    The object of the paper is to present the works of Patience Agbabi, a Nigerian-Welsh performance poet. With a view to highlighting cultural traditions inherent in her poems, I shall focus on analysing diverse aesthetic/artistic influences manifest in her works. These, among others, include Chaucer and 1980s African-American rap lyrics. The second part of my presentation shall tackle the notion of printed performance i.e. Agbabi's scribal/typographical endeavours to stage orature, to put the oral/theatrical in writing. My paper endeavours to chart Agbabi's artistic stepping beyond the thematic barricade of committed verses of protest – characteristic of the dub poetry style and symptomatic of her debut volume – and enumerate the post-dub features of her poetry, which are present in both her volumes, namely R.A.W. (1995) and Transformatrix (2000).

    Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the identities that inform our work as researchers and theorists? In contrast to recent trends towards various versions of instant or short-term ethnography (e.g., Pink and Morgan 2013) this paper argues for the merits of “slow” ethnography by examining the advantages of relational patience, perspectival patience, and the patience required to fully appreciate omissions, rarities, and secrets of the group.

    Emotions are one of the most fascinating and difficult aspects of human experience, and have received significant attention in biblical studies. This paper explores how one Hebrew lexeme, rûaḥ, provides a point of entry into the complex world of how emotions are expressed in ancient texts. Drawing from some insights of Cognitive Linguistics, it examines the use of rûaḥ to express the experience of impatience and patience, and arrogance and humility. This paper then challenges a long-held but simplistic equation of rûaḥ with anger, and argues that a more nuanced and complex relationship exists between lexeme and emotion than most citations in scholarship suggest.

    When we ask about the specific contribution of consecrated persons in the service of the Gospel of hope, we reply that it can be essentially summed up by three behaviors. Firstly, when we talk about hope, it means that we are experiencing some form of anxiety, possibly fear of distress. It is necessary, therefore, to look at fear from the perspective of Christian hope, which overcomes the fear, distances and eliminates any distress. Secondly, when we try to decipher the time of trials in its fullest sense, both spiritual as well as existential experience, familial or communal, we understand it as another way of experiencing hope. Thirdly, He gives strength in the holy anxiety about the things of the Lord, in order to realize what he is calling one to do. He will give the strength to follow this road and arrive at the goal of one’s journey.

    Opis:
    In this empirical study (n = 102), the authors set out to investigate the relation between altruism (measured with the use of individual social discounting rates) and patience (measured with the use of delays) under the conditions of financial losses. Thanks to the titration algorithm by Holt et al. (2003), and the Area Under the Curve indicator by Myerson et al. (2001), the study could apply discounting procedures to assess the altruism and patience of individuals. It was found that altruism and patience can be but do not have to be positively correlated in the domain of economic losses. It turns out that the occurrence of a positive correlation between altruism and patience (as often reported in the behavioural economics literature devoted to economic gains) depends on the temporal structure of the discounting task (temporal context of choice). When both the loss for the decision maker and another person from the social distance scale is delayed (shifted in time), positive correlations between altruism and patience are not observed. The latter finding is novel and nuances the behavioural economics knowledge on the relation between altruism and patience in economic choices.
    Przy użyciu badania eksperymentalnego (n = 102) przeanalizowano związek między altruizmem (mierzonym za pomocą indywidualnych stop dyskontowania społecznego) a cierpliwością (mierzoną za pomocą dyskontowania w czasie) w warunkach strat finansowych. Dzięki algorytmowi miareczkowania (Holt, Green i Myerson, 2003) oraz wskaźnikowi powierzchni pod krzywą (Myerson, Green i Warusawitharana, 2001) możliwe było zastosowanie procedury dyskontowania do oceny altruizmu i cierpliwości jednostek. Odkryto, że altruizm i cierpliwość mogą, ale nie muszą być pozytywnie skorelowane w dziedzinie strat ekonomicznych. Okazuje się, że występowanie pozytywnej korelacji między altruizmem a cierpliwością (jak jest to przedstawiane w literaturze ekonomii behawioralnej w przypadku materialnych korzyści) zależy od struktury czasowej zadania dyskontowania (czasowego kontekstu wyboru). Gdy zarówno strata decydenta, jak i drugiej osoby ze skali społecznej jest opóźniona, nie obserwuje się dodatnich korelacji pomiędzy altruizmem a cierpliwością. To ostatnie odkrycie jest nowatorskie i poszerza wiedzę ekonomii behawioralnej na temat związku między altruizmem a cierpliwością w wyborach ekonomicznych.

    Św. Tomasz z Akwinu w systemie aretologicznym ujmuje naturę cnoty cierpliwości oraz jej odniesienia do kardynalnej cnoty męstwa, której jest częścią potencjalną. W pełnym zrozumieniu cierpliwości pomaga analiza założeń Akwinaty. Doktryna aretologiczna św. Tomasza ukazuje, że cnota w sensie ogólnym jest czymś niezbędnym w codziennym życiu, gdyż ułatwia człowiekowi rozpoznanie i czynienie dobra, a unikanie zła. Celem cnoty, czyli sprawności, jest rozwijanie i chronienie ludzkiego dobra oraz udoskonalanie człowieka. Przeciwieństwem cnoty jest wada, która powoduje zagrożenie ludzkiego dobra. Św. Tomasz stwierdza, że cierpliwość jest częścią potencjalną męstwa, której głównym przedmiotem jest znoszenie zła szczególnie trudnego. Z cierpliwością łączy się cnota długomyślności i wytrwałości, których przedmiotem są wyłącznie doświadczenia i cierpienia. Bóg udziela człowiekowi hypomone wraz z łaską cnót teologalnych, aby mógł on przebywać we wspólnocie z Ojcem na wieki.
    St Thomas Aquinas in his aterological system says about the nature of virtue of patience, and its reference to cardinal virtue of fortitude, which the virtue of patience is the part of. To fully understand patience one should analyse the assumptions of St Thomas Aquinas. Aretological doctrine of St Thomas Aquinas says that the virtue is something which is indispensable to everyday life, because the virtue can help to identify and to do the right, and to avoid doing the wrong. The aim of the virtue is to develop and protect what is worthy in human nature and to make one better than they are now. The opposite of virtue is vice. Vice endangers human righteousness. St Thomas Aquinas says that patience is the part of fortitude. The main pursuit of fortitude is to withstand evil when it is particularly hard to bear. The virtue of long-thinking and the virtue of perseverance which encloses experience and suffering are connected with patience. God gives hypomone to a man, with the grace of theological virtues. The hypomone is given to a man so they are able to remain in the state of everlasting communion with God.
