Opis:
A series of new synthetic carbonaceous adsorbents has been prepared via physical and chemical activation of residue of alcoholic fermentation of corn starch. Two different variants of thermal treatment procedure - microwave and conventional heating have been applied for preparing of the activated biocarbons. All the samples under investigation were characterised by elementary analysis, surface area measurements as well as determination of the number of surface functional groups. The electrokinetic properties of examined materials were studied using potentiometric titration and electrophoresis methods, which enabled determination of the surface charge density and zeta potential of activated biocarbon particles. Moreover, sorption properties of the carbonaceous materials towards two organic dyes - methylene blue and malachite green were tested. The final products were activated biocarbons of medium developed surface area ranging from 21 to 879 m2/g, showing acidic character of the surface and various content of surface functional groups. More favourable textural parameters as well as sorption properties toward both organic dyes were revealed by chemically activated samples. The obtained results indicated also considerable effect of adsorbed dye molecules on the structure of electrical double layer formed at the solid/liquid interface.

Opis:
The adsorption of methyl orange dye on activated carbon and bentonite type Algerian clay from aqueous solutions was investigated. The bentonite has been acid-activated, whereas the activated carbon was used without pretreatment. The influence of several parameters (kinetics, contact time, sorbent amount, adsorbate concentration and pH) on the adsorption capacity was evaluated and discussed. The methyl orange dye adsorption equilibrium of active carbon is lower than that of bentonite (3 h/1 h), whereas adsorption yield with active carbon is better than that of bentonite. The adsorption capacity of bentonite is lower than that of active carbon. The methyl orange dye adsorption increases with its concentration in the aqueous solutions. The Frendlich and Langmuir models provided the best fit to the experimental data with high correlation coefficient only for active carbon. The kinetic study demonstrated that methyl orange dye adsorption on bentonite was in a good accordance with the pseudo-second- order kinetic model. The results showed that bentonite-type clay gave acceptable results compared with activated carbon and is potential to be used as an economical adsorbent for the removal of methyl orange dye.

Radiation processing has been considered as a promising process for the treatment of textile industry waste effluents. In this study, the possibility of using gamma-rays to degrade and decolorize Apollofix dyes in water has been investigated. Two different Apollofix dyes, Apollofix Red (AR) and Apollofix Yellow (AY) in aqueous solutions were irradiated in air with doses from 1.0 kGy to 8.0 kGy at a 0.14 kGy/h of dose rate. The change in absorption spectra, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and the degree of decoloration (percent reduction in optical density) were examined in the presence and absence of H2O2. The absorption bands at 534 nm and 420 nm for AR and AY were observed to decrease rapidly with increasing irradiation dose. The degree of decoloration of each dye solution with irradiation dose was estimated as 100 percent for the lower concentration (50 ppm) dye solutions. The complete decoloration was observed after 2.0 kGy and 1.0 kGy doses for AR and AY dyes. The COD and BOD reduction and the change of pH for all dye solutions on irradiation showed similar behavior.

Opis:
Natural organic dyes are group of substances that belong to various types of chemical compounds. The most commonly used in paintings and dyeing textiles were naturally occurring dyestuffs from group of anthraquinones, flavones and indigoid dyes. Identification of coloring substances present in historical artistic paints provides relevant information for a wide range of specialists dealing with works of art and in the field of conservation science. This research presents a review of analytical techniques (mainly chromatographic and spectroscopic) used for identification of dyes. It also describes the methods of colorants isolation from historical artistic paints and textiles. Furthermore, the article presents a brief characteristics of fragmentation reactions of selected groups of dyestuffs, which is useful in their identification.

Opis:
The removal of azo dye Acid Red 18 in hybrid photocatalysis/membrane processes systems was investigated. The photocatalytic reactions were conducted in the reactor with photocatalyst suspended in the solution. The reaction solution was recirculated through the ultrafiltration system. A commercially available titanium dioxide (AeroxideŽ P25, Degussa, Germany) was used as a photocatalyst. The solution after the photocatalytic/UF reaction was applied as the feed for the membrane distillation process. The changes of various parameters, including the concentration of the dye, pH and the conductivity of the solution, TOC and TDS content were analyzed during the process. It was found that azo dye Acid Red 18 could be successfully decolourised in the hybrid photocatalysis/UF system. The catalyst particles were retained in the feed solution by means of the ultrafiltration membrane so the obtained permeate was free of TiO2. The application of ultrafiltration together with the photocatalytic process results in the separation of photocatalyst from the treated solution but does not give the complete removal of organic matter from the reaction mixture. Membrane distillation applied with the permeate after the photocatalysis/UF process as a feed gives a complete separation of TOC from the treated solution and the obtained product is practically pure water.

The paper presents the results of studies on the possibility of using magnetic nanoparticles modified with selected hydrophobic surfactants for model post-production water purification. Colloidal solutions of iron hydroxide (III) and iron oxide (II and III) were obtained and their particles were subjected to surface modification using surfactants. Thus obtained magnetic fluids were used as active agents in the process of removing selected organic dyes from their aqueous solutions. The effectiveness of the modified compounds was analysed using spectrophotometric methods. It has been shown that the effectiveness of the process depends on the type of surfactant used to modify selected magnetic nanoparticles.

Opis:
The aim of the presented work was the removal of organic dye, Acid Red 18, from water using a novel reactor with the photoactive refill. Titanium dioxide was immobilized on the base material as a thin layer from the alcoholic suspension followed by thermal stabilization. The prepared coating exhibits high stability in repeated cycles of water treatment. The complete removal of colour was achieved in a relatively short time of 14 hours. The proposed reactor with the photoactive refill solves the problem of the necessity of the replacement of the reactor or parts of the reactor when the photocatalysts activity decreases. In the case of activity drop of the photocatalyst, only the photoactivve refill can be easily replaced.
