Opis:
The paper presents temporal relationships between the breakdown of tree stand in the subalpine spruce forest and the regeneration of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) as well as the rate of height growth of rowan stems. Rowans growing in a large gap recruited mostly from the seedling and sapling bank established under the living spruce stand before its breakdown. The rate of stem height growth was five times higher after the gap formation than under spruce stand. In spite of considerable age differences of rowans the variability in their final height after over 20 years of rapid growth was small.

Opis:
The objectives of the study was to investigate and compare the characteristics of oak advance−growth of various age present under Scots pine canopy and growing on the mesic mixed coniferous (BMśw) or mesic mixed deciduous (LMśw) forest site types. The study was conducted in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland) in 21 Scots pine stands ca. 90 years of age, and with a well−developed oak advance−growth. The study sites were divided into 4 groups depending on the age of oak: 15, 20, 25 or 30−years−old. The empirical data concerned trees frequency (per unit area), average breast height diameter, height and basal area. The dependence of these characteristics on type of the main stand and advance−growth was then determined by statistical analysis. Above all, an attempt was made to determine the impact of forest site type conditions on the characteristics of oaks advance−growth. Results show that oaks are present at the density that makes the possibility of the advance−growth development into the stand real. Trees in the upper storey are found to exert a great influence on the silvicultural value of advance−growth trees. In particular, the density of trees in the main stand is a feature found to affect greatly the layer of oak advance−growth.

Opis:
Different methods of logging slash management (LSM) and methods of soil preparation (MSP) can create different conditions for the growth of forest trees. This occurs through variation in soil aeration, tree nutrition or microbial conditions. These factors are modified by climate, soil fertility, treats from insects or fungal pathogens and renewed species. The aim of this study was to compare effects of three LSM methods: 1) crushing and mixing with the soil by Mery Crusher, 2) chopping and leaving on the soil surface, and 3) removal from the clear−cut, and three MSP: 1) double−mouldboard forest plough LPz−75, 2) active plough U−162, and 3) forest mill FAO−FAR FV 4088 on biometric parameters, density and survival of six−years old Scots pine seedlings. Field research was conducted in Narol Forest District (south−eastern Poland). The soil in the study area was classified as brown podzolic, formed on loose sands with typical mor humus. The experiment was established by planting 10 000 one−year−old pine seedlings per hectare, after clear cut and followed by a two−factor block design consisting of nine variants distinguished on the basis of LSM and MSP randomly assigned to each of the three blocks. Tree height and root collar diameter were measured three times, at the end of 1st, 3rd and 6th growing season. The results showed no statistically significant differences in the size of the analyzed parameters of planted seedlings. Seedlings in the variant with site preparation by crusher and forest mill were slightly higher and thicker. This indicates the better trophic conditions in that variant. LSM did not affect either seedlings density or their survival. A slightly higher survival rate and tree density occurred in variants with crusher regardless of soil preparation method. It follows that, all presented experimental variants give similar results. Therefore, selection of the most appropriate methods of site and soil preparation should primarily respect ecological and economic indicators, and such local factors as microclimate, mainly precipitation, site fertility and threats from pests and fungal diseases.

Opis:
Currently observed climate change creates favourable conditions for the development of not only deciduous species (oak and beech), but also some coniferous (e.g. fir). In the Scots pine stands growing on fertile forest site types one can observe the dynamic development of the under−canopy layers composed of those species. Oak or beech saplings are often characterized by good silvicultural value. Also silver fir creates a well−developed cover under Scots pine trees. Beech and fir as the most shade−tolerant tree species are able to handle the conditions under Scots pine. They can grow for a long time under the cover without damage to their height or diameter growth. Especially, a dynamic growth of oaks can often be observed on fresh mixed coniferous and fresh mixed broadleaved habitats. Oak layers in Scots pine stands are generally created in the way of natural regeneration with remarkable contribution of the jays, which spread the seeds even at considerable distances from the old trees. The corresponding intensity of thinnings supports to shape the proper silvicultural value of such under−canopy storeys. Observations on growth of such stand layers in the Scots pine stands in eastern and central Poland consider the desirability of including them in the next generation of stands. Their presence contributes to improvement of the biological stability of the stands, and also leads to increased productivity. By implementing to the forest practice the model of semi−natural silviculture, one wants to consider the possibility of using the saplings currently existing under the Scots pine as a component of the future stand. Knowledge about the silvicultural value and the impact on growth of lower layers will enable to develop the principles of proper cultivation of the multi−storey stands.

Opis:
This paper presents results on the restoration of Scots pine stands established on post-agricultural lands undergoing conversion into mixed stands. Sessile oak (Quercus petraea), common beech (Fagus sylvatica) and small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) seedlings were planted in artificially created gaps (0,02 ha to 0,05 ha each) cut in six experimental plots (Forest Districts: Bielsk, Krynki, Sobibór, Dobieszyn, Skrwilno and Łupawa) located in 20–25-years-old pine stands. The experimental plots were spread across northern, central and eastern Poland and affected by root-rot fungus (Heterobasidion annosum). Nine years after planting, the number of individual trees and shrub species, their height sum and average height were calculated for fenced artificial gaps (LSO) as well as non-fenced artificial gaps (LSN) and compared to natural gaps (LN) and non-disturbed neighboring stands (D). Results were calculated separately for the planted species (oak, lime and beech) but combined for all other species. The results indicate satisfactory restoration in all of the investigated plots except in Krynki, which is located in a relatively poor site. Significant differences appeared between height sum as well as average height of planted species in fenced compared to non-fenced gaps. Furthermore, in both, natural and artificial gaps, the species composition of the young generation was enriched with natural regeneration of pioneer species, mainly silver birch (Betula pendula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and aspen (Populus tremula).

Opis:
Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, are the dominant form of natural disturbance in the temperate forests. Gaps play a critical role in driving stand dynamics and influencing forest growth cycle. They increase habitat diversity, structural complexity, fauna and flora species diversity. The size of a gap may strongly influence tree species regeneration composition, vegetation growth, nutrient cycling, microclimate and may have considerable effect on a number of biological processes. The main aim of this study was to understand the effects of gap size diversity on species composition and number of natural regeneration. The study was carried out in near−natural mixed stands dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) representing different development stages and phases in the Świętokrzyski National Park, (central Poland). All gaps over than 20 m 2 intersected by a transects line were sampled. All saplings and seedlings were counted in circular plots (10 m²) evenly spaced along the long axis in the N−S and E−W gradients of each gap. Natural regeneration was analyzed for 62 canopy gaps of various sizes. The gaps were classified into three size classes: small ≤100 m², medium 101−250 m² and large >250 m². The gap size ranged from 21 to 397 m², with a median of 104 m². The dominant tree species regenerated in gaps were fir (69%) and beech (24%). The number of regeneration significantly depended on the gap size (p=0.027). The highest frequency of saplings was found in gaps of ≤100 m². The number of natural regeneration was significantly negatively correlated with gap size (r=–0.261, p=0.040). The density of silver fir regeneration was significantly higher in gaps of ≤100 m² and 101−250 m² (p<0.05). The share of fir in stand species composition effected on the number of silver fir and European beech regeneration. The results of this study demonstrated the utility of gap−based approach for better understanding ecosystem responses to tree cutting for modern forest management.

Opis:
The role of the rodents in forest regeneration includes both negative (seed and seedlings consumption) and positive (seed dispersal) aspects. The objective of this paper is to review the knowledge of this dual effect of the rodents on forest regeneration after disturbance, particularly in temperate managed forest stands. Many studies have demonstrated that consumption of seeds and seedlings by rodents can substantially inhibit regeneration of forest stands after disturbance. Small mammal predation on oak, pine and European beech seeds and seedlings contributes to reduced forest regeneration after tree harvest and natural disturbances such as fires. On the other hand, some rodent species may promote seed dispersal towards deforested areas. Moreover, they frequently prefer nesting and caching of acorns near structures providing shelter. Such structures are abundant in disturbed areas and appear to promote higher survival of cached seeds. Furthermore, there are certain techniques of seed and seedling protection against small mammals, e.g., planting seeds in the soil, using polyethylene tubes to raise seedlings, or providing alternative food for rodents. The positive impact of the rodents can be enhanced and negative minimized through proper management, such as providing appropriate microhabitats for seed caching, or maintaining continuity of canopy cover/forest stands.

In the similar soil and climate conditions, the tended and non−tended Scots pine undergrowth of natural origin was equal to the thicket of the same age in terms of the usefulness for cultivation. The non−tended natural regeneration of pine showed the statistically significantly highest mean values of diameter at breast height, height and current annual height increment in comparison with the tended natural and artificial regeneration. The comparison of the morphological parameters of six year old pine seedlings did not reveal statistically significant differences between the soil preparing with the double mould board plough (LPz−75) or the rotary plough. The more frequent silvicultural use of Scots pine natural regeneration, which locally exceeds the artificial regeneration in terms of growth traits and vitality, can diminish the risk of damage to pine stands resulting from suddenly occurring changes in site conditions.
