iconography of God
Opis:
Accessibility of iconography to God, iconography understood as the act of painting or sculpturing, depends on the degree of his attribute ἀπάϑεια and on the conception of his nature. The attribute ἀπάϑεια was ascribed to God by Greek philosophers. According to philological analysis ἀπάϑεια in the dimension of existence denotes not being in relation to anything; in the dimension of action – being intangible by anybody else's action, which is a consequence of the dimension of existence; and finally in the dimension of grammar – impossibility to be defined by any sentence, even syntactically active, and especially by a passive one. By ascribing to God the attribute ἀπάϑεια Greek philosophers made it impossible to make his effigies. Moreover, their God is neither anthropomorphic nor zoomorphic or, indeed, personal. However, philosophers have generally accepted God's active and forming relation towards the visible world. According to them, nature is an epiphany of God's existence, acting and attributes. It follows then that iconography could try to show God but only in the form of an allegory, symbol, conventional sign or an artistic allusion. Homer's religion encouraged art, especially sculpture, to present gods' and goddesses' effigies anthropomorphically. However, these effigies should show gods as ideally beautiful, young and full of dignity. In the Bible God is a person and man is his visible image. Moreover, although the Bible contains the implicit notion of ἀπάϑεια as God's attribute, with its anthropomorphic pronouncements about God and with its whole contents it shows that God himself by his act of creation put himself in a relation to the world; that he removed the barrier of ἀπάϑεια, approaching man and treating him as his friend and ally. This gives iconography access to God. However, it was God's Son who validated it by becoming a real man with individual mental and bodily traits. Even though there are still very strict injunctions in the Bible not to make any effigies, from the time of the Son's incarnation they may be considered occasional, temporary, pedagogical-psychological, conditioned by the historical context. And the Church has been following this interpretation. But has it been doing so without any reservations? God is only a spirit; but he remains an inconceivable mystery, and Christ is not only a man but also God. God cannot be fully experienced with the senses, comprehended with the reason, defined with the language or closed in space and time with a picture or sculpture. From this it follows that although the Church has accepted the iconography of God, the angels, the Virgin Mary and other saints, it still expects that the iconography should be Platonic in its spirit. Any effigy of God, or of Christ as God and man as well as any effigy of a saint should not rivet the gaze and thoughts of the man looking at it but it should lead this thought beyond time and space, i.e. to eternity; it should direct it to what is divine and not physical; it should incline one to contemplate God. Identification of the image with the presented person would be idolatry that is forbidden by God, but it would also be a mistake if a cult effigy only satisfied the sense of beauty and did not take one's thought to God.

Opis:
In order to answer the question 'What is happening to aesthetics?' in the title of the article one has to decide what the problem of aesthetics consists in. The discipline is in a crisis, and sometimes its 'death' is announced and the rule of anti-aesthetics is proclaimed whereas the debate 'Aesthetics or anti-aesthetics?' ends up in a cognitive stalemate: aesthetics is tainted with the error of normativism and reductionism; and anti-aesthetics finishes in relativism. Hence a return is necessary to the classical philosophy (metaphysics) of art (Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas) that avoids errors of the aesthetic tradition and works out a universal and neutral criterion for evaluating purposefulness in art, and also does not interfere with the competence of humanities or of art criticism.

Opis:
It was first of all literature and theatre historians who were the authors of studies and articles concerning liturgical dramatisations. However, such an approach is not complete; only an inter-disciplinary approach gives a full vision. Attention should be paid to at least a few other aspects, the most important of which seems to be liturgy. It turns out that knowledge of widely understood liturgy in numerous cases modifies our understanding of the texts of dramatisations to a considerable degree. They do not have to be understood as just a stage on the way to a complete theatrical spectacle. They can be received as texts with a completely different (from later dramatic forms) character; as ones that have their own specificity and are built by a somewhat different set of rules. The article is an attempt at seeing some of the most important issues connected with dramatisations in a new light: the origin of those texts, their structure, contents, the way they were performed, the way the symbols contained in them functioned, as well as the place they take in the medieval writings.

Czech art
history of painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the 20th century
Opis:
The text is a scholarly interpretation of the manuscript of Wlastimil Hofman's lecture on Czech art, delivered on 16 January 1934 in the Jagellonian University in Cracow. The manuscript comes from Jiài Karásek's collection that since 1960 has been kept in Prague, in the collection of Památník národního písmnictví. Seventy years ago in his lecture Wlastimil Hofman gave an outline of the history of Czech painting, starting from the period of the early Gothic, up to the artists and works from the break of the 19th century that were most important for Czech art. The choice of the Czech artists and their works presented to Polish students was influenced by both the Polish painter's personal views of social-historical nature and his artistic preferences – Hofman knew well Prague's artistic circles of those times and historical and political determinants, also of art, of the then young Czechoslovakia. In the text of his lecture Wlastimil Hofman did not conceal the fact that he did not know the old Czech art very well, so he fully based his opinions about artists and about their works, especially of the Gothic, Renaissance and baroque periods, on opinions expressed by the Czech historians of art who specialized in those periods, like Vincenc Kramaø or Vojtéch Volavka. Only the 19th century Czech painting that Hofman knew well was treated by the Polish painter more broadly and in greater detail. In this part of his lecture the artist expressed his personal tastes and likings, especially in reference to Czech artists of the period of the so-called “national awakening” that started at the break of the 18th century, when, first on the grounds of the Enlightenment ideology, and then of the 19th century nationalism the Czechs undertook actions aiming at revival of their nation. Along with building the foundations of a new economic structure and modern forms of political life they created the basic elements of the literary Czech language, of literature and of their own national art. Owing to the efforts they undertook, in all domains of life – starting from economy and ending with the problems connected with developing the nation's creative powers and national consciousness (with a special emphasis on the element of education, ethics and art), Czech entered the 20th century as the only nation in Central and Eastern Europe that did not have its own state, and after World War I, in 1918, they established Czechoslovakia, a country that was an element of Europe of that time within the so-called Versailles order, and one that was the crowning of the many centuries of Czechs' and Slovaks' national aspirations.

Opis:
The monumental tapestry dating back to the 14th century with images coming from St. John's Apocalypse, kept at present in the Angers castle, was designed on the basis of the iconographic program of the so-called Anglo-French apocalypses. In the unusually rich cycle of images contained in that group of illuminated manuscripts the figure of St. John is stressed in an unprecedented way. The present text is an attempt at referring the way of presentation of the author and narrator of Apocalypse to the miniature tradition and at pointing to the function of his figure in the narrative structure of the work.

They are concerned with the art of the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern age. The author's aim is not only to confront the Biblical narration with the art presentations and to distinguish the repertoire of Jewish symbols and objects made by handicraft presented in the scenes of weddings and of wedding parties, but also to show the infiltration of Jewish wedding rituals into Christian ones that can be seen in art.

Tadeusz Miciński is a dark writer. His eruptive, feverish imagination – and what follows from it, his work – is enlivened by the paradox. However, the creaky tone of that work, the dark, depressive aura that pervades it, the meandering twists of obscure references and breaks should not deceive us. It is not the destructive power of those gestures that is the essence of the work of the author of Nietota. The stake of his project is the light of the truth, or putting it in a different way: revealing the metaphysical background, the core and the meaning of reality.
