Opis:
There are three native and two introduced ruminant species from deer family (Cervidae) living in wild in Poland. The native species (moose Alces alces, red deer Cervus elaphus and roe deer Capreolus capreolus) live also in the Kampinoski National Park, one of the greatest national parks in Poland, that consists of many different habitats such as various types of forest, swamps, meadows and also agricultural areas. Because of protection of this area by Polish and European law, the number of wild ruminants is high (about 350 mooses, 150 red deer and 2500 roe deer). The study was conducted in order to examine the composition of internal parasites of deer living in the Kam− pinoski National Park and to determine their frequency depending on the host species. From September 2014 to April 2015, 343 fecal samples (73 red deer, 133 moose and 137 roe deer) were collected. Standard flotation (using sodium chloride aqueous solution) and sedimentation methods were used, as well as Vajda method (to find expected larvae of lung−inhabiting nematodes). Coccidia from Eimeria genus, three species of trematodes, tapeworms from Moniezia genus, and various nematodes (families Trichostrongylidae and Protostrongylidae, genus Strongyloides, Nematodirus, Trichuris and Aonchotheca) were detected. Nematodes from Trichostrongylidae family have occurred the most frequent in all investigated deer species with the prevalence of 72.2% in moose, 52.1% in red deer and 48.9% in roe deer. Differences among hosts were statistically significant. The prevalence of other invasions has turned out much lower and without statistically significant differences between hosts, except from trematodes. The prevalence of all internal parasite invasions is high in all investigated deer species with the value 83.5%, 79.5% and 60.0% in moose, red deer and roe deer respectively. This high prevalence of parasitic infections is typical for wild ruminants and could be considered as a potential risk for domestic ruminants, because of similarity of the parasitofauna and possible migration of deer, particularly mooses.

Opis:
This study was intended to evaluate the occurrence and seasonality of infection of coccidian and helminth parasites, in three rabbit warrens differently managed. Mothers stayed with their offspring on deep litter (farm A, 90 dams), in boxes cleaned weekly (farm B, 30 dams) or on slatted floor (farm C, 10 females), whereas all the young after weaning (1 to 5 months of age) were kept in cages with slatted floor. Animals were fed a complete balanced pelleted feed (warrens A and B) or traditional forage (herd C). Antiparasitic treatment involved coccidiostatic drugs. Robenidine (alternately with Lerbec in farm A) was added to food in the first two farms, whilst Sulfatyf mixed with water was given once after weaning in farm C. A total of 203 individual faecal samples from females of breeding stock, and 133 pooled samples from young animals, were collected on an annual cycle during 2007–2008 (February–January), and analyzed according to a modified concentration McMaster method. Coccidians were identified based on sporulated oocysts. A number of coccidian species (Eimeria perforans, E. media, E. magna, E. irresidua, E. exiqua, E. coecicola, and E. piriformis) were observed in all farms. The most pathogenic species – E. intestinalis was found both in farm A and B, whereas E. flavescens and E. stiedae – only in the former. The level of infection was high, especially in young rabbits, with the prevalence of 94.9 to 100% and mean intensity from 11 161 to 28 871 oocysts per 1 g of faeces (OPG) in a particular warren. The highest intensity of infection was observed in May, when the mean output increased to 29 454, 56 952, and 23 815 OPG in warrens A, B, and C, respectively. A nematode, Passalurus ambiguus, was detected in all searched farms, with the prevalence from 14.1% to 27.5%, depending on a farm. The species was more often seen in the first part of year. The other helminths (Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Graphidium strigosum, and Trichuris leporis) were found only in rabbits of warren C. In this warren, the forage of farm origin was suggested to be prepared in a proper way in order to protect it from nematode transmission. The presence of coccidia and their specific composition has been continuously monitored in all farms, to estimate the efficiency of prophylactic measures undertaken.

The examination of 18 abomasums and 23 excrement samples of red deer from the Strzałowo Forest District (Pisz Primeval Forest) showed infestation of these animals with 6 gastric−intestinal nematode species (Spiculopteragia boehmi, Ostertagia leptospicularis, Ostertagia kolchida, Spiculopteragia mathevossiani, Trichostrongylus axei and Nematodirus roscidus) and 3 pulmonary nematode species (Elaphostrongylus cervi, Varestrongylus sagittatus and Dictyocaulus eckerti). As a result of performed disinfestation, the average infestation level of the animals with S. boehmi nematodes and female nematodes from the family Ostertagiinae was reduced and the infestation with D. eckerti was eliminated.

Opis:
The objective of the present study was to determine the incidence of internal parasites in dogs and cats owned by the employees of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and by students and their families, as well as in pets presented to veterinary clinics and in animals from shelters. The study, conducted from January to May 2008, involved 135 dogs and 35 cats. Feces samples were analyzed for parasites by flotation technique with the use of Darling’s solution, as described by Fülleborn. The highest percentage of parasite eggs was reported in feces samples collected from shelter dogs, including Toxocara and Toxascaris (9.1%), Uncinaria−Ancylostoma (12.1%) and Trichuris (12.1%), while in shelter cats the extensiveness of parasitic invasion was as follows: Toxocara cati – 61.5%, Toxascaris – 15.4%, Uncinaria−Ancylostoma – 7.7%, Isospora spp. – 7.7%. The lowest parasite incidence was observed among dogs and cats owned by veterinary students and members of their families. Of 20 examined animals, only one dog carried the eggs of Toxocara canis and one dog carried the eggs of Trichuris in their feces. Similar results were obtained in the group of pets owned by the employees of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine: among 6 dogs and 13 cats examined in the study, Toxocara eggs were detected in one cat only (16.6%). In the group of pets presented to veterinary clinics, comprising 77 dogs and 8 cats, feces samples taken from 11 dogs contained the eggs of Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria−Ancylostoma and Trichuris, while Isospora spp. oocysts were found in the stool of two cats.

Opis:
From the time of the discovery of Trichinella larvae in 1835 until the middle of the next century it was commonly assumed that all trichinellosis was caused by a single species Trichinella spiralis. This species is an intracellular parasite in both a larva and an adult stage. The L1 larvae live in a modified skeletal muscles. The adult worms occupy a membrane-bound portion of columnar epitelium, living as intramulticellular parasite. More than century later T. spiralis have been reported from more than 150 different naturally or experimentally infected hosts and demonstrated worldwide distribution in domestic and/or sylvatic animals. Up to date, Trichinella genus comprised eight species (T. spiralis, T. nativa, T. britovi, T. murrelli, T. nelsoni, T. pseudospiralis, T. papuae and T. zimbabwensisi) and three additional genotypic variants that have not yet to be taxonomically defined (T6, T8, T9). Molecular markers revealed that Trichinella T6 is related to T. nativa, Trichinella T8 related to T. britovi. Two main clades are recognized in the genus Trichinella: the first encapsulated in host muscle tissue and the second-non-encapsulated. In this paper the history of Trichinella spp. discovery, their life cycle, taxonomy and phylogeny have been reviewed.

Opis:
On the turn of July and August the prevalence and intensity of internal parasites of cattle, deer, and primitive Polish horses were estimated. It was determined, that all groups of animals were infected with parasites. The prevalence and intensity of infection were diversified and depended on the animal species, breed, age, and even sex. For instance, dairy cows of lowland black-and-white breed were six times stronger infected than Polish red breed, despite using the same pasture and the same cowshed. Nematodes and coccidia were present in calves using small, frequently wet, calf-runs and at heifers grazed on pasture since early spring. Their parasites were gastrointestinal nematodes and tapeworms. Mares were infected solely with strongylids, while the sucking foals — additionally with ascarid nematodes. Mares of primitive Polish horses were infected by hookworm strongylids, ascarids, and tapeworms while stallions harboured only toothed strongylids. The animals surveyed were infected chiefly with nematodes and to a considerably smaller degree with tapeworms and coccidia.

Internal parasites of cattle in select Western Pomerania farms. The studies were carried out in five farms, on 84 calves and 153 cows. The prevalence and intensity of the Coccidia and gastro-intestinal nematodes infection were determined by means of the Willis-Schlaaf's and McMaster's methods. The Coccidia composition in the examined animals was determined by morphological features of the oocysts and the sporulation time. The following four Eimeria species were isolated: E. bovis, E. aubernensis, E. zürni and E. ellipsoidalis. Two methods were used for detection of Cryptosporidium sp. - the Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique and coproantigen test. In cows, the overall prevalence was Eimeria sp. ranged from 5.5 to 23.4%, gastro-intestinal nematodes ranged from 12.7 to 42.6%. In calves, the overall prevalence Eimeria sp. was ranged from 10.0 to 36.8% oocysts and Cryptosporidium sp. 22.8%.

Opis:
Parasitical invasions constitute a serious veterinary-economic problem in pheasant breeding. The studies were carried out between 1995-1997 in a big breeding centre situated in the Middle Pomerania region, where the basic flock amounted to 1000-1200 bird individuals. The aim of the study was to determine a condition of the pheasants' affliction with nematodes, reasons for the invasion and possibilities of a decrease in the losses thus brought about. In the subsequent years, the flock affliction reached the following proportions: 40% in 1995, 42% in 1996, and 68% in 1997. Between 1995 and 1996, the findings revealed eggs of the nematode Capillaria sp (C. anatis and C. phasianina) in their faeces, with less frequent cases of Trichostrongylus tenuis, Heterakis isolonche and Syngamus trachea. Between 1995-1996 40% deaths in the afflicted flock were brought about by Syngamus trachea whilst in 1997 syngamosis resulted in 80% deaths among the afflicted birds. To determine reasons for the confirmed nematode invasion in the studied period during which all the requirements were fulfilled in the pheasant breeding, conclusions were drawn on the basis of the study. Also, preventive measures were suggested to stop any further appearance of syngamosis or losses due to other endoparasites, as those in 1997.
