    Opis:
    The following paper focuses on newspaper live blogs. The aim of the analysis is to investigate the structure and discourse properties of this news format. The analysis examines the basic conventions concerning the form and content of these text types, including structural components of live blogs, multimedia, quoting and linking patterns, as well as discourse strategies used to underline “liveness”, interactivity and evaluation. The analysis proves that the discourse of live blogs constitutes an example of open structure news discourse, and reflects a blending of discourse properties typical of blogs as well as of broadcast and newspaper reporting.

    Opis:
    The role of the media in polarizing the debate on immigration has been subject to a growing amount of research; yet little is known about whether and how online comment sections related to news articles on immigration reshape the journalistic narrative. This study examines readers’ reactions to the media coverage by employing a quantitative content analysis of over 6,000 users’ comments responding to 128 online news articles on immigration. It concludes that generally the discussants’ perspective does not differ significantly from the medium’s framing of the issue with one important exception: the human rights frame accentuated by the medium is strictly refused by the discussants. The discussants also bring the economic and cultural aspects of immigration into the debate. The article thus contributes to a more general understanding of the role the users’ discussions play in shaping the debates on controversial political issues.

    This paper examines the Czech online news media representation of Vladimir Putin during three presidential elections (American of 2016, Czech and Russian of 2018). The portrayal of the Russian leader is examined using the methods of the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), mainly by the approach formulated by Teun van Dijk. The results showed a negatively biased portrayal of the president, Russian policy and the country itself, which corresponds with the historical-political context of the Czech-Russian relations, and which is in accordance with the Western media discourse. Applying the methods of global coherence revealed that the overarching theme of the coverage is Putin’s efforts to re-establish Russia as the global power and to restore the binary world as it was during the Cold war, while the methods of local coherence disclosed many implications, categorizations and the ubiquitous sarcasm and negativity in most of the texts.

    With the development of the media are related threats to the security of the information. Today „fake news” is a distortion, a misrepresentation or over interpretation. On the basis of false information circulated the entire disinformation portals industry has grown. Duplication of false information may result from accidental events as well as deliberate actions from people.

    Przeciwnicy szczepień od ponad dwustu lat wyrażają swoje obawy dotyczące niepożądanych skutków wakcynacji. Kierują się powodami wyznaniowymi i światopoglądowymi, odmawiając zaszczepienia siebie i dzieci. Argumentują, iż obowiązek szczepień to ograniczenie ich praw człowieka. Ruch antyszczepionkowy obecny jest w sferze społecznej od XIX w., jednak dopiero po publikacji artykułu Andrew Wakefielda z końca XX w. na temat domniemanego związku pomiędzy szczepieniem a autyzmem – ruch zyskał dużą popularność i przyczynił się do znacznego wzrostu liczby dzieci niezaszczepionych. Współcześnie w erze elektronicznej, masowej komunikacji wydaje się, iż przed badaczami zarówno nauk medycznych, jak i społecznych stoją nowe wyzwania związane z rozpowszechnieniem ruchu. Obecne w cyberprzestrzeni mowa nienawiści, fake news i dezinformacje wzmacniają i utrwalają postawy antyszczepionkowe. Fenomen Facebooka sprawia, iż każda informacja może być kilka tysięcy razy udostępniona innym internautom – nawet ta nieprawdziwa i wprowadzająca w błąd.
    The opponents of vaccinations have been expressing their concerns about the undesirable effects of vaccinations for more than two hundred years. They are guided by religious and ideological reasons and refuse to immunize themselves and children. They argue that the obligation to vaccinate is a limitation of their human rights. The vaccination movement has been present in the social sphere since the 19th century, however after the publication of Andrew Wakefield’s article on the subject of the alleged connection between vaccination and autism – the movement became very popular and contributed to a significant increase in the number of unvaccinated children in some countries. Nowadays, in the cyberspace and mass communication, it seems that both medical and social sciences face new challenges related to the spread of the movement. Hate speech, fake news and disinformation present in cyberspace strengthen and consolidate anti-vaccine attitudes. The phenomenon of Facebook means that every information can be made available to other users a few thousand times – even the untrue and misleading.

    Artykuł pokazuje, że internetowym portalom informacyjnym zarabiającym na reklamach nie opłaca się filtrować treści przed publikacją. Potencjalnie każda z nich może przyciągnąć uwagę odbiorców, a wiele mało popularnych treści może generować większe przychody niż niewiele tych najpopularniejszych. Dlatego mechanizmy filtrowania treści i nadawania im znaczenia ulegają zmianie. Dzieje się to już nie w redakcji przed publikacją, ale coraz częściej po publikacji, przede wszystkim w serwisach społecznościowych, gdzie użytkownicy polecają sobie wzajemnie treści, społecznie ustalając ich istotność i wartość. Przedstawione wyniki badań empirycznych potwierdzają, że to właśnie czynności związane z docieraniem do informacji i jej filtrowaniem są podstawowymi sposobami korzystania z serwisów społecznościowych. Konsekwencją zmian w zakresie selekcji i dystrybucji informacji jest malejąca rola redakcji w kształtowaniu agendy.
    This article shows that online news services are no longer motivated to filter out content before publication. Potentially, any piece of content can attract the attention of the audience, therefore is worth publishing. Moreover, large number of unpopular items can generate much more revenue than the small number of the most popular ones. Thus, the mechanisms of how the content is distributed and how its salience is determined are changing. This is done not by the editors before publication, but more often after the publication, on social networking sites where users recommend content to each other, socially determining its relevance and importance. The results of World Internet Project research conducted in Poland confi rms that social networking sites are used primarily as a way to access content on the web and to filter information for other users. As a result of the changes in selection and distribution of information the role of online media editors in setting the agenda is decreasing.

    Increasing popularity and dynamic expansion of online newspapers creates a need for an in-depth analysis of online press, genre and discourse properties of online news in particular. The aim of the following analysis is to investigate genre characteristics of a newly developed news structure – a news abstract. The analysis examines the basic conventions concerning the purpose, form and content of these text types. The study encompasses news abstracts published on the websites of leading British, German and Polish newspapers. The inclusion of websites of culturally distinct newspapers was designed to evaluate the degree of universality and internationalization of the structure.

    Mechanizmy leksykalno-pragmatyczne w nagłówkach elektronicznej prasy sportowej Artykuł stanowi analizę mechanizmów leksykalno-pragmatycznych oraz zjawisk pochodnych, jakie można zaobserwować w nagłówkach elektronicznej prasy sportowej. Analiza została przeprowadzona na tematycznym korpusie 320 nagłówków zebranych na kilku portalach sportowych: madryckich, katalońskich i polskim. Ocena wydarzeń, zwłaszcza sukcesów i porażek dwóch wielkich klubów, Realu Madryt i FC Barcelony, jest często różna i subiektywna, w zależności od tego, czy opisuje je dziennik madrycki, czy barceloński. Polski portal przedstawia zdarzenia w sposób bardziej obiektywny, neutralny i zdystansowany. Jedną ze strategii dyskursywnych, wykorzystywanych częściej przez dzienniki katalońskie, jest skierowanie uwagi czytelnika na aspekty, które nie są centralną częścią wiadomości. Różnice pomiędzy prasą ze stolicy Hiszpanii a prasą katalońską wyrażają się również w formalnym i semantycznym typie nagłówka oraz w środkach językowych najczęściej w nich stosowanych.   Recursos léxico-pragmáticos en los titulares de la prensa deportiva digital El presente texto constituye un análisis léxico formal y semántico-pragmático de los titulares digitales censados en los más grandes periódicos deportivos madirleños y catalanes. Con este fin se ha elaborado un corpus temático monolingüe, manualmente anotado, y los ejemplos censados en un portal digital polaco funcionan en calidad de tertium comparationis. Entre los medios digitales madrileños y catalanes se observan notables diferencias en cuanto a la presentación de los acontecimientos deportivos protagonizados por clubes pertenecientes a campos rivales. En cambio, el medio polaco adopta una postura objetiva aportando, en función de las circunstancias, una valoración objetiva, negativa, positiva o neutra de los acontecimientos deportivos. Una de las estratagemas discursivas que se usa con frecuencia a fin de disminuir el valor de los éxitos deportivos del campo ajeno consiste en focalizar la atención del lector en los eventos y personajes del segundo plano en detrimento del mero contenido de la noticia. Este fenómeno va relacionado con un hecho muy relevante en el plano lingüístico que diferencia la prensa catalana y la madrileña: predilección por un tipo de titular concreto o recursos formales empleados con más frecuencia.
    El presente texto constituye un análisis léxico formal y semántico-pragmático de los titulares digitales censados en los más grandes periódicos deportivos madirleños y catalanes. Con este fin se ha elaborado un corpus temático monolingüe, manualmente anotado, y los ejemplos censados en un portal digital polaco funcionan en calidad de tertium comparationis. Entre los medios digitales madrileños y catalanes se observan notables diferencias en cuanto a la presentación de los acontecimientos deportivos protagonizados por clubes pertenecientes a campos rivales. En cambio, el medio polaco adopta una postura objetiva aportando, en función de las circunstancias, una valoración objetiva, negativa, positiva o neutra de los acontecimientos deportivos. Una de las estratagemas discursivas que se usa con frecuencia a fin de disminuir el valor de los éxitos deportivos del campo ajeno consiste en focalizar la atención del lector en los eventos y personajes del segundo plano en detrimento del mero contenido de la noticia. Este fenómeno va relacionado con un hecho muy relevante en el plano lingüístico que diferencia la prensa catalana y la madrileña: predilección por un tipo de titular concreto o recursos formales empleados con más frecuencia.
    This paper investigates the headlines in a sports news comparable corpus from a lexical, semantic and pragmatic point of view. The corpus contains articles taken from the leading online sports newspapers from Madrid and Barcelona. A Polish sports website has been used as tertium comparationis. A detailed corpus-based analysis has led to some important conclusions. First of all, we have noticed a significant difference between the Catalan and Madrilenian headlines in the way featured events involving two main rival football clubs, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, are presented and assessed. Unlike its Spanish counterparts, the Polish website seems to take a more objective and neutral stance on the same facts. A frequently used strategy, in particular by the Catalan newspaper, consists of focusing the readers’ attention on less relevant characters and events. This tendency may be related to other features, such as a marked preference for a semantic and formal type of headline on both the Madrilenian and Catalan websites, and certain formal and lexical measures which they adopt more often.

    Opis:
    The immensity of the exposed news online has given everybody the chance to manipulate information; and so, confusion and misinformation transpire, and the evaluation of credibility and trustworthiness becomes intricate. In spite of the continuous efforts of various academic institutions to provide a wide array of databases and resources among learners – still the current phenomenon called fake news has become incessantly dispersing. This research has explored university students’ dis/engagement from/to fake news. Using quantitative measures, it was revealed that the students had used online platforms for communication processes and for retrieving and allocating information. Moreover, upon text mining the student responses, nearly all defined fake news as satirical with misleading and fabricated content which tends to deceive and do harm to people. Students also have a moderate view in which they scarcely believe that as they disengage from fake news, they will develop their communication skills since they learn how to fact check information before sharing it. Lastly, the content analysis has revealed various themes divulging students’ experiences of fake news and its implications to the curriculum.
