Limiting Fr. Janusz Stanisław Pasierb’s poetry exclusively to references to the Bible and the salvation history restricts understanding of the phenomenon of his poetry. Noticing the dialogicality of the speaking subject allows for grasping the most relevant in his poetry – experience accessible to the senses is moved to a higher level. The poet accurately and with minute precision notes down what is available to the senses; also, being aware of entanglement in time and space of human experience, he incorporates into his poetry a small surplus – he rips the experience from the horizontally oriented world and immerses it in transcendent reality. Observation and endurance are pillars of thinking about lyricism; Pasierb’s poems show how the prospect of eternity consolidates the value of a single experience.

The author discusses Fr. Janusz S. Pasierb’s poem spotkanie [meeting] from Zdejmowanie pieczęci [Removing the seal] volume (Warsaw, 1982). He treats the poem as an example of a double ekphrasis – a simultaneous reference to two works of art; one of them is Auguste Ottin’s large sculpture Polyphème surprenant Galatée dans les bras d’Acis (1866) composed into Marie de’ Medici’s fountain in Parisian Jardin du Luxembourg, the other Giovanni Lafranco’s painting Lucina e Norandino sorpresi dall’Orco (c. 1624) from the Borghese Gallery in Rome. The analysis, which evokes mythological, literary (Ariosto, Proust) and iconographical (Redon) contexts, leads to a conclusion about art’s mediating role; about art as ground that allows for enchantment over otherwise inaccessible forms of beauty.

Even though Fr. Janusz Stanisław Pasierb’s essay books enjoyed considerable popularity already during the author’s lifetime and they account for a sizeable portion of his writings, they have not been a subject of a separate study yet. Recently published Ars, fides et ratio. Esej teologiczny? (Tischner – Pasierb – Szymik) (Siedlce, 2012) [Ars, fides et ratio. A theological essay? (Tischner – Pasierb – Szymik)] by Aleksandra Pethe awakens hope for a revival in interest in Fr. Pasierb’s essays. The book itself contributes very little to the research on the writer’s essays, however it does pose important questions, among others on the mechanisms of the essayisation of homilies employed by Fr. Pasierb. It seems that other ways in which he transgressed various literary forms in the direction of theological essay deserve special attention. Fr. Pasierb’s writings remain open to state-of-the-art research tools and call for urgent investigation.

‘Poetic diptychs’ distinguish themselves from a group o Fr. Janusz St. Pasierb’s poems inspired by the art of painting. These dual poems refer to the same branches of art (painting, sculpture, architecture) as a general rule. The dual sequences are put in the volumes next to each other. Apart from the subject matter they are linked by similar characteristics and nearly identical formulation of their titles. References to art are a pretext to ponder upon in a theological, existential and metapoetic manner. Dual nature of the voice points to multiple ways in which the visible can be interpreted. It also shows the necessity of precise defining of any meanings and presents the scope of difficulties related to inexpressibility.

La poesia di Janusz St. Pasierb è una opera interessante e singolare. Questa poesia è ispirata nello stesso tempo la Biblia e l’osservazione della vita quotidiana. Le analisi della questione di sofferenza e della morte appaiono abbastanza spesso nel opera dell’Autore. Pasierb fa vedere la la morte non come la fine della vita umana ma come il passaggio alla vita piú piena e piú vera. Il poeta non dimentica il dolore umano però esprime che questa circostanza come la morte è un momento privileggiato per affermare la speranza della vita eterna. L’elemento importante della visione del mondo in poesia di Pasierb è la convinzione che la vita quotidiana e passagera e breve. Janusz Pasierb è il prete e il suo sacerdozio sicuramente avrà il suo spessore nella sua opera poetica pur non avendo nessun riferimento esplicito quando si tratta della funzione sacerdotale. La poesia di Pasierb è lontana da ogni moralisto e disperazione. Le poesie che riguardano il tema della sofferenza e la morte si caratterizzano della certezza e la pace e anche di un certo umorismo fondato sulla certezza della esistenza della realta piú bella di al di la

The author of the article confronts Polish Priest Janusz Stanisław Pasierb selected poems with the Carmelite masterpieces of two great catholic mystics: St John of the Cross and St Teresa of Jesus. The main aspect of analysis is the implication of the economical use of words in these Pasierb`s poems that refer to mystical experience, which was however only his great spiritual desire. The impossibility of unequivocal verbalization of aspiration for ‘union with God’ makes the necessity to limit the decorative figures in the poetics. Therefore, the poetic limitation of words is the key to understand the poetic value of soliloquium that is the sign of the particular dialog between the Priest Janusz Stanisław Pasierb, recognizing his spiritual vocation, and God.

The article is an attempt to show the way of analysing the works of Pasierb as a regional phenomenon on the one hand, and a universal poet speaking in depth about our existence on the other. In my article I suggest the reading of Pasierb’s haiku in the school practice. Due to the implementation of hermeneutics as an interpretative method, the poems may interest the students and develop their reflection on the world.

This article aims to present poetry as a record of the existential interpretation of Scripture. As an illustration of this issue, the article examines the book of “Experiencing the Earth” by Fr. W poezji ks. Janusza St. Pasierba znajdują się trzy wiersze inspirowane malarstwem Caravaggia. Dwa z nich tworzą poetycki cykl na temat obrazu Ścięcie św. Jana Chrzciciela (Oratorium św. Jana Chrzciciela, Malta). Poeta odwołuje się do biografii malarza, zwłaszcza jego awanturniczego trybu życia, oraz wnika w wydarzenia biblijne. Istotna dla jego refleksji jest przestrzeń architektury, która bogactwem wnętrza kontrastuje z surowością dokonywanej zbrodni. Poeta wykorzystuje malarską zasadę kontrastów, by ukazać sytuację człowieka współczesnego. Poetycka refleksja dotyczy różnorakich aspektów wygnania: egzystencjalnej sytuacji samotności oraz stanu grzechu, doświadczenia śmierci, pokuty i nawrócenia.
Among Rev. Janusz St. Pasierb’s poetical works there are three poems inspired by Caravaggio’s painting. Two of them make up a poetical series whose subject is the painting Beheading of St John the Baptist (Oratory of St John’s Co-Cathedral, Malta). The poet refers to the artist’s biography, and especially to his belligerent way of life, and he analyzes biblical events as well. The architectural space that with its wealth of the interior is contrasted with the harshness of the crime that is being committed, is significant for him. Using the painter’s principle of contrasts the poet shows the situation of the modern man. Poetic reflection is concerned with various aspects of exile: the existential situation of loneliness and the state of sin, the experience of death, penance and conversion.

The article presents some “linguistic” thoughts of Janusz Pasierb (1929 – 1993), contemporary Polish theologian, thinker, art historian, poet, and also – what is especially significant – a catholic priest, considered to be a wonderful preacher. Pasierb, though he was not strictly a linguist, many times paid attention to the necessity of noticing “new religious language needs”. He treated research on this issue very seriously, placing it in a wider context – in service to the Word, in the mission of continuous communion with the Word in all aspects of his life and all his activities. For him, the greatest and the most important Word was the God’s Word, while the most astonishing and touching feeling was foretelling It. Pasierb was declaring for the renewal of religious language and intensifying it to a greater degree with symbolism, imagery and metaphors. In his belief, it would be impossible to talk about complete and mature reading of “time signs” by the Church without the necessary transformation in the style of priests’ words, without their personal engagement in contact with concrete human being, together with giving the testimony of faith.

Artykuł jest próbą odkrycia w twórczości Pasierba głównych wyznaczników kondycji poety, jego doświadczeń, poczucia społecznego i kulturowego statusu. Autorka rozprawy poprzez analizy konkretnych tekstów i ich relacji z obrazami sztuki wizualnej pokazuje modelującą wtym zakresie semantycznym funkcję takich pojęć jak wygnanie, uwięzienie czy zniewolenie. Odwołanie do hermeneutyki spod znaku Paula Ricoeura umożliwiło dodatkowo postawienie ważnych tez, odnoszących się do całości dzieła poety, a wskazujących na istotną dla niego problematykę odpowiedzialności i istnienia prawdziwego (tożsamości). Artykuł dowodzi, że poezja Pasierba jest korektą kulturowego stereotypu.
The article is an attempt at discovering the main determinants of Pasierb’s condition, his experiences, his social sense and cultural status in the poet’s works. By analyzing actual texts and their relations with pictures of visual art the author of the paper shows the function of such concepts as exile, confinement or constraint that is a modeling one in the semantic range. Referring to hermeneutics of the Ricoeur type has additionally made it possible to put forward important theses concerning the whole of the poet’s work, and pointing to the issue of responsibility and true existence (identity) that is important to him. The article proves that Pasierb’s poetry is a correction of the cultural stereotype.
