The article discusses the issue of development of views on an atomic bomb and a nuclear war created by scientists, politicians, military commanders, as well as civilian strategists, starting from the vision of an atomic bomb as a herald of the New Deal, social and political, till the American military plans of a nuclear attack on hundreds of targets in the Soviet Union. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that the nuclear revolution which involved not only to military matters, but also strategy, international policy or war ethics was primarily linked to, apart from new technology, the idea of the future nuclear war and how its range, course and consequences were imagined.

The article discusses children’s fears and imaginings of an atomic bomb and a nuclear threat emerging in the memories of the Poles born in the second half of the 1960s and the 1970s. The sources used are ethnographic interviews conducted by the author of the study, Internet materials and memoirs. The author touches on the issue of transformations of the propaganda narratives concerning the nuclear threat in the subsequent periods of the People’s Republic of Poland, and the stages of the Cold War at the same time. Further, the article discusses the memories of this propaganda from the second half of the 1970s and the 1980s, the influence of family accounts and media reports, as well as concrete views on atomic weapons, the arms race and the disarmament process.

Ausgehend von Science-Fiktion-Texten aus Westdeutschland und den USA beschäftigt sich der Beitrag mit den Konsequenzen der fehlenden Wahrnehmbarkeit der Radioaktivität für die Imagination von mainstream-Texten. Gemeinhin wurde der epistemologische Bruch abgewehrt und literarisch an der Zurückgewinnung der Sinneswahrnehmungen gearbeitet. Die politische Bedeutung dieser Tendenz bestand in der Beruhigung von Ängsten, mit deren Hilfe man sonst des ‚prometheischen Gefälles‘ (Günther Anders) zwischen dem technisch Möglichen und der Phantasie hätte inne werden können.
Based on science-fiction texts from West Germany and the USA, the article deals with the consequences of the lack of perceptibility of radioactivity in the imagination of mainstream texts. In general, the epistemological break has been negated. Literary texts have tried to recover sensory perceptions. The political significance of this tendency has been the reassurance of fears that otherwise would have been inherent in the ‘Promethean gap’ (Günther Anders) between what is technically possible and imagination.

Issues discussed in post-apo fiction also gain popularity elsewhere. The devastated reality, within the a trend of alternative history is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. A good example is Apokalipsa według Pana Jana [Mr. John’s Apocalypse], with its panorama of radioactive deserts and completely devastated city. The present study analyzes the topography of the destroyed city of Wrocław in order to create a “map” of the new Fourth Republic, as well as to consider the social structures and the laws that organize the life of survivors and future generations in a new post-apo world.
Problematyka post-apo zatacza coraz szersze kręgi. Bohomaz zdewastowanej rzeczywistości włączającej się w nurt alternative history stanowi niewyczerpane źródło inspiracji. Doskonałym przykładem jest w tym kontekście Apokalipsa według Pana Jana, która panoramę radioaktywnych pustyń i spustoszonych miast przenosi na grunt Polski. Celem rozważań autorki jest analiza topografii zrównanego z ziemią Wrocławia, odtworzenie „mapy” IV Rzeczpospolitej, a także przyjrzenie się wyrastającym spod gruzów lechickiej krainy strukturom społecznym oraz prawu mającemu organizować życie ocalałych i całej przyszłej generacji.

The paper gives insight into the subject of culturally different ways of war-making. The objective is to further examine armed conflict in different societies and cultures. By analyzing key parameters and variables of the concept of war and strategy, the paper puts into focus cultural differences between the ways of making war by prominent military organizations. Unlike other publications, which elaborated in detail key features of warfare between various culturally different societies throughout history, this paper puts stress on strategy. Strategic culture is the dominant factor which decides how the society wages war.
Każda kultura ma swój sposób prowadzenia działań wojennych. Celem pracy jest zbadanie konfliktu zbrojnego w różnych społeczeństwach i kulturach. Analizując kluczowe parametry i zmienne dotyczące pojęcia wojny i strategii, autor koncentruje na różnicach kulturowych w sposobach prowadzenia wojny przez czołowe organizacje militarne. W przeciwieństwie do innych publikacji, które szczegółowo opisują kluczowe cechy działań wojennych pomiędzy społeczeństwami różnymi kulturowo na przestrzeni wieków, niniejsze opracowanie kładzie nacisk na strategię. Kultura strategiczna jest czynnikiem dominującym, który determinuje sposób, w jaki społeczeństwo prowadzi wojnę.

In the article I wonder about the reasons for the growing popularity of the postapocalyptic works in the pop culture of the early 21st century. The world after the collapse of the Western civilization is created in various literary, film and photographic forms, the examples of which I present in my study. The alternative post-apocalyptic reality is the postindustrial reality, archaized and non-anthropocentric. The technological regress presented in the works is based on imaginings of the end and is analogous to the fall of humanity among those people who survived after the “end” or were born afterwards. In the post-apocalyptic works of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries it can be noticed that the authors of the vision of world “after to end” abandoned an extremely negative tone.

Sylvia Plath is a kind of poet whose personal experience enlarges to the larger historical one. We can find it in her invocation of historical tragedies such as the Holocaust and Hiroshima. Plath uses these tragedies to reveal her anxieties under the pressure of the Cold War. In this paper, I write about her reference to the Holocaust in light of the specter of nuclear war. Plath produced a variety of poems in the last quarter of 1962. In October especially, in the month of the Cuban Missile Crisis which occurred at the height of the Cold War, she created 25 poems, which were later called the “October Poems”. It seems that her dominated anxieties triggered her to write a host of poems. This time I focus on Plath’s mother-child related poems. Her anxieties about the effects of nuclear bombs were directly connected to her children.

World War II marked the beginning of the forty-five years long period of tense peace, described as the Cold War. Two superpowers that emerged from World War II started to compete for hegemony over the world, representing two diametrically different political and economic systems. In any other historical period, such situation would lead to an inevitable great war, but after 1945 the competition was threatened by the possibility of using nuclear weapon whose capability of destruction was so enormous that neither of parties ventured direct confrontation. World War II contributed to scientific advancement that played a crucial role in the military progress of these states. The development of technologies assisting nuclear weapon resulted in a revolutionary change in military capability provided by the parties of the conflict. Rocket projectiles were the symbol of the 20th century, due to the fact that they carried humans into space, but also because they carried deadly weapon capable of killing hundreds thousands people. This combination of nuclear weapon with medium-range and intercontinental missiles caused that the world had to face permanent threat.

The article undertakes the analysis of social views on an atomic bomb in Stacja Abbesses by Stefania Zahorska. The author refers to the political context and proves that the forgotten short story is a literary voice of reason in the post-war discussion held in exile on the possibility of the outbreak of a new world conflict. However, this is also a fascinating record of the post-war state of the social consciousness of the nuclear threat, its course, effects etc., which can be regarded as the second thesis of the article.
