Opis:
The diocese is the Catholic Church made manifest in a definite place. The Church is realized there in its priestly, teaching and pastoral functions. Owing to the bishop's ministry the diocese is a part of the Catholic Church, and at the same time it is a particular Church that has its own identity and specificity. the bishop’s ministry is directed to all the faithful in the diocese. Disabled people are entrusted to his special care, as they cannot fully realize the Christian mission in the parish. For them the bishop, along with the diocesan curia and properly prepared priestly and lay assistants, organizes a special kind of pastorate that has asupra-parish character. He also supports efforts made by parish priests on the basis of the principle of personalization, normalization and integration. It is also the bishop’s task to offer material, educational and teaching aid, as well as help in their rehabilitation.

Opis:
Today's pastorate is looking for topical models of preaching the Gospel. The article presents Franciszek Blachnicki's proposition that any pastoral work should be based on the Gospel. Experience shows that a considerable part of Christians do not fully live according to the Gospel. This leads to the conclusion that most practicing Catholics need to be evangelized. The need to preach the truth of the faith is ever more necessary also among those people who are christened, but have never accepted Christ as the Lord and the Savior. Also the postulate of a well-thought out pastorate is distinct, where through a clear vision mature attitudes are formed. Such a model of pastorate based on evangelization ultimately is to lead to building the community of the Church.

Opis:
In 1926, when Cardinal A. Hlond assumed the office of Primate of Poland whose see is in Gniezno and Poznań, the number of Polish emigrants exceeded 6 million and was still rising. In the USA there were already about 800 Polish parishes. In other countries Polish pastorate was only being formed, or there was none. Primate Hlond knew the problems and needs of the emigrant pastorate of those times. At the first convention of Poles living abroad he informed its participants that “the Polish Episcopate through the Primate of Poland tries to give the pastorate abroad a new organization and new forms, that is: a central management of the apostolate abroad, organization of the apostolate in Poland, and organization of the apostolate abroad”. The Hlondian ideas are carried out by the Institute of Emigration Pastorate (1984) and the Emigration Apostolate Movement (1985) in Poznań, numbering about 4 thousand members and supporters both in Poland and abroad. The Movement brings together apostles, communities and institutions devoted to emigration apostolate, and especially: the apostolate of prayer, the parish apostolate, the culture apostolate and the apostolate of ties with the Motherland.

Opis:
The Church points to the fact that disabled people have the right to get married and start a family. This right results from those people’s personal dignity that has been given to them by God – the Creator. The possibility to start marital-familial communities by the disabled is a challenge for pastorate, as disability of the spouse negatively influences the realization of all the functions of the family. The basic role in the pastorate of the families of disabled people is played by the parish. Parish pastors should meet the spiritual and material needs of the disabled and their families. Their work should be permanent and systematic. Pastorate realized on the higher level, especially on the level of the diocese, has a great significance. It complements parish pastorate, meeting the spiritual, psychological, rehabilitation and social needs of the disabled and their families. A similar role is played by associations and foundations that are guided in their work by the Church’s social teaching.

Great Emigration clergy
Polish pastorate abroad
Opis:
Participation of Polish clergy in the Great Emigration in the British Isles is a subject that is not widely known in Polish historiography. There is no academic analysis of their vicissitudes, and hence the author of the article thought it advisable to present it. In the period between 1831 and 1863 over 20 Polish priests were staying in Britain for a longer or shorter time. They most often reached the British Isles through France, where there was the main center of Polish emigration after the November Uprising. They were usually chaplains who had taken part in the Uprising and priests involved in the clandestine national movement of the 1840s. Polish priests lived first of all in London, where in 1842 in the Belgian chapel in London Road in Southwark Polish pastorate started working. From the beginning of its work until 1849 it was headed by Rev. Stanisław Poncjan Brzeziński. In the period between 1844 and 1848 Rev. Wincenty Kraiński of the Resurrectionist Order worked there; next Rev. Emeryk Podolski (1853, 1856-1885) and Rev. Marcin Chwaliszewski (1862-1864) were the chaplains. The remaining Polish priests fulfilled pastoral duties in a more irregular way. Holy Masses and other Church feasts celebrated by emigrant priests were a very important element supporting national and religious identity in the Polish diaspora. Priests also were members of emigrant political, educational and charitable organizations. The article is based on studies, emigrant press and source materials from Polish and foreign record offices and libraries.

Opis:
In the Church’s teaching fatherhood is defined as a vocation and constitutes an element of family life that is significant and difficult to replace. However, social changes and contemporary problems connected with the functioning of family have lead to a modification of the father model, and even the thesis about its crisis has appeared. This is why pastoral care for fathers of the family is one of the priorities of the family pastorate. Creating structures and methods of such a pastorate is a pastoral postulate. It is worth returning to the practice of special teachings for fathers as well as establishing workshops, retreats, pilgrimages and other forms of work with fathers. Experiences of Catholic families associations that give broadly understood support to fathers are especially valuable, as well as the grass-roots Inicjatywa Tato.Net that actively promotes responsible fatherhood.

The books and articles devoted to Bishop Ignacy Krasicki published up till now have focused almost exclusively on his literary output and left out his pastoral and administrative activities. But from December 1766 to May 1795 he was the Bishop of the Warmia Diocese and for the next six years the Gniezno Archbishop. In that period he fulfilled all the functions resulting from his teacher's, priestly and pastoral power. He gave sermons very often: not only in his own diocese but also during national ceremonies. He was a very good orator who willingly quoted fragments of the Holy Writ, explained dogmatic issues and pointed to their application in everyday life. Bishop Krasicki also performed all the duties resulting from his priestly power. Documents have been preserved that confirm the fact that he celebrated Holy Masses and administered sacraments, especially the sacraments of confirmation and of priesthood (reserved for the bishop). However, most information that has been preserved concerns fulfilling his pastoral function. In the Warmia Diocese Archive the protocols are kept of about 50 general inspections of parishes that he himself carried out. He also consecrated 10 churches. He issued nomination documents for parish priests and for curates. After the Jesuit Order had been dissolved he made efforts that aimed at enabling Jesuits to work in the reformed schools. In 1771 he sent a relation concerning the state of his diocese (relatio status) to the Holy See. Until 1772 Bishop Krasicki was also the governor of the dominion in the Warmia Diocese, that is, he exercised the secular power on a defined territory. It was his prerogative to appoint lay clerks who took care of the properties and the subjects. Within the King's Prussia the Bishop of Warmia acted as the chairman of the Prussian states. However, when Warmia was occupied by Prussia, Krasicki lost his dominion and became the Prussian King's subject; he received his annual salary from the King.

After Poland regained independence the role of decanal conferences of priests became more important. Regular conventions of decanal clergy positively influenced pastoral work, introduced order in it, unified its aims and methods of work. They also played an important role in solving the local priests' problems concerning their living standards. The bishop appreciated the significance of decanal conferences, perceiving an important element of the management system and control of the diocese in them. In 1926 a diocesan director of pastoral conferences was appointed, his aim being, among others, to set subjects for discussion at priests' conventions. The conferences became an important instrument for learning about priests' opinions and their attitudes as well as for shaping them by the diocese authorities.

Since the end of the 19th century Polish Oblates of Mary Immaculate have been involved in pastoral work in Polish emigrant communities in Canada and in West Europe. The Polish Province of the Congregation was established by priests who knew well about the needs and about the significance of this kind of service. In 1926 Polish Oblates were able to take part in the event that was most important for the Order, one with an international import – the General Chapter in Rome. From this perspective, on the basis of sources and Chapter documents, the article describes progress made in the development of Oblate structures in Poland that were established mostly with the thought of securing missionaries for Polish emigrants. In the years that followed the climax of 1926 these aspirations were slowly realized, laying the foundations of permanent involvement of Polish Oblates in the work in West Europe.

The article is divided into four parts. In Part One the connection between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist is dealt with. Part Two presents the Liturgy of the Hours as the source and crowning of pastoral work. In Part Three the other reasons inclining the priest to celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours are given. The last part — Part Four is an instruction concerning the salutary fruit resulting from a proper celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. When writing about the connection between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist the emphasis is put both on the role of the Liturgy of the Hours in preparing the priest to the celebration of the Eucharist, and on enriching the whole day with Eucharistic values. The value of the Liturgy of the Hours for pastoral activity first of all lies in its being the source of the whole of apostolic work. Apart from this, by celebrating the Liturgy of the Hours the priest consolidates his love for Christ and His Church. However, if he wants to gain from the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, to which he is obliged every day, as much fruit as possible, he should celebrate it not only integrally, but also zealously.

The First Convention of the Priests of the Polish Catholic Mission in France – this is what the innovatory pastoral institution for Polish emigrants was called. It was established on 13 May 1922. Its first rector was Rev. Wilhelm Szymbor of the Congregation of the Mission. In the place of the one-man pastorate in Paris an Institution was established that comprised the Polish community in the whole of France. A lot of priests were necessary to carry out this task. The institution was supported by Cardinal Dalbor and the Polish bishops. Most participants in the first convention who came to France in 1922, after the Mission was established, were priests sent to work in the Polish language pastorate and were part of the Mission; and then there were priests sent by their bishops to universities, who were able and ready to help with the work in the Polish pastorate. The Convention that is presented in the article touches upon a few important issues with which the Mission had to deal. It also mentions the problem of the aversion that some Church circles in France, including specific bishops, took to it. Some people wanted to rule it, and others did not want to have Polish priests in their territory. These problems are revealed by the correspondence between the first Rector of the Mission Rev. Wilhelm Szymbor and Cardinal Dalbor as well as by the Protocol of the first convention of the Polish priests working with Polish emigrants in France that took place on 13th April 1923 on the premises of the Polish Mission in Paris.

Starting from 1893 Polish emigrants began arriving in Denmark, usually from Little Poland and Cieszyn Silesia. At first the emigration had a seasonal character and was first of all agricultural. For the total number of 25 thousand Catholics in Denmark there were 13 thousand Poles. In 1927 14 foreign priests who spoke Polish performed pastoral service among them. Pastoral service performed by Polish priests who were subordinated to the Primate of Poland met unusual opposition from chauvinistically oriented Missionaries, usually Dutch or German by descent. The Polish envoy to Copenhagen predicted the necessity of presenting this issue to the Holy See. The presented document – a report written by the Rector of the Polish Catholic Mission in Belgium, Rev. Dr. Tadeusz Kotowski, the person who established the religious and cultural-social care for Polish emigrants both in Belgium and in the Netherlands and Denmark, confirmed that “the problem of religious care in Denmark was very complicated because of the Church policy of the Vicariate Apostolic, supported to some extent by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, aiming at denationalization of the Polish emigrants.
