Opis:
This paper explains biological background of the project. Oak decline in Polish stands in recent years has become a serious problem. Symptoms of disease like thinning crowns, yellowing of the leaves or the appearance of dark exudates on the trunks are observed. Such symptoms are characteristic for pathogenic organisms of the genus Phytophthora. Identification and confirmation of the presence of these pathogens is difficult. That is why we have tried to estimate the presence of pathogens in the rhizosphere soil in oak stands on the basis of visual assessment of crowns trees with symptoms typical of Phytophthora infection.

Opis:
The rate of oak decline has greatly accelerated in recent years. It has been reported that in October 2005, the amount of standing dead trees in oak stands of 14 Forest District Administrations situated within the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Warsaw exceeded 70,000 m3 and an area of 103 hectares was selected where sanitary fellings need to be applied. The restocking of cut areas in the thinned stands with substitutional species was proposed. Besides, the paper presents a conception of oak regeneration by planting trees in wider spacing, under the shelter of pioneer species (mainly birch), using the tending species (i. a. hornbeam).

Opis:
Oak decline is insufficiently described problem. Declining oaks are in various age and the most commonly observed symptoms of the disease include growth inhibition and buds mortality. The dieback occurs periodically, mainly because of the impact of abiotic factors (drought, frost and the lowering of the groundwater level). In this complex phenomenon the biological factors, including numerous species of Chromista (Chromalveolata) and fungi play important role as well. The list of pathogens responsible for the dieback includes numerous species of Pythium and Phytophthora, as well as Biscogniauxia, Discula, Pleurophoma, Botryosphaeria and Diplodia. Among other organisms responsible for the oak decline are fungi belonging to Fusarium species. The aim of this study was to investigate the species composition of pathogens colonizing the dying oak buds including undeveloped or dying shoots obtained from Łomża, Rudka and Czarna Białostocka forest districts (eastern Poland). Sampling of symptomatic shoots of Quercus robur L. was performed in 2013, respecting different parts of tree crowns (top, central and bottom). Mycological material for analysis included mycelium growing on dying shoots after incubation in a chamber and tissue collected from symptomatic shoots and placed on PDA medium. For selected isolates of fungi the identification was confirmed by the PCR analysis using ITS1 and ITS4 primers. Among analyzed fungi Fusarium spp., Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Botryosphaeria quercuum and /em>Coniothyrium spp. required special attention. The Fusarium spp. group of fungi dominated with an average frequency of 32%. The molecular analysis revealed the presence of several species including Fusarium avenaceum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Lophiostoma corticola and Nectria mauritiicola.

Opis:
Phytophthora cinnamomi was isolated from nurseries and in the stand. Declining pedonculate seedlings and adult oaks Quercus robur L showed disease symptoms. Affected seedlings were dying as quick as severe damage of root system occurred. Infected trees showed dieback of crowns and characteristic dark exudation on stems. Beneath the bark necrosis of bast tissue was observed. Apart of P. cinnamomi such fungal pathogens as Fusarium avenaceum and F. oxysporum were isolated from diseased plants. The number of obtained isolates of P. cinnamomi could be probably higher if they were not quickly overgrown by Mucor, Chaetomium and Trichoderma spp. Isolates of P. cinnamomi from oak, pine and spruce cause stem rot of oak seedlings and necrosis spread about 8,5−10,4 mm/24 hr. On infected parts of oak the fastest spread was observed on roots and the slowest on leaf blades.

Opis:
Oak decline phenomenon has been observed in Poland in the 1980s. Especially, Krotoszyn Forest District was affected in the years 1982−1984, when oaks were dying in a mass extend causing economic and ecological problems. Twenty five years later many Phytophthora species were isolated from rhizosphere soil suggesting their important role in fine root damage. This research was focused on application of fertilisers increasing oak resistance to soil−borne pathogens. In total, 60 soil samples were collected c.a. 1 meter from trunks of oaks representing control and treated variant with Actifos® and Kalex® fertilisers. The fine root parameters (smaller than 2 mm) were evaluated with the water scanner and WinRhizo software. The same soil samples were analysed for the presence of macro− (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and microelements (Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Zn). The use of ammonium and potassium phosphites in the form of foliar spray had a beneficial effect on the health of oak stands (Quercus robur L.) in the Krotoszyn Forest District. Three parameters: defoliation (ICP Forest), vitality according to Roloff method and synthetic index of damage were applied in order to evaluate the status of oaks health. Two aforementioned crown parameters were obtained from visual assessment from the ground, while the synthetic index of damage was calculated according to the formula developed by Dmyterko and Bruchwald. The parameters of fine roots after treatments, especially their number, length and surface improved. Trees with better quality fine roots had more chance to survive in unfavourable environmental conditions like drought. Phosphite treatments of oak stand positively influenced the chemical properties of soil, decreased acidity, but increased availability of Zn for plants, and probably reduced root damage by toxic aluminium ions. An improvement in the health of fine roots (that were saved by phosphites from damage caused by pathogenic species of Phytophthora genus present in the soil) will have a positive effect on the reconstruction of crown architecture (shoots development from dormant buds).

Opis:
Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is the most valuable deciduous tree species in Poland. For almost 30 years, an oak decline resulting from stress factors leading to a decrease of tree vitality in the long-term has been observed. The aim of the present study was to determine the proportion of leaves infected by the fungus Erysiphe alphitoides, the cause of powdery mildew, in post-flood oak stands situated in the Forest District Wołów (51°32’N, 16°62’E) as well as to evaluate effects of powdery mildew with respect to the oak decline. In order to record the powdery mildew incidence, we selected three trees in each of the ten investigated oak stands, and 200 leaves were collected from the upper part of the crowns. The percentage of infected leaves as well as the reduction of carbon assimilation capacity was assessed. Furthermore, we evaluated the average reduction of carbon assimilation capacity and the percentage of withering branch tips in 25 adjacent trees. Incidences of powdery mildew were observed in seven out of the ten stands. The maximum tree damage did not exceed 22% leaf infection and mean defoliation within the study areas ranged from 18% to 61.4%. Non-withering branch tips were observed in one post-flood area as well as in one area situated outside the flooded region. Within the remaining areas studied, the average proportion of withering branch tips ranged from 0.4% to 13.8%. Statistical analyses showed that differences between the investigated stands with regard to the rate of powdery mildew occurrence were not significant. Correlating the means, however, revealed a relationship between powdery mildew incidence and branch tip withering. This relationship is a possible indication of the ongoing oak dieback. No statistically significant relationship between tree defoliation and powdery mildew incidence was found. The lack of statistical significance, as observed here, implies that water stagnation within the investigated stands had no effect on Erysiphe alphitoides infection.

Opis:
Evidence has shown that drought-induced crown dieback has significant interaction with soil-plant water and nutrients relationships, but there isn’t sufficient knowledge of the water and nutrients connections in declining Persian oak (Quercus brantii) trees. To investigate the relationships between crown dieback and leaf nutrients concentrations, leaf water content, soil nutrients concentrations and soil moisture, one of the dieback affected stands was selected. This stand was located in Shalam forested area in northern Ilam province, west of Iran. Persian oak trees were evaluated using a crown dieback classification and divided into four classes with four replicates based on the severity of crown dieback. Sampling from leaves of trees and soil was implemented randomly in four sides of tree crown in August. Trees with moderate to severe declining showed reduced leaf water content (WC) and reduced relative leaf water content (RWC). Leaf N and P concentration of declining trees was significantly (p-value <0.05) more than that of healthy trees. The leaf K concentration of declining trees was significantly (p-value <0.10) more than that of the healthy. The leaf N:P amounts of oak trees was statistically different among crown dieback classes. But no significant differences was observed between the healthy and declining trees in terms of soil N, P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations and soil moisture. It was concluded that drought has effects on the nutrients status in the leaves of Persian oak trees and their changing in the declining trees is for resistance to drought condition, improving water use efficiency and possibly performance of vital activities.

Opis:
Distinct symptoms of oak decline, which occurred in the year 2004 on the area of the Wołów Forest District, prompted to determine the health condition of this species stands according to the European criteria i.e. on the basis of the defoliation degree. Oak stands in that area are exposed to the activity the Legnicko−Głogowski Copper Industry Region. Besides, the lowering of Odra riverbed, which in that area reaches 3 m, also exerts a significant effect on the functioning of the ecosystems. An estimation of the assimilation apparatus losses was carried out at the turn of July and August in 2005 and 2007 on the basis of an atlas elaborated by Borecki and Kęczyński [1992]. Data obtained in this way permitted to classify each tree into four defoliation classes from 0 to 3. In case of a dead tree, it was classified into the fifth class encoded as 4. In the first year of observation, the highest frequency (35.0%) was observed in defoliation class #2 i.e. in stands with medium damages. Class #1 included 33.6% of trees. The assessment was repeated two years later. The number of trees without defoliation symptoms decreased four times, while the number of trees with a strong defoliation and of dead trees increased.
