This paper is an attempt to review preserved at the Central Archives of Historical Records sources to the history of Livonia in the period from the 13th to the 19th century. The author presents in this respect individual archival fonds, starting from the Middle Ages and the modern era, describing records of official character (Collection of Parchment Records, The Warsaw Crown Archives, The Polish Crown Chancery - Metrica Regni Poloniae, The Crown Treasury Archive), very few records of 19th c., ending with private archives, stored mainly in the Radziwiłłs Archives, and in the Archives of Warklany Estate. This review confirms the importance of sources that survived at the holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records for research on the history of Latvian territory.

Opis:
Legacies of private individuals important for the Polish history, culture and science (including employees of the Central Archives of Historical Records) are preserved in AGAD among other fonds containing records of clans, families, individuals and their estates. Some of them have already been elaborated and are available to researchers, while others are still awaiting elaboration (due to the rules of closure period for public inspection). The most important fonds that have been already processed are legacies of Feliks Bentkowski, Aleksander Czołowski (preserved in his Collection of Materials), Marian Morelowski, Michal Marczak, Stefan Rygl, Józef Jodkowski. In addition, there are not elaborated twentiethcentury legacies of eminent historians and archivists from AGAD Adam Stebelski, Antoni Rybarski, Aleksander Walawender, Adam Wolff, Maria Józefowiczówna, Józef Płochy, Jadwiga Jankowska, Henryk Rappaport, Franciszek Ramotowski and Teresa Zielińska. The legacies of scientists, archivists and researchers, performing various public or social functions deserve attention not only because of their value but also as an interesting contribution to the history of the art of collecting in Poland. Those records provide an important source for research of history, history of law, art, heraldry, history of cities, archiving, editorial work and philosophy. The legacies also enable a more complete reconstruction of the history of institutions with which the legators were bound.

Opis:
This paper first describes the functioning of first instance local courts of justice (called district courts) in medieval Poland, and against this background presents records of the District Court in Szadek. The historical documents, produced in the period between 1417 (first records) and 1768, constitute a separate archival file, which contains 106 volumes, between several hundred and over a thousand pages each. Ten of the preserved volumes are from the medieval times (1417-1510). The entries in the old books cover various matters: court Writs, information about court verdicts and sentences, lists of witnesses, records of credit and real estate transactions, obligations to settle payments etc. These archives are considered to be the main source for studies on landed gentry, but their vast potential has not yet been fully appreciated or exploited by researchers.

The paper is an excerpt from an unpublished master’s thesis „Capitalist entrepreneurship of Przezdziecki family in 1850–1939”. It presents information about the contents of Józef Władysław Kobylański Collection, preserved in Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD) in Warsaw. The paper characterizes the creator of the collection and presents how the documents came to be in his possession. The collection encompasses materials pertaining to a number of families: Przezdziecki, Szlezygier vel Schlesiger, Czechowski, Bobiński and Moczulski, as well as materials related to Bad Reinerz (since 1945 Duszniki Zdrój), from 19th and 20th century. Other noteworthy archival materials in the collection include a letter from King of Poland Sigismund Augustus to Jan Modliszewski, żupnik of Bydgoszcz from 1555, confi rmation of perpetual land ownership by King Władysław IV for Jan Puchalski and two documents of John III Sobieski of 1686 — permit to hold a fair for Klwów town and appointment of Aleksander Okulicz Kozaryn as treasurer. The most numerous group of archival materials are those pertaining to economic activity of Przezdziecki family in Warsaw at the turn of 19th and 20th century. The materials include excerpts from books of accounts of Europejski Hotel, vital records (certifi cate of baptism of Konstanty Przezdziecki), correspondence, calling cards, and excerpts from city and land records pertaining to the history of the family.
Artykuł jest fragmentem nieopublikowanej pracy magisterskiej pt. Przedsiębiorczość kapitalistyczna rodziny Przezdzieckich około 1850-1939 roku. Zawiera ogólne informacje o zawartości Zbioru Józefa Władysława Kobylańskiego, przechowywanego w Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych. Na wstępie przybliża postać samego twórcy zbioru oraz analizuje, w jaki sposób dokumenty znalazły się w jego posiadaniu. W dalszej części zawiera opis pierwszych 129 rozpoznanych jednostek archiwalnych. Dotyczą one głównie rodzin Przezdzieckich, Szlezygierów vel Schlesigerów, Czechowskich, Bobińskich i Moczulskich. Ponadto w opracowanym fragmencie zbioru znajdują się materiały związane z miejscowością Bad Reinerz (od 1945 r. Duszniki Zdrój), pochodzące z XIX i XX w. Z innych ciekawych archiwaliów warto wymienić list króla polskiego Zygmunta Augusta do Jana Modliszewskiego, żupnika bydgoskiego z 1555 r., potwierdzenie przez króla Władysława IV Wazę wieczystego prawa do ziemi dane Janowi Puchalskiemu oraz dwa dokumenty Jana III Sobieskiego. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy nadania prawa do odbywania jarmarku w mieście Klwowie, a drugi nominacji Aleksandra Okulicza Kozaryna na urząd skarbnika – obydwa wystawiono w 1686 roku. Najliczniejszą grupę akt w omawianym zbiorze stanowią jednak archiwalia dotyczące działalności gospodarczej rodziny Przezdzieckich w Warszawie, w końcu XIX i na początku XX wieku. Zawierają m.in. wyciągi z ksiąg rachunkowych Hotelu Europejskiego, papiery osobiste (m.in. metryka chrztu Konstantego Przezdzieckiego), korespondencję, blankiety wizytowe i wypisy z ksiąg grodzkich i ziemskich odnoszących się do historii tego rodu.

W okresie II Rzeczypospolitej państwowe Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych w Warszawie było ważną placówką archiwalną. Jego dyrektorem był Józef Siemieński. Czytelnia w Archiwum miała 20 miejsc. Z Archiwum rocznie korzystało od 80 do 150 czytelników. Badano źródła dotyczące: polityki, gospodarki, życia społecznego, kultury, a także genealogię. Z Archiwum korzystali profesorowie z Warszawy (Józef Rafacz, Wacław Tokarz, Jan Karol Kochanowski), z Poznania (J. Rutkowski, S. Bodniak, A. Skałkowski) i młodzi historycy z Krakowa (Karol Buczek, Krystyna Pieradzka, E. Latacz, Kazimierz Lepszy). J. Bujak przysyłał swoich uczniów ze Lwowa. Wypisy ze źródeł ormiańskich dla E. Słuszkiewicza ze Lwowa przygotowywał Stanisław Szachno-Romanowicz, pracownik Archiwum. Orientalistycznymi źródłami w Archiwum interesował się W. Kotwicz ze Lwowa i S. Szapszał z Wilna. Badał je również Abdullah Zihni, obywatel Turcji, uczeń T. Kowalskiego z Krakowa. W tym czasie miasta uniwersyteckie (Wilno, Kraków, Lwów) miały własne duże archiwa. Przyjazdy na kwerendę archiwalną i pobyt w Warszawie były kosztowne, co wpływało na ograniczanie możliwości korzystania z archiwum.
During the Second Republic of Poland period, the state-owned Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw was an important archival institution. Its director was Józef Siemieński. The reading room of the Archive had 20 seats. Annually, the Archive was used by 80 to 150 readers. Sources were studied regarding politics, economy, social life, culture, as well as genealogy. The Archive was used by professors from Warsaw (Józef Rafacz, Wacław Tokarz, Jan Karol Kochanowski, from Poznań (J. Rutkowski, S. Bodniak, A. Skałkowski) and young historians from Kraków (Karol Buczek, Krystyna Pieradzka, E. Latacz, Kazimierz Lepszy). J. Bujak dispatched his students from Lviv to the Archive. Stanisław Szachno-Romanowicz, an employee of the Archive, prepared excerpts from Armenian sources for E. Słuszkiewicz from Lviv. Orientalist sources in the Archive were of interest to W. Kotwicz from Lviv and S. Shapshal from Vilnius. They were also researched by Abdullah Zihni, Turkish citizen, a student of T. Kowalski from Krakow. At that time, the university cities (Vilnius, Krakow, Lviv) had their own large archives. It was expensive to come and stay in Warsaw for archival research, which had an impact that limited the use of the archives.

Opis:
It took King Sigismund Augustus the entire decade of the 1560s to bring the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania together. The plan was finalized on 1st of July 1569 at the General Sejm in Lublin. Before that, intense negotiations were held for almost three weeks, from 10th to 27th of June 1569. The conclusion of the agreement was completed by the exchange of acts of the union by both parties and the confirmation issued by the king, according to the “script” from Vilnius dated 24th March 1569. Evidence of those events is preserved in the only surviving parchment document of the Union of Lublin. It is the copy that the Lithuanian side has presented to the Polish side, authenticating it with 78 wax seals. The document is preserved in the Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw, in the Collection of Parchment Records, no. 5627. Before World War II, the document was viewed by professors Władysław Semkowicz and Stanisław Kutrzeba, publishers of the source edition Akta unii Polski z Litwą 1385–1791 [Records of the Poland-Lithuania Union 1385–1791] (Kraków 1932). At that time they saw two other acts of the Union of Lublin, which they also published in their book. Those were: the Union document presented by the Polish side to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (with 140 seals) and the so-called Original No. 2 (with 63 seals) of the Lithuanian document (i.e. the extant one). The article attempts to reconstruct the work of the Polish Crown Chancellery, operating under the supervision of Vice-Chancellor Franciszek Krasiński, which between 29 th June and 1 st July 1569 prepared these documents and organized their sealing by several hundred signatories. In the text, special attention is given – as Władysław Semkowicz and Stanisław Kutrzeba have already done – to the differences between the two documents of the Lithuanian side (the extant one and the lost one).

In 2016, inventory book of Old Warsaw furriers guild from 1666–1932 was added to the fonds of Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD). It was purchased from the existing Guild of furriers, glovers and tanners. Its value is increased by the fact, that beyond scarce royal documents and city council documents issued for, or in connection with, the furriers guild, AGAD does not have any other records of that guild. The book is a manuscript, bound in brown, somewhat distressed leather, with embossed title “Inventory of guild laws [...] Anno 1667”. It contains a list of documents and records preserved by furriers guild since 17th century until 1930s. In 1917, the archive of furriers guild contained, besides a number of royal privileges, 14 books and numerous loose leaf documents. During World War II, the archive was hidden in the Artisanship Improvement Institute at 50 Chmielna Street in Warsaw. The building was bombed during the Warsaw Uprising and burned down. It can be surmised, that the guild book was saved by accident, most likely, at the time it was in possession of one of the members of the guild.
W 2016 r. zasób Archiwum Głównego Akt Dawnych w Warszawie wzbogacił się o księgę inwentarzową cechu kuśnierzy Starej Warszawy z lat 1666–1932. Zakupiono ją od działającego do dziś warszawskiego Cechu kuśnierzy, kożuszkarzy, rękawiczników i garbarzy. Jej wartość podnosi fakt, że AGAD poza nielicznymi dokumentami królewskimi i dokumentami rady miasta wystawianymi na rzecz cechu kuśnierzy lub w jego sprawach, nie posiada innej dokumentacji tego cechu. Zakupiona księga to rękopis oprawny w brązową, obecnie nieco przetartą skórę, z wyciśniętym tytułem: „Inwentarz praw cechowych y inszych rzeczy za starszych pana Mat[yasa] Surm[ikiewicza] pana Paw[ła] Szik[orskiego] gminnych pana Marti[na] Chudzin[skiego] Ann[o] 1667”. Zawiera ona spis dokumentów i akt przechowywanych przez cech kuśnierzy od XVII do lat 30. XX w. W 1917 r. w archiwum cechu kuśnierzy znajdowało się, poza kilkunastoma przywilejami królewskimi, 14 ksiąg oraz liczne dokumenty luźne. W czasie II wojny światowej archiwum to ukryto w Instytucie Doskonalenia Rzemiosła przy ul. Chmielnej 50 w Warszawie. Dom ten został zbombardowany podczas powstania warszawskiego i spłonął. Można przypuszczać, że księga cechowa ocalała przez przypadek, najprawdopodobniej była wówczas w rękach jednego z członków cechu.

The article provides information on records of the Investigative Deputation, preserved in Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD) in Warsaw. The Deputation was created on 28th April 1794, during the Kościuszko Uprising, by Provisional Council of the Duchy of Masovia. It remained active until the end of the Uprising (1st November 1794). Its organizational structure and competences have changed a number of times. The most important task of the Investigative Deputation was conducting preliminary interrogations of detained persons, and then transferring the records of interrogation, with opinion attached, to supreme authorities of the Uprising. Records of the Investigative Deputation are preserved in AGAD in two archival collections: Lithuanian Metrica (section VII, sign. ref. 175–197) and in the Archive of the Kingdom of Poland (sign.ref. 250–251, 254–256). Proces biskupa (późniejszego prymasa Królestwa Polskiego) Wojciecha Skarszewskiego przed Sądem Kryminalnym Wojskowym był jedną z najgłośniejszych spraw sądowych podczas powstania kościuszkowskiego. Sprawa ta do dziś wzbudza zainteresowanie. W celu jej przybliżenia opublikowano dwa protokoły z przesłuchań biskupa, przeprowadzone przez Deputację Indagacyjną (w dniach 1–4 IX 1794) i przez Sąd Kryminalny Wojskowy (10 IX 1794). Rękopisy tych przesłuchań są przechowywane w Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych w Warszawie w zbiorze Archiwum Królestwa Polskiego (sygn. 251). Materiały te są fragmentem zachowanych szczątkowo archiwaliów z Sądu Kryminalnego Wojskowego.

Opis:
The Union of Lublin document, preserved in the Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw (in the Collection of Parchment Records, no. 5627) is an extremely valuable relic of great historical significance. In 2015 it was honoured with the European Heritage Label, in 2017 it was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The 450th anniversary of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, which took place in 2019, was an opportunity to summarize the many years of preservation care exercised over the document by the Central Laboratory for the Preservation of Archival Materials at the Central Archive of Historical Records. Over the years the concept of conservation has gradually changed. Restoration, aimed at restoring the original appearance of the object, gave way to protective and preventive maintenance, which emphasizes extensive documentation of the item and minimizes intervention in its structure. The article presents an outline of the problems regarding the state of preservation and causes of damage to wax seals, which have been discussed and researched in recent years.
