Opis:
This article offers an edition of an unpublished fragment in the J. Rendel Harris collection at the University of Birmingham. The fragment appears to date from the second half of the fourth century and is noteworthy because it mentions a bishop of the city of Oxyrhynchus. While the name of the bishop is partially lost, the name Dorotheus appears to be the most likely candidate. If such is the case, this is the first piece of papyrological evidence for this bishop who otherwise only appears in ecclesiastical records as an attendee of the Council of Constantinople in A.D. 381.

One of the only papyri found during T. The edition of the text is followed by an appendix on the terminology of papyrus sheets and rolls (especially ⲥⲕⲉⲧⲁⲗⲏ / σχεδάριον) as well as some remarks on prices.

Derveni Papyrus
Opis:
This article concerns the Derveni Papyrus – precisely, the cosmogony and theogony which the Papyrus includes. It is mainly based on the foreign-language literature (especially English) gathered and listed in the Bibliography. The main aim of the article is to present and approximate the status quaestionis of the Derveni text in the way which the article title expresses. The Derveni Papyrus is dated –  approximately –  to the fourth century BC. Today it is being examined against the background of the ancient exegesis history. This dual text which reveals some connections with the Orphic religious orientation – at least by the fact of speaking about Orpheus as an authority, or describing in its first part (col. I-VI) probably an Orphic religious rite –  still causes many difficulties to the scholars. The problem of the authorship which determining would definitely be helpful in the proper interpretation of its purpose and meaning remains unsolved so far. Not only is the Derveni text dual in its structure, but also double-plane. The first plane is one of the Orphic theogonies. It  is comprised in the poem ascribed to Orpheus which is quoted in the Derveni text. The second plane concerns the cosmogonic exegesis. The sum of the planes gives the reader a picture of the universe in the shape the Derveni author – who probably stayed also under the influence of the presocratic philosophy – must have ‘seen’ it. The cosmogony which we can read from the exegesis sees the prime mover that plays an active part in the universe in the divine Mind/air. In this cosmogony the beginning of all of the processes in the world is dependent on the moment when the airy Νοῦς creates the Sun. This article is definitely not exhaustive, since it is only a brief sketch of all of the information that we can find in the foreign language literature on the Derveni Papyrus. Nevertheless, it is supposed to be synthetic, as far as it is possible, and fairly objective.

The wastewater from small communities and rural areas, usually discharged in an unsuitable manner, requires an appropriate treatment. The floating treatment wetland has revealed a great potential due to good performance, low cost and low maintenance means of improving water quality over a broad range of applications. The aim of this article was to present the results of the adaptation period (57 days) of a macrophyte plant “Cyperus papyrus” and its potential for treating wastewater generated by the campus of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) of Rabat. Two hydraulic retention times were applied: 2 and 4 days. Pilot experimental setups (two tanks) were installed: one tank where the macrophyte, being the subject of the study, was installed and the other served as a control. The macrophyte plants were suspended in floating mat, keeping the plant roots permanently in contact with the water and removing pollutants via several processes. During the adaptation of the plant which concerned four parameters: the evolution of the density, the height of the stems, the number of shoots as well as the state of health of the plants, a period of adaptation to the medium of implantation of fifty-seven days was observed. Along this adaptation phase, the results showed that: plant density increased from 9 to 29 units; the heights of the four identified stems of Cyperus papyrus increased from 15, 6, 11 and 8 cm to 73, 43, 30 and 24 cm, respectively; the appearance of 72 shoots and the plant has completed the adaptation phase in good health (absence of disease Symptoms). The treated water obtained from outlet and wastewaters were analyzed for various water quality parameters, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Suspended Solids (SS). The floating treatment wetlands system is able to remove 37.8% of COD; 47.6% of BOD5and 74.4% of SS for HRT of 2 days and 63.7% of COD; 78.4% of BOD5 and 89.1% of SS for HRT of 4 days. Moreover, it was found that the purification efficiency in terms of these three pollution parameters is all the more important as the hydraulic retention time is high.

The epistolary practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in the Ptolemaic Greek private letters: such a formula appeared in combination with the wish for the addressee’s health. In the Roman period, a new health wish arose in the Greek private letters, and the combination of this new formula valetudinis and the information about the sender’s health became rather rare (only about twenty occurrences). Such attestation often appear in letters of a Latin environment, for example letters written in Italy , letters from soldiers, or letters from areas in which the Romans were very active, like Eastern Desert. Given that the practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in Latin letters from the Roman period, I argue in this paper that the relative absence of this topos in Greek letters from Roman times is due to Latin influence.

For more than 600 years Aqaba flasks were manufactured at Aila. In the Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic periods they occur at a fair number of sites in the southern Levant, in particular in the Arava Valley and the Negev desert. A flask with fish residue was discovered in a domestic context at Petra. The residue was identified as garum prepared from Red Sea fish. The evidence for the production of fish sauce at Aila raises the question of whether flasks and fish products are interconnected. It is suggested here that the wide distribution of flasks is related to the export of garum from Aila. Admittedly, so far the suggestion is largely hypothetical; however, the importance of regional fish trade and consumption, attested at many inland sites, and the fishing facilities on the Red Sea point to a prevailing diet of fish products.

Opis:
The paper presents a study on translations of a Greek word ποταμοφόρητος occurring in Rev 12 : 15. The Greek hapax legomenon ποταμοφόρητος is used in Rev 12 : 15. The part of the sentence containing ποταμοφόρητος is translated as: to sweep her away with the current. G. Schneider suggests a correction of the meaning of the word, concentrating on the conjectural purpose of being taken by water (drowning). In order to analyse this issue we begin with the study of etymology of the ποταμοφόρητος. It comes from the noun ποταμός and the adjective φορητός, which is a derivative of φορέω. Composita (compounds) formed with φορητός did not refer to any idea of a mortal threat. Till the turn of 19th century ποταμοφόρητος, apart from the Bible, was only certified in the Hesychius’ Lexicon (5th or 6th century). The Egyptian papyri, uncovered and analysed on the turn of the 19th and the 20th century, in which the ποταμοφόρητος is related to the overflows of the Nile, let us doubt Schneider’s proposal, however, still do not solve the problem. The next stage of the research consisted of the analysis of the classical and antique translations of Rev (VL, Vg, Syriac and Coptic translations), as well as Latin and Greek patristic commentaries, which support one of the aforementioned interpretations. The commentators understood the river carrying the Woman as the image of Church persecution and a desire to place the Church under the command of evil forces. One of the versions of the translation of Vetus Latina (type I) suggests that the archetype of the water torrent in Rev was the Nile. In the light of classical explanations as to the reasons of the river’s floodings, as well as the parallel in Ezek 29 : 3. 6 we can assume that it was the Nile that served as the archetype of the spewing torrent for the author of the Revelation.

Opis:
At the International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome on 18 September2012, Professor Karen L. King, Hollis Professor of Divinity fromHarvard Divinity School, presented a papyrus fragment with Coptic text, known as The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife. This document includes very problematicsentence: „Jesus said to them: My wife…”. Prof. King maintains inher article that the papyrus comes from the 4th century and contains Coptictranslation of a gospel, possibly written in Greek in the second century, although there is no consensus among the experts on this matter. This article engages in the debate on The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife and firstincludes the description of the manuscript and its datation, then provides theCoptic text with its translation and in finally the comparison is made of theGospel with the selected verses from another Coptic document: The Gospelof Thomas. The article shows, that The Gospel of Jesus’Wife is a modernforgery, written on a scrap of ancient papyrus and that most of words andexpressions, used in this document, comes from The Gospel of Thomas.
