Opis:
This article presents an extensive feasibility study of the use of optical satellite data for flood risk monitoring. The article presents a review of existing and archival satellite systems. The capabilities and restrictions of using earth observation data are presented, in relation to the identified threat and taking into account the size, genesis and cause. The initial results of the studies demonstrate the potential of very high and highresolution satellite imagery for the operational detection of damage and risk areas. In the presented approach, two analyses were conducted: bare soil detection and water range detection, based on different radiometric indices. As a result of the conducted research, the best results in bare soil detection were obtained using the MSAVI and NDVI indices. The most effective at delimiting water was the NDVI index. The automatization of satellite data processing from different satellite systems gives opportunities for hydrological services and crisis management professionals to access accurate and up-to-date information about the condition of levees for the early detection of flood risk.

Opis:
Attenuation of light in the ocean ranges widely depending on the environment and is especially significant in optical remote sensing. Absorption of light by ocean water limits the range light can travel before being extinguished. The complex interactions of scattering light and ocean water often lead to distortions of the signal as it propagates which degrades the quality and accuracy of underwater measurements. Consequently, underwater visibility (i.e. how well an object can be seen with definition at distance) can be less than 1 [m] in turbid and murky environments such as harbors. Advancements in laser imaging systems make highly accurate measurements at further ranges than has previously been possible through temporally filtering of a modulated laser signal at frequencies as high as 1 [GHz]. Here we overview the processes affecting underwater light propagation and visibility, laser imaging systems, recent advancements in the field of underwater optical imaging, and the application of such systems.

Recently, hospitals have undergone major changes. Minimally invasive surgery is becoming more common, and numerous innovations are emerging, such as interventional radiology (IVR) and hybrid surgery. In order to keep pace with changes in this extremely dynamic field, scientist keep working on the development of imaging technology and the improvement of image display devices and new compounds acting as contrast agent (CA). In medicine, metals are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Inorganic elements are increasingly used as contrast agents in medical imaging due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this review, we would like to focus on the latest literature reports that contain information on Gd(III), W(IV), Mn(II), Eu(III) and 99mTc used in medical diagnostics.

Thermal-imaging systems respond to infrared radiation that is naturally emitted by objects. Various multispectral and hyperspectral devices are available for measuring radiation in discrete sub-bands and thus enable a detection of differences in a spectral emissivity or transmission. For example, such devices can be used to detect hazardous gases. However, their operation principle is based on the fact that radiation is considered a scalar property. Consequently, all the radiation vector properties, such as polarization, are neglected. Analysing radiation in terms of the polarization state and the spatial distribution of thereof across a scene can provide additional information regarding the imaged objects. Various methods can be used to extract polarimetric information from an observed scene. We briefly review architectures of polarimetric imagers used in different wavebands. First, the state-of-the-art polarimeters are presented, and, then, a classification of polarimetric-measurement devices is described in detail. Additionally, the data processing in Stokes polarimeters is given. Emphasis is laid on the methods for obtaining the Stokes parameters. Some predictions in terms of LWIR polarimeters are presented in the conclusion.

Opis:
In order to simplify the optical setup and the encryption process, a diffractive-imaging-based optical encryption system using a single diffraction pattern is proposed. A predesigned binary mask is placed before the plaintext in the encryption process, and three randomly distributed phase only masks are placed in the optical path. Only one diffraction pattern needs to be recorded as ciphertext by CCD. In the decryption process, an iterative phase retrieval algorithm is applied, in which the predesigned binary mask acts as a support constraint in the input plane. After the iterative process, an interpolation operation for the zero-valued pixels is also implemented. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposal are demonstrated by numerical simulation results.

Opis:
Minimally invasive intraoperative imaging plays a crucial role in delicate microsurgeries for precise operation monitoring in which fiber optic imaging can be considered as an endoscopy and surgical proximity guidance tool due to its compactness. This paper presents a near-infrared time-domain reflectometric common-path optical coherence tomography imaging technique using a bare-fiber probe mounted directly on a scanning galvanometer. The common-path setup allows the use of a freely adjustable optical path length and a disposable fiber probe, as well as eliminating the need for an additional dedicated reference optical path. Experimental results demonstrate clear discrimination between the brain tumor tissue and the normal tissue for mouse brains with the images acquired in real-time over a wide area. The proposed method enables real-time and in situ visualization of tumor resection for intraoperative imaging, and this study demonstrates the feasibility of its application to microsurgical interventions.

Due to outstanding light shaping potential, freeform optical surfaces have been considered theoretically from centuries. Recently, they gained increased interest due to the availability of manufacturing technologies. Nevertheless, the design of freeform surfaces still becomes a challenge, associated with advanced mathematical concepts and significant computing power. In this work, a very interesting unification of theories is mentioned. It is shown how the problem of optimal redistribution of mass, analyzed in the 18th century, corresponds to the problem of optical beam shaping realized by freeform surface. Both issues are governed by the same partial differential equation. In the paper, a novel numerical algorithm for solving this partial differential equation is discussed. As an example, a design of freeform lens, capable of casting completely arbitrary shapes, is presented.

Based on a fully phase encoding and phase retrieval algorithm, a diffractive-imaging-based optical encryption scheme with random illumination is proposed. In the encryption process, a QR code image is placed in the optic path to modulate the incident light and thus generate a random illumination, which has been demonstrated to enable the proposed scheme to resist the multi-slice ptychographic phase retrieval algorithm attack. The plaintext is phase-encoded, and then encrypted by two random phase masks. The diffraction pattern in the output plane is recorded as ciphertext by a CCD camera. For decryption, an iterative phase retrieval algorithm with median filtering operation is implemented. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness, security, and robustness of the proposal.

We propose an optical system employing a compound parabolic concentrator for near infrared spectroscope in noninvasive blood components testing. A truncated two-stage compound parabolic concentrator system is designed, which consists of a normal first-stage compound parabolic concentrator and a truncated second-stage compound parabolic concentrator. Using advanced ray tracing technique, the optical efficiencies of truncated two-stage compound parabolic concentrator system, ellipsoidal mirror system and non-optical-focusing mirror system are calculated to be 25.4%, 22.4% and 4.0%, respectively. Furthermore, the total length of truncated two-stage compound parabolic concentrator is only about 68 mm while the ellipsoidal mirror is 110 mm. It indicates that the truncated two-stage compound parabolic concentrator system enhances the ability of concentrating human diffuse transmission light, and it is a benefit to improve signal-to-noise ratio of noninvasive biochemical analysis system efficiently. Due to the advantage of small size, it tends to achieve a miniature instrument.

Growing intensity of marine transport results in the increase of the amount of oil pollution released into the sea water. The presence of oil in the sea, which is thought to have come from accidental spills or tanker disaster, is connected mainly with the daily operation of marine engines. Pollution from ships engines, can reach the sea water masses together with ballast or bilge water as the result of human error or a failure of marine equipment. This paper is focused on a comparison of the optical properties of marine waters and oil substances. These include the spectra of absorption coefficient, spectra of scattering coefficient and scattering phase-function (for different wavelength) which describes an angular distribution of scattered light intensity in the sea water. The light scattering phase function depends on the water constituents like mineral suspensions, zooplankton and phytoplankton cells, gas bubbles or so-called yellow substances as well as oil droplets of water pollution. Detection of oil substances in the sea can be effective when it is done remotely, from ships, buoys, inshore or offshore towers, the decks of aircraft or satellites. The knowledge of the listed above properties of natural (clean) seawater is necessary, because they determine the field of light coming out from the sea and allow interpret images of sea surface from point of view of crude oil and the petroleum products detection. In this study we also discuss optical contrast of oil residuals in the sea in various sea regions.

Opis:
Different optical techniques were applied to describe the thermal and chemical processes that occur in a SI small engine from the ported fuel injection and in-cylinder mixture formation to the combustion process and the exhaust emission. In PFI SI engines, the atomized fuel is sprayed towards the intake valves, where it may evaporate, puddle or rebound. Furthermore, a portion of the fuel may flow directly into the cylinder or impinge upon the port walls. These phenomena occur in varying degrees and depend upon the engine design, injector location and engine operation. Potentially the fuel can enter the cylinder in a poorly atomized state, leading to an increased unburned hydrocarbon emissions. This is particularly true during cold operation, when evaporation is low. In the small-motorcycle and scooter engines the fuel injection occurs in smaller intake manifold than light-duty vehicle engines, increasing the criticism of the fuel-wall interaction. The experimental investigations were performed in a single cylinder engine constituted by an elongated optically accessible piston and equipped with the head and injection system of a reference 4-stroke engine for small vehicles. High spatial resolution imaging was used to characterize the fuel injection phase. The cycle resolved visualization was performed to follow the flame propagation from the intake spark ignition to the exhaust phase. Natural emission spectroscopy measurements were applied in the ultraviolet-visible wavelength range to identify the chemical species that are markers of the combustion process and to follow the formation of pollutants.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging has become a useful tool in medical diagnosis over the past 25 years, because of its ability to visualize intracellular structures at high resolution. The main objective of this work is to add electronic feedback to the optical coherence tomography setup to increase its sensitivity. Noise added to the measured interferogram obscures some details of examined tissue layered structure. Adjusting signal power level in such a way to improve signal-to-noise ratio can help to enhance image quality. Electronic feedback is added to enhance system sensitivity. A logarithmic amplifier is included in the OCT setup to automatically adapt signal level. Moreover, the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer is controlled according to the farthest layer detected in the A-scan. These techniques are tested showing an improvement in obtained image of a human nail.
