    Opis:
    In this paper we propose a method for object description based on two wellknown clustering algorithms (k-means and mean shift) and the SURF method for keypoints detection. We also perform a comparison of these clustering methods in object description area. Both of these algorithms require one input parameter; k-means (k, number of objects) and mean shift (h, window). Our approach is suitable for images with a non-homogeneous background thus, the algorithm can be used not only on trivial images. In the future we will try to remove non-important keypoints detected by the SURF algorithm. Our method is a part of a larger CBIR system and it is used as a preprocessing stage.

    Opis:
    In this paper we present a novel approach for image description. The method is based on two well-known algorithms: edge detection and blob extraction. In the edge detection step we use the Canny detector. Our method provides a mathematical description of each object in the input image. On the output of the presented algorithm we obtain a histogram, which can be used in various fields of computer vision. In this paper we applied it in the content-based image retrieval system. The simulations proved the effectiveness of our method.

    Opis:
    The paper presents various methods for quantitative description of material structures. The main focus is on direct methods of description based on image analysis. In particular, techniques for the estimation of the size, shape and spatial distribution of structural elements observed by different microscopic techniques are described. The application of these methods for the characterization of the structures of engineering materials is demonstrated on a stainless steel used in petrochemical installations. It is shown that the methods applied are useful for the assessment of service degradation of materials.

    Jednym z najbardziej znanych typów wizerunków ikonograficznych w Kościele Wschodnim jest ikona Chrystusa Pantokratora (Wszechwładcy). Obraz ten w swoim typie ma genezę wczesnochrześcijańską. Należy wiązać to przedstawienie ikoniczne z tematyką Wniebowstąpienia oraz zagadnieniem zobrazowania w malarstwie sakralnym – kwestii czasów eschatycznych, tj. Powtórnego Przyjścia (Paruzji) Jezusa Chrystusa w Boskiej Chwale na ziemię, aby sądzić żywych i umarłych, (jako władca całego Stworzenia). Tekst jest komentarzem do kopii tego typu obrazu, zamieszczonego na okładce czasopisma.
    One of the best known types of iconic image in the Eastern Orthodox Church is the icon of Christ Pantocrator. The genesis of this type of icon goes back to the times of Early Christianity. This iconic presentation is to be connected with the theme of the Ascension and the problem of pictorial renderings in sacral painting – the question of the Second Coming (Parousia) of Jesus Christ in God’s Glory on the earth, to judge the living and the dead (as the Lord of the whole Creation). The text is a commentary on the copy of this type of the picture reproduced on the cover of the journal.

    Die Mitteilbarkeit von Kunsterfahrung bildet ein zentrales und lebhaft diskutiertes Problem in den ästhetischen Reflexionen des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die individuelle, gefühlsbetonte und zugleich scharfsinnige Kunstbetrachtung erzeugt eine bisher kaum in solchem Grade wahrgenommene sinnliche Nähe zum Kunstobjekt. Diese Erfahrung wird zur Herausforderung nicht nur für die Bildbeschreibung, sondern auch für die theoretische Kunstliteratur, die in vielerlei Hinsicht aus ihrer diskursiven Enge ausbricht. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den sprachlichen Veränderungen in den theoretischen Erörterungen am Beispiel von frühen Schriften von Johann Joachim Winckelmann und Anton Raphael Mengs. Die enge Verbindung zwischen der Redekunst und der Kunstbeschreibung kommt dabei besonders zum Vorschein.
    The 18th century saw a shift in the meaning of art. The communicability of art experience was a central and lively discussed problem in the aesthetic reflections of the 18th century. The individual, emotional and yet astute viewing of art produced a sensual proximity to the artwork hardly noticed so far. This experience was a challenge not only for the description of pictures, but also for the theoretical literature on art. This essay deals with the changes of style in theoretical literature on art on the example of the early writings of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Anton Raphael Mengs. Particularly, the close connection between rhetoric and the description of art will be shown.
    Problem, jak ująć w słowa sferę sztuki, był w refleksjach estetycznych wieku osiemnastego jednym z centralnych i bardzo żywo dyskutowanych tematów. Indywidualny charakter oglądu dzieł sztuki, bazujący na doznaniach uczuciowych i jednocześnie przenikliwy intelektualnie, budzi poczucie zmysłowej bliskości w kontakcie ze sztuką, niedoświadczane do tej pory w podobnym stopniu. Doznania te stają się wyzwaniem nie tylko dla nowatorskich prób opisu obrazu, lecz również wpływają na literaturę teoretyczną, która w wieloraki sposób przekracza dotychczasowe dyskursywne kategorie. Poniższy szkic omawia elementy zmian języka literatury teoretycznej poświęconej sztuce na przykładzie wczesnych pism Johanna Joachima Winckelmanna i Antona Raphaela Mengsa. Na szczególną uwagę w tekstach tych zasługują związki między retoryką i oglądem dzieł sztuki.

    Opis:
    This paper presents the video-based description method for vehicles passing a detection field. A sequence of source images is created by consecutive frames of the input video stream. The source images are converted into binary target images using the analysis of small gradients. Binary values of the target images represent edges and surfaces comprised in the source images. For all images, the same detection field composed of segments is defined. Inside each segment of the detection field, the sum of edge values is calculated. For the entire detection field, an adjusted sum of the edge values is determined. A vehicle passing the detection field changes the number of edge values within individual segments and the adjusted sum of the edge values for the entire detection field. Vehicle passage through the detection field is described by a discrete function that associates the adjusted sum of the edge values determined for the entire detection field in the current binary image to the ordinal number of the current image in the sequence of source images.

    This paper presents a summary of the work presented as an invited paper at MIT 2008 International Conference. The work comprises a general note on the problems we meet in our everyday contact with biometrics and their different systems. A particular attention is paid to the anti-spoofing approaches in having a safe and convenient system of human verification for personal identification. A conclusion is drawn that neither stand-alone nor multi-system Biometrics are ideal and convenient to people for their daily necessity of being identified. The author suggests a system that may seem practical in banks and cash machines, for example, in which a biometric system is used (fingerprint or face identification for example) in conjunction with the popular means of account securing, the PIN code.
