Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a revolution in education. As learner, teacher presence and teaching method no longer depend upon time and distance, class enrolment also becomes open for more of the populace regardless of educational background. The goal of the research is to design a learning model that is in accordance with dimensions that are compatible with the MOOC rules. Literature review, a questionnaire, and interviews were used to define dimensions based on the MOOC rules. The research resulted in a model that is in accordance with MOOC categories and dimensions based on input from both users and developers.

Many professional development opportunities for faculty are offered in a traditional, face-to-face learning environment. However, similarly as virtual/online learning environments may be an answer to the various student’s needs, it may also apply to fulfilling teaching and learning needs of the faculty. This paper provides insights regarding three different types of professional development for faculty in a virtual/online environment implemented at a two-year, small college in the Midwest of the United States. Because we look for how to engage and deepen student learning in online, blended, and/or distance education and training environments, our professional development should mimic and model best practices of developing and learning in these unique environments (Anderson, Krathwohl, & Bloom, 2001). Although, traditional face-to-face professional development for faculty may still be in use, this paper provides guidelines and suggestions considering developing virtual/online professional development for faculty, in order to offer them additional learning opportunities.

The article aims to discuss current research trends in the field of Distance Learning (DL). It consists of the following parts: (1) the definitions and characteristics of DL; (2) current directions of research in the field of DL, among others: measuring transactional distance in Web-Based Learning Environments, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in DL, development of learning content and the task for MOOCs, effects of online course efficiency perceptions on Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) measures, new technologies for the DL, the use of metacognitive and affective model Self-Regulated Learning (MASRL), questionnaire (Constructivist Learning on a Scale Higher Settings of Education [CLHES]) as a method of research of constructivist learning environment in higher education, Transactional Distance (TD) theory in DL and online community culture; (3) summary and conclusions with a particular focus on the use of DL methods in higher education. The article is based on the study of literature registered in the databases ERIC, LISA, and LISTA.
Celem artykułu jest omówienie aktualnych trendów i badań w dziedzinie kształcenia na odległość (DL). Artykuł składa się z następujących części: (1) definicje i cechy DL; (2) współczesne kierunki badań w dziedzinie DL, w tym między innymi: mierzenie odległości transakcyjnej w internetowych środowiskach nauczania, uczenie się oparte na problemach (PBL) w DL, opracowywanie treści edukacyjnych i zadania dla MOOC, efekty wydajności kursów online, postrzeganie miar oceny nauczania przez uczniów (SET), nowe technologie dla DL, stosowanie metapoznawczego i afektywnego modelu samoregulowanego uczenia się (MASRL), kwestionariusz konstruktywistycznego uczenia się (CLHES) jako metoda badań konstruktywistycznego środowiska uczenia się w szkolnictwie wyższym, teoria odległości transakcyjnej (TD) w kulturze DL społeczności internetowej; (3) podsumowanie i wnioski ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zastosowania metod DL w szkolnictwie wyższym. Metoda badawcza: badanie literatury zarejestrowanej w bazach danych ERIC, LISA, LISTA.

This article reports on the development and validation of a tool for characterizing the pedagogical approaches taken in MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The Assessing MOOC Pedagogies (AMP) tool characterizes MOOC pedagogical approaches on ten dimensions. Preliminary testing on 17 different MOOCs demonstrated >80% inter-reliability and the facility of the measure to distinguish differing pedagogical patterns. The patterns distinguished crossed content areas and seemed to be related to what Sfard1 termed metaphors for learning - acquisition vs. participation.

Thanks to the growth and development of online programs, higher education is more accessible to prospective students regardless of where they live. The sophistication of online courses has grown over the past decade largely due to the abundance of research. Ongoing research propelled the development of the Garrison, Anderson, and Archer Community of Inquiry (CoI) Model which described the interaction or relationship among teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence when designing and teaching online courses. The author of the article used CoI Model and Survey to assess student perceptions of teaching, cognitive, and social presence as well as their perceptions of the effectiveness of individual online classes. The article presents the survey results.

This paper presents an overview of the latest developments in electronic learning and teaching methods and tools brought about by digital transformations aimed at making education more efficient and effective. A set of general and specific research methods was used to conduct the study, in particular bibliographical and descriptive, chronological, specification, analysis, systematisation and classification, observation, survey and expert interviews, abstraction, analogy and comparison, comparative, modelling, forecasting and argumentation, and logical generalisation. The authors describe their approach to structural organisation of the novel e-learning ecosystem and single out its key components, including technology, learning contexts, and learning outcomes, as well as a set of secondary external factors that determine the quality and effectiveness of education when digitalised. This paper explores characteristics and features of e-learning such as customisation, autonomy, and interactivity with a focus on micro-learning, and presents the findings of an analysis of the most popular open educational resources (OERs), massive open online courses (MOOCs), and online learning platforms, highlighting their major advantages and disadvantages.

The rapid explosion in technology is unpredictable and very drastic such that it has conquered every aspect and areas of human life. There is such areas where technology has not yet reached. Education being an area that has direct impact on the society is nowhere an exception. Hence, as a teacher or teacher educator one has to update his knowledge and skills in using technology, especially ICT, as the classrooms are being dominated by smart classrooms. They now have to learn how to cope with these technological advancements and innovative approaches in their classrooms Uses of technology in the professional development and capacity building of teachers may be defined in two folds; that is technology for professional development and professional development for efficient use of technology in teaching learning process. When technology develops in a very drastic speed, it is the duty of the teacher to update himself on various areas of ICT that can be used in the classroom transaction. Various online programs and online learning are being introduced that can be used by teachers in the classroom. Hence, the teacher has to update his knowledge and skills through various professional development programmes. The administration of schools has to provide such platform to teachers to undergo such training to cope up with current development and changes in technology. Technology can be used not only as an information management tool, but also as a means of reaching students of diverse backgrounds in a way professionally sound (Torres, 2006). Hence, technology can be seen having implications for classroom learning as well as in reaching students of the disadvantaged group provided the availability of technology in their areas. The use of technology can assess the quality of their papers or articles using technology. It helps to identify aspects such as the number of times cited, plagiarism etc. These educational software has been introduced in order to maximize quality of all papers being published. In the present paper, we have discussed the linkage of technology with special focus on ICT and Professional development of teachers. Focus of this paper is on and around E- Resources, Integration of Advanced Technology in Teacher Training, citations index, and impact of research publication in the public domain.

The paper presents research results of the two-year pedagogical experiment comparing test scores in three subjects (Database Systems, Management, IT English) taught either in the ICT-supported way, or in the traditional face-to-face way at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic. The main research objective was to find out whether ICT contribute to increasing learners’ knowledge and consequently to forming key competences. Didactic tests as the main tool were used within the pedagogical experiment which followed the “pre-test - instruction - post-test - post-test2” structure. The research sample included 687 respondents. Obtained results proved there were no statistically significant differences in learners’ knowledge in both approaches to instruction. The results were discussed from two important points of view: (1) teachers’ and learners’ ability to use the potential of ICT in teaching/learning and (2) the role of teaching/learning styles in the ICT-supported instruction.

Since education, including university courses, has been transfered to online system we have faced the entirely new unprecedented challenge. It is true that computer and the internet based technology has been widely adopted for academic purposes. There have been courses online offered long before the lockdown and there have been conferences held via internet enabling wide audience to communicate freely. Nowadays, however, since pandemic restriction have been introduced, only full online classes allow to conduct academic work. We suffer because we, teachers and students, are experiencing difficulties in pursuing academic tasks. After a few months we come to the conclusion that online education and traditional forms of teaching cannot be equated. This paper attempts to identify the main issues which accompany the process, such as the absence of social life or depravity of personal relations. In analysis from a philosophical point of view, of philosophy of education of professor Mieczysław Gogacz, we ask what is the essence of the system called online teaching and to what extend it modifies personal dimension and relations proper to the process of educating. We gather both, positive and negative aspects, and show that numerous disturbing consequences of the online method in a longer perspective may render education ineffective. We conclude that it has already been observed that remote system has plunged learning and academic life. Hence, in we suggest we suggest that classical school of teaching, especially in the field of philosophy, should be maintained as incomparably reliable and comprehensive.

This article deals with the possibilities of various virtual teaching tools that can be used to maintain students’ engagement in the process of acquiring knowledge in the context of remote teaching. It discusses such teaching methods as projects and gamification and shows which and how apps can be used to conduct webinars. In the subsequent part of the article, ways of creating interactive worksheets are presented along with the results of a questionnaire concerning the use of BookWidgets as an assessment tool. The final part of the article considers a webinar on interpreting that was part of a series of webinars conducted at AHE in Lodz by the author. The article concludes by encouraging lecturers to take advantage of the Internet to help their students acquire and revise knowledge.
Tematem artykułu jest pokazanie możliwości wykorzystania różnych wirtualnych aplikacji w celu utrzymania zaangażowania studentów w żmudny proces zdobywania wiedzy w systemie edukacji zdalnej. Wspomina się w nim o takich metodach pracy, jak projekty czy grywalizacja, pokazując jednocześnie, jakie konkretnie narzędzia i w jaki sposób można w ich kontekście zastosować. W dalszej części tekstu przedstawiono sposoby tworzenia interaktywnych kart pracy oraz wyniki badań na temat zastosowania aplikacji BookWidgets do oceniania. Przykład zaplanowanego w oparciu o metody aktywizujące webinarium z tłumaczeń ustnych, jakie przeprowadzane były przez autorkę artykułu w Akademii Humanistyczno-Ekonomicznej w Łodzi w roku akademickim 2019/2020, stanowi kolejną część artykułu, który zakończono zachęceniem nauczycieli akademickich i nauczycielek akademickich do sięgania po bogate źródło, jakim jest internet dający możliwość przekazywania, powtarzania i utrwalania wiedzy.

Massive open online courses, MOOCs, are a recent phenomenon that has achieved a tremendous media attention in the online education world. Certainly, the MOOCs have brought interest among the learners (given the number of enrolled learners in these courses). Nevertheless, the rate of dropout in MOOCs is very important. Indeed, a limited number of the enrolled learners complete their courses. The high dropout rate in MOOCs is perceived by the educator’s community as one of the most important problems. It’s related to diverse aspects, such as the motivation of the learners, their expectations and the lack of social interactions. However, to solve this problem, it is necessary to predict the likelihood of dropout in order to propose an appropriate intervention for learners at-risk of dropping out their courses. In this paper, we present a dropout predictor model based on a neural network algorithm and sentiment analysis feature that used the clickstream log and forum post data. Our model achieved an average AUC (Area under the curve) as high as 90% and the model with the feature of the learner’s sentiments analysis attained average increase in AUC of 0.5%.

Znaczenie edukacji, szkoleń i podnoszenia świadomości zagadnień cyberbezpieczeństwa jest dziś, w erze społeczeństwa informacyjnego powszechnie uznane. W ostatnich latach w Unii Europejskiej pojawiło się wiele nowych inicjatyw związanych między innymi z rozwijaniem programów uniwersyteckich, przygotowywaniem specjalistycznych i profilowanych szkoleń, uruchamianiem masowych otwartych kursów online, a także badaniami opinii publicznej oraz ekspertów. Odbyła się również niezwykle interesująca debata dotycząca skuteczności i zasadności kształcenia zasad cyberbezpieczeństwa oraz przeprowadzono ankietę w instytucjach edukacyjnych dotyczących cech wzorcowego kursu w tej dziedzinie. W artykule przedstawiono te inicjatywy i związane z nimi wyzwania, a także trendy i perspektywiczne kierunki rozwoju nauczania zagadnień cyberbezpieczeństwa.
Today, in the era of information society, the importance of cybersecurity education, training and awareness is widely acknowledged. In recent years many new initiatives have been taken in the European Union related to the development of academic programmes, creation of specialised, dedicated trainings, launching massive open online courses (MOOCs) as well as conducting stocktaking studies. There was a very interesting debate about the value of security awareness raising and trainings which provided strong arguments supporting inclusion of educative actions into organisations’ cybersecurity strategies. These actions, for instance, significantly improve security level in small and medium enterprises. The indispensable role of user education was confirmed in the European Digital Agenda and cyber security strategies of member states. Relevant courses need to be included into common curricula, not only the programmes for students of information technologies as it is today. A promising direction in popularisation of cybersecurity principles are Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). Although generally they expose a low level of completion, they became successful for participants with high self-motivation and previous learning experiences. A survey in educational institutions regarding the characteristics of a model cybersecurity course show that primarily it should rely on practical exercises based on role-playing and simulations, performed in teams. The content of such course should include real-life examples, privacy issues and risks inherent to the use of new technologies, as well as multidisciplinary questions. The paper presents cybersecurity education initiatives together with challenges related to them, and the trends and perspectives in cybersecurity education.

The present paper is aimed at sharing practical experience of organizing active interaction with Maritime English students of remote groups in conditions of permanent online teaching and learning processes. The authors explore various strategies that can be integrated into the design and development of tailored e-books and tutors’ e-courses to foster high level of Maritime English students’ online interaction. In addition, the use of modern digital tools for the successful running of e-books and e-courses is discussed as well as the role these tools play in promoting atmosphere of interaction to allow students be deeply engaged into learning activities and contribute to genuine discussion. A few aspects considered with regard to the process of designing e-books and e-courses are accessibility of learning materials, integration of design elements, and development of students’ online community, encouraging discussions and application of effective assessment methods. The study examines their experience of teaching Maritime English using Moodle and Zoom platforms. The findings of the study can be useful for educators to promote more interactive online learning.

W artykule przedstawiono historię rozwoju oraz formy i sposoby stosowania Aplikacji Matematycznych GeoGebra w dydaktyce akademickiej zarówno podczas zajęć oraz egzaminów jak i podczas samodzielnej pracy studentów. Omówiono także możliwości platformy GeoGebra w zakresie tworzenia otwartych kursów online, udostępniania ich za pomocą bezpłatnej chmury GeoGebra Materials oraz współpracy z innymi użytkownikami w ramach GeoGebra Groups – uproszczonego LMS, który pozwala prowadzić nauczanie w klasach wirtualnych.
The article presents the history of development, as well as forms and methods of using GeoGebra Mathematics Applications in academic didactics, not only during classes and exams, but also during individual student work. The possibilities of the GeoGebra platform in creating open online courses, making them available using the free GeoGebra Materials cloud and cooperation with other users within GeoGebra Groups – a simplified LMS that allows teaching in virtual classes are also discussed.
