Opis:
One of the aims of the European Commission (EC) activities is to introduce uniform rules for the environmental performance assessment based on the life cycle assessment method (LCA), which can be widely used e.g. in eco-labeling, assessment of goods, services, technology, etc. Therefore, from 1 November 2013 the European Commission implemented a pilot phase of the project on developing common methods for measuring the environmental performance of the product and organisation, aims to develop guidance documents in this field. The pilot phase includes development of the Category Rules relating to the calculation, verification and communication for environmental footprint of the 25 categories of products and two organizations. Therefore, the article presents the principle of environmental performance based on life cycle assessment in relation to the objectives of the proposed methodology of environmental footprint.

Opis:
In connection with the ongoing activities of the European Commission (EC) for the unification of the product market and the development of common methods for measuring environmental performance over the life cycle of products and organizations, guidelines for the environmental footprint methodology are being developed. Among the guidelines developed so far at European level, there are no guidelines for the energy sector, including the hydrocarbon extraction sector. Despite the lack thereof, it is necessary to start the preparatory stage now for their possible future introduction due to threats to the competitiveness of Polish enterprises and the competitive position of a given product on the market. In the 2013 Communication, the European Commission proposes two methods for measuring environmental performance. One concerns the environmental assessment of products, while the other concerns the environmental assessment for the organization. The article discusses the possibility of using the Life Cycle Assessment method (LCA) to assess the products environmental footprint (PEFs) and organizations (OEFs) related to oil and gas sector. LCA is considered to be one of the most objective and accurate methods of environmental assessment and its main purpose is to reduce negative environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle. The traditionally understood product life cycle includes stages, ranging from obtaining raw materials, through processes related to transport, production, to the use and post-use phase of a given product. Currently in Poland, LCA is not a widely known (practiced) tool, which is why there is a need to increase the involvement of the science sector (research, R&D and consulting centers) in order to encourage Polish enterprises to become interested in the issue of environmental life cycle assessment. Thanks to the LCA method, it is possible to assess the ecological effect of changes planned in the organization in various areas of its activity (technological, administrative, infrastructural). LCA may also be part of a strategic, multi-faceted analysis of the efficiency of the Polish oil and natural gas production sector.

Opis:
Closest point of approach (CPA) is a basic factor taken into consideration for risk assessment during the meeting of two ships at sea. Navigators should use radars with automatic target tracking for collision avoidance and should know the accuracy to which radar data are calculated. Basic information about these requirements can be found in IMO resolutions. The currently binding document for devices manufactured after 2008 is IMO Resolution MSC.192(79). But there are two independent requirements for relative motion. One of these refers to relative motion parameters (relative course and speed) and the other one to the value that is the result of this motion (CPA). The other important document is Standard 62388. This specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements, methods of testing and the required test results published by IEC and also refers to radar equipment. However, this standard is not so popular in different publications focusing on radar equipment, so these requirements were not analyzed in the article. The main problem described in this paper refers to the mutual consistency of IMO Resolution requirements. The results of simulations and their analysis are presented.

The paper presents the results of case study analysis conducted to assess the benefits of system implementation. The research was carried out in Polish recruitment company. We assessed the benefits of recruitment system implementation using the perspectives of a Balanced Scorecard and, in particular, the modelling and measurement of the main processes of recruitment. We designed indicators of the organization’s performance and we measured them before system implementation (as-is state) and after possible implementation (can-be state). This procedure allowed us to determine changes which the recruitment system could make, and also permitted to take a final decision on whether to invest or discontinue planning implementation.

This paper presents the outcome of a pre-project that resulted in an initial version (prototype) of an automated assessment algorithm for a specific maritime operation. The prototype is based on identified control requirements that human operators must meet to conduct safe navigation. Current assessment methods of navigation in simulators involve subject matter experts, whose evaluations unfortunately have some limitations related to reproducibility and consistency. Automated assessment algorithms may address these limitations. For a prototype, our algorithm had a large correlation with evaluations performed by subject matter experts in assessment of navigation routes. The results indicate that further research in automated assessment of maritime navigation has merit. The algorithm can be a stepping stone in developing a consistent, unbiased, and transparent assessment module for evaluating maritime navigation performance.

A systematic approach to occupational safety and health (OSH) management and concepts of knowledge management (KM) have developed independently since the 1990s. Most KM models assume a division of knowledge into explicit and tacit. The role of tacit knowledge is stressed as necessary for higher performance in an enterprise. This article reviews literature on KM applications in OSH. Next, 10 sections of an OSH management system (OSH MS) are identified, in which creating and transferring tacit knowledge contributes significantly to prevention of occupational injuries and diseases. The roles of tacit knowledge in OSH MS are contrasted with those of explicit knowledge, but a lack of a model that would describe this process holistically is pointed out. Finally, examples of methods and tools supporting the use of KM in OSH MS are presented and topics of future research aimed at enhancing KM applications in OSH MS are proposed.

Opis:
Although the usefulness of alternative assessment in second language (L2) classrooms has been extensively recognized by scholars, the use of the various types of alternative assessment in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts has not received adequate attention by L2 practitioners. To contribute to this line of research, the present research sought to examine the impact of a portfolio-based writing instruction on writing performance and writing anxiety of EFL students. To this end, a number of 41 EFL learners were recruited as the participants of this study. They were then randomly divided to an experimental group (N=21) and a control group (N=20). The participants in the experimental group received portfolio-based writing instruction, whereas the control group received the regular writing instruction with no archiving of students’ drafts in portfolios. Timed-writing tasks and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) were employed to collect the data. The results obtained from ANCOVA analysis revealed that the portfolio-based writing instruction aided the participants in improving their writing performance more than the control group. Moreover, it was found that the use of portfolios significantly reduced the L2 writing anxiety of the participants while the traditional writing instruction did not have any significant impact on L2 writing anxiety of the control group. The pedagogical implications for portfolio-based writing instruction are discussed finally.

Current development trends are driving ubiquitous sustainability requirements, pushing organizations to achieve new sustainability goals and targets. To this effect, continuous and continual performance measurements are the key to any business-related success. Therefore, the sustainable performance of an organization can be defined as the performance that takes a long time to achieve its goals. The outcome is a well-balanced balance of context, strategy, management processes, resources, and intangibles especially since it is closely related to the notion of sustainable development (TBL). The goal of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, a systematic literature review is conducted to highlight the importance and the need to assess the three pillars of sustainability and, finally, to encircle the sustainability concept by identifying the most used techniques and approaches in its evaluation. This paper can be considered as basic support for future studies in the application of sustainable performance measurement/assessment systems.

Aim. Research to date acknowledges the learning, instructional and assessment advantages of self-assessment used in different fields of study in higher education contexts, yet little known research has focused on its use for learning and raising learner awareness while studying English for Specific Purposes (ESP). To this end, the present small-scale study examines the use of self-assessment of philology students’ ESP oral performance at a university in Lithuania. Method. The data for this research was collected from undergraduate students’ written reports on their project presentations on the chosen ESP topics. To analyse the data, qualitative methodology of inductive content analysis was used. Results. The study resulted in the identification of five major dimensions covering problem areas in the students’ ESP oral performance. The findings indicate that self-assessment enabled the students not only to identify some gaps and difficulties in their ESP oral performance that call for action but also to establish the reasons which caused them, foresee how the gaps can be closed or the difficulties coped with. Furthermore, it allowed the students to make decisions that reached far beyond the self-assessment task. The results also demonstrate that self-assessment raised the students’ awareness of themselves as learners by giving them direction on how to perform better in the future. Conclusion. Self-assessment, as used in the present research, proves to be a valuable tool both for the students of ESP and their teachers as it reveals areas in the students’ performance that call for improvement, which enables ESP teachers to support their students to achieve better results in the future.

We have analyzed results of the Brazilian National Student Performance exam, applied by the Ministry of Education, to verify overconfidence in students. Looking at 549,487 student-level observations, we estimated an overconfidence score, comparing the perceived performance with the actual grade in two different parts of the exam. Ordered logit models suggest that overconfidence in Brazilian students is positively correlated with income and that overconfident students took less time to complete the exam. Contrary to previous studies conducted in other countries, male students presented lower overconfidence in our sample. Moreover, performance was inversely related to the overconfidence score, indicating that students with better performance “know more about what they do not know”, as already widely discussed in the education literature.

We compared their self-assessments to their teachers’ assess- ments. Results show that the students’ self-assessments on average deviate from their teachers’ assessments. We also noticed that the Dunning-Kruger effect is present both for seminars and mathematics classroom performance. The students that received low assessment scores from their teacher provided too high self-assessment scores.

Simulator-based training has become an integral part of Maritime education, and its effectiveness hinges on the use of appropriate assessment protocols. Despite the existence of several subjective and objective assessment techniques, instructors face difficulties in selecting and implementing the best practices that fit different learning contexts. The contextualized utility of the available assessment techniques further complicates the contexts. This study adopts a systematic literature review approach to comprehensively analyse available assessment techniques employed in maritime simulator training and to elicit their relationship with the desired learning outcomes. The study also presents a nuanced understanding of the advantages and limitations of the identified assessment techniques. Further, the state-of-the-art of assessment methods is discussed along with a few proposals for the future considering both research and practical implications. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable guidance to maritime instructors in selecting and implementing appropriate assessment techniques that align with desired learning outcomes in simulator training.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of speed, agility and power performance during one soccer season and the impact of functional fitness on changes in motor performance in elite female soccer players. This study was conducted with 18 members of the Polish Women's National Football Team. The analyzed training season was divided into four training phases. Physical performance was assessed by a test of quickness - the 5m sprint, tests of maximal speed - the 30 m sprint, test of agility L-run test and tests of lower limb explosive power - counter movement jump (CMJ) and counter movement jump with arm swing. Functional fitness was assessed using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). Individual functional training as well as a training plan based on FIFA 11+ prevention were utilized. The analysis showed significant improvement in the CMJ test (F=3.02, p<0.05) and FMS score (F=5.959, p<0.01) during the in-season. Other parameters of physical performance were stable during the evaluation period. Positive correlations between baseline FMS score and changes of athletes' 30m sprint performance (r=-0.48, p<0.05), total in-season change of FMS score and total inseason change of 5m sprint performance (r=-0.53, p<0.05) were observed. Female soccer players during the in-season demonstrated a relatively good level of physical performance which corresponds to their particular training phase. Functional fitness intervention appears to be an effective way of improving speed, acceleration, and power performance in elite female soccer players.
