Opis:
Oxygen is an element that is first purposely brought into the steel melt to remove some unwanted elements or to reduce their concentration (oxidation). In the made cast steel there is on the contrary necessary to reduce the oxygen content with the use of deoxidation to such a level in order to avoid a reaction with carbon with the formation of CO bubbles. Concentration of oxygen in steel before casting is given, in particular, by the manner of metallurgical processing and the used deoxidation process. Oxygen is found in molten steels both as chemically bound in the form of oxides and in the form of oxygen dissolved in the solution – the melt. Chemical composition of the melt strongly influences the activity of oxygen dissolved in the melt and further on the composition of oxidic inclusions forming in the melt during the reaction with oxygen. In the Fe-C-Cr-Ni based alloys in the reaction with oxygen greatly participates also chrome, whose products are often in solid state and they are the cause of forming such defects as e.g. oxidic films.

Opis:
Graphite nitrogen, pyridine nitrogen and pyrrole nitrogen are the main nitrogen types in nitrogen-doped graphene materials. In order to investigate the mechanism of the oxygen reduction activity of nitrogen-doped graphene, several models of nitrogen-doped graphene with different nitrogen contents and different nitrogen types are developed. The nitrogen content is varied from 1.3 at% to 7.8 at%, and the adsorption energy is calculated according to the established models, then the band gaps are analyzed through the optimization results, so as to compare the mag-nitude of the conductivity. Finally, the oxygen reduction activity of graphite nitrogen-doped graphene (GNG) is found to be better than pyridine nitrogen-doped graphene (PDNG) and pyrrole nitrogen-doped graphene (PLNG) when the nitrogen content is lower than 2.6 at%, and the oxygen reduction activity of PDNG is the best when the nitrogen content was higher than 2.6 at%.

Opis:
Deoxidation of steel with carbon under reduced pressure is often used for increasing the steel purity. Suitable units for this purpose in foundries are vacuum induction furnaces. Possibilities of increasing the steel purity by deoxidation with carbon in the vacuum induction furnace were studied for the steel for the petrochemistry of specific composition 25Cr/35Ni. The charge composed of the return material only was melted in the air. During melting the charge oxidized and the oxidizing slag formed. Chemical composition of steel, morphology, chemical composition of inclusions in the steel and chemical composition of slag after vacuuming were studied on the basis of samples taken before and after vacuuming. Temperature and oxygen activity were measured before and after vacuuming. Globular inclusions with dominant content of silicon and manganese were observed in steel before and after vacuuming. Contents of total oxygen in steel didn’t change significantly during vacuuming. On the basis of composition of inclusions and measured oxygen activity the activity of Cr2O3 in inclusions was calculated. A slag sample was taken after vacuuming and equilibrium oxygen activity in steel with regard to the Cr2O3 content in the slag was estimated from the slag composition. Equilibrium oxygen activity in relation to the Cr2O3 content in the slag was higher than equilibrium activity measured in the steel. For this reason it is not possible, under the studied conditions, to decrease oxygen content in steel during vacuuming.

The contribution summarises the results of oxygen activity determinations, which were measured and registered continuously in castings from cast irons with various types of graphite. The results were used to find the relationship between two variables: natural logarithm of oxygen activities and reverse value of thermodynamic temperature 1 /T. Obtained regression lines were used to calculate oxygen activity at different temperatures, to calculate Gibbs free energy \deltaG at the different temperatures and to calculate the single \deltaG value for significant temperature of the graphite solidification. The results were processed by a statistical analysis of data files for the different types of graphite with flake, vermicular and spheroidal graphite. Each material has its proper typical oxygen activities range and individual temperature function of Gibbs free energy for analysing and governing casting quality.

Opis:
The present study provides a comprehensive data on the antioxidant, antimicrobial and neutrophil-modulating activities of extracts from six medicinal plants - blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) leaves, chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) leaves, hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) leaves, lady's mantle (Alchemilla glabra) aerial parts, meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) aerial parts and raspberry (Rubus idaeus) leaves. In order to analyze the antioxidant activity of the herbs, several methods (ORAC, TRAP, HORAC and inhibition of lipid peroxidation) were used. Blackberry leaves and meadowsweet extracts revealed the highest antioxidant activities via all methods. All extracts studied blocked almost completely the opsonized zymosan particle-activated ROS production by neutrophils from human whole blood. On the other hand, the effect of extracts on phorbol myristate acetate-activated ROS production was much milder and even nonsignificant in the case of chokeberry leaves. This latter result suggests that extracts (apart from their antioxidative activity) interfere with the signaling cascade of phagocyte activation upstream of the protein kinase C activation. The antimicrobial activity of the investigated extracts against 11 human pathogens was investigated using three different methods. Meadowsweet and blackberry leaves extracts had the highest antimicrobial effect and the lowest minimal inhibiting concentrations (MICs) against the microorganisms tested.

Opis:
Oxygen (aerobic) efficiency is one of the most important determinants of our physical ability, which in turn is the most significant aspect of the human body. Physical activity is very often connected with health and life long health care. The purpose of this article is to show how aerobic efficiency is affected by different lifestyles and predilections among groups selected by the researcher. This will enable the determination of those factors that influence oxygen efficiency. Purpose. The purpose of this research is to establish how aerobic efficiency, being the most important determinant of physical activity, presents in the chosen groups of respondents and how it is affected by various factors. Materials and methods. 30 respondents between the ages of 18 and 24 who study or work took part in the research. All of them claimed to pursue regular physical activity. Based on the interview with the respondents several subgroups were indicated: males, females, smokers, non-smokers, consumers of alcohol and non-drinkers.Results. Research conducted for the purpose of this manuscript enabled the evaluation of how oxygen efficiency presented in the different groups selected for the purpose of this study. Respondents who took part in the research varied based on gender and use of stimulants: Cigarettes reduce the Fitness Index (FI) rate. Males have a better FI rate than females. Alcohol does not reduce the FI rate. Those who smoke cigarettes have a lower oxygen efficiency rate then those drinking alcohol.

Opis:
Określono podstawowy skład chemiczny żeliwa, postać grafitu, a w wybranych przypadkach całkowitą zawartość gazów (O, N, H) oraz wytrzymałość i wydłużenie. Stwierdzono wpływ aktywności tlenu na morfologię grafitu i po spełnieniu określonych warunków techniczno-organizacyjnych, użyteczność tej metody do kontroli i sterowania procesem wytwarzania żeliwa sferoidalnego.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate a method for the measurement of oxygen activity in liquid cast iron to predict the cast iron properties after solidification. A series of experimental melts were made, testing the activity of oxygen after melting down of the charge, treatment with varying amounts of magnesium alloys, and during prolonged holding of the melt in a crucible furnace. The basic chemical composition of cast iron, the graphite form, and in some cases, the total gas content (O, N, H) as well as the strength and elongation were determined. The influence of oxygen activity on the morphology of graphite was stated and, provided certain technical and organisational conditions are met, the usefulness of this method in control of the ductile iron manufacturing process was confirmed.
