Ethics is intended to help make decisions. It does this by pointing to theories that provide an argument for the recommended procedure. One can ask whether the maxim of „do unto others as you would have done unto you” refers to any act or is a hypernorm providing guidelines for other decisions. The practice of individual behavior is institutionally nested, as is the status of the norm „do not impose upon the others what is unpleasant to you”, and in addition – with reciprocity, ergo primum non nocere.

Opis:
The present paper focuses on friendship’s role in life and poetry of Klemens Janicki (1516–1543). Unfortunately there is a noticeable lack of sources and testimonies. The analysis of poetical works written by Janicki is only partially useful. In the epoch of the Renaissance very often the statements on friendship were exaggerated. Despite of these circumstances it is possible to analyze the poetical techniques used in texts about friends and friendship. The paper ends with an attempt to describe the nature of Ianicius’ relationships with his friends.

Others – the creations of Polish female emigrants The article Others – the creations of Polish female emigrants in Danuta Mostwin’s novels concerns the identity of Polish female immigrants in Danuta Mostwin’s novels. The article aims to present the functioning of the Others category in Mostwin’s novels, describing the experience of Polish female immigrants in the United States. The visibility of strangeness or exclusion, influencing the construction of the identity of emigrant women, has been noticed in the novels: Nie ma domu, Dom starej lady, Ameryko!Ameryko!, Odchodzą moi synowie, Ja za wodą, ty za wodą and collections of stories: Asteroidy i Ptaki. The category of the Others is related to the following phenomena: broadly defined otherness towards autochthons and oneself, and the possibility of building an identity based on a constructive combination of Polish values and those present in the culture of the country of immigration.

According to article 430 of the Polish Civil Code anyone who, on his own account, entrusts an act to a person who, while performing the act, is under his manage- ment and is obliged to follow his instructions is liable for any damage caused due to a fault on that person’s part when performing the act. It means that the supervisor is liable only when a person who caused the damage, caused it “when performing the act” but is not liable if the damage was caused only “on the occasion of performance of the act”. The goal of this article is to analyze where is the borderline between the term “when performing” and “on the occasion of performing”. After a study of opinions presented by courts and theory of Polish civil law, in article was posed that the damage is caused “when performing the act” only if a delinquent acts in the aim of performing his duties or to protect the interests of supervisor and not if the performing of the duties merely creates to him a possibility of causing damage

We współczesnych społeczeństwach coraz rzadziej mamy do czynienia z rodzinami wielopokoleniowymi, standardem zaś są rodziny nuklearne, a zatem wąskie systemy obejmujące podsystem rodzicielski i dziecięcy. Gdy w takiej strukturze dochodzi do zakłóceń, kryzysów są to sytuacje sprzyjające mechanizmowi odwracania ról (parentyfikacji). Polega on na czerpaniu przez system z dostępnych mu zasobów, a więc przenoszeniu odpowiedzialności i zadań przynależnych dorosłym na dzieci. Przedmiotem niniejszego opracowania jest szersze postrzeganie rodziny, uwzględniające jej otoczenie, a więc dziadków. Na podstawie narracji autobiograficznych ludzi, którzy doświadczyli parentyfikacji w dzieciństwie, dokonano rekonstrukcji i analizy ich roli jako osób znaczących dla wnuków. Dziadkowie wspierali swoich wnuków, pełnili funkcję strażników rodziny, zapewniali poczucie bezpieczeństwa, wyposażając osoby parentyfikowane w pozytywne doświadczenia i wspomnienia związane z dzieciństwem.
In modern societies, extended families are less frequent, while nuclear families are the norm, which is why narrow systems include parent-and-child subsystems. When disturbances and crises arise in such a structure, these situations are conducive to the mechanism of role reversal (parentification). It involves the system’s drawing from the resources available to it and thus transferring to children the responsibility and tasks that belong to adults. The subject of this study is a broader perception of the family taking into account its surroundings, especially grandparents. Based on the autobiographical narratives of individuals who experienced parentification in childhood, the reconstruction and analysis of their role as people of significance to their grandchildren was made. Grandparents supported their grandchildren, acted as guardians of the family, and ensured a sense of security, endowing parentified individuals with positive experiences and childhood memories.

The analysis of the concepts “ours” and “alien” takes place within the framework of the study of the actual imagology. Contemporary British English poetry expresses the ideas through the following concepts: the struggle of the Irish for their independence, the need for empathy and assistance to emigrants, the need to respect and study not only English but also foreign poets, the idea of the presence of highly artistic poetry as a criterion for assessing the spiritual and cultural level of the country as a whole, the idea of the need to travel around the world to learn about their national identity and for spiritual and cultural enrichment, the idea of mixing languages, cultures, religions during the immigration of eastern nations to multicultural Great Britain, the idea of the beauty of the native language and others.

The purpose of the article is the analysis of a linguistic level of one of the most recent films by Władysław Pasikowski – Pokłosie [Aftermath] (2012) through the prism US/THE OTHERS. Its linguistic manifestations harmonize with other elements an audiovisual work is made of. As a leitmotif functioning on a dialogue level, they intensify the picture of a divided community of the village shown in the film. The analysis of the quotes from Pokłosie revealed that the category US/THE OTHERS creatively used in a work of art does not have to be based on a simple contrast or unconditional black and white combination; it may be a system of variable shades and nuances. The use of the opposition US/THE OTHERS by the screenwriter in a different way – from the form of verbal aggression through a rhetorical trick to the assumptions about conceptualization of the world – underlines the aesthetic effect of shock and provocation typical of all Pasikowski’s films.

The folk culture from the turn of the 20th century was founded on the mythical paradigm. Its specific feature was an opposition between the self and the other. It had ambivalent influence on those people and places which, due to actual or perceptual reasons, were placed on the margin of the mainstream of life. This includes, among others, the elders. On the one hand, they were treated by the community with reluctance, or even aggression, because of their decrepitude. On the other hand, they were respected as guards of traditions, and intermediaries with the supernatural, who possessed a portion of its potential.

The article deals with the issue of mirroring stereotypes through language which is presented in this material as an important tool of reflecting opinions, beliefs and judgements about ethnic others. The paper discusses different linguistic means which help to express cultural stereotypes commonly held in societies. On the basis of the opinions, comments and observations of different scholars, the author of the article distinguishes items which are essential for linguistic reproduction of cultural (mental) stereotypes. In his account he demonstrates how closely stereotypes are linked with the linguistic signs in use. Although the paper examines the notion of stereotyping from a linguistic perspective, it also refers to the assumptions of the cognitive and cultural approaches to stereotyping.

W artykule podjęta została kwestia wspólnotowego wymiaru aktywizmu społecznego oraz znaczenia, jakie aktywiści społeczni nadają innym ludziom. Na podstawie wywiadów narracyjnych autorka wyróżnia trzy aspekty wymiaru wspólnotowego: „bycie z”, „bycie przeciwko” i „bycie dla” innych (ludzi). Przeprowadzone badania i analizy są poszerzeniem wiedzy o polskim aktywizmie społecznym.
The issue of the community dimension of activism and the meaning that activists give to other people are raised in this paper. The authoress distinguishes three aspects of the community dimension of activism: “being with (others)”, “being against (others)” and “being for (others)” that have emerged from the analysis of narrative interviews. The results of the research as well as the analyses are an extension of knowledge in the field of Polish social activism.

Since Poland joined the EU in 2004, intercultural education has become one of the fundamental goals of the Polish educational system. Many Polish educators believed that it was only through intercultural education that they would be able to teach students necessary skills which would support them in the transition to becoming truly multicultural and cosmopolitan. In other words, intercultural education was perceived as a must for post-socialist CEE countries in order to catch up with Western Europe. Our argument is that intercultural education has been created, developed and implemented in the specific context of Western, multicultural societies. However, our sstandpoint is far from negating its importance and role in education in the 21st century. On the basis of a critical reflection on the Eurocentric approach within educational studies, the problem is outlined of teaching intercultural education “by dry run” in the context of Polish schools – i.e. teaching about global dependencies without a direct link with or presence of cultural “Others”, who are usually known only through the media and literary canon. It is indicated that this form of education often fails to serve its goal as it is frequently implemented in a one-sided way: by Polish educators, in monocultural schools, as narrations about Others rather than their presentations through the lens of their experiences, stories or methodologies and so considering the voices from outside thecontext of Central and Eastern European countries.

Od wydania Tajnego dziennika mija właśnie dziesięć lat, a proza Mirona Białoszewskiego wciąż domaga się odkrywania w niej coraz to nowych wątków, potwierdzając tym samym jej aktualność w XXI wieku również w kontekście antropocenu. Celem mojego artykułu zatytułowanego Uważny Miron. Wątki ekokrytyczne w prozie Mirona Białoszewskiego będzie analiza i interpretacja występujących w twórczości autora Pamiętnika z powstania warszawskiego motywów ekokrytycznych, oscylujących wokół relacji autora-narratora z nie‑ludzkimi innymi. Przedmiotem moich badań uczynię dwa ważne tomy prozatorskie napisane przez Białoszewskiego w połowie lat 70. XX wieku: Konstancin oraz Chamowo, stosunkowo mało zbadane w kontekście posthumanizmu czy kategorii uważności. W referacie przedstawię stosunek autora Zawału do zwierząt, roślin oraz śmieci, który częściowo omówiła w swoich pracach Agnieszka Karpowicz. Ponadto udowodnię, iż każdy z wymienionych wątków świetnie wpisuje w aktualny dyskurs o relacji człowiek-zwierzę, natura-kultura.
Ten years have just passed since the publication of Tajny dziennik and Miron Białoszewski’s prose continues to demand the discovery of new threads in it; also, in the context of the Anthropocene. The aim of my article will be to analyze and interpret the ecocritical motifs present in the works of the author of Pamiętnik z powstania warszawskiego, which oscillate around the relation between the author-narrator and non-human others. The subject of my research will be two important prose volumes written by Białoszewski in the mid-1970s: Konstancin and Chamowo, which have been relatively little studied in the context of posthumanism or the category of attentiveness. In this article I will present the attitude of the author to animals, plants, and garbage, which has been partially discussed by Agnieszka Karpowicz in her works. Moreover, I will prove that each of the aforementioned motifs perfectly fits into the current discourse on human-animal, nature-culture relations.

Despite the fact that salutary effects of forgiveness are well-established, there is a scarcity of research examining the role of different aspects of forgiveness for the quality of life in stressful situations such as illness. The current research has two major goals: 1) to compare aspects of forgiveness between cancer patients and healthy controls and 2) to examine aspects of forgiveness as potential predictors of health-related quality of life in cancer patients. 59 cancer patients and 59 healthy controls took part in the study. Forgiveness Scale and SF-36v2 were used to measure the variables of interest. The results showed that cancer patients have a lower level of self-forgiveness than controls. Furthermore, in cancer patients self-forgiveness and feeling forgiven by God proved to be significant predictors of the mental component of health-related quality of life. In the discussion section, the need for inclusion forgiveness topics into cancer care was highlighted, and some specific proposals and suggestions concerning methods to enhance self-forgiveness in cancer patients were made.
