Opis:
Influence of such factors as temperature, pH, CO₂ level and oxidationreduktion potential value in the alimentary tract of host on the stimulation of invasive eggs was studied. Changes of these factors lead to change in permeability of inner layer of egg-shell. Then the hatching fluid is released and its enzymes digest the egg-shell. In the nematodes, which have the free-living larvae, the initiation process can depend on parasite or environmental agents.

Opis:
In this review the faunistic results concerning helminth parasites of mammals in zoological gardens are reported. The role of zoos in the context of parasitological surveys with special attention to laboratory in the Zoo of Łódź is presented. Different examples of helminthofauna of zoo animals are disscussed, e.g. hyperinfections of the gastro−intestinal helminths of zoo ruminants as well as parasite species common for primates and humans, e.g. Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Schistosoma sp., Echinococcus multilocularis. It is reported that a high prevalence of parasitic agents was noted in captive rodents in zoos. The rodents are proven to be the source of Toxocara spp., Calodium hepaticum and E. multilocularis infections as zoological gardens may provide an ideal environment for these parasites.

The article reviews the problems on epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis and gives a detailed description of the massive waterborne outbreak in Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA) associated with a break in filtration capacity of a public water supply. The authors emphasize the need for high-quality diagnostic procedures as current coprodiagnostic microscopical techniques seemed to fail to detect Cryptosporidium oocysts.

Five white-tailed eagles were dissected - 3 from the Czech Republic and 2 from Poland. 4 specimens were infected with trematodes only: Strigea falconis, Neodiplostomum (Conodiplostomum) perlatum, and Paracoenogonimus ovatus. S. falconis was found for the first time in an eagle from the Czech Republic, whereas N. (C.) perlatum and P. ovatus were detected for the first time in eagle from Poland. Moreover, N. (C.) perlatum is a new species for the Polish parasite fauna.

Opis:
Parasitic nematodes very rarely exist in birds that are completely or predominantly herbivorous. The investigation of the helminth fauna of Passeriformes in the region of Lower Silesia revealed new hosts for some nematode species. We found in Acrocephalus scirpaceus – Acuaria subula and Microtetrameres inermis; in Fringilla coelebs and in Luscinia megarhynchos – Dispharynx nasuta; in Passer montanus – Capillaria angusta; in Phylloscopus trochiloides – Acuaria subula as well in Phylloscopus collybita – Microtetrameres sp. These nematodes have not been so far reported from these bird species.

Opis:
Background. The study about the distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in the Lublin region was conducted between 2004–2006. Material and methods. In the spring and autumn activity peak the parasites were directly collected from plants using the flagging method. In autumn 2005 the post mortem examinations of 33 dears shot by hunters were performed. Results. In total, 11 new sites of Dermacentor reticulates ticks were found, including three outside the south and west border of the Lublin province (Fig. 1). It seems that the change in Dermacentor reticulatus range is related to expansion and increased number of moose, the most important final host of the parasite until recently. Dermacentor reticulatus was observed in deep forest complexes and in the vicinity of human habitats. This fact may indicate an increasing role of deer and dogs as the host species.

Opis:
A total 89 fish and lamprey species has been recorded from Polish freshwater habitats. Twenty−seven of them (30.3%) have not been surveyed for parasitic helminthes. Some of the latter fishes are either rare or not easily accessible. Other live only in specific habitats in scattered localities. An important obstacle for studying parasite faunas of some fishes may be their status on an endangered species. Among the non−surveyed fishes, are those which have been relatively recently introduced to Poland or migrated there on their own. The present paper attempts to review all hitherto not studied helminthologically fish species, their habitats, localities and current protection status.

Two commercial faecal antigen tests, based on Giardia specific antigens, were compared with traditional microscopical examination of faeces in 40 clinical patients, including 14 patients with a confirmed Giardia infection as well as in a survey among 96 children in four day care centers. The results obtained with these faecal antigen tests were not much better than by using traditional microscopy by a well trained parasitologist. Specific Giardia antigen (GSA 65) has been still detected in faeces up to day 4th after treatment of giardiosis, when microscopical examination of faeces was already for a few days negative. The Giardia antigen detection test was not very useful in examining the unconcentrated duodenal content.

The Diptera attacked domestic animals in Poland are: Simuliidae, Culicidae, Tabanidae, Gasterophilidae, Hypoder-matidae and Muscidae. The insect assail the crazing animals, mostly during sunny day dna at close of day. Lack of effective repelents and also difficulties with their usage, makes it impossible to complete extermination of parasitic insects in the environment. It is posible to effectively fight against Hypoderma bovis and Gasterophilus spp.

Opis:
New and traditional techniques of electron microscopy, and successful attempts at an experimental infection of fish with cocidia provided a base for a considerable taxonomic revision within the group of the fish coccidia. The authors present contemporary views on the biology of these protozoans (life cycles, host specifity) and new systems of taxonomic classification according to Dykova and Lom (1983), Levine (1983) and, the most recent, according to Overstreet et al. (1984). The list of the fish coccidia described from Poland, in agreement with the system of Overstreet, is also presented.

Opis:
Influence of such factors as temperature, pH, CO₂ level and oxidationreduktion potential value in the alimentary tract of host on the stimulation of invasive eggs was studied. Changes of these factors lead to change in permeability of inner layer of egg-shell. Then the hatching fluid is released and its enzymes digest the egg-shell. In the nematodes, which have the free-living larvae, the initiation process can depend on parasite or environmental agents.

The article reviews the problems on epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis and gives a detailed description of the massive waterborne outbreak in Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA) associated with a break in filtration capacity of a public water supply. The authors emphasize the need for high-quality diagnostic procedures as current coprodiagnostic microscopical techniques seemed to fail to detect Cryptosporidium oocysts.

It was investigated whether toxicity of lead (Pb) is so high that its effect on Nippostrongylus brasiliensis larvae could be transferred into subsequent (3) generations of the nematode. Wistar rats were infected with a dose 1000 N. brasiliensis larvae contaminated with Pb (9 days at 200 ppm in solution). The number of larvae in lungs after 24 and 42 hours and the number of adult nematodes in the small intestine after 90, 114 and 236 hours after infection were examined. To determine reproductiveness of the N. brasiliensis the number of eggs was determined. Eggs of the first generation subjected to Pb (P generation) were used to culture a subsequent generation of invasive larvae (F₁) which were used to infect rats. Eggs from that generation were used to culture the next invasive larvae generation (F₂) used again to infect rats. Lungs dissection after 24 hours has shown that the P generation produced 12 times less larvae than the control, while generations F₁ and F₂ produced 4,9-5 times less larvae than the control. Dissection data for the small intestine show the highest loss in invasive capability of this nematode in generation F₁. The dynamics of eggs excretion is the lowest in F₁ and excretion period is shorter by 1 day. In F₂, the number of eggs excreted is 5.8 times higher than in the control group. It seems that in F₂ generation mechanisms enabling the species to survive under unfavorable environmental conditions were started.

Opis:
Material and methods. Large intestines of five slaughtered sows, aging 10 months to 3 years and originating from different herds of southern Poland, were examined parasitologically according to an agar−gel method. The intestines were uncoiled and divided into three sections: section 1 — caecum and the first 0−20% part of colon, section 2 — 20−60% of large intestine and section 3 — 60−100% length of gut. Adult worms of Oesophagostomum were differentiated on the basis of species and sex, using the shape of buccal capsule and oesophagus, the length of male spicules, and the distance from vulva to anus as well as from anus to the tip of tail of females. Results. In the case of two sows, in 30% of the contents from the section 1 of large intestines a total of 10 specimens of Oesophagostomum quadrispinulatum (Marcone, 1901) Alicata, 1935 were found. This is a new nematode species in the parasitic fauna of Poland and the present record enlarges its geographical range. The infection with O. quadrispinulatum seems to be more dangerous from that of O. dentatum — the most common porcine nodular worm.

Opis:
Susceptibility of snails to infection with larvae of digenetic trematodes is determined by: degree of infectivity of a parasite race, causal ecological factors, and efficiency of defence reactions. In the article indications of resistance and immunity of these animals to such infections are presented, with regard to mechanisms of cellular and humoral forms of the immunological response. Some aspects of altered by a parasite dynamics of defence reactions of a host, like: occurrence of opportunistic infections (development of the immunological tolerance state for homo- and heterologous reinfections), adaptive immunity, and cases of survival of parasitic larvae in naturally resistant snails are discussed.

Fish from the north-east Atlantic, including neighbouring aquens are host of 3 species of Branchiura, 163 Copepoda, 37 Isopoda, 2 Amphipoda, and 1 of parasitic Cirripedia. Chondrichthyes have more species of parasitic crustaceans than Osteichthyes. Many specific parasites of Osteichthyes and the facultative parasites of fish include species of crustaceans to fish of both classes. 165 species of parasitic crustaceans are found in benthic and near- benthic fish, and 55 in pelagic fish. The greatest variety of species parasitic crustaceans is found in fishes in the North Sea (139); it is much smaller in the Baltic Sea (15). Endemic species constitute 15% of the total number of parasitic crustacean. The irregular distribution of parasitic crustaceans is among others connected with the biology and ecology of both hosts and their parasites.

Liczne gatunki muchówek (Diptera) prowadzą pasożytniczy tryb życia. Spośród nich trzy grupy są najpowszechniejsze i mają największe znaczenie chorobotwórcze u zwierząt hodowlanych i wolno żyjących. Są to muchówki należące do rodziny Oestridae, z podrodzin Gasterophilinae, Hypodermatinae i Oestrinae. W pracy opisano przypadek inwazji muchówek z rodzaju Hypoderma u koni utrzymywanych w klubie jeździeckim w okolicy Krakowa (Polska południowa), znajdującym się w bliskim sąsiedztwie gospodarstwa zajmującego się chowem bydła opasowego. Konie w wymienionym klubie są corocznie odrobaczane jesienią (październik), preparatem zwierającym iwermektynę. U dwóch koni stwierdzono obecność guzów, z otworami zamkniętymi śluzowo-ropną wydzieliną, na kłębie oraz zadzie. Larwy oznaczono jako II stadium gza – Hypoderma bovis. Występowanie larw gzów z tego rodzaju u koni może zmniejszać ich wykorzystanie w jeździectwie.
Many species of flies (Diptera) are parasites. Among them three groups can be distinguished as the most common and the most important pathogens in livestock and wild animals. These are flies belonging to the family Oestridae, of the subfamilies Gasterophilinae, Hypodermatinae and Oestrinae. This paper describes a case of invasion of flies of the genus Hypoderma sp. among horses kept at a riding club near Krakow (southern Poland), situated close to a farm where beef cattle are raised. The horses in the club are dewormed every year in autumn (October) with macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin). In two horses we found skin lesions taking the form of abscesses with openings closed by mucopurulent secretions. The lesions were located on the withers and the hindquarters. The larvae were identified as stage 2 larvae of Hypoderma bovis. The presence of larvae of these parasites in horses may reduce their use in horse riding.

Opis:
Fish from the north-east Atlantic, including neighbouring aquens are host of 3 species of Branchiura, 163 Copepoda, 37 Isopoda, 2 Amphipoda, and 1 of parasitic Cirripedia. Chondrichthyes have more species of parasitic crustaceans than Osteichthyes. Many specific parasites of Osteichthyes and the facultative parasites of fish include species of crustaceans to fish of both classes. 165 species of parasitic crustaceans are found in benthic and near- benthic fish, and 55 in pelagic fish. The greatest variety of species parasitic crustaceans is found in fishes in the North Sea (139); it is much smaller in the Baltic Sea (15). Endemic species constitute 15% of the total number of parasitic crustacean. The irregular distribution of parasitic crustaceans is among others connected with the biology and ecology of both hosts and their parasites.
