Opis:
A piece of work that requires the interplay of at least two different codes, e.g. written text and elements of design, is a multimodal text (Serafini 2011, 342). These include short or feature films, video games and comic books. The focus of this paper is comics, the non-interactive texts that, nevertheless, need a reader to be vivified (McCloud 1994, 36-37); a flexible platform for new ways of expression which often provides formidable challenges upon translation.Comic books, often referred to as graphic novels, have become a respected literary form often compared to novels rather than pulp fiction which they used to be classified as. Their growing cultural relevance and increasing recognition shift the gravity of choices made by translators working with these texts. Comics often take on much-debated themes, such as gender, feminism or postcolonial issues; that adds to the importance of comics in a current pop-cultural discourse.Nonetheless, the most unique aspect of these texts is their form, which incorporates static visual images organised “in deliberate sequence” (ibid., 7-9) and text. Even though there are instances of comics with no text, it usually is present; without the imagery, however, it makes little or no sense and vice versa. Moreover, the connection between text and image as well as between the images themselves may be intricate and multilayered, making it even more challenging for translators to tackle.Drawing on examples from classics such as Maus, V for Vendetta, Peanuts and the Asterix series, this paper expands on the aforementioned translation issues and underlines the cultural significance of comic books and graphic novels.

Opis:
This article discusses serialised novels published before 1918 in the Polish émigré press in the United States of America. These works were a popular feature of dailies and weeklies, but the periodicals’ regular financial difficulties meant that it was books published several years or indeed several decades earlier in Europe which were most often serialised. Consequently, most of the works that appeared in the periodicals failed to reflect contemporary literary trends while also overlooking subjects relevant to the everyday lives of Poles abroad. Still, the prevailing patriotic and historical themes complemented the values that many editorial boards subscribed to.

Opis:
Direct witness and thoughtful meditation are core values of content and form in the canon of French Great War fiction and were established from the earliest narratives in 1914. Moral authority and ownership of the truth were both the privilege of soldier-writers like Barbusse and Dorgelès, who also sought insightful meaning in their direct experience. Their works remain “in collective memory” and continue to be published, read, and analysed (Grabes). With the passage of time, the gaps in insights and memory of direct witness were fi lled by fi ction in the works of canonical post-memory writers (Rigney). The rediscovery and reappraisal of disparate elements of the war by historians and non-canonical genre writers restored value to some of these objects, such as executions and the reintegration of veterans into society, that had “fall[en] out of frames of attention” (Assmann). Crime fiction novels set during the Great War, by virtue of their non-canonical status as genre fiction, were not restrained by acknowledged and often depreciatory imperatives of form and content. Unencumbered by these canonical constraints, the works of crime fi ction writers tell a “counter-history,” thus transferring a proscribed and obfuscated subject to the public sphere (Assmann).

As a « relational concept », alterity can only be defined in opposition to what sociologists call a « referential group », an entity which dictates political, religious or cultural norms in a concrete society. Our article will first explain the difference between simple « diversity » and real « alterity », which is perceived as a potential source of threat by the majority society. Using concrete figures from 19th and 20th century Quebec novels, we will illustrate various types of alterity and the general evolution of Canadian mentality in relation to various minorities.

Today's educators should be well-aware of the world of the 21st century; a world that is characterised by a constant technological advancement, a fierce economic competition, a diversified digital village at the end of a fingertip, and unforeseen pandemics and crises. Teachers need to develop innovative methods to allow their learners to successfully cope with the requirements of the 21st century. At present, students are digitally-oriented in need of skills and competencies that empower them to smoothly understand and critically engage in dialogue with the world they live and work in. A vivid incarnation of the  principles of  multiliteracy approach is the edited book entitled Films, Graphic Novels and Visuals: Developing Multiliteracies  in Foreign Language Education- An Interdisciplinary Approach by Daniela Elsner, Sissy Helff and  Britta Viebrock.

Opis:
The article is devoted to Russian translations of crime novels by Maciej Słomczyński written under pen name Joe Alex. Since their publication the works were very popular both in Poland and the Soviet Union where they were translated without obtaining author’s consent. Mystification in M. Słomczyński’s books concerns not only realities (the plot is set in ageless England) but is also present in the language layer in which numerous foreignness-related signals can be found. Englishstylised language of the novels at times interferes in the narrative cohesion of the text. The study focuses on the possibility of reflecting these issues in translation.

Opis:
In this article entitled Oksana Robski’s (Not Only) Literary Projects we would liketo briefly present the figure of Oksana Robski, an author of romance novels whois not very well known in Poland, but is very popular in Russia. The collapse ofthe Soviet Union resulted in commercialization of Russian literature, which, among other things, made some writers use various publicity stunts. Among suchstunts, conceiving the so-called “literary projects” comes to the fore. Robski, whoturned her name into a brand, is a prime example here. The writer is associatedwith both sale of colour magazines, luxury furniture or perfumes, as well as withwriting popular romance novels. In order to create the appropriate media image,Robski distorts her own biography and freely talks in the media about her relationshipswith men. However, her popularity is mostly due to the fact that sheknows first-hand the life of Russian oligarchs who are protagonists of her works. Thanks to Oksana Robski’s novels, ordinary Russians have the opportunity to fictionallyvisit residences of the Russian business elite.

Opis:
This article compares British novelist Julian Barnes’s novel A History of the World in 10½ Chapters with the novel The Incomplete Manuscript by Azerbaijani author Kamal Abdulla. In each novel accepted history is revised, the idea that history is subjective is explored, as well as the fact that history is fiction, and in the process a new alternative history is written. The postmodern liberation strategy of both authors emphasizes history, past revision, history’s subjectivity, as well as the creation of a new alternative history to make history fictitious. The idea of history, catastrophe, error and human foolishness in Barnes’s novel is similar to the ideas of a fictitious, imagined, authenticated reality in Abdulla’s novel. This form of narration in Barnes’s and Abdulla’s novels is concerned with the ironic modes of 20thcentury thinking and the fact that human thinking has cast doubt on our understanding of the world. In Barnes’s novel, history is a catastrophe, an erroneous ghost, while in the novel by Abdulla we find fiction, fabrication, and reality.
