    Opis:
    Passion poetry plays an important part in the early creative work of Symeon of Polotsk. Visions of Christ’s suffering sparkle in his poems with baroque ornaments - sophisticated symbo- lism and exquisite metaphors structured on contrast. Describing last hours of Christ before the crucifixion, Symeon does not run from vivid, naturalist imagery, full of cruelty and pain. The suffering does not belittle Jesus, on the contrary, in the eyes of Symeon it makes Him more powerful, the true Lord of all creation. The most characteristic for this series of poems is their emotional flavour. Symeon is very personal in these works. He does not scare from using a strong, graphic language that should engage all senses of the reader, even bring him/her to tears. Filled with imagery, the passion poetry of Symeon is designed to resonate with the inner world of the reader and induce mystical experiences. To that end Symeon uses the brutality of Christ’s suffering and other sophisticated literary concepts.

    The article presents the ways of defining and understanding hope in Polish, English and American literature. The basic theses are: 1) hope is an ambivalent phenomenon, 2) hope is connected with the work of consciousness and imagination, 3) hope conjures up visions of the alternative existential and social solutions, 4) hope is a passion and a way of knowing, 5) hope constitutes the keystone of artistic and academic activity.

    My paper addresses the ways of presenting the Passion of Christ in the 17th century Polish passion messiads. Concentrating on the images of the flagellation of Christ in the narrative poems of Kasper Miaskowski, Abraham Rożniatowski, Wacław Potocki and Wespazjan Kochowski, I analyze the relation of the motifs used by them to the exegetic, the mystic, and the apocryphal traditions. Respectful of their original context, my interpretation of the fragments is supported by a thorough analysis of their structure and use of rhetoric devices. My research allows me to conclude that in order to approach the mysteries of faith, the authors of the messiads used symbolic language as a living faith tradition.

    Opis:
    The poetry of Arab-Andalusian poets is a bridge between Eastern and Western culture. Its roots date back to the sixth century, when the first Bedouin songs resounded in the limitless areas of the Arabian desert. His echoes resounded in the poetry of Provençal troubadours. Traces of this poetry can be found in the works of Renaissance poets, including Petrarc. Elements of Andalusian poetry were also visible in the poetry of the Spanish court since the 16th century. The characteristic poetic forms still appeared in 20th century poetry – at least one of the most outstanding Spanish poets, Federico Garcia Llorca, reached for it. Its greatest prosperity was in the 10th andd 11th centuries, and among the outstanding Andalusian poets were both men and women. The main motive of this poetry was unfulfilled love, which remained the dominant element of modern European court poetry.
    La obra de los poetas arabigo-andaluces es un puente entre la cultura oriental y occidental. Sus raíces se remontan al siglo VI, cuando las primeras canciones beduinas resonaron en las áreas ilimitadas del desierto de Arabia. Sus ecos resonaron en la poesía de los trovadores provenzales. Los motivos de esta poesía se pueden encontrar en las obras de los poetas del Renacimiento, incluso en las de Petrarca. Los elementos de la poesía andaluza también fueron visibles en la poesía de la corte española del siglo XVI. Las formas poéticas características de esta poesía todavía aparecieron en la poesía del siglo XX: fue alcanzada por al menos uno de los poetas españoles más destacados, Federico García Llorca. Su mayor prosperidad fue en los siglos X y XI, y entre los poetas andaluces más destacados se encontraban tanto hombres como mujeres. El motivo principal de esta poesía era el amor incumplido, que seguía siendo el elemento dominante de la poesía moderna de la corte europea.

    W artykule omówiono motyw torcular Christi występujący w poezji barokowej. Mistyczna tłocznia ma proweniencję starotestamentową, a w tradycji chrześcijańskiej łączy się z Viae Dolorosae. W poezji religijnej XVII w. ujawnia się w porównaniu krwi Chrystusa do soku wyciśniętego w prasie z owocu winorośli i jest wykorzystywana w kreowaniu barokowego obrazu makabrycznej Męki Chrystusa. Obecność i symbolika tego motywu została przedstawiona na podstawie wybranych tekstów A. Rożniatowskiego, W. Potockiego, J.A. Morsztyna, W. Kochowskiego, W. Bartoszewskiego, K. Bolesławiusza, A. Wieszczyckiego i K. Miaskowskiego. Zwrócono też uwagę na motywy dolorystyczne – integralnie związane z Pasją – i na ich paralelną relację z męką Matki Bożej: udręczeniu Jezusa towarzyszą duchowe męczarnie Maryi. Ustalono, że kontemplacja zmaltretowanego i krwią zbroczonego ciała Zbawiciela i dramatu Jego Matki dostarcza sensualnych wrażeń, które przez wiarę umożliwiają przekroczenie granic zmysłowej percepcji i „przebóstwienie” ludzkiej zmysłowości oraz edukują człowieka baroku.
    In the article I discussed the motive of torcular Christi which takes place in baroque poetry. The mystic press has Old Testament provenance and in Christian tradition it is connected with Viae Dolorosae topic. In seventeenth century’s religious poetry this provenance shows in comparing Christ’s blood to the juice extruded from grapes in press and it is used in creating baroque image of gruesome Passion of Christ. The presence and symbolic of this motive is presented on the basis of selected texts written by A. Rożniatowski, W. Potocki, J.A. Morsztyn, W. Kochowski, W. Bartoszewski, K. Bolesławiusz, A. Wieszczycki and K. Miaskowski. I also paid attention to doloristic motives integrally connected with Passion and to their parallel relation with torment of Saint Mary – while Christ is tormenting, his Mother also goes through spiritual tortures. There was stated, that contemplation of Redeemer’s body, battered and soaked with blood, and meditation on Mary’s tragedy provides sensual impressions, which – with faith – allow crossing borders of sensual perception and Deifi cation of human sensuality end educate the baroque man.
