Opis:
Based upon the true voyages various methods of avoidance maneuver determination in ship - cyclone encounter situations were presented. The goal was to find the economically optimal solution (minimum fuel consumption, maintaining the voyage schedule) while at the same time not to exceed an acceptable weather risk level.

The paper introduces some aspects of maximum size ocean going ship’s safety during the sailing on Central American rivers. Based on solution of above problems, presented necessary hydrographical information concerning River Orinoco, Mississippi, Rio Magdalena and the most biggest of the World – Amazon River. Solutions of several river’s navigational and manoeuvres problems suggested by Traffic Engineering have also been presented. Independently, there are suggestions concerning improvements of the sea transport safety in the river’s estuary.

Opis:
A significant increase in demand for navigation support systems called Onboard Routing Systems (ORS) can be observed in the World’s merchant fleet. ORS is a navigation-support system that enables route programming to warn of dangers and navigation constraints and determine the required route-safety level directly onboard the vessel. In this article, an attempt to analyze and compare two ORS systems has been made: the Ship Performance Optimization System (SPOS), by the Meteo Consult Group; and the Bon Voyage system by Applied Weather Technologies (AWT). Individual items, methods, and criteria of both systems for optimization and weather forecasting models utilized have been compared. Particular attention has been paid to the usefulness of the systems regarding the problem of identification and avoidance of hazards such as tropical cyclones and wave resonance. Ergonomics of both systems has also been compared.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to highlight the needs for improved access to high quality maritime data and information in the Arctic, and the need to develop maritime communication infrastructure with at least the same quality, in terms of availability and integrity, as in other more centralized areas. The foreseen Arctic ice meltdown is expected to provide new maritime transport corridors within relatively short time, and there is an urgent need to prepare for this, to ensure safe operations at sea and to protect the vulnerable Arctic environment. This paper points out some of these needs by presenting a case from a former accident in the Arctic sea. The case shows how the lack of proper information and data complicates the emergency operation. Some possible solutions to the challenges are proposed, and finally the paper briefly discusses the IMO e-Navigation concept in light of the Arctic challenges.

Opis:
Advances in ocean modelling have led to improved performance for operational ocean forecasting and the availability of continuously reliable forecast information for certain ocean regions of the world. Although such forecasts are being increasingly adopted into a wide range of services across the maritime industry they have not yet been considered as candidates to supplement or to substitute conventional tide tables for navigation use. The issue is important in the context of climate change and the added uncertainty now placed on the use of conventional tide table for navigation in complex coastal waters. In the context of e-navigation it is timely to begin to explore the issue and examine how such forecasts might be used and adopted. This requires closer connectivity between ocean forecasting and navigation communities and the involvement of overarching organisations such as IMO and I GOOS. This paper raises the issue and opens the debate.
