Opis:
Purpose: Chemotherapy, which is widely used in cancer treatment in children, may cause various side effects, including impaired taste perception, thus the main aim of the presented study was a subjective assessment of changes in taste perception and dietary habits among children undergoing oncological treatment. Materials and methods: In the present study, 41 hospitalized children were examined (mean age 11.0 ± 5.1 years). Anthropometric measurements were made, and diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Results: For 85.4% of the patients, the current treatment was chemotherapy. The average Body Mass Index value was 17.8 kg/m2 . 68.3% of children declared a change in taste preferences preferred tastes were spicy (39.3%) and sour (35.7%). Determination of the way of eating showed a significant reduction in the consumption of bread, milk and dairy products, poultry, meat, fish, potatoes, vegetables, and a particularly pronounced decrease in the frequency of sweets consumption. Conclusions: Oncological treatment changes the subjective taste perception of children in favor of intense flavors, and the process of oncological treatment, especially the use of chemotherapy, affects the way of eating

Opis:
Nowotwory regionu głowy i szyi to zmiany chorobowe w obrębie kompleksu ustno-twarzowego. Strukturalne i czynnościowe zaburzenia poszczególnych narządów orogardła powodują trudności w oddychaniu, połykaniu i w wymowie.
Tumors of the head and neck region are lesions within the orofacial complex. Structural and functional disturbances of individual oropharyngeal structures cause difficulties in breathing, swallowing and pronunciation. The aim of the article is to discuss speech disorders of the head and neck regions in oncological patients after radical reconstructive surgery. The type of a linguistic disorder depends on the severity of the neoplastic disease, the extent of the postoperative loss and individual patient compensation skills. The greatest deviations from the norm occur during the implementation of sounds such as [k, g, l] and the smallest happen during phonation of vowels. The primary aim of speech therapy is to improve such skills as swallowing, articulation, phonation and communication of the patient with the environment. Re-education of the primary and secondary functions in the case of oncological patients after reconstructive surgery in the craniofacial region makes modern speech therapy an integral part of the oncological treatment.

Opis:
One of the causes behind the low recovery rate among oncological patients is late diagnosis and delayed treatment. To a large extent it stems from the limited access to standard diagnostic methods, and from the extended waiting time for medical treatment. Delayed diagnosis or commencement of therapy might be patient-related, doctor-related, or might have more to do with the organization of the healthcare system. It would appear that the greatest problem in Poland is the system-related delay. Studies have demonstrated that delayed treatment might have a significant impact on patient survival. Poor health education of the society, lack of comprehensive treatment, and queues for medical care that patients come across virtually at all treatment stages result in neoplastic diseases being diagnosed in their advanced stage only, with delayed treatment lowering the patients’ chances of complete recovery.

Opis:
The present study examines the research output and citation analysis in the field of Oncology, a branch of medical science which deals with the study and treatment of tumours, what we commonly know as cancer. Cancer as a disease is not confined to a particular region or a country, but is a global phenomenon and is still beyond the complete understanding and control of medicos. Research in the field of biomedical sciences in general and oncology is particular is undertaken at global level with almost each country contributing its bit in understating and control of disease. The study makes an empirical assessment of the research output and growth in the field of oncology at continental level for the period 2003-2012 and evaluates the aspects like research growth, citation analysis, h-Index etc. Data for the present study has been retrieved from the SCImago Journal and Country Ranking, which is totally based on the SCOPUS data source. Findings: - A total of 310593 research papers were published across six continents of the world during the period 2003-2012. Europe emerged the largest continent with its publication share of (124598, 40.11 %). Europe is followed by North America with its share percentage of (102897, 33.12 %) and Asia with (70555, 22.71 %). The contribution of Oceania, South America & Africa to the world oncology research is not that encouraging, as such there is greater need to promote oncology research in these continents. African contribution to global oncology research during the period remained (2215, 0.71 %), South American (3009, 0.96 %) and Oceania contributed (7319, 2.35 %). Oncology research publication on average during the period of study grew annually at 8.15 %, while as at continental level Africa registered highest annual publication growth of 19.08 %. North America and Europe are the only continents which recorded publication's growth below the average global growth.
