fi nding new timbres and sound qualities. The author of the article emphasises the importance of the melodic element in Jabłoński’s works, where expressivity and emotion are anchored in the expression of the romantic spirit of beauty.

Bez wątpienia pytanie o istnienie filozofii i filozofów w Bizancjum uchodzi dzisiaj za anachroniczne. Mimo to wiele problemów narosłych wokół samej bizantyjskiej filozofii ciągle nie doczekało się jednoznacznych rozwiązań i objaśnień. Wieloznaczne znaczenie, jakie nadawali Bizantyjczycy uprawianej przez siebie nauce, uniemożliwia zamknięcie jej w jedną definicję. Dociekania chronologii, periodyzacji tudzież autonomii bizantyjskiej filozofii również nie oferują spójnych rozstrzygnięć, nie wspominając już o dyskusji nt. kryteriów, jakie współcześni badacze winni przyjąć w realizowanych badaniach naukowych na tym polu. W obliczu znikomego zaangażowania uczonych w sprawy tworzonej w Cesarstwie Wschodniorzymskim filozofii, nadal wiele istotnych kwestii wymaga przebadania. Niektóre z nich, czyli znaczenie bizantyjskiej filozofii, jej ramy czasowe, autonomię oraz periodyzację, postaramy się krótko omówić w świetle współczesnych badań.
Undoubtedly, the question of the existence of philosophy and philosophers in Byzantium is today considered as anachronistic. Nevertheless, many problems accrued around the Byzantine philosophy itself, did not live up clear solutions and explanations. The meaning given by the Byzantines of the science they studied, as ambiguous, makes it impossible to close it into a single definition. Inquiries of chronology, periodization, and the autonomy of Byzantine philosophy also do not offer consistent conclusions, not to mention the discussion about the criteria that modern researchers should adopt in their research in this field. It is not surprising, therefore, that in the face of the insignificant involvement of scholars in the affairs of the Eastern Roman Empire philosophy, many important issues still need to be explored. Some of them, it means the importance of Byzantine philosophy, its time frame, autonomy and periodization will be briefly discussed in the light of contemporary research.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę finansjalizacji przemysłu wydobywczego węgla kamiennego w Polsce. Na przestrzeni ostatnich dekad branża ta stawała się coraz bardziej powiązana z globalnymi kanałami finansowymi. Jednocześnie w literaturze przedmiotu coraz częściej akcentuje się finansjalizację zasobów naturalnych. Planowane przekształcenia własnościowe przemysłu węglowego sprawiają, że powyższa tematyka zyskuje na znaczeniu. Celem artykułu jest analiza procesu finansjalizacji w branży wydobywczej węgla. Autor na początku opisał występujące w literaturze przedmiotu definicje, przyczyny i przejawy finansjalizacji. Następnie autor dokonał periodyzacji finansjalizacji branży węglowej oraz wskazał na możliwy dalszy przebieg. W artykule zastosowano analizę opisową przy wsparciu podstawowych metod statystycznych (analiza dynamiki).
In this paper the author examines the subject of financialization of the hard coal mining sector in Poland. In recent decades this industry has been becoming more strongly connected to global financial flows. At the same time financialization of natural resources is becoming accented more often in literature. Planned ownership transformations in the coal mining industry are causing this subject to become more relevant. The aim of this paper is to analyze the process of financialization in the coal mining industry. In the beginning the author describes definitions used in specialist literature, as well as, causes, and displays of financialization. Then the author periodizes financialization of the coal industry, and points at its possible development. In this article descriptive analysis was used with support from basic statistical methods (analysis of dynamics).

The main aim of the text was to determine the beginning and the end of the nineteenth-century in Russia in the field of socio-political thought. Both the initial turning point and final turning point were chosen with intention to facilitate the understanding of specificity of Russian socio-political thinking in the age of last five tsars. The article presents the position that it’s useful not to adapt the periodizations well known and well-established in contemporary historiography. These are often too universal, good for description of general image of socio-political debate in the industrial era. However, one needs different, more specialized concepts if it comes to grasp the details which make Russian nineteenth-century socio-political mentality unique and developing with its own logic.

This paper studies the historical background of the formation of the Persian Islamic school, which was formed largely based on the pre Islamic traditions of the Achaemenids and Sassanids. Insufficiently explored aspects concerning the architectural periodization of Iranian mosques were identified. This gives arguments as to how external factors influenced the formation of the Islamic architectural school of Iran; it was shown how elements of pre-Islamic Persian architecture were organically incorporated into the architecture of the Persian iwan mosque. The relationship between historical and architectural periods, between each architectural period and the types of building materials and structures was analyzed. The process of transition from a purely structure- and functionality-oriented to decorativeness and monumentality was presented.
W artykule przeanalizowano podstawy historyczne powstania perskiej szkoły islamskiej, która w znacznej mierze została oparta na przedislamskich tradycjach Achemenidów i Sasanidów. Zidentyfikowano niedostatecznie zbadane aspekty periodyzacji architektonicznej irańskich meczetów. Przedstawiono argumenty, w jaki sposób czynniki zewnętrzne wpłynęły na powstanie islamskiej szkoły architektonicznej w Iranie. Pokazano także, jak elementy architektoniczne przedislamskiej Persji zostały organicznie włączone do architektury perskiego meczetu typu „iwan”. Przeanalizowano również związek między okresami historycznymi i architektonicznymi oraz pomiędzy każdym okresem architektonicznym a rodzajami materiałów i konstrukcji budowlanych. Zaprezentowano, jak odbywał się proces przejścia od czystej konstrukcji i funkcji do dekoracyjności i monumentalności.

The article offers an overview of the history of Polish language from the 9th century up to the present moment. The development of the Polish language was informed by two processes, namely, linguistic diversification, which caused dialectal differences, and integration, which contributed to the constitution of the literary language. The first half of the 16th century constitutes a critical period in the evolution of Polish language. It is then that the inception of the literary language took place. Here, the invention ofprint turned out to be a communicative breakthrough, predominantly because it facilitated language integration. Consecutive stages in the history of Polish language were connected with historic events, like the loss of Polish independence and its regaining. Such events brought about changes in the status of Polish language. The most recent period in the history of Polish language begins in 1989, when vital socio-political changes, as well as the information technology revolution took place. It is also the timewhen the integrative processes intensified, and began including geographical, as well as stylistic linguistic variations (predominantly, by the expansion of colloquial Polish into other functional varieties of the language).

At the same time, the author of the article brings our attention to a special status of the contemporary modernist studies, which do not try to change the paradigm, but rather are organized by gestures of corrections and reconfiguration – thus they are subject to the mode of turns in the modern humanities.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawić ujęcie poszczególnych okresów biblijnego Izraela, które zawiera Pochwała ojców (Syr 44 – 49) Księgi Syracha. Na początku autorka zaznacza kontekst i granice tekstu przyjętego do analizy. Następnie pokrótce przedstawia ogólne wprowadzenie do Pochwały ojców (Syr 44,1-15). Kolejne części artykułu stanowią propozycję periodyzacji, która składa się z trzech części: etapu przymierza (Syr 44,16 – 45,26), etapu proroków i królów (Syr 46,1 – 49,10) oraz etapu odnowy (Syr 49,11-16). Całość zamyka apendyks, który stanowi wypełnienie wcześniejszych etapów historii w osobie Szymona II, arcykapłana świątyni jerozolimskiej (Syr 50,1-24). Periodyzacja dziejów obecna w Pochwale ojców, oprócz chronologii jest prezentacją, w której można zauważyć podejście teologiczne, kanoniczne i kapłańskie.
The article aims at providing a perspective on the successive periods of Biblical Israel as found in the Praise of the Ancestors (Sir 44–49) in the Book of Sirach. The writer begins with determining the boundaries and context of the analyzed text. She then presents briefly a general introduction to the Praise of the Ancestors (Sir 44–49). The next parts of the article offer a proposal for periodization, consisting of three parts: the covenant period (Sir 44:16–45:26), the period of the prophets and kings (Sir 46:1–49:10), and finally the renewal period (Sir 49:11-16). The full text of the Praise is rounded out by an appendix which concerns the fulfillment of all the previous historical periods in the person of Simon II, the high priest of the Jerusalem Temple (Sir 50:1-24). The periodization of history in the Praise of the Ancestors, besides providing chronology, is a presentation that might be described as a theological, canonical and sacerdotal approach.
