Opis:
The Crimean taxon at issue has long been known as Stankiewicz pine with continuing discussion around its taxonomical rank and origin. In 1995, the authors discovered the new isolated population of the taxon on Papayakaya Mt. in Crimean Sub-Mediterranean. Due to hypothetical paleogeographic reconstruction ofPleistocene coastal landscapes here, together with some newest taxonomical data, authors reinforce the notion of relict and infraspecific status of the taxon that should be related to Pinus brutia var. pityusa.

Silurian land plants from the Holy Cross Mts. are described for the first time. The fossil assemblage occurs in a nearshore, marine, terrigenous deposit of Ludlowian/Pridolian age. It contains Cooksonia sp., Cooksonia−related species, and some problematical forms. The flora, which needs further study, is of importance to our understanding of early vascular plants and Late Silurian palaeogeography.

A new gobiconodontid from Vallipón (Teruel, Spain) represents the first record of this family in Europe. The site has a diverse fossil assemblage mainly composed of isolated bones and teeth probably accumulated by tidal action and water streams in an ancient beach of upper Barremian, in the transitional marine−continental sediments of the Artoles Formation. The new gobiconodontid consist of an isolated upper molar, smaller in size than that element in other gobiconodontids, with a robust cusp A, characterised by lateral bulges on each mesial and distal flanges of that cusp, and a discontinuous cingulum raised at the lingual side. The occlusal outline is smooth compared with Gobiconodon borissiaki, Gobiconodon hoburensis, or Gobiconodon ostromi. The Gobiconodontidae record is exclusively Laurasiatic. The oldest gobiconodontid fossil remains are Hauterivian; though their probable origin has to be found at the Late Jurassic in Central Asia (as inferred from derived character of the first gobiconodontids as well as phylogenetic relationships). At the end of the Early Cretaceous they expanded throughout Laurasia as indicated by findings in Asia, North America, and Spain. Two dispersion events spread gobiconodontids: to the West (Europe) in the Barremian and to the East (North America) during the Aptian/Albian.

Opis:
A newly discovered trilobite fauna from the early to middle Permian Qarari Unit of northeastern Sultanate of Oman is described. It comprises exceptionally complete and well-preserved examples of five proetoid species, belonging to genera typical of an eastern Tethyan region extending through southern Asia to Timor. The shallow shelf fauna compares closely with one of Artinskian age from Afghanistan. Permian species previously assigned to Paladin are here considered unrelated to this predominantly Carboniferous clade, and are placed in a new ditomopygine genus, Simulopaladin, type species Simulopaladin tridentifer sp. nov. Three other ditomopygine species are described: Hentigia ornata sp. nov., Iranaspidion elephas sp. nov., and Acanthophillipsia felicitae sp. nov. The proetid Triproetus bonbon sp. nov. is the most complete material known of a more widespread genus.

Opis:
The studied brachiopod assemblages from the uppermost Lower Ordovician beds of Peru are of very low diversity and are among the northernmost known strata of that age in South America. They have been collected at the Carcel Puncco canyon of the Inambari River, near San Gabán in the easternmost Eastern Cordillera. Of the six species described, Euorthisina orthiformis and Paralenorthis immitatrix were already known from the Bolivian outcrops of the same Andean Eastern Cordillera; two species are new: Ahtiella zarelae Villas sp. nov. and Paralenorthis carlottoi Villas sp. nov. The new species of Ahtiella, of late Floian age, represent the oldest record of the genus characteristic of Celtic assemblages. During the early Mid Ordovician the genus migrated eastward from this region into the north margin of proto−Avalonia and after that, in Llanvirn times, into Baltica. During the early Llanvirn Ahtiella also migrated westward reaching the Precordillera Argentina region. Brachiopod faunal affinities suggest that there was a closer proximity of Avalonia with the Central Andean Basin, in similar temperate latitudes, than with the Southwestern European Platform, placed in very high latitude. Paralenorthis does not give any palaeogeographical signal, since it is known from all latitudes and palaeocontinents. Nevertheless, the occurrence of Euorthisina reinforces the Gondwanan signature of the region, since this genus spread during the Arenig throughout the middle latitude belt at the Gondwana margins, although it also colonised sub−polar latitudes, coinciding with the Llanvirn transgression over North Gondwana.

Torfowisko Bagno Staw i Bagno Bubnów tworzą jeden z największych zwartych kompleksów torfowisk węglanowych we wschodniej Polsce.
The fen of Bagno Staw, along with the fen of Bagno Bubnów, form one of the most dense complexes of alkaline fens in Eastern Poland. The main objective of this study was to determine the conditions for the development of the fen of Bagno Staw, to reconstruct the paleomorfology of the substrate and to establish the main directions of litofacial succession. Research material new in terms of quality was obtained on the basis of a detailed paleoenvironmental study based on multivariate analysis of biogenic sediments, which involves: sedimentological, physicochemical, plant macrofossils and radiocarbon dating analyses. The material provides the basis for reflections on the morphogenesis and evolution of alkaline wetlands in Lublin Polesie. The results of the analysis indicate that: (1) a very varied substratum form with numerous separate sedimentary basins developed in the carbonate substrate, (2) the oldest biogenic sediments are from the Late Glacial, (3) there is a large differentiation of litofacial deposits in the depth profile, with little differentiation in the horizontal profile, documenting the two limnic phases which are separated by peat deposits. Plant succession progressed from a moss-peat phase to a sedge peat and sedge-moss peat phase.

Opis:
Ammonite distribution patterns and carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from the Lipnik-Kije (Poland) and Dubovcy (Ukraine) sections allow us to propose a model of sea water paleo-circulation in central Europe for the Coniacian-Santonian interval. The tectonic evolution of the south-eastern part of Poland, and expansion of the Krukienic Island areas, appears to have been one of the most important factors affecting paleotemperatures and the distribution of ammonite faunas in the shallow, epicontinental sea in this part of Europe. In the Lipnik-Kije section, low-latitude Tethyan ammonites, especially of the genera Nowakites, Parapuzosia and Saghalinites, are mixed with the cold water loving ammonite genus Kitchinites in the Lower Santonian. In the Dubovcy section (western Ukraine), Tethyan ammonites disappear abruptly in the earliest Santonian, giving place to temperate ammonites of the Kitchinites group in the early Early Santonian and to Boreal belemnites of the genus Gonioteuthis in the Middle and Late Santonian. Despite evidence for the effects of diagenesis in both sections, bulk-rock δ18O records from the limestones support higher seawater paleotemperatures in the Polish sea and cooler conditions in the western Ukraine. The proposed paleo-circulation model and paleotemperature distribution across Europe is supported independently by changes in faunal and nannoflora evidence (ammonites, foraminifera and nannoplankton), and rather unexpectedly with the bulk δ18O data. These data allow the recognition of the end-Coniacian–Early Santonian cooling event, resulting from cold currents flowing from the north, which is traceable, with different magnitude, in several European sections. Facies changes in both sections are related to the input of terrigenous material, and linked to Subhercynian tectonic movements which affected the eastern (Ukrainian) and central (Holy Cross) segment of the Mid Polish Trough at different times. Uplift and sediment input moved westwards through time. Clastic input is detectable at the Coniacian–Santonian boundary in the Ukrainian segment. Similar facies changes reached the Holy Cross segment in Poland distinctly later, somewhen in the Middle Santonian. It is likely that tectonics together with paleo-circulation changes markedly restricted or even cut-off the western Ukraine area from Tethyan ocean influences in the Early Santonian.

Opis:
The early Eocene locality of La Borie is located in the village of Saint-Papoul, in southern France. These Eocene fluvio- lacustrine clay deposits have yielded numerous vertebrate remains. Mammalian taxa found in the fossiliferous levels indicate an age near the reference level MP 8–9, which corresponds to the middle Ypresian, early Eocene. Here we provide a detailed description of the avian remains that were preliminarily reported in a recent study of the vertebrate fauna from La Borie. A maxilla, a quadrate, cervical vertebrae, a femur and two tibiotarsi are assigned to the giant ground bird Gastornis parisiensis (Gastornithidae). These new avian remains add to the fossil record of Gastornis, which is known from the late Paleocene to middle Eocene of Europe, early Eocene of Asia and early Eocene of North America. Gastornis parisiensis differs from the North American Gastornis giganteus in several features, including the more ventral position of the narial openings and the slender orbital process of quadrate. Two tibiotarsi and one tarsometatarsus are assigned to a new genus and species of Geranoididae, Galligeranoides boriensis gen. et sp. nov. So far, this family was known only from the early and middle Eocene of North America. The fossils from La Borie constitute the first record of the Geranoididae in Europe. We show that Gastornis coexisted with the Geranoididae in the early Eocene of both Europe (La Borie) and North America (Willwood Formation). The presence of Geranoididae and the large flightless bird Gastornis on either side of the present-day North Atlantic provides further evidence that a high-latitude land connection existed between Europe and North America in the early Eocene.

Poziomy egzotykowe w strefie krynickiej grupują się w utworach formacji szczawnickiej, zarzeckiej i magurskiej. Wśród egzotyków skał osadowych strefy krynickiej rozpoznano: pelagiczne wapienie tytonu-neokomu oraz litotamniowe wapienie paleogenu. W egzotykach magmowych większość to wulkanity, natomiast skały metamorficzne to głównie łupki łyszczykowe i gnejsy. Egzotyki skał osadowych i krystalicznych strefy krynickiej różnią się od tych z formacji jarmuckiej (mastrycht--paleocen) jednostki Grajcarka. Egzotyki eocenu i oligocenu strefy krynickiej nie wykazują bezpośredniego związku z pienińskim pasem skałkowym, a skały krystaliczne pochodzą z erozji terranu kontynentalnego. Pochodzenie egzotyków może być związane z eoceńską ekshumacją podłoża basenu magurskiego lub z domeną wewnętrznokarpacką (wewnętrzne Dacydy i/lub terran Cisy (Tisza))
Sedimentary beds containing exotic pebbles occur in the Krynica Subunit. They occur mainly in deposits of the Szczawnica, Zarzecze and Magura fms. Pelagic limestones (Tithonian- -Neocomian) and lithothamnium limestones (Palaeogene) were recognized among sedimentary rocks of the Krynica Zone. Volcanites, rarely granitoides as well as schists, gneisses, quartzites and cataclasites were found in the group of crystalline exotic pebbles. The exotic pebbles from the Eocene--Oligocene beds of the Krynica Zone differ from those found in the Jarmuta Fm (Maastrichtian--Palaeocene) of the Grajcarek Unit. The exotic pebbles of the Krynica Subunit do not have direct connection with the Pieniny Klippen Belt, whereas crystalline rocks derived from a continental terrain. The provenance of these rocks could be connected with Eocene exhumation of the Magura Basin basement or with the Inner Carpathian realm (Inner Dacides and/or Tisza terrain)

New records of extremely rare late Turonian belemnites are described from the Úpohlavy working quarry in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. These specimens are referred to Praeactinocamax bohemicus (Stolley, 1916). An alveolar fragment possibly represents Praeactinocamax strehlensis (Fritsch, 1872) and would be the third find of this species ever recorded. All finds derive from a thin horizon in the uppermost part of the Hudcov limestone (Teplice Formation, uppermost Subprionocyclus neptuni Ammonite Zone). The small faunule most likely had its origin in a taxon from the Praeactinocamax manitobensis/walkeri/sternbergi group of the North American Province, and its occurrence in Europe can be seen in the context of a southward shift of Boreal taxa in the course of a late Turonian cooling event.

Twelve time interval maps have been presented which depict the plate tectonic configuration, paleogeography and lithofacies for the circum-arpathian area from the Late Carboniferous through Neogene and for the circum-Ouachita region from Late Cambrian through Early Permian. The following geodynamic evolutionary stages can be distinguished in these two orogens: Stage I - rifting of terranes off the major continent, forming oceanic basins (Triassic-Early Cretaceous in the Carpathian region, Cambrian-Devonian in the Ouachita region); Stage II - formation of subduction zones along the active margin, partial closing of oceanic basin, development of deep-water flysch basin associate with this rifting on the platform (passive margin) with the attenuated continental crust (Late Cretaceous-Paleocene in the Carpathian region, Early Carboniferous in the Ouachitas); Stage III - collision, perhaps terrane-continent, with the accompanying conver- gence of two large continents, development of accretionary prisms, Eocene-Early Miocene time in the Carpathian region, Late Carboniferous in the Ouachitas; and Stage IV - postcollisional, (Miocene-Present-future? in the Carpathians, Permian-Triassic in the Ouachitas). Both, Carpathians and Ouachitas are accretionary prisms formed in response to terrane-continent and continent-continent collision. The paleogeographic approach we have taken shows how these mountain belts were constructed through the orogenic cycle, which reflects complex plate tectonic processes. Carpathians and Ouachitas record complete and homologous Wilson cycle.

During the late Oligocene to early Miocene the residual Magura Basin was located along the front of the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB). This basin was supplied with clastic material derived from a south-eastern direction. In the Małe (Little) Pieniny Mts. in Poland, the late Oligocene/early Miocene Kremna Fm. of the Magura Nappe (Krynica subunit) occurs both in front of the PKB as well as in the tectonic windows within the PKB. Lenses of exotic conglomerates in the Kremna Fm. contain frequent clasts of Mesozoic limestones (e.g. limestones with “filaments” microfacies and Urgonian limestones) and Eocene shallow-water limestones. Fragments of crystalline and volcanic rocks occur subordinately. The provenance of these exotic rocks could be probably connected with Eocene exhumation and erosion of the SE part of the Dacia and Tisza Mega-Units.
