This is an extensive survey of methods for simulation of Gaussian random functions and fields on digital computers. Examples exist of smooth maps on the boundary of a smooth manifold M which allow continuous extensions over M without fixed points but no such smooth extensions. Such maps are studied here in more detail. They have a minimal fixed point set when all transversally fixed maps in their homotopy class are considered. Therefore we introduce a Nielsen fixed point theory for transversally fixed maps on smooth manifolds without or with boundary, and use it to calculate the minimum number of fixed points in cases where continuous map extensions behave differently from smooth ones. In the appendix it is shown that a subset of a smooth manifold can be realized as the fixed point set of a smooth map in a given homotopy class if and only if it can be realized as the fixed point set of a continuous one. A special case of this result is used in a proof of the paper.

The dual of a Banach space X is of weak type p if and only if the entropy numbers of an r-nuclear operator with values in a Banach space of weak type q belong to the Lorentz sequence space $ℓ_{s,r}$ with 1/s + 1/p + 1/q = 1 + 1/r (0 < r < 1, 1 ≤ p, q ≤ 2). It is enough to test this for Y = X*. This extends results of Carl, König and Kühn.

The paper gives an account of previous and recent attempts to determine the order of a smallest graph not containing K₅ and such that every 2-coloring of its edges results in a monochromatic triangle. A new 14-vertex K₄-free graph with the same Ramsey property in the vertex coloring case is found. This yields a new construction of one of the only two known 15-vertex (3,3)-Ramsey graphs not containing K₅.

In order to compute the Nielsen number N(f) of a self-map f: X → X, some Reidemeister classes in the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ need to be distinguished. In this paper some algebraic results are given which allow distinguishing Reidemeister classes and hence computing the Reidemeister number of some maps. Examples of computations are presented.

Opis:
In traditional statistics all parameters of the mathematical model and possible observations should be well defined. Sometimes such assumption appears too rigid for the real-life problems, especially when dealing with imprecise or linguistic data. To relax this rigidity fuzzy methods are incorporated into statistics. This paper is devoted to statistical inference about the population median in the presence of vague data. We propose the notion of fuzzy median. Then we suggest a fuzzy estimator and fuzzy confidence interval for the median. Next we discuss the problem of hypothesis testing concerning the median in the presence of imprecise data. All methods presented are distribution-free.

We deal with the linear functional equation (E) $g(x) = ∑^r_{i=1} p_i g(c_i x)$, where g:(0,∞) → (0,∞) is unknown, $(p₁,...,p_r)$ is a probability distribution, and $c_i$'s are positive numbers. The equation (or some equivalent forms) was considered earlier under different assumptions (cf. [1], [2], [4], [5] and [6]). Using Bernoulli's Law of Large Numbers we prove that g has to be constant provided it has a limit at one end of the domain and is bounded at the other end.
