    The paper describes issues of the proscenium area shown on the example of two opera houses. The subject of the analysis was the design of the Chamber Opera House in Kalisz and the already existing building of the Opera House in Krakow. It covers the influence of the proscenium walls and forestage ceiling on the acoustic conditions in the auditorium. Another subject of the investigation was the influence of the primary proscenium, designed in the very first opera houses in Baroque. The analyses were carried out by means of two computer softwares: Ray Model and Catt Acoustic, and such parameters as sound strength (G), reverberation time (RT), early decay time (EDT), C80 (clarity) index and center time (TS) were calculated. The parameters were further analyzed in the auditorium for three positions of the sound source on the stage.

    Opis:
    Room acoustics must be adapted to the intended function, and acoustic requirements vary depending on the type of sound production. Acoustic investigations were carried out in the hall of the Olimpia Academic Music Theater, which was originally a cinema. Acoustic requirements for cinemas are entirely different from those for opera singing. To ensure good acoustic conditions in the interior, an architectural adaptation or introduction of variable acoustics is necessary. The analysed interior was adapted to the needs of opera singing and the cinema function was abandoned. The objective of the research is to evaluate the acoustic quality of the hall for the purposes of an opera house.

    This paper examines the American career of the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921). It is argued that Caruso’s experience at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House was of greater importance to the evolution of twentieth-century tenor singing than is generally recognized. This is so because of the demand for vocal histrionics over refinement among the city’s opera going public, which exerted a distinct influence on Caruso’s singing. As a result, the tenor’s willingness to indulge his audiences’ tastes contributed to a profound stylistic transformation from the polished Italian Bel Canto (literally, “beautifiil singing”) School, to the morę emotive Yerismo (literally, “true to life”) singing style that predomi- nates today. The writings of Caruso’s contemporary critics are examined along with his recordings for America’s Victor Recording Company, in order to document the transfor- mation of his singing, and show how after refming his veristic mannerisms he changed critical standards and created a new form of operatic address. Hence were it not for Caru- so’s American experience, the stylistic development of modem tenor singing would have unquestionably been much different, meaning that Enrico Caruso’s forging of the verismo style and his recorded legacy can be considered one of America’s primary contributions to the art of opera.

    The paper deals with the problem of acoustic correction in historic opera theatres with the auditorium layout in the form of a horseshoe with deep underbalcony cavities limited with a semicircular wall surface. Both geometry of the cavities and excessive sound absorption determine acoustic phenomena registered in this area of the hall. The problem has been observed in the Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Lviv, Ukraine, where acoustic tests were carried out, simulation calculations performed, and finally a diffusion panel worked out designed for the rear wall of the underbalcony space. Acoustic measurements carried out after installation of the diffusers revealed favourable changes in the sound strength factor G within the range of medium and high frequencies in the underbalcony and auditorium centre area. By replacing textile tapestry with diffusion panels, a significant reduction of sound absorption was achieved for the frequency range above 1 kHz and an increase of uniformity of acoustic parameters registered in the hall. The method presented in the paper can be applied in historic halls of the similar type as well as contemporary rooms where there is a need for correction of acoustic flaws related to sound focusing or the echo effect.

    Teatr operowy jako przestrzeń kulturalna i muzyczna jest wpisany w strukturę przestrzenną miasta. W obrębie swojej struktury architektonicznej podlega modyfi kacjom. W pracy podjęto problematykę przystosowania sceny operowej na potrzeby koncertu. Adaptacja sceny jest niezbędna, gdyż przedstawienie operowe stawia inne wymagania przestrzenne i akustyczne niż koncert. Wraz ze zmianami przestrzennymi w obrębie sceny następują zmiany własności akustycznych na widowni. Na podstawie konkretnych realizacji przedstawiono różne typy muszli koncertowych oraz wskazano powiązania pomiędzy architekturą muszli koncertowej a akustyką. Dodatkowo przedstawiono wnioski z symulacji komputerowych dla obiektu projektowanego i z badań doświadczalnych w obiekcie rzeczywistym. Analizy wskazują, że jest to istotne zagadnienie architektoniczne, albowiem brak wiedzy o wymaganiach architektoniczno-akustycznych dla projektowanych muszli koncertowych skutkuje tym, że konstrukcja ta nie spełnia swojej funkcji.
    The opera house as a cultural and musical area writes itself well into the spatial structure of the city. Within its own architectural structure, it is subject to modifi cations. The following paper addresses the issue of adapting the opera stage for the needs of a concert. Adaptation of the stage is necessary as the opera performance has different spatial and acoustic requirements from those of the concert. Alongside spatial changes within the stage, acoustic properties in the auditorium change. On the basis of concrete realizations, different types of orchestra shells have been shown and connections between orchestra shell architecture and acoustics have been pointed out. In addition, conclusions of computer simulations for an object whose design is under way, and conclusions of investigation in an actual object have been presented here. The analyses point out that it is a crucial architectural issue. Lack of knowledge of architectural-acoustic requirements for orchestra shells results in constructions not performing their function.

    The article describes chosen design aspects of prominent buildings that serve for performing and listening to music and that become part of the urban public space. The space for the audience surrounding a concert hall has the characteristics of a public space. In recent years this has become very important. Przestrzeń dla publiczności wokół sali koncertowej posiada cechy przestrzeni publicznej, która w realizacjach ostatnich lat nabiera dużego znaczenia. W artykule skupiono się na trzech przykładach, by pokazać jak jakość ukształtowania obiektu i jego sali koncertowej sprawiają, że budynek przyciąga ludzi i zyskuje rangę przestrzeni publicznej.

    The article gives a broad overview of the repertoire of opera theatres of Paris during the twenties of the 19th century, analyzes some of the processes of the opera genre renewal. The creative connections of F. Halévy with the representatives of the theatre world, who played at an early stage a decisive role in the creative destiny of the composer (J. Rossini, J. Pixerecourt, G. Saint-Georges, M. Schlesinger) are revealed. The information on the history and fate of the first operas of F. Halévy Two pavilions, Pygmalion, Herostrat, Craftsman is provided. The composition, the principles of musical characteristics of the characters, the peculiarities of the musical language of Two pavilions and Craftsman are analyzed. The connection of the early works of Halévy with the socio-political life of the country, the general thrust of the development of musical culture of France and new trends that have emerged in the twenties (the development of the genre of lyrical comedy about the lives of ordinary people, the opera about the representatives of different professions, an ap-peal to the provincial cultures) is established.
