Opis:
Optical fiber technology is an important branch of science and technology, but also economy. Together with related disciplines it creates wider areas like optoelectronics and photonics. Optical fiber technology is developed in this country rather dynamically, proportionally to the available funds designed locally for research and applications. Recently this development was enhanced with considerable funds from European Operational Funds Innovative Economy POIG and Human Capital POKL. The paper summarizes the development of optical fiber technology in Poland from academic perspective during the period of last 2-3 years. Probably the digest is not very not full. An emphasis is put on development of optical fiber manufacturing methods. This development was illustrated by a few examples of optical fiber applications.

Opis:
Tailored, specialty optical fibres, made of complex glasses, called collectively as a non-telecommunications or instrumentation family, serve for various optical wave transformations for particular functional purposes and optical signal processing, rather than for long distance lossless and dispersionless, undistorted transmission. Research work on these fibres started during the late seventies of the last century in ITME/Warsaw and in Białystok University of Technology at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The initiator of this research at Glass Works Białystok [39] and Białystok University of Technology [4] was, then a very young engineer, Jan Dorosz. Over 35 years of development of the technological team, under his skilful management, resulted in a top laboratory which today does research at the cutting edge of the photonics science. The Białystok Optical Fibre Technology Laboratory (OFTL) is now a pearl in the crown of his Alma Mater. The paper opens this special issue of the PAS Bulletin on Technical Sciences, devoted to professor Jan Dorosz, and shows some of the developments in the area of optical fibre photonics, which were carried out at his active laboratory.

Opis:
We investigate a fiber diameter influence on optical transport of dielectric particles along subwavelength optical fibers using a near infrared laser of 1.55 μm wavelength. Theoretical analysis indicates that at 1.55 μm, the evanescent field at the fiber surface increases at first and then decreases with an increase of the fiber diameter from 600 nm to 1.6 μm, exhibiting a maximum at the fiber diameter of 950 nm. Based on three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations, optical scattering forces acted on the dielectric particles and transport velocities of the particles were calculated for two fibers in the diameters of 930 nm and 1.5 μm. To support the theoretical analysis, experiments were performed using the two fibers to transport SiO2 particles (sizes of 530 nm and 1.5 μm) and TiO2 particles (size of 1.5 μm). The results show that with the same laser power launched into the two fibers, larger transport velocities can be obtained along the 930 nm diameter fiber.

We have investigated the optical switching in a dielectric slab with a novel configuration of solid-state medium. This new scheme combines the attractive features of all-optical switching in dielectric medium doped with asymmetric quantum well nanostructure with the ability to convert the optical bistability to multistability (or vice versa) by using the strength of Fano interference and the energy splitting effect. The dependence of optical bistability behavior on the intensity of the strong coupling field and the slab thickness is also given.

Optical tweezers are a quite new tool for versatile manipulation of objects in micro and nanoscale. Optical tweezers may be used in various fields, for example in microbiology. The observation and measurement take place inside the specially focused laser beam. The holographic methods enables generating several optical traps that can be driven, independently. The possible applications include the force measurement between molecules and cells (at the level of piconewtons), cells segregation and transport, cells activity analysis, DNA mechanical properties analysis and many others. In this paper, short technical data on the systems constructed in our group, along with the description of potential applications, are presented.

We report on the observation of the polygonal whirlpools in the thin layer of ferrofluid under illumination with a laser beam carrying optical vortex and in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. This kind of structures have attracted attention after discovering a hexagonal storm in Saturn’s atmosphere. Our polygonal whirlpools were created in a closed system (no free surfaces) in micro-scale (whirlpool diameter <20 μm) by the use of holographic optical tweezers. The polygonal shape was changed by varying the magnetic field strength or value of the optical vortex topological charge.

We demonstrate output-input properties of incident light in a defect slab doped by three-level quantum dot nanostructure via quantum coherence and Fano-interference phenomena. Here, we will show that the output-input properties of the system can be adjusted by the Fano-interference strength, amplitude and the relative phase of the driving fields, respectively. Also, we consider the thickness effect of defect medium on controlling the output-input behaviors of probe light. Moreover, we realize that it is possible to switch between optical bistability and optical multistability by optimizing the conditions which are more practical in all-optical switching based nanoscale devices.

This paper reports on examination of the latest generation of telecom optical fibers for the Brillouin backscattering strain sensor application. Over 30 fibers from 5 different manufactures have been tested in terms of their ability to create a stable and accurate strain sensor. It has been proved that fibers that belong to the same standard, according to ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union), and even if provided by one manufacturer, demonstrate fundamentally different Brillouin backscattering response. It has been shown that unimodal Brillouin spectrum cannot be treated as the main parameter for fiber selection. In order to achieve accurate and reproducible results of strain measurement, it is necessary to perform initial examination of the fibers over the range of laser pulse width.

The paper is a review and comparative analysis of most common techniques proposed to attach additional data or identification information to digital signals in optical fiber networks by purely optical means. Such "labels" or "headers" can be attached either to continuous bit streams, e.g., in SDH networks or to optical packets. They enable to monitor, route and identify signals in transparent optical networks, especially those with optical wavelength multiplexing, allow management and supervision of remote optical amplifiers and can be used in optical switching systems. Other applications of this relatively unknown technology include monitoring of optical path dispersion, equalization of channels in DWDM systems and detection of intrusion or jamming in highly secure networks.

Opis:
We present a novel encryption method for multiple images in a discrete multiple-parameter fractional Fourier transform scheme, using complex encoding, theta modulation and spectral fusion. All pairs of original images are encoded separately into a complex signal. The spectrum of each complex signal can then be scattered into various positions in the spectral plane and multiplexed into one spectral image with a combination of theta modulation and spectral fusion. After Fourier transforming back to the spatial domain, the multiplexed signal is encrypted in the discrete multiple-parameter fractional Fourier transform domain. Information about the original images can only be successfully decrypted given the possession of all correct keys. The parameters of chaotic pixel scrambling for the proposed method enlarge the key space. Moreover, the proposed method solves the crosstalk problem of multiple images and improves the multiplexing capacity. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
