The purpose of this study was to investigate intercultural sensitivity among nursing students in Turkey. This study is a cross-sectional study. It was conducted with nursing students at a university in Ankara. The sample comprised 152 nursing students at the university. This study was carried out between May 2013 and June 2013. Data were collected using an Interview Questionnaire and Intercultural Sensitivity Scale. The data were analysed using frequency, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. The study found out that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensitivity (88.92 ± 12.20). It was found that senior year students, the students who speak a foreign language and the students who had chosen the school willingly had higher scores of cultural sensibility (p < 0.05). The study found that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensivility. To increase intercultural sensitivity of nursing students it is recommended that the maintenance strategies and the concept of intercultural sensitivity should be integrated in the curriculum of nursing education and postgraduate training programs.

Introduction and aim. The COVID-19 pandemic, which affects the whole world, has also significantly affected nurses, nursing students and nursing academicians. This study aims to determine the experiences of nurse academicians and their perspectives on possible future pandemics. Material and methods. The study is a descriptive qualitative type. It was conducted in September-December 2022 in the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, of a university located in the west of Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 11 nurse academicians. Personal Information Form, Interview Form on COVID-19 Pandemic Experiences and voice recorder were used to collect data. Data analysis was done with content analysis. Results. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained from the interviews, four main themes emerged: (1) nurse academicians and nursing education in the pandemic, (2) the impact of the pandemic on life, (3) the gains in the pandemic, and (4) suggestions for future pandemics. Conclusion. As a result of this study, it was determined that nurse academicians’ families, social, and academic lives, and health were deeply affected during the pandemic, but they also found opportunities during the pandemic. It is thought that guidelines and action plans are needed to ensure the safety of nursing education for future pandemic-like situations and to minimize the problems experienced by academic nurses. For this, it is recommended to reconsider the technical possibilities and methods of education.

Opis:
ObjectivesThe aim of the study was to explore Polish nurses’ readiness to use the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) as part of continuous professional development and life-long learning.Material and MethodsThe study included 772 nurses, divided into 2 study groups. The first group comprised those who had participated in a course enhancing the knowledge and improving skills in the use of ICNP® terminology (N = 457). The second group comprised people who had not yet attended such a course (N = 315).ResultsIn the pre-course group, education correlated significantly with a general knowledge of ICNP® and its components, as the answers to 9 out of 13 questions revealed (p > 0.05). In the postcourse group, such a correlation was observed in the answers to all the questions except the following: “Is it possible to implement ICNP® in your place of work?” (ρ = 0.066, p = 0.137). Statistically significant differences were found when it comes to the correlation of all 13 questions and the results with the overall level of knowledge of ICNP®. A higher level of agreement with the questions and a higher level of knowledge were observed in the post-course group. However, this did not apply to the following question: “Is it possible to implement ICNP® in your place of work?” (Z = –0.06, p = 0.955, r = 0.002).ConclusionsEffective pre- and postgraduate education prepares nurses for working with ICNP® terminology. In fact, IT tools, implemented into the education process, could help to develop skills and the understanding of how nurses can use ICNP® in the nursing process. There are some obvious difficulties with the practical implementation of ICNP® into clinical practice. 2020;33(3):353–63

Opis:
Zdrowie i opieka zdrowotna należą do kluczowych zagadnień w życiu jednostki. Współczesne pielęgniarstwo zmierza do zapewnienia społeczeństwu coraz doskonalszej pod względem jakościowym opieki zarówno w chorobie, jak i zdrowiu. Ewolucje kształcenia pielęgniarskiego w Polsce przedstawiłam w zarysie w historii edukacji zawodu, aż do przedstawienia nowej koncepcji kształcenia na różnych poziomach, zgodnego z dyrektywami Unii Europejskiej.
Health and health service are the most important aspects in the life of individuals. Contemporary nursing aims at improving the quality of services, regardless of the patient’s condition. My thesis shows the evolution of nursing education in Poland in the form of an outline of professional education history up to the new concept of education at various levels which is based on certain EU directives. The idea of personnel development is essential and this is why the research problem focuses on the attitude of nurses towards the professional development as one of the elements of continuing professional development (CPD). The importance of this issue follows from the fact Mariola Wozowczyk 91 that the attitude towards the profession implies the quality of services. The analysis of the results of the questionnaire completed by chosen students of bridging studies at the Witelon University of Applied Sciences in Legnica plays an important role in clarifying the answer to the problem question. The final findings are presented in the form of numbers, percentage figures and charts.

Little is known about nurses’ viewpoints, experience, and opinions regarding this issue even though lifelong learning and distance education are of great importance in nursing. It is important to have knowledge about nurses’ lifelong-learning tendencies and attitudes toward distance education when structuring related education programmes. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between nurses’ lifelong-learning tendencies and their attitudes toward distance education. This is a descriptive research design with a stratified random sample. The sample included 417 nurses. The Lifelong-Learning Tendencies Scale and the Distance Education Attitude Scale were used to collect data. SPSS for Windows 16.0 was used for statistical analysis. Our results show that nurses do not tend to engage in lifelong learning, and they experience uncertainty in their attitudes toward distance education. We found a weak negative correlation between lifelong-learning tendencies and attitudes toward distance education. Continuing education programmes should be designed to improve and support nurses’ attitudes toward lifelong learning and distance education. Distance education supports nurses’ lifelong learning by updating their post-graduation knowledge improving comprehension about developments that affect and consciously broaden their viewpoint and intellectual level. Continuing education programmes to enhance nurses’ personal and professional development should be designed to improve their attitudes toward lifelong learning and distance education.

BackgroundInfluenza vaccinations are recommended for medical staff as an effective and safe form of preventing influenza and its complications. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of selected educational and information interventions on the influenza vaccination coverage (IVC) in nursing personnel and their attitude towards this procedure.Material and MethodsThe study participants (N = 320) were randomly divided into 4 groups. Group 1 participated in stationary training, whereas group 2 participated in distance learning. Additionally, 2 subgroups were established in each of the groups above: 1 subgroup received a reminder about the vaccination in the form of a short text message, and the other group did not receive any such reminder. The IVC rate in each group was determined; the attitude towards influenza vaccination was measured using the health belief model.ResultsThe highest IVC was obtained after stationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short test message (36%). The reminder significantly affected IVC in the group attending stationary training (p < 0.05, OR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.16–5.58); however, it had no impact on the IVC in the group participating in distance learning (p > 0.05, OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 0.51–2.83). Both stationary training and distance learning positively influenced the attitude towards influenza vaccinations. A major change in attitudes towards influenza vaccinations was observed only in the case of stationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short text message (positive changes in perceived susceptibility and severity took place, perceived vaccination benefits increased, and perceived barriers were reduced).ConclusionsStationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short text message is more effective in increasing the IVC rate compared to distance learning. It also promotes positive changes in attitudes to this prophylactic procedure, which is why it should be recommended for wider implementation.

Background: Candidates for nursing studies should be aware of the specific nature, social expectations and vocation associated with their future occupation. Aim of the study: To examine the enrollment motives among candidates for nursing studies at the Medical University of Warsaw. Material and methods: This study was conducted in a group of 200 candidates for nursing studies as part of the recruitment process. The study data were collected using a proprietary questionnaire with motives for selecting nursing studies classified as autotelic, instrumental, or incidental. The results were statistically analyzed using PQStat software ver. 1.4.2.324. Results: The most common autotelic motive reported by the candidates was the desire to help others (98%). Analysis of instrumental motives revealed that 89.5% of respondents identified guaranteed employment as a motivating factor whilst 70% stated the course was a means to achieve stable employment. The ease of enrollment was a motive for selecting nursing studies by 24.5% of respondents. The older the age of the candidates, the greater the contribution incidental motives for selecting nursing studies. Higher instrumental motives scores were more frequent among urban residents. Autotelic motives were stated more frequently by candidates choosing nursing as their first field of studies. Conclusions: 1. Autotelic motives were predominant in the choices made by candidates for nursing studies. 2. The age of the candidates, urban vs. rural residential status and the choice of nursing as the first field of studies were factors that significantly differentiated the motives for selecting nursing studies. 3. As part of the curriculum, the university should ensure that newly enrolled students have adequate opportunities to expand their interests in the chosen profession and to satisfy their aspirations.

Opis:
Purpose: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a critical technique in early detection of breast diseases, especially cancer. This quasi-experimental study was performed to evaluate the effects of BSE training on health beliefs and practices among relatives of nursing students. Materials and methods: The study sample consisted of 133 relatives of nursing students. After training student nurses about BSE, they were requested to train their relatives regarding BSE. The data were collected before and 6 months after BSE training. Results: It was determined that 39.1% (n=52) of women performed BSE before the training and 87.2% (n=116) of them after the training and this difference was statistically significant (p=0.0001). Sensitivity perception (Z=-2.915, p=0.004), benefit perception (Z=-4.888, p=0.0001) and confidence perception (Z=-2.503, p=0.012) of women significantly increased and disability perception (Z=-8.576, p=0.0001) decreased significantly after the training. Conclusions: In conclusion, the BSE training given by nursing students to their relatives enhanced health beliefs and practices of the participants.
