Opis:
Accumulation of low-grade iron ore tailings (IOTs) generated during the processing of high-grade iron ore has become a great threat to environment. Although wide range of research works has carried out to recover the iron values from the IOTs, but the solid recovery value has limited to ca. 50% in Indian context. In order to attain a maximum iron recovery and to utilize these solid wastes for future needs, an attention has shed on the topics of hydrometallurgy and applied nanomaterial synthesis from IOTs. Iron containing nanoparticles (ICNs) have huge potential in environmental and energy related applications. A wide range of synthesis methods has developed to produce ICNs from the mine waste. It is evident from the recent research works that converting waste materials into value added products are gaining more attentions. Objective of this review is to analyse the green synthesis routes to prepare ICNs from mine waste, starting from the physio chemical identification of waste material followed by discussion on various methods of ICNs synthesis routes from mine waste. It includes selective leaching method. Finally, the use of ICNs for environmental application had discussed in brief.

Opis:
The effect of organic fertilization and microbiological preparations for phytostabilization of copper ore tailings were examined. It has been shown that the introduction of the pulp, waste from the sugar industry, leads to the mobilization of trace metals. The copper content in aqueous extract of enriched waste was greater than 500-fold higher than in controls. It has also been stated an increase in the toxicity of extracts. While the use of biopreparations for seed treatment contributed to the stimulation of nutrients uptake by plants. In the biomass of plants from treated seeds with a suspension of Azotobacter strain EK, and biosurfactant was found more phosphorus and calcium than in plants from control.

Opis:
The paper justifies the waterproofing technology for waste storage conservation. The paper presents the results of full-scale monitoring of the quality of surface and groundwater affected by the tailings of the Gaisky Mining and Processing Plant. The determined chemical composition of enrichment waste is described. The existing methods of waste storage waterproofing are reviewed. The studied residuals of copper ore enrichment can be insulated with a mixture of processed secondary polyethylene and polypropylene pellets. The physical and mechanical properties of recycled polymers are investigated. The proposed technology of covering with a waterproofing coating can be applied to preserve technogenic deposits aiming at their future secondary extraction, as well as to ensure the environmental safety of newly designed facilities. The implementation of this technique will improve the regional environmental situation and reduce the migration of potentially hazardous substances as a result of seepage, thus reducing the pollution of natural waters.

Charakterystyczne właściwości fizykochemiczne osadów flotacyjnych deponowanych na składowisku odpadów „Żelazny Most” oraz niekorzystne warunki atmosferyczne przyczyniają się do dokuczliwego zanieczyszczenia środowiska wywiewanymi pyłami, zagrażającymi zdrowiu ludzi. Przedstawiono charakterystykę osadnika i właściwości gromadzonych w nim odpadów oraz problematykę pylenia i zabezpieczenia przed erozją wietrzną osadów drobnoziarnistych. Jako materiał doświadczalny zaprezentowano wyniki badań wytrzymałości mechanicznej warstwy bitumicznej zabezpieczającej przed pyleniem odpadów flotacyjnych na plażach składowiska.
Physicochemical characteristics of flotation waste, deposited on the “Żelazny Most” tailings pond, as well as adverse weather conditions, result in troubling dust and environmental pollution which affect human health. Characteristics of tailing pond and properties of its waste were presented, as well as the problem of dusting and prevention of fine dust wind erosion. As experimental material, the results of mechanical durability examination of bitumen layer which prevents dusting of flotation waste on pond beach were presented.

Opis:
The article presents the results of thermodynamic and experimental research on the processing of cinders from the firing of Shalkiya deposit lead-zinc ore tailings with the production of siliceous ferroalloys. Thermodynamic modeling carried out using the HSC-6.0 complex based on the Gibbs energy minimization principle showed that the interaction occur with the formation of CaSiO3, FeSiO3, MgSiO3, K2OˑSiO2, FeSi, Fe5Si3, SiC, Fe3Si, Si, SiOg, FeSi2.33, FeSi2, CaSi, Zn, Zng, Pb, Pbg; an increase in the iron amount in the system allows increasing the silicon extraction degree into the alloy at 1800°C to 76%, to reduce the silicon concentration in the alloy from 41 to 24%; FS25 grade ferrosilicon formed at 1752-1867°C in the presence of 88-100% iron, and FS45 grade ferrosilicon – at 1863-1900°C and 20-22.4% iron. Electric melting of a charge containing 63.83% calcined cinder of tailings, 19.15% coke, and 17.02% steel chips allows to obtain FS45 grade ferrosilicon (44.1-43.9% Si) with the extraction of 69.7% silicon and sublimates with the content of 32-38% zinc and lead. The results obtained allow complex processing of lead-zinc sulfide ore tailings with the extraction of not only non-ferrous metals, but also silicon in the ferroalloy.

Demand for raw materials is increasing exponentially. To satisfy that demand, more minerals need to be mined from the Earth's crust. As a result, minerals are being exhausted, and ore grades decline. Lower ore grade mines also mean more energy, which in turn entails fossil fuel emissions and more climate change. This paper estimates the specific energy for the beneficiation process of metals lead and zinc as case studies. The evaluation is performed with specialized software, HSC Chemistry which assesses the specific energy for every stage: comminution, flotation, and refining. Different scenarios have been established to simulate the behavior of a mine when it approaches depletion. Preliminary results show that energy consumption for lead would increase by five times when compared to the current situation if ore grades decrease until the level of tailings, while for zinc by almost two.

Purpose This study aims to identify the potential sources of radon exhalation and its measurement in underground uranium mines to control the radiation levels within safe limits and protect miners from radiation hazards. Methods An extensive literature review on radon exhalation in underground uranium mines from various sources such as uranium ore, backfill tailings and mine water has been carried out. The influence of different important factors, viz. ore grade, porosity, grain size and moisture content on radon exhalation has been discussed in depth. Different methods for the measurement of radon exhalation from various sources in mines have also been presented in this paper. Results The review of literature revealed that the radon exhalation rate in porous uranium bearing rocks is less affected by the ore grade than in non-porous rocks. The exhalation of radon from backfill tailings is quantitatively more significant than from the uranium ore itself due to higher bulk porosity and enhanced surface area. Thus, porosity is the dominant factor that affects the rate of radon exhalation from rock surfaces into mine openings. Practical implications The knowledge of the sources of radon and quantitative estimation of radon from various sources will be very much useful in the planning and designing of ventilation systems in underground uranium mines. The accurate measurement of radon exhalation in underground uranium mines can be made by choosing the optimum size of accumulation chamber and a suitable radon build-up period in the chamber. Originality/ value The study portrays the important sources of radon and its measurement techniques in underground uranium mines based on an extensive literature review. The methods of measurement of radon exhalation from the ore body and backfill tailings in underground uranium mines, used by the authors of this paper, comparatively give more accurate results than previously used methods. Furthermore, the methods are more effective in terms of portability, cost and time for measuring the average radon exhalation across a large.
