Trzyczęściowe wspomnienia Etli (Edwardy) Bomsztyk (1899–1973) są świadectwem o szczególnym znaczeniu, zapisem losu kobiety, Żydówki, służącej. Dwie części – jedna opublikowana w języku żydowskim w 1959 roku, druga nagrana w języku polskim w roku 1966 i przechowywana w Archiwum Akt Nowych – dotyczą działalności politycznej autorki: organizatorki związków zawodowych pomocy domowych w Warszawie w okresie międzywojennym, członkini Bundu i KPP, wreszcie – więźniarki politycznej. Trzecia relacja, spisana po polsku w roku 1953, zachowana poza kontekstem instytucjonalnym i nigdy niepublikowana, jest świadectwem bardzo osobistym: opowiada o dzieciństwie w żydowskim miasteczku, przyjeździe do Warszawy, nędzy i cierpieniu, pierwszych lekturach, osamotnieniu i buncie. Celem artykułu jest ujawnienie napięcia między opowieściami dotyczącymi politycznego zaangażowania a narracją o doświadczeniach, które stanowiąc podglebie owego zaangażowania, pozostawały zarazem niewypowiadalne w ramach praktyk dyskursywnych wypracowanych przez ruch komunistyczny.
This paper presents three autobiographical accounts by Etla (Edwarda) Bomsztyk (1899–1973), a Jewish house maid. Two of these unique testimonies (one published in Yiddish in 1959, the other recorded in Polish in 1966) focus on Bomsztyk’s political activity. This activity encompasses organizing domestic servants into unions in Warsaw in the 1920s, membership in the Bund and the Communist Party of Poland, and political imprisonment. The third account, written in Polish in 1953 and never before published, sits outside any institutional context. This consists in a personal narration on childhood in a small-town Jewish family, migration to Warsaw, poverty and suffering, first readings, loneliness and revolt. The aim of this paper is to reveal the tension that exists between these three texts. That is, between two accounts of political militancy on the one hand, and with early experiences that, though a prerequisite for Bomsztyk’s later political engagement, nevertheless could not be fully articulated within communist party discourse.

Celem artykułu jest wykorzystanie krytycznej analizy dyskursu do badań nad  polskim dyskursem o historii. Autor dokonał analizy aktualnych książek poświęconych tej tematyce, które ukazują nowy obraz tej części historii Polski. Opracowanie potwierdza, że nowa narracja zawiera krytyczny punkt widzenia na polskie elity, redefiniując obrazy klas wykluczonych. Ponadto w artykule przedstawiono, jak na podstawie analizowanego materiału nierówność i wyzysk wpłynęły na obecne stosunki społeczne.
The aim of this article is to use Critical Discourse Analysis on research about newly born polish discourse about people’s history. The author analysed current books concentrated on that subject which reveal new image of this part of Polish history. The article shows new narrative contains critical point of view on polish elites, reconceptualising images of excluded classes. Furthermore the article shows how inequality and exploitation effected on present social relations according to analyzed material.

In the last decade, India has witnessed a resurgence of Maoist movements. At the same time, the country’s polity has been rocked by various protests against displacement by local population. These protests have commonly been referred to as people’s movement. In some cases, both, Maoists and people’s movements have overlapped and thus raising the question about people’s agency and Maoists’ role in it. This essay posits the question: who is this people? The assumption is only by exploring the answer, questions pertaining to autonomy or agency can be answered. The essay takes the case of Lalgarh movement, West Bengal, where adivasis rose up against the state, police atrocities. Subsequently Maoists came into the picture. In exploring the debate, mentioned above in the context of Lalgarh, the essay studies a set of letters written to civil society, issued by an organization on behalf of adivasis. The essay finds that the issues of agency must be reconceptualised as subjectivity. Instead of finding a pure voice of adivasis, it is subjectivity as process that helps us to grasp politics of the people. The paper finally argues that the process of becoming people is congealing of adivasis as a political collective.

The article discusses Piotr Kurpiewski’s book Historia na ekranie Polski Ludowej [History on the screenof Polish People’s Republic]. Kurpiewski uses the concept of the politics of history to show the relationship between Polish postwar films and their political context. He examines the production process of individual films from the moment of their making to the moment(s) of their reception. From this point of view the historical film becomes one of the main ideological instruments, serving to legitimize the then sociopolitical regime.

The aim of the following article is to present how the Armed Forces of the Polish People's Republic reacted to the second pilgrimage of John Paul II to Poland. It outlines multiple processes, mainly of social origin, which occurred during the preparations for the visit, its course and after its completion. Moreover, the author depicts political and cultural circumstances in which soldiers and conscripts had to serve. At the same time, numerous manipulation techniques that were used to discredit the Catholic Church have been included.

Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o dostęp kobiet do realnej władzy w komunizmie w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej, na przykładzie Polski. Autorzy przyglądają się PZPR w latach 1948–1989 pod kątem liczebności i znaczenia kobiet. Analizując dostępne źródła, pytają o faktyczny zakres władzy sprawowanej przez kobiety, jej charakter, wreszcie – modele „karier” kobiecych przewidziane w PZPR. Piszą o regresie w tzw. polityce równouprawnienia, który cechował się „zatrzymaniem się” karier kobiet na poziomie niskich stanowisk, brakiem realnych karier po stalinizmie (gdy zabrakło pokolenia przedwojennych działaczek komunistycznych) oraz faktem, że partia komunistyczna nigdy nie wprowadziła skutecznych mechanizmów awansu dla kobiet.

Foreign visits by state delegations constitute a regular component of international relations. The case of Poland in the Stalinist era was no different in this respect, even though the foreign visits were usually limited to the democracies of their fellow comrades. Among such numerous visits made by the Polish officials of the time, one is of special interest to us. This was a party-governmental visit to the People’s Republic of China and the Mongolian People’s Republic, held from 24 September until 13 October 1954. The pretext for the “friendly visit” were the celebrations of the fifth anniversary of the rise of the People’s Republic of China, held on 1 October 1954. The invitation was issued by the Central Government of the People’s Republic of China, and addressed exclusively to representatives of the Communist states and parties. The four–member Polish delegation was headed by the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (henceforth as PUWP) Bolesław Bierut and it also included a Member of the Political Office (Politburo) of the Central Committee of PUWP, deputy prime minister Jakub Berman, deputy prime minister Stefan Jędrychowski and the vice-president of the Council of the State Stefan Ignar. It was the first visit by top-ranking Polish Communist officials in China, which would not have been possible without the prior reshuffle in the Soviet Union’s political regime after the death of Joseph Stalin. This article presents the course of events of the above–mentioned, exotic visit as reported by the press articles in “Trybuna Ludu” [People’s Tribune] – the major press title of the Central Committee of PUWP. Our analysis of these press reports, sent with a two-day delay via a correspondent of the Polish Press Agency, shows which facts relating to the event were highlighted by the journalists.

In 1969 an interdisciplinary committee for long-term forecasting was created at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Together with the central planning authorities, statistical offices and every branch of government it constituted a system of prognostication which remained legally in place between 1971 and 1976. This article regards prognostication as an institutionalized experiment based on one of the key myths of modernity – that future events can be known and shaped. The genealogy of long-term forecasts in Poland dates back to pre-war experiences with state planning and transnational transfers of knowledge since 1956. After an outline of its pre-history, this article describes the construction and programmatic ideas of the prognostic system and asks how its functioning affected participants’ understandings of the future as a political category. Finally, this article makes the case that this state-run prognostication venture resulted in an amplitude of euphoria followed by frustration regarding future knowledge, which can be understood as an indirect but significant cultural symptom of the emerging political and economic crisis in the Polish People’s Republic beginning in 1976.

This article discusses the moral dimension of history writing in the opposition milieus during the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). It focuses on the works of two dissident historians who dealt with untold or contested aspects of Polish contemporary history: Krystyna Kersten and Jerzy Holzer. First, the essay describes the narratives about the values and experiences shared in the PRL context by people belonging simultaneously to the intelligentsia, opposition dissidence, and academia (professional historians), with a special emphasis on the discovery and search for the truth under positivistic premises. Secondly, it analyses the counterfactual questions posed by Kersten and Holzer in their bestseller underground books about post-war politics and the trade union Solidarity’s legal period, respectively. The reflections that these two scholars developed about pasts-that-didn’t-take-place provided a complementary ethical component to their discourses concerning decision-making processes and Polish society’s political agency. The idea of losing, the ultimate inevitability of defeat, and the way that defeat was faced in two different moments of Poland’s recent history are tackled by Kersten and Holzer with an educational goal: to explain to readers that, however minute the range of choice is, ethics, together with remembrance, plays an important role in social consciousness and empowerment, and hence can make a crucial difference in the long run.

Autor skupia się na polskiej muzyce bigbeatowej z lat 60. i początku lat 70. XX wieku. Analizując teksty wybranych utworów z tego okresu, wskazuje na występujący w nich autotematyzm – prezentuje różne sposoby, na jakie wykonawcy bigbeatowi wypowiadali się w piosenkach o swoich słuchaczach, o samych sobie i o muzyce młodzieżowej jako zjawisku. Wykorzystuje przy tym zarówno utwory popularnych zespołów, jak i mniej znanych, lokalnych grup. Rozważania umieszczone są w szerszym kontekście społecznym i politycznym, a źródła muzyczne uzupełniono cytatami z ówczesnej prasy, wypowiedziami polityków oraz organizatorów życia kulturalnego. Autor wykazuje, że autotematyzm obecny w tekstach piosenek bigbeatowych świadczy o sporej samoświadomości polskich artystów w omawianym okresie.
The author focuses on Polish big-beat music from the 1960s and early 1970s. He analyzes the lyrics of selected songs from that period, pointing to their self-referential nature and explaining how big beat performers described their fans, themselves, and teenage music in their songs. Songs by both popular and less known local bands are analyzed. The analysis functions in a broader social and political context, and the study of lyrics is further supplemented with quotations from the contemporary press and statements by politicians, journalists, and managers. The author shows that the self-referentiality present in the lyrics of big-beat songs proves that Polish artists in the 1960s and early 1970s were aware of their lyrical and musical strategies.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to point to the aspect of subjective sense of personal causative power amongstfemale professors who held their seats during the People’s Republic of Poland. In her research, the authorseeks an answer to the question whether the female deputies distinguished by their double role had a senseof subjective causative power, analysing their personal reflection expressed on the subject in availablesources. The research in a broader aspect contributes to the question whether women, especially thosewith a high professional and social status, playing political roles in the Real Socialist system had a real impacton changing the existing reality and whether their activity translated into specific normative decisions orsolutions of a permanent nature.
