The onymic world in the Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga of the Witcher, translated into Italian Abstract The paper presents the results of the analysis of the names in Italian translation of AndrzejSapkowski’s fantasy saga series about The Witcher, and the video game inspired by it. The author of the article distinguishes tendencies in the applied translation mechanismsappropriate for the literary and video game space. He discusses the representative rangesof names associated with characters, places, and other objects individually identified in TheWitcher’s story. He also details the motivation for the translation and unsuccessful choicesthat affect some of the translations of The Witcher’s onymy into Italian. Battle of Brenna or battle of old Bottocks? War and battle names in Polish fantasy novels Proper names are a very important element of language in every literary work, especially in fantasy novels. They compose a map of reality unknown to the reader but they also tell the story of imagined world. Chrononyms are an example of proper names which appear in fantasy novels. They are names of historical events. Names of wars and battles are often used in books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, Ewa Białołęcka, Anna Brzezińska, Feliks W. Kres and Krzysztof Piskorski. This publication analyses how writers create chrononyms, how similar to real chrononyms names of wars and battles in fantasy books are, and what functions they perform in novels. Powieść Ewy Nowackiej Małgosia contra Małgosia jest przykładem powieści powojennej. Został w niej zastosowany dwoisty charakter przestrzeni czasowej, powodujący dwoistość świata przedstawionego. Użyte w powieści nazwy podporządkowane są głównemu zamierzeniu artystycznemu, tj. przedstawieniu miejsca i czasu akcji jako jednej, spójnej rzeczywistości. Warstwa semantyczna i konotacyjna nazw własnych, a także wszelkie nawiązania intersemiotyczne, dają możliwość wielopłaszczyznowej interpretacji literackich onimów oraz sprawiają, że świat przedstawiony w powieści jest bardzo bogaty, głęboko osadzony w tle historycznym i kulturowym. Nazwy użyte są w licznych funkcjach stylistycznych. Funkcjonują w kulturowo-komunikacyjnym obszarze użycia języka. Ewa Nowacka, stosując odpowiednie nazwy własne, stworzyła harmonijną literacką całość.
The novel by Ewa Nowacka, Małgosia versus Małgosia, is an example of a post-war novel. There has been used the dual nature of time space causing the duality of the world presented. The names used in the novel are subordinate to the main artistic intention, ie. the presentation of the place and time of action as a single, coherent reality. The semantic and connotative layers of the proper nouns as well as all the intersemiotic references give the possibility of multifaceted interpretation of literary onyms and make the world depicted in the novel very rich and deeply rooted in the historical and cultural background. The names are used in a number of stylistic features. They function in a cultural-communicative area of the language use. Ewa Nowacka, using appropriate proper nouns, creates a harmonious literary whole.

Opis:
Proper names should be recognized as a significant factor of a literary character and in broader perspective of bringing closer the novel problems. The main novel character, Leon Płoszowski, percepts and sense the world through the self-analysis and analysis of the reality surrounding him. Proper names above all emphasize two features: erudition and cosmopolitism of the novel character. His formation and contact through the years with high culture do not help him to put the world – both: one inside and one outside him – in order, but all of this remains a stigma in a form of association everything with art, literature, philosophy etc. It is confirmed in the novel by numerous proper names. The fact that proper names in basic for Leon Płoszowski characteristics places in the novel apply mostly to the past, causes that they form sort of „onomastic museum”.

Utwory Wisławy Szymborskiej doczekały się wielu opracowań, zwłaszcza literaturoznawczych. Badacze (np. S. Balbus, E. Balcerzan, A. Legeżyńska) szczegółowo omówili najważniejsze tematy tej poezji oraz cechy jej poetyki. Zwracali też uwagę na  zabiegi stylistyczne  oraz stosowane przez poetkę gry językowe. Jednak w niewielkim stopniu interesowała ich warstwa onimiczna wierszy. Tymczasem poezja Szymborskiej jest źródłem bogatego zbioru nazw własnych, występujących samodzielnie lub stanowiących człony metafor i porównań. Są to zarówno antroponimy, jak i nazwy miejscowe, hydronimy oraz ideonimy. W dorobku poetki są też utwory pozbawione nazw własnych, co także jest sygnałem funkcji tekstowych (np. przemilczenia, przemijania, niepewności). Przeprowadzone analizy (np. wiersza „Portret kobiecy”) pokazują, jak objęcie obserwacją nazw własnych wpływa na wzbogacenie interpretacyjnych wniosków.
There are many studies concerning Wisława Szymborska’s works, especially in the field of literary studies. Researchers (including S. Balbus, E. Balcerzan, A. Legeżyńska) have discussed in detail the features and the most important themes of her poetry. They also paid attention to stylistic devices and language games used by the poet. However, they were little interested in the onymic layer of her poems. Meanwhile, Szymborska’s poetry is a rich source of proper names, which appear independently or constitute elements of metaphors and comparisons. Among these onyms, there are both anthroponyms and place names, hydronyms and ideonyms. The poet’s oeuvre also includes works devoid of proper names, which is also an important signal of textual functions (e.g. concealment, evanescence, uncertainty). The conducted analyses (e.g. of the poem “Portrait of a woman”) show how the analysis of proper names enriches the interpretative conclusions.

The theme of the description and analysis are the titles of stories in the collection „Na Skalnym Podhalu” by Kazimierz Tetmajer, as well as the title of the whole book itself. The aim of this description is to indicate the formal (syntactic) and semantic differentiation of titles, to present their stylistic and textual conditions and determine the function which they have in the structure of individual stories and in the whole collection. As far as the form is concerned, one can distinguish between double (3) and simple (36) titles. A considerable number of simple titles are in the form of a sentence (10), one title represents announcements (nominal sentences), the remaining ones (25) are the titles in the form of notification. The most common and the most characteristic titles for that collection are the titles-sentences with a structure of Jak umarł Jakub Zych and determining announcements with a structure of O Wojtku cudaku. In terms of semantics, the titles of stories represent the basic type which is informative and descriptive one because they provide information on the content of stories: most often about main characters or plot themes, less frequently about the place of the action, theme or type of the text. One of the titles has an interpretative value. The titles occurring in “Na Skalnym Podhalu” strongly correlate with the style of texts in the collection, where the dominant principle is folklore. This principle is visible in the stylisation of the Podhale dialect and in the stylisation of a tale as the form of oral folk tale. Thus, the presence of dialect forms and dialect lexis as well as many proper names which were authentic lexically and often also denotatively, being connected with geographical and cultural space of the Podhale region and Tatra mountains. Furthermore, the pattern “O + miejscownik” (About + locative) referring to metatextual and pragmatic frame of oral folk tales also occurs very often. The titles of stories in the collection “Na Skalnym Podhalu” not only perform the typical delimitative, distinctive and identifying functions but also descriptive and — as in the case of the title of the whole book — integrative ones.

Celem artykułu jest pokazanie przestrzeni Poznania we współczesnym kryminale ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem warstwy onimicznej (urbanonimów oraz antroponimów) oraz tego, jak nazwy wpływają na obraz miasta i jego mieszkańców wyłaniający się z kart powieści. W artykule analizie poddano pięć kryminałów czworga różnych autorów. Kryminalny Poznań przypomina rzeczywiste miasto, ale nie jest jego odwzorowaniem, a zastosowane nazwy zazwyczaj spełniają inne funkcje niż tylko lokalizacja w przestrzeni. Autorzy przedstawiają miasto jako przestrzeń tętniącą życiem, będącą czasami niezależnym bohaterem (jak u Ryszarda Ćwirleja), a czasami przede wszystkim tłem wydarzeń (w powieściach pozostałych autorów). Literacki Poznań wyróżnia także szereg nazw charakterystycznych, powtarzających się w powieściach, które wyróżniają miasto na tle innych metropolii.
The aim of the article is to present Poznań's space in contemporary crime, with particular emphasis on the literary onomastics (urbanonyms and proper names) and show how names can influence the image of the city and its inhabitants. I have analyzed five detective stories which were written by four different authors. Literary city and the real one bear a lot of resemblance, but they are not the same. Urbanonyms and proper names used in novels usually perform different functions than just the location in space. The authors portray the city as a bustling, sometimes city is as important as the literary heroes (in Ryszard Ćwirlej's books), and sometimes it is just the background of the events (in the novels written by other authors). Literary Poznań also distinguishes a number of characteristic names, repeated in novels, which distinguish the city against the others.

The paper remarks on the role of literary names in contemporary Polish prose. The author notices that in the works under analysis aside to the proper nomine propria, we find a numerous group of quasi-names or individual descriptions. The essential result of the analysis is the perception that the hierarchy of the function of these names is different, and the rank of intertextual and metatextual function is especially significant.

Celem opracowania jest analiza strukturalna, semantyczna i funkcjonalna nazwisk rodzinnych bohaterów występujących w utworze „Kiermasy na Warmii” Walentego Barczewskiego. Akcja utworu toczy się w gospodarstwie wiejskim we wsi na terenie południowej Warmii w drugiej połowie XIX wieku.  Zastosowano metody filologicznej analizy i interpretacji onimów stosowane w onomastyce literackiej. Ustalono, że analizowane onimy to nazwiska polskie, przejrzyste etymologicznie i semantycznie, utworzone według jednolitych modeli strukturalnych: nazwiska męskie zakończone na -ski, żeńskie na -ska i formy zbiorowe rodzin w liczbie mnogiej. Dodatkowo wszystkie analizowane antroponimy były ściśle związane z rzeczywistością pozajęzykową, derywowane podobnie jak przymiotniki odmiejscowe od nazw wsi leżących na terenie południowej Warmii. Analiza językowo-funkcjonalna i semantyczna nazwisk, pozwoliła ukazać ich polifunkcyjny charakter, wydzielić wiele funkcji przypisywanych onimom w tekstach literackich. Są to takie funkcje jak: identyfikacyjno-dyferencjacyjna, lokatywna, socjologiczna, prestiżowa, tożsamościowa, socjolingwistyczna, emotywna i perswazyjna. Analizowane nazwiska mogą być przykładem kumulacji różnych funkcji pełnionych przez te same antroponimy.
The article discusses the problems of literary onomastics. The aim of the study was a structural, semantic and functional analysis of the family names of the protagonists appearing in Walenty Barczewski’s “Kiermasy na Warmii” (Fairs in Warmia). The story is set on a farm in a village in southern Warmia in the second half of the 19th century. The methods of philological analysis and interpretation of onyms used in literary onomastics have been applied. It has been established that the analysed onyms are Polish surnames, etymologically and semantically transparent, formed according to uniform structural models: male surnames ending in -ski, female surnames in -ska and collective forms used of families in the plural. All analysed anthroponyms were also closely related to the extra-linguistic reality, and derived, similarly to place-based adjectives, from the names of villages in southern Warmia. Linguistic, functional and semantic analysis of surnames allowed to present their polyfunctional character and distinguish many functions ascribed to onyms in literary texts. These functions are the following: identification and differentiation, localising, assignation of prestige and identity, as well as the sociolinguistic, emotive and persuasive functions. The analysed names may serve as examples of the accumulation of various functions performed by the same anthroponyms.

A Name in a Buttonhole — Onymy in Poetic Texts (Based on the Example of Bruno Jasieński’s Poetry)This article addresses the issue of the interpretation of proper names in poetry. The state of research on the functions of proper names in literature is well described, but it is possible to note the lack of a fixed interpretation strategy in poetry which means that, despite little interest in poetry, its researchers often try to propose their own methods of analysis. The authors of the article, who tackle onyms in the poetry of Bruno Jasieński, present their own methodological approach to the matter, based on B. Waldenfels’ concept of the “phenomenology of the alien”.

The article presents strategies to attract attention to names relating to the literary characters in selected children’s books. Proper names are often part of the plot. The proper names present characters and describe them. This means that they have semantic value. Names are often the result of language games, including various derivation processes. One of the most interesting formative mechanisms are all kinds of word-formation inspired by two principles. A complete understanding of the intention is almost always contextual. Animal characters are named after anthroponyms. This is a result of a tendency, fairly typical of children’s literature, to transmit all the characters’ traits and behaviors in a way which is relatable to man.

W artykule opisano rolę, znaczenie i funkcjonowanie nazw własnych w komunikacji literackiej Agnieszki Zimnowodzkiej jako składowych strategii onimicznych wspomagających rozwój kreatywności małych odbiorców.  Opis sposobów funkcjonowania nazw własnych pod kątem ich współbrzmienia z tekstem oparto na trzech poziomach interpretacyjnych – pragmatycznym, stylistycznym i psychologicznym. Szczegółowy ogląd nazw własnych wykazał, że uruchamiają one w tekście rozliczne funkcje – referencjalną, informacyjną, kreatywną, ekspresywno-stylistyczną, aksjologiczną, emocjonalną, poznawczą, aluzyjną, dydaktyczną i ludyczną. Wśród strategii onimicznych zastosowanych w opowiadaniach współczesnej pisarki wytypowano dwie nadrzędne: 1) Strategia semantycznej asocjacji nazw z różnych kategorii onimicznych i 2) Kontekstualna strategia nazewnicza przywołująca określone sytuacje komunikacyjne. Analiza nazw własnych wyekscerpowanych z tekstów opowiadań dla dzieci A. Zimnowodzkiej wykazała wiele nowatorskich rozwiązań w zakresie wykorzystania właściwości kategorialnych onimów w przestrzeni literackiej. Owe twory nazewnicze nie tylko ułatwiają i uatrakcyjniają małemu adresatowi odbiór lektury, ale i wspomagają jego kreatywność na wielu płaszczyznach rozwoju.  
The article describes the role, significance and functioning of proper names in the literary communication of Agnieszka Zimnowodzka seen as components of naming strategies enhancing the development of the creativity of young readers. The description of the functioning of proper names in regard to their harmony with the text was based on three interpretative levels – the pragmatic, stylistic and psychological. A detailed examination of the proper names revealed that they activate various functions in the text – the allusive, axiological, creative, cognitive, didactic, emotional, expressivestylistic, informative, ludic and referential. Two superior strategies were distinguished among the naming strategies used in the short stories by the discussed writer: 1) the strategy of the semantic association of names from various onymic categories, and 2) the contextual naming strategy that brings about particular communication situations. An analysis of the proper names taken from short stories for children written by Zimnowodzka showed many innovative solutions in the field of using the categorial properties of proper names in the literary sphere. These naming formations not only make the reading easier and more attractive to young recipients but also enhance their creativity in many developmental dimensions.

Opis:
The article expands and modifies the contexts in which literary onomastics currently operates. This strictly interdisciplinary field of research, primarily originating from linguistics, has sought out the contexts that triggered non-obvious meanings of names readable in the artistic work from the outset. The references were varied – stylistics, textology, philosophy, structural poetics. All of them significantly enriched onomastic nalyses, leaving some fundamental sense of insufficiency at the same time. That is the reason why we propose the project of the connection between literary onomastics and — now extremely extensive — theoretical thought. The article is not the end of this discussion, but rather an exploratory study and the beginning of scientific research. Consequently, there is no one ordering and chronological concept with a clear conclusion, but the main aim is to show the analysis of the claims relevant for further research. Therefore, several concepts of theoreticians interested in proper names in literature were discussed (far from a common phenomenon in this case). From the research projects analyzed, including among others: U. Eco, J.F. Lyo tard, P. de Man, there emerges a clear conviction of the need to end the search for a referential, texted name. In this place it refers, on the one hand, to itself, establishing its own unreal meaning (image-forming, phonic, intertextual); on the other, it concerns the author’s system of naming (and beyond), which is also an epistemological concept. The starting point of these diagnoses was the thoroughly interpreted self-analysis of artistic works made by Marcel Proust; for further analysis, the thesis of Walter Benn Michaels was also employed, which brings interest in proper names from literature to the domain of artistic experiences. The conducted analysis (designing future literary onomastic research) leads to the final conclusion that the proper name indicates the essence itself, the arche of our existence.

Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej z nich Imiona pogańskich żon Mieszka I zaprezentowano imiona, które autorzy czterech powieści i jednego wywiadu nadali żonom pierwszego historycznego władcy Polski. W dwóch powieściach jest to siedem imion (zgodnie z informacją z kroniki Galla Anonima, że Mieszko I „siedmiu żon zażywał”). W jednej – jedno imię, a w kolejnej – dwa. Wszystkie te staropolskie antroponimy są notowane w słownikach, albo utworzone zgodnie z konwencją epoki. Trzeba uznać, że autorzy analizowanych utworów pozostali wierni zasadom nurtu realistycznego, obowiązującego przy wprowadzaniu nazw własnych do powieści historycznych. Inny charakter ma wywiad z amerykańskim historykiem, który utworzył siedem imion o charakterze groteskowo-ludycznym. Druga część artykułu to Imię pierwszej chrześcijańskiej żony Mieszka I. Wzięto pod uwagę osiem powieści historycznych, których autorzy zastosowali trzy formy imienia czeskiej księżniczki: Dubrawka, Dobrawka i Dobrawa. Ta rozmaitość wypływa ze sporów na temat właściwego brzmienia jej imienia przeniesionego na grunt polszczyzny. Językoznawcy są zwolennikami formy Dąbrówka (wywodzonej od rdzenia o znaczeniu ‘ciemny’), która nie pojawiła się w żadnej powieści. Wydaje się, że pisarze idą raczej za historykami, zwolennikami formy Dobrawa (wiązanej z przymiotnikiem dobry). W artykule wzięto pod uwagę powieści następujących pisarzy: J. I. Kraszewskiego, K. Bunscha, A. Gołubiewa, F. Fenikowskiego, K. Dobkiewiczowej i E. Cherezińskiej oraz wywiad z mieszkającym w Polsce amerykańskim historykiem P. E. Steelem.
The article consists of two parts. In the first one, “Names of Pagan Wives of Mieszko I”, the author presented the names which the authors of four novels and one interview gave to the wives of the first historical ruler of Poland. In two of the novels, they mention seven names (according to the information provided by Gallus Anonymus, who wrote that Mieszko I “enjoyed seven wives”). In one of the novels one name is mentioned, and in the other one — two names. All those Old-Polish anthroponyms can either be found in dictionaries, or created in line with the convention of the time. It has to be admitted that the authors of the texts in question were faithful to the realistic trend while introducing proper names into historical novels. The interview with an American historian is different, as he created seven grotesque and ludicrous names. The other part of the article is “The Name of the First Christian Wife of Mieszko I”. Eight historical novels were taken into account. Their authors used three forms of the Czech princess’ name: Dubrawka, Dobrawka and Dobrawa. This diversity resulted from the debates concerning the proper pronunciation of her name in Polish. Linguists prefer the form Dąbrówka (derived from the stem that means ‛dark’), which did not appear in any of the novels. It seems that the authors of the novels follow the idea of historians who prefer the form Dobrawa (connected with the adjective dobry ‛good’). The novels of the following authors were taken into account: J.I. Kraszewski, K. Bunsch, A. Gołubiew, F. Fenikowski, K. Dobkiewiczowa, and E. Cherezińska, as well as the interview with P.E. Steele, an American historian living in Poland.

Opis:
Searching of God in the poetry of Anna Kamieńska has a few aspects: silent dialogue, experience of pain and mutual relations between God and a human being. This is a process which makes God’s image change and evolve. Besides apparent contradictions, particular images are combined and complete each other. The most expressive in Kamieńska’s poetry is the image of God of Silence. It shows that silence is the only condition that enable us to experience God’s presence. There are also other images of God such as: God of Light and Darkness and God present in pain. The usage of contradiction and paradox existing in the description of God is the characteristic feature of this poetry. What is more, such means creating the image of God are the evidence that God will always be a mystery for a human being, even if we are still trying to find out more about this Mystery and unify with God.
