Opis:
The paper touches upon the phenomenon of interchanging consonants c and č in the text of the full lectionary from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts in Moscow. The research aims at establishing orthographical rules which were followed by the writers of the book, as well as at defining the number and categories of mistakes which were made by the writers while breaking the aforementioned rules. The research findings amount to a linguistic confirmation of the northern origins of the Gospel Book Tip-7. Moreover, the results are the basis for assessing the level of the writers’ professionalism and for comparing this old text with other manuscripts created in similar locations and times.

This year’s conference was organised by the Inventory Team of the Cathedral Library in Gniezno, attached to the Institute of History at Adam Mickiewicz University, and by the Poznań branch of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts. The seventeen conference papers presented in this reporting article cover a variety of the problems and issues raised during the conference, encompassing a number of diverse aspects of old and rare books; this year with a slightly higher proportion of papers on book production and binding techniques and tegumentology. The conference was highly appraised for its scientific aptitude, while much appreciation was given to the overall high level of presentations given by the participants and the sheer number of participants, though none of the them represented an academic centre that was strictly involved in research on the history and science of books as physical objects, representing different research centres in Poland and abroad (Kraków, Lublin, Mińsk, Poznań, Słupsk, Tel Awiw, Toruń and Warszawa). The conference was accompanied by an exhibition presenting the special collections of the library of the PSFA (prepared by Michał Bartoszak and Wojciech Graś) documenting the history of the expansion of the resources of this library in the contexts of the donations made by its most notable donators.

This article is devoted to a special kind of errors made by the scribes of the Old Russian Books of the Gospels. These are erroneous wordings which create the impression of being correct, since they constitute existing words, in wording and form, similar to the original ones, but which nevertheless alter the meaning of the text. The article presents mechanisms of occurrence of such errors and also shows that modification of meaning caused by erroneous writing could have different degree. The contribution of the writer’s consciousness to the development of error was taken into account in the research. An attempt was made to use the results of the analysis of errors of a given type to formulate conclusions regarding the way the scribe works and his degree of professionalism.

The 11th September 2003 was quite an ordinary working day in the Royal Library – at least for the first few hours in the morning. At approximately 11.00 a.m., however, I was interrupted by the telephone. A polite lady introduced herself as the rare book specialist from Christie’s in London. From a consignor she had received the following work for sale: Propalladia de Bartholome de Torres Naharro.Dirigida... Napoles: por Ioan Pasqueto de Sallo, Naples 1517. Her investigation of a critical edition of Torres Naharro’s works from 1943 had established that only two copies of this particular work were known to exist. One incomplete copy in the National Library of Spain in Madrid, and one complete copy in The Royal Library in Copenhagen. This puzzled the keeper of books at the auction company, and she was keen to know whether she had a historic sensation in her hands or simply a stolen book.

Opis:
The conducted exegesis of some particular verses from the Septuagint indicates that two initial covenants made between a representative of the chosen nation with a Gentile party (Abraham and Solomon) did not breach the obligations resulting from the Law of Moses. The theological portrait of Abraham in the Book of Genesis captures an unambiguous evaluation of his conduct in accordance with the Law although the Law itself appeared considerably later when Moses lived. The pact between Solomon and Hiram deserves a similar evaluation. However, the later covenants between the kings of Israel and Judah with Gentile rulers deserve an extremely negative evaluation. Although they did not formally violate the Mosaic prohibitions, they were evaluated as a violation of trust in the Lord as He was the only Partner of the covenant between Himself and the Israelites. Such an interpretation is possible especially in light of Deut 7:6 which accentuates the uniqueness of Israel as a nation chosen by God from among other nations. And because this selection of Israel was done on the foundation of the covenant made on the Mount Sinai, it should be a one-of-a-kind covenant that should not be replaced with another pact signed with a human being, and let alone a Gentile. In all of the cases above, starting from King Asa and ending with Archpriest Jonathan, there was a true violation of the rule whereby the Lord was the only Partner of the covenant with His people. Thus, each of the analyzed treatises met with valid criticism both from a prophet and the inspired author. It is difficult to treat these violations as a major breach of the faith of Israel because of the established diplomatic relations. However, it was the rule of God’s uniqueness as a foundation for any sphere in the life of the chosen people that was violated. It included the political sphere which should not be excluded from the chosen people’s faith.

In the discussed verse 1 Macc 3:21, there are two main motivations for the struggle of Judah Maccabee and his compatriots against the Seleucid army of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The text combines the struggle for the physical existence of Jews with the defence of native customs established on the foundations of the Mosaic Law. There is a clear indissolubility of life and faith in the Jewish consciousness. One cannot survive without one’s own religious tradition, which is the basis of national identity. This article aims to explore the meaning of the Greek adjective νόμιμος, -η, -ον, appearing in the analysed verse of the the book, as substantive (τὸ) νόμιμον, "custom" especially in the plural τὰ νόμιμα, "customs, usages, norms". This term will be presented from a theological and historical perspective in search of an answer to the question about its content and implied meaning in the speech of Judah to his countrymen before the beginning of the battle of Beth-Choron. This content will be both the justification of the struggle undertaken and its importance in the history of Israel in the middle of the 2nd century BC.

The article describes the specificity of the changes that took place in the process of dissemination of double negation, typical for Slavic languages, visible in the Ruthenian recension of Church Slavonic texts. The reflections on the achievements in the field are enriched with the results of research on the text of Gospel No. 7 from the collection of the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA F. 381. Op. 1 Unit hr 7), which has not been analyzed so far in terms of the issues raised. Nearly three hundred negative structures were subjected to observations. In order to determine the number of single negation cases in relation to double negation the main focus was on structures such as: (1) ni Pron + V, (2) ni Pron + ne V oraz (3) ne V + ni Pron. It was determined, among other things, that their use was influenced by both the literature tradition and live language with elements of the northern dialect of the East Slavonic. On the other hand, the analysis of the negative structures preceding homogeneous parts of the sentence revealed the tendency, manifested onthe leaves of the monument, to transform towards the norm of the contemporary Russian language.

Old Bulgarian translation

Opis:
Some specific lexemes in the Old Bulgarian translation of Hippolytus of Rome’s Commentaries on the Book of Prophet DanielThe object of the current research is Talkovanie na Kniga na propok Daniil – the Slavonic version of the Commentaries on the Book of Prophet Daniel (Commentarii in Danielem, CPG 1873) by Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170–235), the earliest and most profound commentaries on this Old Testament book. They were written round 204 and their translation into Old Bulgarian can be counted among the earliest works of Bulgarian literature. The time of the Commentaries’ translation is under discussion, its dating ranging from the last decades of the ninth to the middle of the tenth century. Some linguistic facts of the Commentaries have sporadically been compared with the partial translation of the Book of the Prophet Daniel, included in the Prophetologion. Also, some comparisons have been made between the Slavonic translation of the Commentaries and the so-called Talkovni proroci – a translation of Old Testament books of prophets with commentaries. The analysis is based on a 1519 manuscript of the Commentaries (No. 486 from the Volokolamsk Collection, Russian State Library, Moscow), which follows the tradition of the earlier copies and most profoundly keeps the content of the Commentaries. In addition to morphological particularities, in the text there are many lexical idiosyncrasies, which can facilitate the dating and localization of the translation. Among these lexical markers can be singled out which show more interesting data. Many lexemes can be found which are particular to the early written codices and testify to the antiquity of the translation. For instance, some specific lexemes match with words, used in the Codex Suprasliensis and the First Miscellany of Tsar Simeon (Izbornik of 1073), which shows that the Commentaries are one of the earliest translated works of the Old Bulgarian literature.

Opis:
The essay is excerpted from a chapter of a book that is currently being written by the author. The working title of the book is Spacery po kościołach rzymskich [Walks through historical churches and temples of Rome] (Wydawnictwo Zeszytów Literackich). The present essay aims at discussing the specific character of the Christian church architecture of the city of Rome that constitutes nodes of a network that has been developing throughout one and a half millennia. Each of the chapters of the book is centered around a particular walk of the town that includes on its way the described churches. The walks cover virtually the whole of the old town and some of the adjacent palaces. The adopted method of presentation is purely personal and has a character of a “Roman diary” — to some extent, the author has been inspired by Promenades das Rome by Stendhal. The diary is, however, a particular guide book on the town for those who want to experience something else that the offer presented by standard guidebooks. Notwithstanding it subjective angle, the book does not interfere in passing the essential historical and artistic knowledge to the reader. Rome appears here to be a singular place, as a personification of one of the most important stages of Western civilization.

The Book of Jonah is remarkably theocentric. The events underline that JHWH is truly the only God, because he has the power of over natural elements, flora and fauna and destiny of other nations who are subordinate to Him even far from the homeland of the Israelites. JHWH Himself is the origin of all creation and will lead it to its final fulfillment. There are no other gods, and JHWH alone determines what is sinful, and JHWH Himself can show mercy in response to people’s repentance. God thus pictured is the only God, full of mercy. In His infinite mercy, he is not exclusively concerned with the Jewish nation. On the contrary, JHWH sends the Prophet to the pagans and in doing so he offers His mercy and redemption to them, which is undoubtedly extraordinary in the Bible.

Moreover, the author attempts to find the Gospel Book’s place in the classification of full lectionaries. In the course of the analysis it is stated that the text has various typological features. Despite the fact that in some elements it resembles the South Slavonic Miroslav Gospel, it belongs to the most common type of full lectionaries in Ruthenia among which the leading role is played by Mstislav Gospel. Furthermore, the manuscript reflects the peculiar features of Milata Gospel, which makes it a part of the class of manuscripts represented by this old text of Novgorod.

References to music are common elements of prophetic literature, especiallyin the Books of the Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel), indirectly indicating writers’ interests in that form of art. There are five musical terms mentioned in the Book of Amos: šôpär - horn (Am 2,2; 3,6), qînäh - lamentation, dirge (Am 5,1; 8,10), nëbel - probably lyre (Am 5,23; 6,5), šîr - song (Am 5,23; 6,5; 8,3.10) and Külê-šîr - instruments of song, string instruments (Am 6,5). The purpose of the article is to interpret the musical motifs excluding two related to singing in the biblical and archeomusicological contexts. Am 5,23 and 6,5 can be linked with real musical performance practices in sacred and secular environments in ancient Israel/Palestine. Am 2,2 confirms how important part in the Near East played signal aerophones, whereas Am 3,6 reflects characteristic aspects of Amos’s vocational narrative. The figure of Kind David in Am 6,5 is analyzed in the context of the origin of musical instruments. The comparative materials for Am 2,2; 3,6; 5,23 and 6,5 are mainly the prophetic Books.

Opis:
On traces of the Methodian translation of the Book of JeremiahThe article presents preliminary observations concerning the excerpts from the Book of Jeremiah in the Archival Chronograph (fifteenth century) and Vilno Chronograph (sixteenth century). According to their content, localization and linguistic characteristics, they fall into two main groups. Some of the excerpts are identified as chapters from the Slavic Prophetologion and are connected with the translation made by Cyril and Methodius. Other chapters, which are not included in the Cyrillic and Glagolitic liturgical books, belong to the first, probably untranslated or now lost, part of the Book of Jeremiah. The excerpts that cannot be found in the Prophetologion also have archaic linguistic bases, connected to the translational techniques characteristic of the Cyrillo-Methodian translations, and differ considerably from the translation with commentaries that was made in Preslav. Whether these excerpts belong to an independent earlier translation, made by Methodius and his co-workers, or they are extracts from encyclopedic miscellany, they provide valuable material for the study of this biblical book and of the Old Bulgarian translation of the Old Testament. Cyryla i Metodego.

Opis:
It is commonly known that the Bible does not contain systematic hamartiology or satanology. Also the Biblical demonology depends on the historical development and the influence of neighbouring countries’ relig-ions.This article’s aim is to analyse the etymology and meaning of the con-cept of satan in the most popular texts directly referring to the figure of Satan (Book of Job 6 and Book of Zechariah 3).The author tried to confront fragments from the Job and Zechariah with the texts that were (re)interpreted satanologically in the intertestamental period and by early Christian theology (Isaiah 14,12-14 and Ezekiel 28,12-15) and also with the narration contained in Genesis 3, which is considered the key text concerning the so-called „fall” of man in the Christian theology. The analysis was completed by references to intertestamental texts.A text that proved particularly helpful in the reconstruction of the aetiology of sin was Adam's Repentance, known under various titles thanks to its copies in various languages, which represents the so-called Adamite tradition in theology (hamartiology). A number of similarities between the syncretic Biblical hamartiology and Adam’s Repentance were shown (among others, the common nature of the first sin committed by Satan and the first sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden).
