Opis:
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of plastic waste as fine aggregates to partial replacement of sand reinforced with inorganic pigment from red stone to manufacture paving block for pedestrian application. This is an effort not only to reduce plastic waste in the environment but also as an innovative way to find out an alternative eco-friendly paving block material for public walkways with an attractive appearance while ensuring pedestrian comfort. Design/methodology/approach: Approaches were converted the plastic waste to plastic powder which is then used as fine particles to sand partial replacement. The red stone powder is used to give red color to the paving block surface. The paving block materials were completely mixed in a pan mixer and added water as much as 12% of the total mass of the materials used. The paving block was cast in a mold dimension size of 20 cm × 10 cm × 6 cm and pressed with a load of 6 tons using a pressing machine. The effect of natural river sand to plastic powder ratio and curing time on the compressive strength and water absorption were investigated. Findings: The study results confirmed that the replacement of sand with plastic powder decreased the compressive strength of paving block. By partial replacement of sand with plastic powder in the range of 10% to 50% by weight, the compressive strength and water absorption value of pavement after 30 days agitation were at range of 18.06-12.78 MPa and 4.28-3.25%, respectively. This value was still met the minimum requirement for pedestrian applications according to Indonesian National Standard. Research limitations/implications: Replacing sand up to 50% by weight with plastic waste produces paving blocks with compressive strength and water absorption suitable for sidewalks and pedestrians. It is needed to continue research in terms of durability tests in order to be comfortable with the practical use of the material. Practical implications: The use of plastic waste reinforced with red stone powder as fine aggregate makes it one of the alternative ways to reduce plastic waste in the environment and obtain eco-friendly paving blocks with an attractive appearance. Originality/value: It has been experimentally proven that replacing sand up to 50% by weight with plastic powder produces paving blocks that are suitable for pedestrians application. The addition of red stone powder pigment makes the color of paving block surface become more attractive appearance.

Opis:
Nature friendly technologies in today’s world are the subject of scientific research and the interest of local authorities and the residents themselves. In the context of the city, one of the most important issues is the neutralization of air pollution generated by transport and heating of the premises with the use of solid fuels. The article analyses differences of the response of traditional and photocatalytic paving stones. We analysed water absorption, frost resistance, tensile strength at splitting and abrasion of paving stones. It has been proved that paving stones exposed to atmospheric factors and pollution during one heating season met the assumed quality criteria. In addition, the results obtained for the characteristics analysed were higher than the results of samples tested in laboratory conditions. The results also indicate a slight advantage of photocatalytic cubes in terms of their resistance to abrasion and tensile strength at splitting. Traditional and photocatalytic paving stones withstand well the operating conditions. It seems that products based on TioCem® cement are the future implementation of pedestrian and traffic routes.

Opis:
The article presents several examples of historical fragments of streets of Poznań in the so-called Upper City with preserved granite gutters, stone pavements with cube dimensions 18 X 20 cm and 10 X 20 cm. Attention was also paid to the presence of setts made of basalt basin, as well as to the roads paved with fieldstone. These increasingly rare fragments of metropolitan streets should be subject to historical and architectural protection. They should be treated as the historic fabric of every city with a long and significant tradition.

Opis:
The article describes stone pavements forming the surface of the Old Market Square in Poznań. In the context of postulates of replacement of a historical stone surface with modern paving, the authors took the position that the quality as well as the amount of existing rock material is fully sufficient to carry out its renovation. First and foremost, it should concern the existing granite-gneiss, and more rarely basalt, quartz and porphyry paving stones, as well as granite paving slabs and granite curb stones.

STONE PAVING
STREET SURFACES
SZCZECIN
Opis:
Recently it has become customary to describe street surfaces as their 'fourth dimension', 'floor' or 'horizontal elevation'. These terms testify to the growing role played by this particular element of town outfitting which for years has been forgotten and treated in a purely utilitarian manner associated solely with communication: street traffic and pedestrians. The very nature of the streets depended on their geographic location and changed with the progress of civilisation and the expansion of human adobes. The most popular form of historical nineteenth century surfaces was stone - the heritage of the experiences and tradition of the industrialization epoch. Originally, use was made of the so-called wild pavement, i. e. cobblestones which have survived mainly in the outskirts and small towns. Larger centres tried to grant their streets a more refined appearance by resorting to dressed stone and differentiated paving. Not until the 1980s did certain environments perceive street paving as an element of valuable historical development. The state of the preservation of historical pavements and streets in Szczecin has been examined in the course of two inventories carried out in 1999 and 2004, verifying the universal opinion about their unsatisfactory technical state and predominantly disclosing the enormous and variegated resources (project, material and aesthetic).
