    We walk, we breath... we run and our heartbeat goes faster. Just like our body, also the body of the European cities in the last decades has trembled following the rhythm of the EU investments programmes as LIFE, URBACT or similar. Because public spaces are the mirror of a society and follow its rules, the new generation of EU urban programmes have been trying to involve citizens more and more in their planning phase. This article will focus on their development in Italy, presenting some examples where participation, public administration and designers well collaborated during the process, creating or renovating urban spaces devoted to the pedestrians.

    Opis:
    As a heritage site, Gulangyu has a unique character and importance in its community function. Most heritage sites in China are car-free destinations where walking is the primary mode of transport and a medium of interaction in residents' daily lives. This study investigates residents' perceived evaluations of the landscape environment and residents' walking behaviour using descriptive statistics, correlation and logistic regression analysis to derive relationship between landscape and walking behaviour. The aim is to derive the landscape factors that influence walking behaviour and improve the basis for enhancing the walkability of Gulangyu. The results show that function is most strongly correlated with purposeful walking. And the recreational walkers are influenced by a combination of function, safety, comfort, aesthetics and pleasantness.

    The ongoing period of the pandemic makes everybody focused on the matters related to fighting this immense problem posed to the societies worldwide. The governments deal with the threat by publishing regulations which should allow to mitigate the pandemic, walking on thin ice as the decision makers do not always know how to properly respond to the threat in order to save people. Computer-based simulations of e.g. parts of the city or rural area should provide significant help, however, there are some requirements to fulfill. The simulation should be verifiable, supported by the urban research and it should be possible to run it in appropriate scale. Thus in this paper we present an interdisciplinary work of urban researchers and computer scientists, proposing a scalable, HPC-grade model of simulation, which was tested in a real scenario and may be further used to extend our knowledge about epidemic spread and the results of its counteracting methods. The paper shows the relevant state of the art, discusses the micro-scale simulation model, sketches out the elements of its implementation and provides tangible results gathered for a part of the city of Krakow, Poland.

    In accordance with the assumptions of space syntax, spatial configuration shapes spatial patterns of pedestrian traffic. The influence of configuration (spatial relations) on, for instance, pedestrian route choice causes further consequences, making an impact on the land use pattern or providing opportunities to form social relations. The identification of the configurational features of space may, therefore, play a crucial role in the processes of urban planning and renewal. The goal of the study is to verify the assumed relations between the theoretical measures of space syntax and the actual pedestrian traffic. The study proves that theoretical indices are strongly connected to the real pedestrian traffic intensity. This fact confirms the value of space syntax methodology in the studies on the relations between the society and the built environment.
    W myśl założeń teorii składni przestrzeni, konfiguracja przestrzeni kształtuje przestrzenne wzorce ruchu pieszego. Wpływ konfiguracji (przestrzennych relacji) np. na decyzje o wyborze trasy przemieszczania się, rodzi dalsze konsekwencje takie jak obciążenie ciągów komunikacyjnych, możliwość nawiązywania relacji społecznych lub sposób użytkowania ziemi. Rozpoznanie konfiguracyjnych cech przestrzeni może zatem ogrywać istotną rolę w procesie planowania lub reorganizacji i odnowy struktur miejskich. Celem prezentowanych badań była weryfikacja zakładanych związków pomiędzy teoretycznymi miarami składni przestrzeni, a rzeczywistym ruchem pieszym. Wykazano, że wskaźniki teoretyczne pozostają w silnym związku z realnym natężeniem ruchu pieszego. Potwierdza to wartość metod składni przestrzeni w badaniach relacji pomiędzy społeczeństwem i środowiskiem zbudowanym.

    Artykuł dotyczy problemów związanych z kształtowaniem miejskich przestrzeni pieszych w małych zespołach mieszkaniowych. Autor przedstawia założenia ideowe związane z kształtowaniem zrównoważonych zespołów mieszkaniowych z punktu widzenia pieszego poruszającego się w przestrzeni miejskiej. "Pieszy w przestrzeni miasta" - taki temat otrzymali studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego. Celem było między innymi uzyskanie nowych interesujących wizji i optymalnych rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych na miarę drugiej dekady dwudziestego pierwszego wieku. Artykuł prezentuje dziesięć najlepszych nagrodzonych studenckich projektów oraz dwa projekty dyplomowe inżynierskie, które potwierdzają tezę, że małe zrównoważone zespoły mieszkaniowe rozwiązane funkcjonalno-przestrzennie w oparciu o ruch pieszy wspomagany rowerowym oraz piesze wnętrza urbanistyczne są zespołami przyjaznymi środowisku mieszkaniowemu pod względem zdrowia mieszkańców oraz związków z naturą. W zakresie kształtowania przestrzeni pieszych pojawiły się tendencje zmierzające w kierunku zapewnienia dominacji ruchu pieszego w miejskich przestrzeniach oraz podniesienia rangi pieszych przestrzeni społecznych i publicznych w funkcjonowaniu oraz kompozycji miasta.
    The article is devoted to problems connected with shaping urban pedestrian spaces in small residential complexes. The author presents the ideological foundations connected with forming sustainable residential complexes from the perspective of a pedestrian moving around the urban space. "Pedestrian in the Urban Space" – that was a topic given to students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, Chair of Housing Environment. The goal was – without limitations – to obtain new interesting visions and optimal functional and spatial solutions, appropriate for the second decade of the 21st century. This article presents ten best awarded students’ designs and two Engineer diploma designs, which confirm the thesis that small sustainable residential complexes solved in functional and spatial terms basing on the pedestrian traffic supported by the cycling traffic and pedestrian urban interiors are complexes which are friendly towards the housing environment in terms of the residents’ health and their bonds with nature. In the scope of shaping pedestrian spaces, tendencies have appeared aiming towards securing the prevalence of the pedestrian traffic in urban spaces and increasing the rank of social and public pedestrian spaces in the functioning and composition of a city.

    This article discusses the aspects of designing the pavements of pedestrian zones, shared spaces, city squares and other public spaces in terms of the selection of their parameters, colour and texture, which can significantly improve their comfort of use and, in a wider context, improve the accessibility of public spaces and buildings. When we think about a friendly city, we aim to create urban spaces free from any barriers that could exclude some people from the social life. Urban space can be defined as friendly from the perspective of an end user who moves around on foot, or uses crutches or a wheelchair, but also in the context of fully fit people, who are nevertheless limited in their movement because they are pushing a pram, carrying a baby or heavy luggage, etc. It has been proven that a well-designed pavement can significantly improve access to an area, reducing therefore the stigmatisation of elderly, disabled, blind, visually impaired people, etc. Solutions described in this article go well beyond the applicable legal acts in the context of the building law and therefore significantly improve the accessibility of public spaces and buildings and help to create spaces that are friendly to all users - i.e. spaces that are safe and free of any risks connected with disorientation, psychological security or the possibility of collision due to the existing barriers.
    Artykuł porusza aspekt projektowania nawierzchni ciągów pieszych, pieszo-jezdnych, placów miejskich i innych przestrzeni publicznych pod kątem doboru ich parametrów, kolorystyki oraz faktury, które w znacznym stopniu poprawiają komfort ich użytkowania, a w szerszym kontekście, zwiększają dostępność przestrzeni i obiektów publicznych. Myśląc o mieście przyjaznym, należy wziąć za cel kształtowanie przestrzeni miejskich bez barier wykluczających z życia społecznego. Należy wspomnieć, iż o przyjaznej przestrzeni możemy mówić w kontekście bezpośredniego użytkownika poruszającego się przede wszystkim pieszo lub za pomocą kul i na wózku inwalidzkim, ale również osób w pełni sprawnych, lecz ograniczonych przez np. przemieszczanie się z wózkiem dziecięcym, dzieckiem na rękach czy ciężkim bagażem itp. Wykazano, że odpowiednio zaprojektowana nawierzchnia znacząco wpływa na dostępność przestrzeni, a tym samym na zmniejszenie wykluczania osób starszych, osób z niepełnosprawnościami, niewidomych, niedowidzących itp. Przedstawione w artykule rozwiązania szeroko wykraczają poza obowiązujące akty prawne w świetle prawa budowlanego, tym samym znacząco wpływają na dostępność przestrzeni i budynków publicznych oraz kreują przestrzeń przyjazną każdemu użytkownikowi, czyli bezpieczną i niestwarzającą zagrożeń związanych z dezorientacją, bezpieczeństwem psychicznym i ewentualnymi kontuzjami na skutek istniejących barier.
