Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the methods of chromatic dispersion compensation in the existing, already built fiber optic telecommunications lines, based on ITU G.652 A and B fibers with the constantly growing demand for bit rates in DWDM systems. Due to the enormous investment costs, it is impossible to replace the cables used with NZDSF, hence the chapter analyzes methods of improving the bandwidth without replacing all cables. Typical models of the optimization of chromatic dispersion in the existing lines are presented.
Przedstawiono typowe modele procesu optymalizacji dyspersji chromatycznej w istniejących liniach.

Opis:
The paper is a review and comparative analysis of most common techniques proposed to attach additional data or identification information to digital signals in optical fiber networks by purely optical means. Such "labels" or "headers" can be attached either to continuous bit streams, e.g., in SDH networks or to optical packets. They enable to monitor, route and identify signals in transparent optical networks, especially those with optical wavelength multiplexing, allow management and supervision of remote optical amplifiers and can be used in optical switching systems. Other applications of this relatively unknown technology include monitoring of optical path dispersion, equalization of channels in DWDM systems and detection of intrusion or jamming in highly secure networks.

Opis:
Experiments and theoretical analysis of influence of temperature on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode optical fibers and cables are presented. Forces generated by contracting buffer create optical birefringence and increase fiber PMD at low temperatures. Single mode fiber (SMF) in 0.9 mm polymeric tight-buffer can exhibit an extra component of PMD exceeding 0.3 ps/?km in such conditions. On the other hand, tight-buffered spun nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers (NZDSF) and optical units with stranded single mode fibers have showed good stability of PMD over wide range of temperatures. This is due to presence of circular strain in the core, blocking accumulation of mechanically induced birefringence.

Opis:
A novel dispersion-compensating fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based en/decoder is proposed to compensate both the out-band and in-band dispersion in a time-spreading/wavelength-hopping (TS/WH) optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) system. The experimental realization of such en/decoders only needs a uniform-pitch phase mask and a sub-micrometer precision moving stage. Such an en/decoder pair with the ability of compensating the dispersion of transmission in 20-km single mode fiber (SMF) is simulated and experimentally fabricated. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the decoded pulse can be recovered without any distortion owing to the elimination of dispersion.

Opis:
This paper presents results of laboratory tests investigating influence of temperature on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in variety of single mode optical fibers and cables. Research was focused primarily on tight-buffered fibers, where most pronounced effects resulting from buffer shrinkage or expansion were expected. The goal was to verify performance of optical fiber cable exposed to extreme temperatures and to compare behavior of different cables. Very strong temperature dependence of PMD was detected in standard single mode fibers with 0.9 mm tight buffer, commonly used in indoor cables, and in complete cable with such fiber. However, both nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers, spun during drawing and optical unit used in optical ground wire (OPGW), where 12 fibers are stranded showed good stability of PMD during thermal cycling. The same optical unit extracted from OPGW exhibited excellent PMD stability also during accelerated life test.

Opis:
Optical transmission of microwave (MW) and millimeter-wave (MMW) signals has become an intensive research area in the last decade. There is a growing interest in optical processing of MW signals [1,2], phased array applications [3] and wireless distribution of broadband data in fiber-fed MMW subscriber access systems [4 - 10]. This paper extends the existing models of MW/MMW optical links that are based on optical intensity [10, 11]. The model is suitable for estimating harmonic levels of the MW modulation signal generated in the optical path. Considering a MW fiber-optic link both the optical transmitter and the receiver are responsible for harmonic generation. Furthermore, the optical fiber itself inserted between the transmitter and receiver induces harmincs due to dispersion. Exact modelling of harmonic generation requires a calculation based on the optical field instead of on a purely intensity basis [12 -14].

Opis:
The paper presents optical measurements - spectral loss, OTDR and PMD, temperature cycling and mechanical tests - bending, twist and crush, performed on Yb-doped single mode fibers and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Several issues related specifically to characterization of such specialty fibers, like measurement errors and artifacts as well as coupling of test instruments to samples are presented. Of particular importance is reliable and low-loss fusion splicing of specialty fibers to standard single mode fibers (SMF), as most commercially available fiber test instruments are fitted with SMF interfaces only.

Opis:
An all-optical vestigial sideband carrier suppressed return-to-zero to non-return-to-zero format conversion is presented with the help of simulation using cross-phase modulation in a nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber. For comparative analysis, a semiconductor optical amplifier based conversion is also considered. Through the process of spectral filtering, the wavelength converted output signal is recovered from a broadened optical spectrum. Error-free conversion of vestigial sideband carrier suppressed return-to-zero pulses to non-return-to-zero format is presented at 10 Gb/s using a 210 − 1 bit sequence and is able to transmit the recovered data through a distance of 50 km having a power penalty of around 1.38 dB in the case of dispersion shifted fiber, whereas a semiconductor optical amplifier performs abysmally.
