Concentration of glycogen, maltose, and trehalose as well as the activity of hydrolases catabolising them: «-amylases, glucoamylase, maltase, and trehalase were studied during a 48 h infection of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) instar larvae infected with infective Heterorhabditis zealandica (20 nematodes/insect). The content of trehalose in the infected insects during the first day of infection was higher (p < 0.05) than in the controls. The concentration of maltose and glycogen were similar in both groups despite the fact that the activity of all examined o-glycosidases was generally much higher in the infected insects than in the controls.

Opis:
Background. The influence of infection with two species of entomopathogenic nematodes of Steinernematidae family on the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) of the host was studied. Material and methods. Last instar larvae of Galleria mellonella were experimentally infected with Steinernema affinis and S. feltiae at 20 invasive juveniles per insect. At 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 h after infection activity of SOD was determined in extracts from infected and control insects. Results. The activity of SOD decreased gradually in the controls during the experiment. The activity of enzyme was 2-4-times higher in insects from both infected groups than in the control. During the first 12 h of infection the activity of SOD in insects infected with S. feltiae was higher than in those infected with S. affinis, then the activity of enzyme in the insects of both infected groups stayed at a similar level. A significant decrease of SOD activity in infected was recorded in second day of the infection.

The potential tertiary structure of Ancylostoma ceylanicum cysteine proteinase was obtained by Automatic Program 3D-JIGSAW and used for finding homologues of known structure by VAST program. The results of computational analysis showed the presence of domains recognizing host immunoglobulins. Based on this analysis we suggest that this protein is involved in cleaving of host antibodies and therefore it may be promising vaccine candidate. In this paper we present the computational analysis of parasitic antigen which is very helpful in evaluation of the potential role of this protein.

Background. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of roundworm infection in working horses slaughtered for meat. In these horses anthelmintics had not been used. Material and methods. Roundworms were collected post-mortem from small intestines of 83 horses. Results. The mean prevalence of roundworm infection was 12% and intensity 46.7 specimens per horse. Infection was found only in foals; 10 animals were infected (45.4%) among the 22 examined. Due to common occurrence of roundworms (Parascaris equorum) in foals this nematode control should focus particularly on regular anthelmintic treatment of young horses, providing proper hygienic conditions for them and checking the infection level by coproscopical methods.

Opis:
Parasitological examination of 273 pumpkinseed sunfish, caught in the warm water channel at the Dolna Odra Power Plant in Stare Czarnowo near Szczecin was carried out. The total lengths of the fish ranged from 6.8 to 18.1 cm (13.3 cm means), infected fish 9.8 to 17.5 cm. In 48 individuals the presence of nematodes representing 4 species has been found: Schulmanela petruschewskii, Raphidascaris acus, Spiroxys contortus and Contracaecum sp. In total the number of nematodes found was 319, the mean intensity of infection was 6.64. The greatest number of fish infected with parasites was caught in June and April. The most frequently noted has been S. petruschewskii, found in adult forms as well as in larval stage in the liver, intestine, stomach and peritoneum in 40 specimens. In total the number of this nematode found was 305. The least frequent has been S. contortus, rarely found in Poland and for the first time noted in sunfish. Usually one fish was invaded by one species of nematodes.

Opis:
Basing on 43 lectures and reports from the scope of current parasitological and mycological issues presented during the 50th Jubilee Clinical Day of Medical Parasitology (Lodz, 19–20 May 2011), the increasing importance of parasitic diseases and mycoses in medicine was presented. Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of both imported parasitoses (malaria, intestinal amoebiosis, mansonelliasis) and native parasitoses (toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis, CNS cysticercosis), as well as parasitic invasions coexisting with HIV infection (microsporidiosis) have been emphasized. The possibility of human parasites transmission by vertical route and transfusion has been discussed. The important issue of diagnostic problems in intestinal parasitoses has been addressed, noting the increasing use of immunoenzymatic methods which frequently give false positive results. It was highlighted that coproscopic study is still the reference method for detecting parasitic intestinal infections. The mechanism of the immune reaction induced by intestinal nematodes resulting in, among others, inhibition of the host innate and acquired response was presented. Mycological topics included characteristics of various clinical forms of mycoses (central nervous system, oral cavity and pharynx, paranasal sinuses, nails and skin), still existing problem of antimicrobial susceptibility of fungal strains, diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of zoonotic mycoses and the importance of environmental factors in pathogenesis of mycosis.
