Opis:
Analysis of online available references suggests that circular characteristics observed around Aegean Sea in southern Europe may represent protobasin class of impact craters, which small central peak and surrounded peak ring appear to be formed by the Cyclades. Thinner crust, upper mantle deformation (uplift), recognition of basin in upper mantle re-filled with rocks having lower density than surrounding mantle, central Aegean Sea area free of sediments and almost perfect circular anomaly of density with diameter over 500 km are only few arguments which may indicate its real origin. The strongest fact standing for hypothesis of impact is presence of deep, lithospheric fracture zones with both circular and radial character, detected up to the distance of ~516 km from common geometric point of all rings (providing estimated diameter of the largest circle over 1000 km). Existence of pseudotachylite veins and breccias in central Cyclades are contributory evidence. Mélange covered by Fe-Ni rich ores in Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, if related to impact, may give clue to explanation of localized in Europe Tithonian mass extinction event 145 Ma. However, pseudotachylites and breccias can be produced by endogenic processes (e.g., plate tectonics). A further research is required to find evidence of passage of shock wave through target rocks.

Landslide is a common geological disaster which causes huge losses to people’s properties and national economic development. How to prevent and control landslides has become an important issue. This article introduces the geological and geographical environment of the landslide body, analyzes the basic characteristics of the landslide, calculates the landslide stability based on the ultimate equilibrium theory-based transfer coefficient method, discusses the development trend of the landslide and comes up with corresponding control schemes by taking the landslide body of Black Bovine Cave Copper Ore Mining & Beneficiation Project as example. It is found that the control scheme - “anti-slide pile + retraining wall + baffle + anchor cable” can be used to effectively prevent and control the geological disaster according to calculation. The study results can provide a reference for landslide body control.

Opis:
The abandoned Klecza–Radomice gold mining area in the Kaczawskie Mountains is prospective for new occurrences of vein-type gold deposits. Research of sulphide ore samples from old mining wastes confirmed a rich gold abundance in this area. Chemical bulk-rock analyses proved a high content of gold (up to 60 ppm Au) and a common occurrence of microscopic gold (mainly electrum). The application of geophysical VLF surveys showed a number of linear anomalies indicating the possibility of the emergence of new ore veins between the areas of former mining exploitation. This area is very promising for gold prospecting and should be the subject of further geophysical research using the induced polarization method (IP), and verified by shallow prospecting drillings. Execution of this type of comprehensive exploration and research work would open a completely new stage of prospecting for primary gold deposits in the Sudetes.

Opis:
The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

Opis:
Ore concentrators seek the stability of processes by feeding blends of rocks with average hardness and ore content. Therefore, large amounts of samples must be characterized in a short time. The Bond Work Index () is a common technique for the estimation of hardness and energy requirement for comminution using ball mills. However, this technique is time-consuming (close to 5 hours) and liable to experimental errors. This work contributes to obtaining new models for rapid Bond Work Index estimation using non-standard dimensions mills. This was done by proposing grinding tests using four types of ores and four mills of different dimensions, including the standard Bond ball mill (BBM). For all tests it was kept constant: (a) critical speed (91%), and (b) mill charge by volume (10.5%), varying the amount of fresh feed according to its density. The results showed that using the non-standard mills (between 20 and 35 cm in diameter), the Bond´s model constants (=0.23; = 0.82, and = 44.5), are unable to predict the Work Index properly. Therefore, these constants must be recalculated using linear models based on mill diameter. With the models proposed for , , and , the Bond Work Index (kWh/t) can be rapidly estimated (less than 2 hours) and show a high accuracy for mills of non-standard dimensions (R2= 0.96).

Opis:
This study was undertaken to improve gold and silver extraction from a pyritic gold flotation concentrate, which assayed 11 g/t Au, 42 g/t Ag, 0.21% Cu, 3.57% Zn, and 31% Fe. Direct cyanide leaching of the concentrate at 1.5 g/L NaCN yielded a low gold extraction (37%), confirming its refractory nature. Effects of lead nitrate (200-500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) and pre-aeration (24 h) before cyanide leaching at 1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN were investigated. Earlier studies have focused on the impact of these parameters on gold leaching. Besides gold, this study demonstrated the behaviour of silver and base metals (copper and zinc) from the pyritic gold concentrate. Adding lead nitrate had a negligible effect on gold extraction whilst improving silver extraction. Dissolution of copper was substantially suppressed by adding lead nitrate, i.e., from 23% (no Pb(NO3)2) to 4% (500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) over 24 h. Zinc dissolution was negligible (≤0.01%). Pre-aeration of the concentrate improved the gold and silver extractions by 4-14% and 23-44% at the subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN). However, it did not affect the leaching of copper. Only negligible leaching of zinc (≤0.6%) occurred during cyanide leaching. Pre-aeration also reduced cyanide consumption in subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5 g/L NaCN), i.e., from 2.83 kg/t to 2.03 kg/t NaCN per solids. These results suggested that lead nitrate can improve silver extraction while suppressing copper dissolution, which would be advantageous in the leaching-adsorption circuit (CIP), mitigating the dissolved copper-associated problems. Pre-aeration can also be suitable for improved gold/silver extractions and reduced reagent consumption.

Primary concentrations of Azara barite deposit in Nassarawa state, Nigeria were conducted; employing simplified gravity concentration techniques. Particle size distribution, specific gravity, physicochemical and morphological analyses of the sample was conducted. These analyses were done in order to establish process efficacy and effectiveness of gravity concentration processes for recovery of barium from the ore deposit, as well as its suitability in various industrial applications, such as the oil and gas sectors. Thus, microstructural, chemical composition and certain physicochemical characteristics/properties of the mineral sample of Azara-Nassarawa barite were determined. XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS analyses were utilized in determining morphology as well as quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of the sample. Barite sample with average particle size of -355+150μm was subjected to concentration, adopting jigging and tabling gravity separation as the concentration methods. Hitherto, based on quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses conducted, the sample was composed of about 36.2% BaO and 40.5% Ba, respectively; and also possessed an average specific gravity (SG) of about 3.85. Further, the qualitative analysis of the mineral products of jiggling and tabling indicated that jigging had a concentrate recovery of 130.98% Ba with SG increase of 11.2% while tabling had 89.81% Ba recovery with 8.6% SG increase. Assay and SG results confirm gravity concentration efficiency and thus, establish the barite from Azara-Nassarawa ore deposits suitable for certain industrial applications. This will serve as a tool and a step further towards mitigating existing problems or challenges in mineral concentration and processing of such deposits for industrial purposes.

Ecological and geochemical indicators have been widely accepted as tools with the potential for rapid risk assessment of metal contamination of bottom sediments. In this study we propose a selection of such indicators to characterize the potential ecological risks stemming from metal contamination of the bottom sediments of the Chechło reservoir (S Poland). The Chechło reservoir is located in an area formerly occupied by zinc and lead ore mining and processing industry. High amounts of metals, especially zinc (39.37–4772.00 mg/kg d.m.), cadmium (0.37–21.13 mg/kg d.m.) and lead (4.50–434.49 mg/kg d.m.) have been found in the bottom sediments. Both geochemical (CD – contamination degree) and ecological indices (mean PECQ) were indicative of bottom sediment contamination and their potential toxicity to living organisms. Most of the bottom sediment samples (71%) examined were toxic for Heterocypris incongruens, while only 9% of the samples were toxic to Sinapis alba. However, no significant correlations between the metal content and the response of the test organisms were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses (PCA) showed that silt and clay fractions were the key factors influencing the metal content in the sediments. Our study makes a contribution to building evidence of the need to integrate several indices for the assessment of environmental risks related to the presence of metals in bottom sediments rather than relying on a single one.

This article presents the results of a comparative study for the increase in the free finely dispersed gold recovery from the gold-bearing ore produced in a deposit in Kazakhstan. The following minerals were identified in the sample under X-ray phase analysis: chalcopyrite and pyrite, as well as in a finely disseminated state in silicate minerals. Gold in the ore is present mainly (40.09%) in the free form under the results of phase analysis. Flotation tests of ore beneficiation were performed in FML-1 and FML-3 flotation machines with chamber volumes of 1.0 and 3.0 liters. A flotation combined concentrate with a gold content of 15.3 g/t was obtained (concentrate yield 9.45%), with gold recovery into concentrate 82.79% in the optimal mode: the grind of 90% in the class -0.071 mm; consumption of reagents: C7 foaming agent – 30 and 60 g/t, sodium butyl xanthate – 60 and 120 g/t; the time of the main flotation – 10 minutes, the control flotation – 7 minutes, at pH = 9. Flotation tailings contained 0.33 g/t of gold. The recovery showed a fairly high 84.42% (yield of the total concentrate 20.93%) with the gold content of 7.1 g/t with the use of a sulfidizing agent (Na2S) and additional dispersion of the pulp at pH = 9.0. A gold-bearing concentrate was obtained containing 4.0 g/t Au at a fineness of -0.05 mm and 6.8 g/t Au at a fineness of +0.05 mm. The beneficiation of the pulp with a fineness of +0.05 mm gave the recovery into the final concentrate equal to 89.94%.

Opis:
This article discusses the impacts of overprinting of tectonic and plutonic events on the mineralization of the Duna Pb-Ba ore deposit, according to geologic settings and fluid inclusion studies. The Duna carbonate-hosted deposit contains a significant amount of Ag (18.9–264.3 ppm ), Cu (77–41600 ppm), Sb (32.7–11000 ppm), Sr (63.5–15100 ppm), and Fluid inclusions with 7.34–23.65 wt.% NaCl equivalent. The homogenization temperature of about 110–285°C, as well as the paragenesis of the minerals shows a difference compared with other Pb-Zn deposits such as the Irish-type and MVT. The ore mineralization in the Duna mine occurred as stratabound, open space-filling, and along the brecciated fault zones. The concordant (stratabound) type of mineralization, with salinity and homogenization temperature of 18.54 to 23.65 wt.% NaCl equivalent, and 113°C to 165°C respectively, is usually typical of MVT-ore deposits, which in this area evolved during the Early Cimmerian orogeny and was later interrupted by mineralization along younger brecciated fault zones with salinity and homogenization temperature of 7.34 to 23.65 wt.% NaCl equivalent, and 113°C to 285°C respectively. This discordant mineralization, which occurred along the faults, formed by the end of the Late Cretaceous and during the Cenozoic as a result of the intrusion of a plutonic mass, and is comparable to the Irish-type ore deposits.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the main causes of environmental threats resulting from mining activities, yet efficient characterization and prediction of AMD potential of wastes play an important role in preventing AMD. In this study, the chemical and mineralogical properties of fresh waste samples, collected from waste ponds of the Görgü (Malatya) zinc-lead ore processing plant, were determined and the results were used to explain its AMD potential. Alteration properties of the wastes in water was investigated by monitoring certain properties of the prepared suspension with respect time. Additionally, pyrite concentrate particles were added into the suspensions at certain proportions to evaluate its effect on the AMD generation and alteration. Analysis and test results showed that the raw waste was rich in carbonate and poor in pyritic sulfur, and hence did not have the AMD generation potential. The pH, electrical conductivity, and metal ions concentrations of the suspension medium were determined at regular intervals, and obtained data were found very beneficial to explain the time-dependent behavior of waste in water. After the depletion of liquid in the suspension, the remained solid residuals were chemically and mineralogically analyzed to compare with raw waste. It was concluded that sufficient aeration and stirring of suspension is required for noticeable alteration of the waste.

Bentonite is the traditionally used binder in iron ore pelletization. However, it consists of up to 85% silica and alumina which are undesired acidic gangue in iron-making. In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and cornstarch were used as acidic gangue-free organic alternatives to bentonite in synthesizing iron pellets. Iron ore, water and the corresponding binder were mixed and rolled in a pelletizing disk to form green pellets. The green pellets were dried and subsequently indurated in a furnace at 1200 ℃ to form indurated pellets. To evaluate the effectiveness of the organic binders, the pellets produced were tested on various pellet properties. Known industrial pellet property standards and the bentonite binder were used as references. Carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch produced green pellets with average drop numbers of 7.20 ± 0.84, 5.60 ± 0.89 and 6.00 ± 1.00 respectively, compared to bentonite’s 5.00 ± 0.71. Dry pellets of average compressive strength 5.93 ± 0.09, 5.86 ± 0.03 and 11.52 ± 0.18 kg/pellet were produced by carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch respectively while bentonite’s averaged 5.60 ± 0.08 kg/pellet. For indurated pellets, carboxymethyl cellulose (210.2 ± 1.88 kg/pellet) and sodium lignosulfonate (198.1 ± 2.49 kg/pellet) pellets were weaker than those of bentonite (250.4 ± 2.06 kg/pellet) but satisfied the industrial requirement of 181.4 kg/pellet. A boron oxide additive (0.1 wt. %) was used to boost the strength of carboxymethyl cellulose indurated pellets to 252.6 ± 1.32 kg/pellet, rendering them superior to those of bentonite.

The present research work studies the effect of rhamnolipid biosurfactant (RL) produced from Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria on the metallurgical response of a copper ore sample flotation through an extensive full factorial experimental design. Key influential factors including feed particle size, pulp solid content, pH, and dosages of collector, frother and RL biosurfactant were considered. The surface activity of the RL biosurfactant was also studied based on a D-optimal experimental design. Surface activity results revealed that increasing pH and electrolyte concentrations negatively impacted the RL surface activity, while the effect of electrolyte source was dependent on their ionic strength. Metallurgical investigations showed that operating parameters significantly influence the copper grade and recovery with considerable interaction among various parameters. RL biosurfactant was found to negatively decrease the copper grade (~0.5%) and positively enhance the recovery (~3%). Effect of RL was attributed to two potential mechanisms, i.e., being ineffective on copper minerals and/or interaction with gangue minerals, as well as increasing the rate of entrainment due to high foamability, both of which increased non-selective recovery of gangue minerals. Interestingly, regardless of the structural similarities, no interaction between the flotation reagents and rhamnolipid was observed. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis of copper minerals, both pure and RL-exposed, showed that there was actually no molecular interaction between RL molecules and particle surface.

Opis:
Chlorite-mica-quartz schist in the Gierczyn-Przecznica area in SW Poland contains polymetallic ores which were the source of tin and cobalt in the past. This mineralogical study revealed the presence of silver-bearing minerals including members of the tetrahedrite (Ag <3 apfu) and freibergite series (3 < Ag < 8 apfu), galena (0.26–1.48 wt.% Ag), and a phase with the chemical composition of Te-rich canfieldite Ag8Sn(S,Te)6. In Przecznica Sn-sulphides are represented by stannite while cobaltite is the most abundant host for cobalt, followed by Co-bearing arsenopyrite. Glaucodot, ullmannite and members of the löllingite-rammelsbergite solid-solution series (Fe,Ni,Co)As2 also contain cobalt but are scarce in the samples. An exposure in the “Psi Grzbiet” area is characterized by the presence of Ag, Ni, Sb and Te minerals accompanied by very small amounts of As-bearing phases (represented by arsenopyrite) while the mineralogical composition in the Przecznica area is characterized by an abundance of As phases and a lack of Sb minerals. Sulphur isotopes of sulphides from Przecznica are heavier than in most deposits related to the Karkonosze Granite intrusion, while their Pb isotope signature in galena suggests an Early Paleozoic pre-Variscan affinity rather than a Variscan one.

Opis:
The demand for feldspar as a raw material for various industrial applications continuously increases. Feldspar is a primary raw material in manufacturing ceramics, glass, fillers, welding electrodes, and enamel. Feldspar is often associated with iron oxide, which decreases its economic value and hinders its industrial application. The present work aimed at reducing iron oxide content in Egyptian feldspar ore from the Wadi Zerabi locality. Ball milling was used for preparing feldspar feed of size -250+45μm. Carpco dry high-intensity magnetic separation followed by acid leaching processes were carried out in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. A Box-Behnken statistical design was used to optimize the magnetic separation results. From a feldspar feed containing 1.40% Fe2O3, a non-magnetic concentrate of 0.25% Fe2O3 was obtained. The Fe2O3 removal reached up to 82% with a high yield as the % weight of non-magnetic feldspar reached up to 97.5%. The leaching process further reduced the iron oxide content down to 0.19 %. Also, the feldspar whiteness was improved from 65.17% in the original ore to 85.60% in the leached product.
