Opis:
The study highlights the hydraulic properties of Akani Esuk Orok in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Twenty soil samples were collected from Akani Esuk in Calabar on a grid measuring 6 m X 6 m at a distance of 2 m apart to determine the hydraulic conductivity and to assess its influence on bulk density, particle density, total porosity and texture. The mean value of hydraulic conductivity was 14. 91cmhr-1, bulk density1.3 g cm-3, particle density 2.5 g cm-3, total porosity 47.6 %, sand content 80.1 %, silt content 8.4 % and clay content 11.5 %. The texture of the experimental plot was loamy sand. The mean values of pH were 5.4; effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) was 63.9 cmol kg-1.These values, which are rated medium for the soils are probably responsible for the luxuriant growth of several crops cultivated in the area. The mean base saturation of the soils was 58.3 %. The potassium level of the study area was low, a mean value of 0.11 2 mg kg-1. Though the soils were strongly acidic in reaction and the fertility status was considered low, medium and high taking consideration values of organic carbon, total nitrogen, ECEC and base saturation. Hence, the fertility should be maintained by planting Calopogonium municoides, Centrosema pubescens and adoption of appropriate cultural practices.

Opis:
The main tool allowing to forecast effects of gravitational beneficiation of hard coals is density analysis. The obtained results of such analysis should show real minerals liberation level in connection with their physical properties. In purpose of calculating mineral phase liberation from hard coal the size and density analysis was performed for raw hard coal which was feed directed to mineral processing. For each obtained size-density fraction its yield and ash contents were determined. The Hall’s separation curve was used in the paper to evaluate liberation efficiency of mineral phase from hard coal. The advantage of this curve is the fact that it is possible to describe it mathematically by means of hyperbolic equation. It was stated that if particle size is lower the liberation level of mineral substance grows.
Podstawowym narzędziem pozwalającym prognozować efekty wzbogacania grawitacyjnego węgli kamiennych jest analiza densymetryczna. W związku z tym otrzymane wyniki takiej analizy powinny odzwierciedlać rzeczywisty stopień uwolnienia minerałów w powiązaniu z ich właściwości fizycznymi. W celu wyliczenia uwolnienia fazy mineralnej z węgla kamiennego wykonano analizę granulometryczną i densymetryczną surowego węgla kamiennego – nadawy kierowanej do przeróbki mechanicznej. W otrzymanych klaso-frakcjach wyliczono wychody oraz oznaczono zawartość popiołu. W artykule wykorzystano krzywą separacji Halla do oceny stopnia uwolnienia frakcji mineralnej z węgla kamiennego. Zaletą krzywej separacji Halla jest to, że można ją opisać w sposób matematyczny przy pomocy równania hiperboli. Stwierdzono, że ze wraz z zmniejszaniem się wielkości ziaren wzrasta stopień uwolnienia substancji mineralnej.

Opis:
The process of enrichment in a jig has usually been described and analysed using particle density as a separation feature. However, a degree of particle loosening in the jig bed is affected by, inter alia, the terminal particle free settling velocity which in turn is affected by the size, density and shape of a particle. Therefore, the terminal particle settling velocity clearly characterises the feed transferred to a jig for the enrichment process. Taking the comprehensive particle geometric (particle size and shape) and physical properties (particle density) into account comes down to the calculation of the terminal particle settling velocity. The terminal particle settling velocity is therefore a complex separation feature which comprises three basic particle features (particle density, size and shape). This paper compares the effects of enrichment of coal fines in a jig, for two cases: when the commonly applied particle density is separation feature and for the particle settling velocity. Particle settling velocities were calculated in the selected three particle size fractions: –3.15+2.00, –10.00+8.00 and –20.00+16.00 mm based on the industrial testing of a jig for coal fines and detailed laboratory tests consisting in determining particle density, projective diameter and volume and dynamic particle shape coefficient. The calculated and drawn partition curves for two variants, i.e. when particle density and particle settling velocity were taken into account as the separation argument in selected particle size fractions, allowed to calculate and compare separation precision indicator. With the use of a statistical test, the assumption on the independence of random variables of the distribution of components included in the distribution of the particle settling velocity as a separation feature during enrichment in a jig was verified.
Zazwyczaj proces wzbogacania w osadzarce opisywano i analizowano przy użyciu gęstości ziaren jako cechy rozdziału. Jednakże na stopień rozluzowania ziaren w łożu osadzarki ma wpływ między innymi graniczna prędkość opadania swobodnego ziarna, na którą ma wpływ wielkość, gęstość i kształt ziarna. Zatem graniczna prędkość opadania ziaren w sposób jednoznaczny charakteryzuje nadawę kierowaną do procesu wzbogacania w osadzarce. Uwzględnienie kompleksowych właściwości geometrycznych ziaren (wielkość i kształt ziaren) oraz fizycznych (gęstość ziaren) sprowadza się do wyliczenia granicznej prędkości opadania ziaren. Zatem graniczna prędkość opadania ziaren jest to złożona cecha rozdziału zawierająca w sobie trzy podstawowe cechy ziarna (gęstość, wielkość i kształt ziarna).

Opis:
The separation of coal material of three types of coals originating from three various Polish hard coal mines (types 31, 34.2 and 35, according to Polish nomenclature, which were steam coal, semi-coking coal and coking coal) into particle size fractions and then into particle density fractions was done and then the following parameters were measured for each particle size-density fraction: combustion heat, ash contents, sulfur contents, volatile parts contents, analytic moisture. In this way a 7-dimensional vector of data was created. Using methods of factor analysis the important features of coal were selected, which decide about their membership to individual types. To evaluate the appropriateness of the applied method the Bartlett’s sphericity test as well coefficient of Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin (KMO) were used. To select important factors the Kaiser criterion and Cattell’s scree test were used. The obtained results were compared with the results obtained in previous works by means of observation tunnels method. The results showed which particular features are crucial to define the type of coal what is also important to select appropriate method of its enrichment. Furthermore, the construction of a mathematical model presenting the relations between these properties and particle size and density is presented. Because of the fact that particles of certain size or density may occur in neighboring fractions three sorts of relations were examined basing on regression analysis. The analysis was conducted for all three coal types. Because of the fact that the models contain various amounts of independent variables R2 coefficient, mean squared error (MSE) and Mallow’s statistics Cp were applied to evaluate and compare obtained results.
Ponadto, zaprezentowano model prezentujący relacje pomiędzy tymi cechami a wielkością i gęstością ziaren. Ponieważ ziarna określonej wielkości lub gęstości mogą występować w sąsiednich klasach lub frakcjach, wykonano trzy typy modeli, bazując na analizie regresji. Analiza została wykonana dla trzech typów węgli. Ponieważ modele zawierają różne ilości zmiennych niezależnych do oceny i porównania otrzymanych wyników zastosowano współczynnik determinacji R2, błąd średniokwadratowy (MSE) oraz statystykę Mallowa Cp.

The article discusses application of Robust Optical Flow Estimation for increasing of Particle Image Velocimetry measurement resolution. Nowadays, one of the promising approaches for increasing the performance of the PIV systems is application of the Optical Flow Estimation for image analysis. Nevertheless, some of the OF implementations do not perform well in case of motion discontinues typically occurring in the PIV images. The purpose of this study is to validate the performance of the Robust Optical Flow Estimation. The tests were performed on simulated images of vortex flow and the results were compared with displacement fields calculated with the typical correlation PIV algorithm. The velocity for high and medium particle concentration was similar for Optical Flow and PIV-like analysis. Furthermore, the performance of the robust optical flow framework was tested with images corrupted with blurs and occlusions. The tests proved good performance of proposed analysis in case of non-Gaussian sources of measurement errors. The robust estimation framework performed well in the case of common image artefacts and proved to be a promising method for precise PIV flow measurements. The presented approach can be useful in development hybrid OF-PIV post processing software aimed for high-resolution measurements and provide a help in designing of experimental investigation of microscale fluid flow phenomena.

Opis:
The role of ore properties (density, particle size, and mineralogy) in thickening process was studied in this research. The shaking table was used to prepare the sample for the tests. The tailings were continuously fed on the table by gravity to separate the tailings in three products as slime, middling and coarse particles. The solid density and particle size of the samples were different. To study the effect of mineralogical properties, the sedimentation behavior of the feed and middling samples were tested. The results showed that the free settling velocity of the feed (2–6 mm/s) was less than that of the middling sample (18–23 mm/s), and the compressibility of middling (density: 0.63–0.86 Mg/m3) was more than that of feed (density: 0.33–0.47 Mg/m3). This was due to the amount of clay reduction in the middling sample. The sedimentation behavior of the slime and the coarse samples were also compared in order to study the effect of particle size and density. The settling velocity of the slime and the coarse particles was obtained as 0.1-0.4 and 26 mm/s, respectively, and the maximum underflow density were obtained as 0.35 and 1.57 Mg/m3, respectively. Therefore, the particle size and density reduction reduced the thickener performance. In order to study the effect of particle size, the sedimentation behavior of the slime and coarse samples were compared, and it was obtained that the settling velocity and underflow density increased with the increasing in the particle size.

Opis:
The paper presents a multidimensional analysis of mineral processing feeds consisting of different amounts of different size and density fractions. The considered feed was coal which was screened into size fractions which were subsequently separated into density fractions and their weights determined. The feed material was characterized with commonly used size and density frequency and cumulative distribution plots and next approximated with the Weibull (size) and logistic (density) mathe-matical functions. Having the contribution of each particle size and density fraction in the feed a two–dimensional analysis of the feed size/density properties was performed using two methods. The first one is based on the best chosen cumulative frequency function for two random variables and the second uses the so–called Morgenstern family functions. In the paper the undependability of the particles size and density was investigated using statistical approach based on the so–called Χ2 test, and the correlation between these parameters using the so–called F–Snedecor statistical test. In both cases it was found that particles size and density of the investigated coal particles were dependent what means that with growth of particle size its density grew too and there was correlation between them regardless of significance level assumed for the analysis.

To investigate the dynamics of a planar plasma diode system (PDS), a model based on the current density equilibrium at the interface was developed. The current densities and plasma boundary variations with the potential fields were obtained by simulating a single square pulse. The variation of an observed overshoot current density with the applied voltage is presented. Planar plasma diode system was also simulated for periodic, sine, square, triangular and saw tooth voltage patterns by varying the amplitude and frequencies. A method to find the lower bound of the electron density of plasma for a specified PDS is presented. Particle-In-Cell simulation technique was used to investigate the plasma particles and electric field distributions over the anode cathode gap for different intensities of external electric fields. The system became stable after few time steps and this time depends upon the intensity and polarization of the external field.

Biochar is proven to enhance soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Given that the influence of biochar on soil compaction remains unclear, selected physico-mechanical properties of soil amended with wood-derived biochar were assessed. For unamended silt loam, the bulk density, maximum bulk density, optimum moisture content, plastic limit, liquid limit, and plasticity index were 1.05 Mg m-3, 1.69 Mg m-3, 16.55, 17.1, 29.3, and 12.2%, respectively. The penetration resistance and shear strength of the unamended silt loam compacted in the standard compaction Proctor mold and at its optimum moisture content were 1800 kPa and 850 kPa, respectively. Results from amending the silt loam with 10% particle size ranges (0.5-212 μm) led to relative decreases of 18.1, 17.75, 66.66, and 97.4% in bulk density, maximum bulk density, penetration resistance, and shear strength, respectively; a 26.8% relative increase in optimum moisture content; along with absolute increases in plastic limit, liquid limit, and plasticity index of 5.3, 13.7, and 8.4%, respectively. While the biochar-amended silt loam soil was more susceptible to compaction, however, soil mechanical impedance enhanced.

Caused by excess levels of nutrients and increased temperatures, freshwater cyanobacterial blooms have become a serious global issue. However, with the development of artificial intelligence and extreme learning machine methods, the forecasting of cyanobacteria blooms has become more feasible. We explored the use of multiple techniques, including both statistical [Multiple Regression Model (MLR) and Support Vector Machine (SVM)] and evolutionary [Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Bird Swarm Algorithm (BSA)], to approximate models for the prediction of Microcystis density. The data set was collected from Oubeira Lake, a natural shallow Mediterranean lake in the northeast of Algeria. From the correlation analysis of ten water variables monitored, six potential factors including temperature, ammonium, nitrate, and ortho-phosphate were selected. The performance indices showed; MLR and PSO provided the best results. PSO gave the best fitness but all techniques performed well. BSA had better fitness but was very slow across generations. PSO was faster than the other techniques and at generation 20 it passed BSA. GA passed BSA a little further, at generation 50. The major contributions of our work not only focus on the modelling process itself, but also take into consideration the main factors affecting Microcystis blooms, by incorporating them in all applied models.

In this paper, the performance of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes is improved, which leads to reduce the complexity of hard-decision Bit-Flipping (BF) decoding by utilizing the Artificial Spider Algorithm (ASA). The ASA is used to solve the optimization problem of decoding thresholds. Two decoding thresholds are used to flip multiple bits in each round of iteration to reduce the probability of errors and accelerate decoding convergence speed while improving decoding performance. These errors occur every time the bits are flipped. Then, the BF algorithm with a low-complexity optimizer only requires real number operations before iteration and logical operations in each iteration. The ASA is better than the optimized decoding scheme that uses the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The proposed scheme can improve the performance of wireless network applications with good proficiency and results. Simulation results show that the ASA-based algorithm for solving highly nonlinear unconstrained problems exhibits fast decoding convergence speed and excellent decoding performance. Thus, it is suitable for applications in broadband wireless networks.

Opis:
Multi-particle finite element method (MPFEM) simulation has been proven an efficient approach to study the densification behaviors during powder compaction. However, comprehensive comparisons between 2D and 3D MPFEM models should be made, in order to clarify which dimensional model produces more accurate prediction on the densification behaviors. In this paper, uniaxial high velocity compaction experiments using Ti-6Al-4V powder were performed under different impact energy per unit mass notated as Em. Both 2D and 3D MPFEM simulations on the powder compaction process were implemented under displacement control mode, in order to distinguish the differences. First, the experimental final green density of the compacts increased from 0.839 to 0.951 when Em was increased from 73.5 J/g to 171.5 J/g. Then detailed comparisons between two models were made with respect to the typical densification behaviors, such as the density-strain and density-pressure relations. It was revealed that densification of 2D MPFEM model could be relatively easier than 3D model for our case. Finally, validated by the experimental results, 3D MPFEM model generated more realistic predictions than 2D model, in terms of the final green density’s dependence on both the true strain and Em. The reasons were briefly explained by the discrepancies in both the particles’ degrees of freedom and the initial packing density.

In this digital age large amounts of information, images and videos can be found in the web repositories which accumulate this information. These repositories include personal, historic, cultural, and business event images. Image mining is a limited field in research where most techniques look at processing images instead of mining. Very limited tools are found for mining these images, specifically 3D (Three Dimensional) images. Open source image datasets are not structured making it difficult for query based retrievals. Techniques extracting visual features from these datasets result in low precision values as images lack proper descriptions or numerous samples exist for the same image or images are in 3D. This work proposes an extraction scheme for retrieving cultural artefact based on voxel descriptors. Image anomalies are eliminated with a new clustering technique and the 3D images are used for reconstructing cultural artefact objects. Corresponding cultural 3D images are grouped for a 3D reconstruction engine’s optimized performance. Spatial clustering techniques based on density like PVDBSCAN (Particle Varied Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) eliminate image outliers. Hence, PVDBSCAN is selected in this work for its capability to handle a variety of outliers. Clustering based on Information theory is also used in this work to identify cultural object’s image views which are then reconstructed using 3D motions. The proposed scheme is benchmarked with DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) to prove the proposed scheme’s efficiency. Evaluation on a dataset of about 31,000 cultural heritage images being retrieved from internet collections with many outliers indicate the robustness and cost effectiveness of the proposed method towards a reliable and just-in-time 3D reconstruction than existing state-of-the-art techniques.

Opis:
Experimental research has been carried out in a supercritical circulating fluidized bed combustor in order to indicate the effect of the bed particle size on bed-to-wall heat transfer coefficient. The bed inventory used were 0.219, 0.246 and 0.411 mm Sauter mean particles diameter. The operating parameters of a circulating fluidized bed combustor covered a range from 3.13 to 5.11 m/s for superficial gas velocity, 23.7 to 26.2 kg/(m2s) for the circulation rate of solids, 0.33 for the secondary air fraction and 7500 to 8440 Pa pressure drop. Furthermore, the bed temperature, suspension density and the main parameters of cluster renewal approach were treated as experimental variables along the furnace height. The cluster renewal approach was used in order to predict the bed-to-wall heat transfer coefficient. A simple semi-empirical method was proposed to estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient inside the furnace as a function of particle size and suspension density. The computationally obtained results were compared with the experimental data of this work.

Opis:
Rapeseed by-products of seeds de-oiling, particularly expellers and post-extracted meal, are currently considered an important biomass that can be used as an alternative energy source, either in raw form or after conversion to biochar. Rapeseed biomass represents a difficult-to-handle cargo, mainly due to its sensitivity to mechanical, climatic, and biological impacts, as well as its dusty nature. This study aims to determine the physical properties of rapeseed meals and their fractions. Morphological and chemical features of six particle sets are investigated in order to explain the variation in their physical properties having importance in handling and transportation processes. The true density of fractions increases when the particle size decreases due to the diminishing quantitative share of seed coats. No correlation is observed between true and bulk densities, as the particle shape, surface sculpture, and adhesion affect the mutual particle arrangements. Along with a decrease in the particle size from 0.4 mm, a rapid decrease in the flowability is observed. The tendency of the finest dust (d < 0.075 mm) to form agglomerated complexes causes its lower bulk density, higher porosity, and higher angles of repose in comparison to coarse dust (0.075–0.4 mm). It is concluded that a relatively low tendency to free flowing of natural RSM is mainly caused by its wide-ranging particle size distribution and their geometry differentiation, which facilitate mutual particle interlockings. The known cases of blockages of silos, bins, hoppers, and transfer chutes may be mainly caused by the powder fractions (< 0.2 mm), with a much lower flowability than other particles.
