Opis:
The genetic variability and biodiversity of tree populations ensure the stability and sustainability of forest ecosystems. New research tools based on molecular DNA markers enable precise characterisation of forest genetic resources, i.e. detection of different allele frequencies in mature trees and progeny populations. The paper describes the genetic structure of mature stands of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Oława Forest District and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) in Jawor Forest District and stands of their respective progeny. In the Scots pine stand, there was a slight increase (0.6%) in heterozygosity level and a larger increase (4.9%) in the inbreeding coefficient of progeny trees. In the Norway spruce stand, despite a small reduction (0.9%) in heterozygosity, a similar increase (4.6%) in the inbreeding coefficient of progeny was revealed. In both stands, allele richness and the partition probability of basic clustering were high. Both pine and spruce adults and progeny trees were characterised by high levels of genetic similarity (96% and 79%, respectively). Gene flow between the mature and progeny populations was high (Nm > 1) for both Scots pine and Norway spruce. Conservation of the gene pool within forest tree stands requires an increase in the proportion of natural regeneration. To estimate the extent to which genes are transmitted between adult trees and their progeny, more studies are needed, especially taking into account the influence of silviculture measures, like selective tree cutting, on the genetic variability of the younger generation. These results confirm that the gene pool was conserved when transmitted between the stands studied, as well as highlight the usefulness of such a study for silvicultural purposes.

Opis:
The genetic variability of sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.) mature stand and its natural progeny was investigated. Comparison between genetic structure of parental and progeny trees was based on frequencies of nuclear microsatellite (SSR) alleles occurring in three DNA loci. A slight (4%) increase of gene pool between oak mature and progeny trees was revealed by heterozygosity level estimation, maintaining 86.3% of genetic similarity between generations. Also allele richness, partition probability of basic clustering and inbreed coefficient proved the high genetic similarity between parental and progeny of investigated oak trees. The gene flow occurred within the stands as far as rare alleles were transmitted or new ones appeared in the progenies. The results highlight the necessity of such a study for silvicultural measures taken in order to proceed natural or artificial regeneration in forest tree stand.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to characterise changes in the natural forest of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) Strict Reserve during a 15-year period. To allow for a more precise determination of the time course, overall duration and intensity of the observed changes, we further divided the 15-year period into shorter 2–7-year intervals. Taken together, the Strict Reserve forest stands cover 4584 hectares and they constitute the oldest part of the Białowieża Forest placed under protection in 1921. The measurements were carried out in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2011 and 2015 on 160 permanent sample plots, which are systematically distributed throughout the BNP Strict Reserve. During those 15 years, the volume of merchantable timber and the tree density fluctuated only slightly, because the reduction in standing volume due to a spruce and ash decline was compensated for by an increase in the standing volume of lime, hornbeam and alder. The volume increment and tree loss fluctuated slightly, but were nevertheless similar throughout the whole period between 2000 and 2015. The number of trees in the regeneration layer increased. The number of hornbeam trees in this layer increased continuously throughout the whole measurement period, while the number of maple trees started to increase in the second half. All together only five tree species growing in the BNP Strict Reserve progressed from the regeneration layer to the canopy layer in significant numbers. As a result, a gradual decrease in species diversity of forest stands may be expected. The rather stable, average volume of merchantable timber in the BNP Strict Reserve may be due to the fact that, in a forest with diverse habitats and high species richness, only few stands are subjected to strong disturbances in a given period of time. Repeated measurements during a relatively short period of time allowed the detecting some fairly quick changes occurring in natural lowland forests.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to apply the forest soil trophic index (ITGL) in the assessment of post−agricultural soil under naturally regenerated silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) stands. The study was conducted in Mazowieckie region (central Poland) in 10 locations (tab. 1). In each location we established 4 study plots with naturally regenerated silver birch of different age. The age of the investigated stands ranged from 2 to 17 years. On each study plot samples from three upper soil horizons (0−5 cm, 5−15 cm and 15−50 cm) were collected for laboratory analysis. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) content, particle size and the content of exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). These soil characteristics were on used for ITGL calculation. Chemical properties of soils under silver birch regeneration varied with regard to trees age, whereas physical attributes turned to be rather stabile over the time (tab. 2). According to ITGL value investigated soils were classified as eutrophic. It is probably the effect of high base cations content, which is a result of systematic fertilization during the long term agricultural use. The insignificantly different ITGL values for the studied soils (tab. 3) indicated their similarity in terms of site productivity potential and soil−geological characteristics. The soil properties, especially the quality of soil organic matter described with C/N ratio, improved several years after the cessation of agricultural activity and spontaneous afforestation. The obtained results indicate that silver birch can be used in the stand composition on post−agricultural areas.

Grey alder (Alnus incana Moench.) in Poland is a recommended species for dry and oligotrophic habitat improvement and land reclamation. In Poland these issues have not been thoroughly investigated. The field experiment with Scots pine and grey alder in the mixed plantation was carried out on the fire−burnt area in the Potrzebowice Forest District. The proportion of grey alder in the species composition of plantations notably improved the growth of pine, but only with a 50−75% share of alder. This created some disturbances in the tending of plantations. The impact of pine on alder was negative.

Opis:
The Kaszuby Lake District is located beyond the natural range of Norway spruce, however its share in local forest stands is considerable (14.8%) and its vitality and growth are here not less than within the natural range. The study presents the results of stock-taking of natural regeneration of Norway spruce in this region in year 2002 and 2012 and the relevant silvicultural recommendations. The stock of spruce natural regeneration was taken using the electronic database of the Regional Headquarters of State Forests in Gdańsk. The regeneration was put into following categories: seedlings (height below 0.5 m), lower advanced growth (height above 0.5 m and DBH below 7 cm), higher advanced growth (height above 3 m and DBH above 7 cm) and undergrowth (with dominating self sown spruce). In total 20 834 ha of Norway spruce natural regenerations were listed in year 2002 and 26 016 ha in year 2012 (increase by 24.9%). Most of them occur in fresh sites suited for mixed deciduous forests (LMśw) – in years 2002 and 2012 respectively 52.5% and 50.1%, and fresh sites suited for mixed coniferous forests (BMśw) – in years 2002 and 2012 respectively 30.4% and 32%. The increase of natural regeneration of Norway spruce in this period was connected with the 23.6% decrease in volume of spruce stands in age of above 40 years. Majority of spontaneously arriving spruce regenerations turn to the undergrowth, because of unfavorable light conditions under canopy and much to high density of seedlings and advanced growth. Good quality advanced growth on suited forest sites should be uncovered by thinning cuttings and consequently included into the future multispecies stands, with Norway spruce share up to 30%.

Opis:
This paper presents results on the restoration of Scots pine stands established on post-agricultural lands undergoing conversion into mixed stands. Sessile oak (Quercus petraea), common beech (Fagus sylvatica) and small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) seedlings were planted in artificially created gaps (0,02 ha to 0,05 ha each) cut in six experimental plots (Forest Districts: Bielsk, Krynki, Sobibór, Dobieszyn, Skrwilno and Łupawa) located in 20–25-years-old pine stands. The experimental plots were spread across northern, central and eastern Poland and affected by root-rot fungus (Heterobasidion annosum). Nine years after planting, the number of individual trees and shrub species, their height sum and average height were calculated for fenced artificial gaps (LSO) as well as non-fenced artificial gaps (LSN) and compared to natural gaps (LN) and non-disturbed neighboring stands (D). Results were calculated separately for the planted species (oak, lime and beech) but combined for all other species. The results indicate satisfactory restoration in all of the investigated plots except in Krynki, which is located in a relatively poor site. Significant differences appeared between height sum as well as average height of planted species in fenced compared to non-fenced gaps. Furthermore, in both, natural and artificial gaps, the species composition of the young generation was enriched with natural regeneration of pioneer species, mainly silver birch (Betula pendula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and aspen (Populus tremula).

The study compares height growth of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) undergrowth in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands and in open canopy conditions. Material was collected in 20 Scots pine stands with well−developed pedunculate oak undergrowth located in north−eastern Poland, representing the mixed deciduous forest type (Querco roboris−Pinetum). Fraction of oak undergrowth with slow height increment in Scots pine stands amounted 40% and was twice as high as in the open canopy conditions. On average 10 years longer than in the open canopy conditions juvenile phase characterizes the height growth of pedunculate oak undergrowth. A shift of height growth phases of oak undergrowth was recorded. However in most of the stands Scots pine shelter did not cause large delay in the age at which the culmination of current height increment of pedunculate oak is achieved.
