Opis:
A palynological study of recent sediments from Ijora Creek, an Urban Creek in Lagos, Southwestern Nigeria was carried out to provide inferences on paleovegetation and climate change over time in the study area. Two stations 90m apart were sampled at low tide in a boat using a Russian peat corer. Samples were taken at 10cm intervals and eighteen sediments samples were collected and processed using standard palynological methods. Two hundred and sixty six (266) and two hundred and thirty three (231) palynomorphs were recovered from stations 1 and 2 respectively. Palynomorphs recovered and identified to species level include Alchornea cordifolia, Hymenocardia acida, Elaeis guineensis, Spathodea companulata, Triumfetta pentandra, Uapaca acuminata, Tridax procumbens, Berlinia sp., Eugenia sp., Celtis sp., Albizia sp., Cyperus sp. together with species of Poaceae, Asteraceae, Arecaceae, Eurphorbiaceae, Acanthaceae, with common microforaminiferal test linings and fungal spores. Poaceae and fungal spores dominated the assemblage while station 1 recorded the highest pollen and spore abundance. The presence of microforaminiferal wall linings, fungal spores and the freshwater swamp species Alchornea cordifolia and the oil palm pollen Elaeis guineensis suggests a dominantly wet period in which, there was a marked marine transgression into the creek, interrupted occasionally by dry climate as inferred from the abundant records of Poaceae and Asteraceae. The presence of secondary forest species especially Elaeis guineensis suggests the impact of human activities on the paleovegetation.

Palynological assemblages were used in the determination of the age and paleoenvironment of the Nkporo and Enugu Formations of the Anambra Basin, Southeastern Nigeria. Palynological analysis carried out in over twenty-five samples (25) yielded spores, pollens and marine species. The main diagnostic species of spores and pollen recovered includes; Foveotriletes margaritae, Distaverrusporites simplex, Cingulatisporites ornatus, Echitriporites trianguliformis, Longapertites marginatus, Proteacidites segali, Monocolpites marginatus, Constructipollenites ineffectus, Buttinia andreevi, and Retidiporites which were dated to Late Campanian to Earliest Maastrichtian. Also, other sporomorphs includes; Longapertites marginatus (overwhelming abundance), Longapertites microfoveolatus, Longapertites vaneedenburgi, Spinizonocolpites baculatus, Foveotriletes margaritae, Distaverrusporites simplex, Cingulatisporites ornatus, Matonisporites equiexinus, Azolla marsulae, Mauritidiites crassibaculatus, Constructipollenites ineffectus, Echitriporites trianguliformis, Foveotriletes margaritae, and Leiotriletes minor were assigned to Early Maastrichtian. From the palynological analysis, the age-diagnostic index palynomorphs reveal that the Nkporo Group is within Late Campanian to Early Maastrichtian and the depositional environment is mostly marginal marine to marine.

Opis:
The Early Jurassic succession of the Holy Cross Mountains region in Poland offers a rare opportunity to study ecosystem complexity during the evolution and diversification of early dinosaurs, especially herbivorous ones. The section consists of continental and coastal deposits containing fossil assemblages spanning nearly 25 My of changes in terrestrial plants and some groups of invertebrates and tetrapods. Based on macrofossils and pollen and spores, the broader characteristics of the flora in this succession are presented. The floral assemblages show typical Early Jurassic characteristics and contain lycopsids, sphenopsids, ferns, cycadaleans, bennettitaleans, gnetaleans and ginkgoaleans, as well as conifers, and are similar to other Hettangian–Toarcian floral successions in Europe, showing the presence of a vast coniferous forest dominated by Hirmeriella in the early Hettangian, replaced by ginkgophyte-dominated floras in younger stages and araucarian conifer-dominated forests in the late Pliensbachian. Dinosaurs are documented mainly from their trace fossils (tracks and coprolites). Six distinct track assemblages (stratigraphically separated ichnoassemblages) of different ages can be identified. Current evidence indicates that while Anomoepus tracks are abundant throughout the long Hettangian–late Pliensbachian interval, medium-sized to large ornithischian tracks do not occur below the lower–middle Hettangian transition zone, associated with the first major marine transgression in the region. Hettangian strata with different theropod tracks (Grallator, Anchisauripus, Eubrontes, Kayentapus, cf. Megalosauripus), small Anomoepus tracks, numerous medium-sized Anomoepus-like tracks, Moyenisauropus tracks, tetradactyl tracks of sauropodomorphs (cf. Pseudotetrasauropus) and oval-shaped tracks of sauropods (Parabrontopodus) significantly contrast with the higher part of the Lower Jurassic succession (upper Pliensbachian Drzewica Formation and middle–upper Toarcian Borucice Formation) containing new types of medium-sized to large theropod tracks (Therangospodus), small and medium-sized bird-like tridactyl tracks (cf. Trisauropodiscus, cf. Anomoepus), exceptionally large, oval-shaped sauropod tracks (Sauropoda indet.), and new types of medium-sized and large ornithischian tracks (cf. Deltapodus, cf. Anomoepus). This points to a noticeable difference between the Hettangian and late Pliensbachian–Toarcian dinosaur ichnofaunas and may facilitate the study of regional and global changes and correlations. Both the palaeofloras and dinosaur trace fossils document ecosystem diversity and ecosystem changes, presented here in review form. The nature of these changes requires more detailed study, but preliminary results suggest the occurrence of rather complex and pronounced transformations in the dinosaur communities of the Holy Cross Mountains region. Based on our observations, the most significant event in Early Jurassic ecosystems took place within the Hettangian (change in floristic composition, the emergence of new groups of dinosaurs), but we also found what we believe to be a record of a major faunal turnover across the late Pliensbachian–middle–late Toarcian interval.

Opis:
The dispersed miospore assemblage of the Retispora lepidophyta-Verrucosisporites nitidus (LN) Zone from the Holy Cross Mountains(Poland) is marked by enrichment (above 4%) in abnormal spore morphotypes during a terrestrial flora turnover close to the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary, recorded just above the Hangenberg Black Shale level. Incomplete and complete tetrads represent mostly Vallatisporites spp., supplemented by Grandispora, Retusotriletes and Apiculiretusispora. Additional peculiar morphotypes, marked byanomalous overall shape and ornamentation, are interpreted as mutated varieties of Vallatisporites based on intermediate morphologicalstages, connecting them with this well known genus. This relatively high aberrant palynomorph frequency is accompanied by volcanicash intercalations, as well as by charcoal debris and polycyclic aromatic biomarkers indicative of forest wildfire. Thus, the anomalousspore morphology could reflect the mutagenic effect of regional acidification due to explosive volcanism. However, palynological literature data from NW France and Canada highlight the possibility of a supra-regional mutated miospore signal near the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary, and there is need for high-resolution studies of the LN Zone to examine this. The end-Permian scenario of abnormalfloral growth in immensely stressed habitats may therefore apply to other potentially volcanically-induced biotic turnovers.

Opis:
The paper give a biostratigraphic interpretation of the Emsian to Eifelian in the Łysogóry and Kielce regions of the Holy Cross Mountains, based on the different groups of microfossils: miospores, conodonts, ostracods and foraminifers. Four miospore zones were identified in the uppermost Pragian, Emsian and lowermost Eifelian: Verrucosisporites polygonalis-Dibolisporites wetteldorfensis (PW), Emphanisporites annulatus-Brochotriletes bellatulus (AB), Emphanisporites foveolatus-Verruciretusispora dubia (FD) and Acinosporites apiculatus-Grandispora protea (AP). In the Łysogóry region, the Emsian and lowermost Eifelian comprises four cono-dont zones: serotinus, patulus, partitus and costatus, three ostracod assemblages and several foraminifer assemblages. In the Kielce region, deposits from the Emsian/Eifelian boundary interval yield conodonts from the patulus and partitus zones, two ostracod assemblages and assemblages of agglutinated foraminifers. The joint biostratigraphic analysis allows a tentative correlation of the lithostratigraphic units from both areas. It also provides independent control/calibration on the different biostratigraphical systems. The Pragian/Emsian boundary is located in the lower part of the Barcza Formation and in the lower part of the Haliszka Formation, whereas the Emsian/Eifelian boundary lies in the upper part of the Grzegorzowice Formation and in the upper part of the Winna Formation.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of the 1st mid-Polish lignite seam (MPLS-1) of the Drzewce deposit (Konin region, central Poland) was used as the data source for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic interpretations. Lignites of the 1st group developed in the middle Miocene, during and shortly after the last peak of the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum, over a large area of Poland, and they are the youngest of the main Neogene lignite seams in Poland. In the Konin region, these lignites have a relatively significant thickness (up to 20 m) and therefore they are (or were in the past) exploited in several open-pit mines. A total of 36 palynological samples from the 6.3-m-thick seam of the Drzewce opencast mine was studied in detail. Palynological analysis of the lignite seam indicates that the area was overgrown by palustrine wetland communities, similar in composition to modern pocosins. The most characteristic elements of them were shrubs in the Ericaceae family. The climate at that time was warm temperate and humid. The estimated mean annual temperature (MAT) for the lignite seam at Drzewce is 15.7–17.8 °C. Comparison with other palynofloras from the MPLS-1 shows that the climate during the formation of the group of seams was more or less homogenous across the entire Polish Lowlands. Sedimentological data and results of palynological studies (including NPPs) at Drzewce indicate that the palaeomires were relatively distant from the channels of the river system in the Konin Basin. The fossil fungal assemblage indicates dense vegetation on damp, swampy soils and the presence of small, shallow-water bodies, with a variable water level or even periodic reservoirs, existing only during the wet season or after floods. In small, flooded depressions, such as the pools in bogs, filamentous green algae occurred. The presence of zygospores of the desmids Desmidiaceaesporites cosmarioformis most probably indicates relatively nutrient-poor (ombrotrophic) conditions. Fluctuations in the frequency of individual plant taxa (including Sequoia and Sciadopitys) are likely to reflect changes in water level and trophic conditions.

There have been disparities about the age of the Eze-Aku Formation, Anambra Basin south eastern Nigeria. Eleven surface samples of the Eze-Aku Shales from the River Obey in Umudi village, Lokpanta Abia state were subjected to standard palynological, palynofacies, kerogen preparation and analysis. A diversified palynoflora with preponderance of typical Late Cenomanian to Early Turonian diagnostic palynomorphs were recovered. Common taxa were Elaterosporites protensus, cf. Elateropollenites jardinei, Steevesipollenites binodosus, Steevesipollenites grambasti, Gnetaceaepollenites barghoornii, G. diversus, G. clathratus, Galeocornea causea, Classopollis spp., Podocarpidites herbstii, Fraxionoipollenites venustus, Cretaceaporites mulleri, Cicatricosisporites venustus, and the dinoflagellate cysts Callaiosphaeridium trycherium, Oligosphaeridium pulcherrimum, O. complex, O. albertense, Pseudoceratium pelliferum, Florentinia resex, Heterosphaeridium difficile, Surculosphaeridium longifurcatum, Cribroperidinium orthoceras and different species of Dinogymnium. Angiosperm pollens were scarce while gymnosperms were moderate due to the evolutionary trend of the flowering plants in the early Cretaceous. Structured phytoclasts with sparse amorphous organic matter which indicated deposition in nearshore to marginal marine environments dominated the palynofacies. The sporomorph colour indicated mature oil and gas generation potentials.

A new palaeopalynological investigation was conducted on 15 samples from four test-pits at the Gray Fossil Site (Bear Pit, Elephant Pit, Test Pit 2-2010, and Rhino Pit). In total, 50 morpho-species of miospores (including five species of spores, eight species of gymnosperm pollen, and 37 species of an giosperm pollen) and 18 morpho-species of fresh water algal micro-remains were identified. One new morphological species, related to zygospores of the Zygnemataceae, Stigmozygodites grayensis sp. nov., is proposed. The assemblage of fossil algae recovered provides in sights into the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the uppermost (125 cm) part of the Gray Fossil Site sedimentary cover, deposited after the formation of a number of sink holes, and the fill of the palaeosinkholes. Most of the algae identified prefer meso- to eutrophic conditions and are characteristic of stagnant to slowly flowing shallow fresh water. Therefore, the lacustrine fossiliferous sediments at the Gray Fossil Site represent pond deposits. The palaeopalynological analysis revealed differences in the composition of the miospore and algal assemblages of the pits studied, suggesting that the Test Pit 2-2010, Bear, and Elephant pits are similar and may have been formed in the same pond, while the presence of a higher percentage of algae in the Rhino Pit may indicate sedimentation in a separate waterbody.

Opis:
This article is the first approach analyzing the non-pollen palynomorphs types (NPP) occurring in palynological samples from the peats profiles of the Lublin Polesie region, which are substantial bioindicators of paleohydrological changes in the Holocene. The analysis of NPP was made in peat samples from three sites: Płotycze, Mytycze and Durne Bagno. A dozen or so NPPs types have been described, among which there were microfossils of animal origin: Habrotrocha angusticolis, Copepoda spermatophores, Turbellaria and testate amoebae: (Assulina muscorum, Arcella artocrea, Arcella discoides, Archerella flavum) and also microfossils of fungal origin: Microthyrium, HdV 13, Helicoon pluriseptatum, Bryophytomyces sphagni. Diagrams of percentage participation of NPPs in the three profiles (Figs. 3–5) allowed to distinguish NPPs zones with variable participation of particular types of NPPs and to interpret them against the background of selected pollen types of water and rush vegetation as well as Sphagnum spores for paleohydrological changes. The highest variability of paleohydrological conditions was recorded in the Durne Bagno peat bog. The same types of non-pollen palynomorphs are common in peat bogs of the European Lowlands. Most of them are cosmopolitan species. Identified NPPs in peat bogs of the Lublin Polesie are in accordance with the descriptions provided by the international determination keys.

Analizie na obecność NPP poddano torfy z trzech stanowisk: Płotycze, Mytycze i Durne Bagno.  Oznaczono kilkanaście typów NPP wśród których występowały mikrofosylia pochodzenia zwierzęcego i grzybowego. Te same typy mikrofosyliów pozapyłkowych są powszechnie w torfowiskach Niżu Europejskiego. Większość z nich stanowią bowiem gatunki kosmopolityczne. Zidentyfikowane NPP w torfach Polesia Lubelskiego są zgodne z opisami zawartymi w międzynarodowych kluczach do oznaczania.
