Opis:
A collection of 360 oriented samples of igneous rocks from the western part of the Antarctic Peninsula (Argentine Islands Archipelago, Penola Strait area), has yielded well-defined palaeomagnetic directions. Age determinations by various methods showed a Late Cretaceous-Paleocene time interval for the rocks studied. The characteristic remanent magnetisation (ChRM) was isolated by a stepwise thermal demagnetisation mostly in the temperature interval 450-580 degreesC. It is evidently a primary magnetisation. The rocks along the coastline of the western part of the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) were emplaced during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron while the rocks from the islands with reversed polarity are of Paleocene. New Cretaceous (112-85 Ma) and Paleocene (60 Ma) palaeomagnetic poles for the passive continental margin of the Antarctic Peninsula fit well with a synthetic East Antarctica apparent polar wander path and confirms that the AP did not undergo latitudinal displacement for the last 100 Ma. The palaeomagnetic pole for 60 Ma shows a slight shift from palaeopoles obtained for the South Shetland Islands which implies that the South Shetland block is characterized by own tectonic evolution and probable anticlockwise rotation during the Paleocene.

The article presents the attempts of Polish coast defenders’ to get through to neutral countries by sea during military operations in September and October 1939. These efforts were made in spite of the German blockade of Polish coast by Kriegsmarine ships and Luftwaffe planes. This subject hasn’t been widely featured yet using the reports of coast defenders kept in Polish and foreign archives. The goal of this article is the systematization of knowledge about these facts, presentation of characters of sailors, soldiers and civilians, who didn’t want to go into captivity. Some of them were going to continue their struggle in Polish Armed Forces in the West.

The article presents the beginnings of alphabetic writing in Sinai (Serabit al-Chadim) in the context of the Egyptian hieroglyphic writing and the subsequent early alphabetic inscriptions from Wadi al-Hôl (Egypt) and Wadi Arava (Israel). In the light of the present state of research it can be concluded that the oldest alphabet (type: abgad) was established Semites working in the copper mines in Sinai under the rule of Egypt, probably in the nineteenth century BC. Direct effects on Semitic alphabetic writing had Egyptian hieroglyphs. Discovered in recent years alphabetic inscriptions in the Wadi al-Hôl and Wadi Arava turned out to be younger than the Sinaic inscriptions and are another element in the early development of alphabetic writing.

The article addresses the issue of relations between Rome and its provinces on the example of the community of legionnaires serving on the Iberian Peninsula. The legion service was not limited to the military aspect, which is manifested in the numerous mutinies of the soldiers. By juxtaposing the account of chroniclers of the period with the findings of contemporary historians concerning the causes of mutinies the author presents the material and social dimension of Roman expansion.

Opis:
Structural relief is exceptionally recognisable in areas where igneous and metamorphic rocks without a Quaternary cover occur, which is the case with the Kola Peninsula. However, the subject of structural relief has been addressed relatively rarely. Therefore, an attempt was made to estimate the influence of tectonic and lithologic factors on the relief within two test areas, each covering approximately 100 km2, located on the coast of the Barents Sea (Murmansk Terrane) and the White Sea (Lapland Granulite Belt). The structural relief here is varied, which results from differences in the geological structure. In the former area, depressions and tectonic blocks of varying size and order predominate, while east of Kandalaksha these are flattened hills with asymmetrically inclined slopes (having the character of cuestas). Although lithologically diverse, the test areas share a common feature: the presence of numerous faults and dislocation zones that in the case of the Barents Sea caused the division of igneous rocks into several blocks of various orders. Most of the relief forms in this area were found to have structural origins, namely valley depressions of various orders, slopes and escarpments, lake basins and seaside cliffs. The structural relief of the Murmansk Terrane is determined by disjunctive structures. In the case of the Lapland Granulite Belt, the relief of the analysed macroblock is closely linked with the formation and position of the rocks – this is escarpment relief.

This work discusses the issue of bracelets occurring in the Sarmatian period in the Crimea, known in archaeological literature as “bracelets with globular, conical, or pineal-shaped endings”. Basing on a group of 57 artefacts from Late Scythian and Sarmatian necropolises, as well as those dated to the Late Roman period, a typological classification of the items has been made. At the same time, on the basis of the chronological analysis of sets containing bracelets belonging to the discussed type, data allowing us to determine their chronological range have been obtained. The question of the provenance of such items, the issue of their occurrences in graves (taking into account the sexes of the buried persons), as well as the methods of wearing them, have been discussed.

The article is devoted to analysis of the Russian position on this issue of Korean reunification and how it is conceptualized on the divided peninsular. It uses a comparative analysis of North and South conceptions of the reunification process and posits that the conceptions of both sides are moving closer to each other by step to step. The USSR authorities supported all North Korean ideas on methods for Korean reunification, but did not approve of North Korean plans to escalate tensions in South Korea. In contrast, authorities of the Russian Federation prefer to conduct a pragmatic policy and pursue a policy of supporting peaceful and democratic processes towards Korean reunification. The Russian authorities are also attentive to the steps taken by South Korea regarding the North. Such a policy helps the Russian Federation preserve peace and the status quo on her Far Eastern frontiers.

In space, the Castreña culture was located in the north-western part of the Iberian Peninsula, whereas in time it stretched from the Late Bronze Age to the beginning of the Roman period. This study focuses specifically on the invention and use of the spinning bowl in the Castreña culture. Theoretical and conceptual tools will enable tackling this item with a rigid research methodology and help answer the question of why the invention of the spinning bowl and the innovations in processing of flax yarn production occurred, and how they were transmitted to other areas in the forms of innovation or technical loan. To explain its presence within the limits of this geography and chronology, the use of Linum usitatissimum L. is discussed. This specific raw material is closely related to the entire innovation process on the one hand, and on the other opens an avenue for research into its function within the technical chain of the creation of linen thread or yarn.

Opis:
A new plesiosaur partial skeleton, comprising most of the trunk and including axial, limb, and girdle bones, was collected in the lower Sinemurian (Coimbra Formation) of Praia da Concha, near São Pedro de Moel in central west Portugal. The specimen represents a new genus and species, Plesiopharos moelensis gen. et sp. nov. Phylogenetic analysis places this taxon at the base of Plesiosauroidea. Its position is based on this exclusive combination of characters: presence of a straight preaxial margin of the radius; transverse processes of mid-dorsal vertebrae horizontally oriented; ilium with sub-circular cross section of the shaft and subequal anteroposterior expansion of the dorsal blade; straight proximal end of the humerus; and ventral surface of the humerus with an anteroposteriorly long shallow groove between the epipodial facets. In addition, the new taxon has the following autapomorphies: iliac blade with less expanded, rounded and convex anterior flank; highly developed ischial facet of the ilium; apex of the neural spine of the first pectoral vertebra inclined posterodorsally with a small rounded tip. This taxon represents the most complete and the oldest plesiosaur species in the Iberian Peninsula. It is also the most complete, best preserved, and oldest marine vertebrate in the region and testifies to the incursion of marine reptiles in the newly formed proto-Atlantic sea, prior to the Atlantic Ocean floor spreading in the Early Cretaceous.

Sangjun JeongSeoul National UniversitySouth Korea Mending Wall? The War over History in South Korea Abstract: Until Korea was divided into North and South in 1945, it had maintained its territorial unity on the Korean peninsula for well over 1,000 years. Then, two young US officers drew an arbitrary line along the 38th parallel. Developing into a heavily militarized zone only several years later, ironically called the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ), that division has lasted for decades and into the present. Recently, several symbolic acts were performed in the zone and innovative plans were suggested to make the land strip into a peace park as a symbol of ideological reconciliation and ecological paradise. Yet to many Koreans, the zone is still inscribed as a wall permanently bisecting the peninsula not only physically but also culturally.  Through an analysis of Robert Frost’s poem “Mending Wall,” this article contemplates the divisions within South Korean society over the North –South divide as a war over the telling of history. This history, however told, must be understood alongside the sentiment of han, a Korean word loosely defined as frustration, anger, and sadness, something that has been shaped by centuries of suffering from wars, invasions, colonization, injustice, and exploitation. Keywords: Korean Peninsula, Political Divisions, History, War, Demilitarized Zone
