Purpose: The study was directed towards examination of nursing students’ attitudes towards environmental problems. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed from June to August 2014 with 296 first-fourth year nursing students from one nursing faculty located in Izmir. The data of the study were collected through conducting face-to-face interviews by using Socio-Demographic Characteristics Form and Environmental Problems Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Cronbach alpha, t-test and Mann Whitney U test were used in the data analysis. Results: Mean age of the students was 21.16±2.28 years. The fourth year students had higher scores for their attitudes to environmental problems. Female students, students taking a course about the environment before university, students becoming a member of environmental organizations had significantly higher scores for their attitudes to environmental issues. Conclusions: This study suggests that attitudes of students towards environmental problems can improve only after they are offered an effective education. Therefore, Syllabi should be designed to include environmental problems to increase knowledge and awareness of students and to acquire a positive attitude.

Introduction and aim. Nursing fields begin to face a wide variety of challenges when they first enter clinical practice. The aim of this study is to determine the difficulties experienced in patient communication by nursing students taking the clinical practice course for the first time. Material and methods. Focus group interview design was used for this study. Focus group design is used to give information about the opinions and experiences of the sample group on any subject. It is reported as a convenient design to identify different perspectives on a subject within the scope of the sample. Focus group interviews are a widely used method as data collection technique. Results. The findings of the study continue on 4 main themes at level 3, by identifying the similarities and differences in the codes determined by the three experts (researchers consulted and the researcher conducting/reporting the study). The findings of the study were evaluated in comparison with the findings of the studies reached in the literature and conducted in regions such as Israel, Iran, Sri-Lanka, Kenya, and Africa. Conclusion. There are many problems in student-patient communication in many different dimensions. The difficulties arising due to these problems generally focus on unknown clinical environment, lack of knowledge, differences between theory and practice, and mentor interaction.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction has been shown to be effective in reducing stress levels and developing emotional competencies in nursing students, however, in some countries such as Morocco, this practice remains unexplored. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a mindful- ness-based stress reduction program on nursing students. The study used a quasi-experimental design in a single pre- test-post-test group with 20 nursing students from the Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques of Tetouan. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Perceived Stress Scale in Clinical Practicum (PSS- CP), and the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS). The results of the study indicate that the students' mean score on the PSS-CP scale was 2.19 ± 1.35 in the pretest, but decreased to 1.89 ± 1.28 in the posttest (p < .05). While the students' mean EIS score was 3.44 ± 1.26 in the pretest, it in creased to 3.76 ± 1.19 in the posttest (p < 0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between perceived stress and EIS scores (r = 0.864, p < 0.05). Mindfulness-based stress reduction program training can improve psychological health by developing emotional competence and reducing stress in nursing students.

Opis:
Internet addiction has been identified as a major mental health problem, particularly among young nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Internet addiction in this population. This study adopts a descriptive, quantitative, and correlational approach among 388 nursing students enrolled in a Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques in Morocco. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Big Five Inventory (BFI) were used. A student-test was used to compare the differences in Internet addiction between different categorical groups. Pearson correlation was used to determine correlations between Internet addiction and personality traits. Linear regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of independent variable groups on Internet addiction. The overall prevalence of Internet addiction was 68.3% (AI > 30). There were significant differences in Internet addiction by age group (p = 0.001), gender (p = 0.004), grade (p = 0.003), and reasons for using the Internet (p = 0.004). Neuroticism (β = .493, p < .05) and extraversion (β = .479, p < .05) were positive predictors of Internet addiction, whereas agreeableness (β = -.461 p < .05) and conscientiousness (β = -.395, p < .05) were negative predictors. Personality traits are critical contributors when designing individualized intervention strategies that contribute to the prevention and reduction of Internet addiction in nursing students.

Introduction and aim. There is a gap in nursing student understanding, knowledge, and preventive behaviors concerning esophageal cancer. This study aimed to investigate knowledge, risk factors, and preventive behaviors among Turkish nursing students. Material and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed. The questionnaire was conducted online over a four-month period. A convenience sample of 688 undergraduate nursing students was recruited from health science faculty at three universities in Türkiye. The survey was performed using a self-administered questionnaire. The reliability coefficients of the knowledge test were calculated, yielding Cronbach’s alpha (0.952), KR-20 (0.952), and KR-21 (0.945), respectively. A significance level p<0.05 was accepted. Results. The mean age of the study group was 20±1.86 (min: 17, max: 32). The study group consists of 487 women (70.8%) and 201 men (29.2%). Most of the study population report never using alcohol and smoking (88.4%, 73.1%, respectively), and reported paying attention to oral hygiene (88.5%). Nursing students had a low family history of EC (0.4%), obesity (10.2%), and vitamin deficiency (19.2%) which are risk factors. Knowledge of esophageal cancer risks was low (x̄=14.34±9.53; Min=0; Max=31). Total knowledge scores have higher for students with complaints of EC, vitamin deficiency, and diagnosis of Human Papilloma Virus disease (p<0.05). Conclusion. This study showed that there are significant gaps in the knowledge of nursing students and these need to be addressed through an improved nursing curriculum. In this context, the study can be used as important evidence and a resource in the issues that should be given priority to in the training and research needed to increase the knowledge and awareness of future nurses about esophageal cancer.

Introduction and aim. The effective and safe administration of medication is the responsibility of every health care provider involved in patient care. One of the biggest problems with nursing education is the gap between theory and practice, which pave ways for medication errors to occur at any level of the medication administration process. This can be rectified by using an efficient teaching strategy that harmoniously blends nursing theory and practical skills. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the traditional teaching method versus simulation-based teaching method on level of knowledge, attitude, and practice on prevention of medication errors among nursing students in selected colleges, Puducherry. Material and methods. The research approach and design used for the study were quantitative approach and quasi-experimental pre and post-test control group design respectively. The study settings were selected 4 nursing colleges in Puducherry. The sample size was 100 (50 in experimental group I and 50 in experimental group II) which was selected by using simple random and stratified sampling technique. pre-test was done to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice on prevention of medication error for both experimental groups utilizing the self-administered knowledge, attitude questionnaire and checklist. The experimental group I received traditional teaching method and experimental group II received simulation-based teaching method. Post-test was done after one week using the same tool. Results. The study results revealed that out of 100 nursing students, majority 35 (70%) and 38 (76%) of the nursing students were in the age group of 20–21 years, 40 (80%) and 39 (78%) of them were female, 50 (100%) and 41 (82%) of them were staying as day scholars, 40 (80%) and 41 (82%) had one attempt to clear the pharmacology subject in the experimental group I and II respectively. The level of knowledge, attitude, practice showed a statistically significance difference at p<0.05 between the pre and post-test within the experimental group I and II respectively. The effective mean scores of knowledge, attitude and practice showed a statistically significance difference at p<0.05 between the experimental group I and II respectively, revealed that the simulation-based teaching method was more effective over the traditional teaching method. There was a significant positive correlation at p<0.05 exist between the level of knowledge and attitude, knowledge and practice in the experimental group I. The association between the post-test level of attitude and the gender variable showed a statistically significant at p<0.05 in the experimental group II. Conclusion. The study concluded that the simulation-based teaching method was effective which can be utilized as a means to educate the nursing students during their academic performance.

Introduction: One of the most important legal acts defining the profession of nurse and midwife is the Act of 15 July 2011. In order to consciously and responsibly carry out professional tasks, it is important to know it. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge of nursing and midwifery students on selected aspects of the nursing and midwifery act. Material and methods: The method of a diagnostic survey was used to create an original questionnaire consisting of a metric and questions directly related to the act. Appropriate calculations were made using the packages Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics, and basic descriptive statistics were analyzed using the U Mann-Whitney test and Spearman’s rho correlation. Results: 69.9% of the respondents had a low level of knowledge on selected issues of the act, and only 1% had a high level. No correlation was observed between students’ knowledge and the analyzed variables. Conclusions: The level of knowledge of students is unsatisfactory and indicates the need for training in the field of this act, because the aspects discussed therein are necessary for the proper and conscious performance of the professions of nurse and midwife.

Opis:
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignant cancer among women. Knowledge about the disease and regular checkups are a key factor in reducing the risk of its development. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of the nursing students about risk factors, clinical symptoms of breast cancer, disease prevention principles and attitudes towards preventive examinations depending on the stage of education. Material and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among students of the first (n = 30), second (n = 20) and third year (n = 31) of the nursing faculty at the undergraduate level. The research tool was an original questionnaire (29 questions). Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Kruskal-Wallis test, multiple comparison, test after Kruskall-Wallis the Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, the Spearman’s rank correlation coefi cient. Results: The third-year students gave signifi cantly more correct answers in the fi eld of knowledge about breast cancer than the fi rst-year students (Me 17 vs. 14). There was a moderate correlation between the level of knowledge and age (r = 0.41, p<0.05). The third-year students also performed breast self-examination more often than the second and the first-year students (55% vs 15% and 55% vs 30%). Last year only 32% of the respondents had a breast exam performed by a doctor and 26% of them reported that they had ever made breast ultrasound or mammography. For 44% of the students the most common source of information on breast cancer prevention were pamphlets, newspapers, leaflets and information from college. Conclusions: The level of knowledge of the nursing students at the undergraduate level about breast cancer prevention, risk factors and clinical symptoms is dependent on the age and stage of education, and is still insufficient. Despite the awareness that early detection of breast cancer improves the effectiveness of treatment, the students do not carry out preventive tests systematically.
Materiał i metody: Badanie ankietowe przeprowadzono wśród studentek pierwszego (n = 30), drugiego (n = 20) i trzeciego roku (n = 31) kierunku pielęgniarstwo na studiach pierwszego stopnia. Narzędziem badawczym był autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Analizę statystyczną przeprowadzono za pomocą testów: Shapiro-Wilka, Kruskala-Wallisa, porównań wielokrotnych, Chi2, Fishera, korelacji rang Spearmana. Przyjęto kryterium znamienności statystycznej p < 0, 05. Wyniki: Studentki trzeciego roku udzieliły istotnie więcej poprawnych odpowiedzi z zakresu wiedzy na temat raka piersi niż pierwszego roku (Me 17 vs 14), a zależność pomiędzy poziomem wiedzy i wiekiem badanych była przeciętna (r = 0,41; p < 0,05). Częściej też wykonywały samobadanie piersi niż studentki drugiego i pierwszego roku (55% vs 15% i 55% vs 30%).

Opis:
Introduction. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) are the diseases caused by germs transmitted during sex, starting with easy to treat inflammations, ending up with serious deadly infections. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare the knowledge among nursing students in Poland and Turkey about HPV, its etiology and diagnostics. Material and method. The survey was conducted in an academic year 2009/2010. The questionnaire was completed by nursing students from the University of Rzeszów in Poland and nursing students from Ataturk University, in Erzurum, Turkey. The choice of the research population was purposeful. The studies were conducted among the total number of 224 respondents, 120 in Poland and 124 in Turkey. Results. Nursing students have high self-rated knowledge about STD (93.0%). Books and journals (63.5%) were mentioned as the most common source of knowledge about sexual health. Among sexually transmitted diseases the respondents mentioned: AIDS (93.0%), gonorrhea (80.8%), HPV (56.5%), HSV (54.9%). Among the respondents 11.9% have never heard of HPV. Every third student does not have any knowledge about vaccinations against HPV (30.4%). Above 40% of respondents are not aware of the recommended frequency of cytological examinations (43,0%) and nearly 60% of them do not know what a colposcopy is. Conclusions. Students have high self-rated knowledge about STD. Students from Erzurum, Turkey had better knowledge about HPV diagnostics. Students from both countries showed unsatisfactory knowledge about cervical cancer diagnostics. The level of nursing students’ knowledge as future health educators, both in Poland and Turkey about HPV is insufficient, therefore it is necessary to add supplements about STD to nursing education programs in both countries .
Wstęp. Według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia infekcje przenoszone drogą płciową są to choroby/infekcje wywoływane przez drobnoustroje przekazywane podczas kontaktów intymnych, od łatwo wyleczalnych zapaleń do śmiertelnie groźnych infekcji. Cel. Materiał i metoda. Przebadano łącznie 224 osoby – 120 w Polsce i 124 w Turcji. Wyniki.
