Opis:
Skażenia mikrobiologiczne związane z żywnością stanowią bardzo istotny problem we współczesnym świecie. Pomimo zaawansowanych technik detekcji mikroorganizmów chorobotwórczych w żywności oraz postępów w leczeniu chorób spowodowanych przez te drobnoustroje, problem nadal pozostaje aktualny. W pracy opisano potencjalne zagrożenia dla ludzi związane z występowaniem werotoksycznych Escherichia coli w żywności. Przedstawiono także charakterystykę serotypu E. coli O104:H4, który był przyczyną dużego ogniska zatrucia, które stwierdzono w Niemczech w 2011 roku. Omówiono występowanie E. coli O104:H4 u ludzi, zwierząt i w żywności oraz występowanie ognisk zatruć spowodowanych przez tę grupę mikroorganizmów.
Microbiological contaminations of food constitute a very significant problem in the modern world. Despite the advanced techniques for detection of pathogenic microorganisms in food and the progress in treating diseases caused by them, the problem is still relevant. In the paper, there are described potential risks to people that are associated with the occurrence of verotoxic E.coli in food. Also, the paper presents a detailed profile of the serotype of E. coli O104:H4, which was a causative agent of the large outbreak of food poisoning in Germany in 2011. The occurrence of E.coli O104:H4 in humans, animals, and foods are discussed as is the occurrence of food-borne outbreaks caused by this group of microorganisms.

Range and ecology of Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) in Mazuria focus. IV. Host specificity. During two consecutive open seasons, i.e. in the fall of 1998 and the fall of 1999, a host specificity study was conducted in the vicinity of Mikołajki. Host specificity was assessed by calculating the prevalence and mean intensity indices of infection. The total of 87 game beasts were examined, including 53 deers, 18 wild boars, 15 roe deer and 1 elk. In deer the prevalence of infection was 67.9%, with mean intensity at the level of 10.2. In wild boars the indices were 22.2% and 12.8, respectively. Dermacentor reticulatus ticks were not found in any of the examined 14 roe deer. Three adult ticks were found on the elk. Very frequent occurrence of Dermacentor reticulatus on plants in red and fallow deer pens in fenced Cervides Farm indicates that these animals are good hosts for adult forms of this tick. On pens of red deer the number of ticks caught on plants was considerable greater than on pens of fallow deer.

Opis:
The influence of day length and temperature on the activity of adult Dermacentor reticulatus was studied in two experiments. In the first one, changes in the activity of ticks kept in three aquariums were observed where the differentiating factor was day length (14, 15.5 and 17 h). In all of the three variants the activity of ticks decreased over time. The activity of ticks kept in the conditions of a 17 h day decreased the fastest; the decrease was a little slower in the conditions of a 15 h day, and in the conditions of a 14 h day it was the slowest. In the second experiment, changes in the activity of ticks kept in the conditions of a long (20 h) and short (10 h) day was observed, with temperatures differentiated between 18° and 25° C. The activity of hungry adult ticks was most limited in the conditions of a long (20 h) day and high temperatures (25°C), while it decreased somewhat more slowly in the conditions of a long day and moderate temperatures (18°C). An even slower decrease in their activity was observed when day length was reduced to 10 h; it was more marked in temperatures around 25°C than 18°C.

Opis:
In the spring and fall of three consecutive years (1997, 1998 and 1999), a study of the seasonal activity patterns in hungry adult forms of Dermacentor reticulatus was conducted on experimental sites, supplemented by field observations beyond the sites in 2000 and 2001. The studies confirmed two periods of activity (spring and fall). The ticks’ activity depended mostly on the average daily temperature of the environment, and was observed in temperatures ranging between +4°C and +13°C. Factors diminishing the ticks’ activity also included day length and relative air humidity; no active ticks were observed during days longer than 16 hours, or in average relative air humidity lower than 65%.

Opis:
During the vegetation periods of five subsequent years, ie. 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, a field study aimed at defining, the current range of Dermacentor reticulatus in the so-called Mazuria focus was conducted on an area of about 24.000 km? . The total of 68 sites covered by the study were located between the Great Mazurian Lakes District in the east and the lower Vistula valley in the west. The presence of adult forms of Dermacentor reticulatus was confirmed in 23 sites. The westernmost sites were discovered in the vicinity of Brodnica and Elblag. Both sites are located at longitude 19°20’ East.

The aim was looking for correlation between hydrolytic activity and multifocal Candida invasions in 33 lung cancer patients (LC) before treatment. Materials used in this study were pharyngeal and rectal swab, sputum, bronchial secretion and urine. Isolation and identification of fungi were performed using ID C 32 test and the hydrolytic activity using APIZYM test. Results: 1/ there were only Candida strains, especially C. albicans (78,8 %) isolated. 2/ Candida in more than one sample were present in 74%, in three or four in 27,7% of LC. 3/ Candida strains produced 17 among 19 investigated enzymes. 4/ there were statistically significant correlations between the activity of some hydrolytic enzymes and number of Candida foci observed. Conclusions: 1/ the results confirmed the influence of Candida hydrolytic activity on the course of infcction. 2/ hydrolytic enzymes activity is one of important Candida pathogenicity factors.

Opis:
The task was to establish the foci of ashworthiosis. The locations were: Białowieża Forest and Bieszczady Mountains. The wild cervides including: 52 red deer and 15 roe deer as well as domestic ruminants: 17 cattle and 18 sheep were examined parasitologically. Also, the examination was extended to neighbouring and additional areas. Contents of abomasa after multiple decantation were conserved with 2% formaldehyde. All nematodes were isolated from the contest, cleared in 70% ethanol with 5% glycerol and determinated to the species on the basis of structure of bursa copulatrix. Intensity of invasions of red deer oscillated from 3 to 296 specimens of A. sidemi and of roe deer from 42 to 545 nematodes. There were found none of domestic ruminants infected with this nematode in areas neighbouring with woods in both foci. Examinations showed that relatively new (found in 2000 year) focus of ashworthiosis in Polish part of Białowieża Forest has not dispersed yet beyond the limits of this forest complex. However, focus of ashworthiosis found in Bieszczady Mountains in 1997 year initially in Lutowiska Forest District expanded on the area of neighbouring Bieszczady forest districts: Komańcza, Cisna and Baligród and also on the area of Forest District Krasiczyn lying in Pogórze Przemyskie. So it is necessary further monitoring of status of A. sidemi infection of wild and domestic ruminants in neighbouring of both till now found foci.
