Opis:
The use of weak masculine nouns in German challenges the established grammatical and theoretical concepts by its variation in inflection. In this paper two typically weak nouns „Mensch“ and „Bauer“ are looked at in German Referential Corpus (DeReKo) under consideration of their polysemic qualities. The focus is on whether the meaning or the source can be considered a factor for the formal variation. Qualitative and quantitative analyses from this perspective confirm earlier approaches and provide it with more nuance. All the meanings of both nouns show variation in their inflection regardless of the source. However, more dependence is noticeable between the source and the variation than between any meaning and the variation.

Tematem artykułu jest analiza polskich i ukraińskich rzeczowników zaliczanych z punktu widzenia gramatycznej kategorii liczby do subkategorii singulare tantum. Wśród rzeczowników materialnych wyróżniono pewną liczbę grup semantycznych. Przeanalizowano sposoby i pokazano podobieństwa i różnice w rejestracji rzeczowników omawianej kategorii w słownikach języka polskiego i ukraińskiego. Zbadano znaczenia, które te rzeczowniki, użyte w liczbie mnogiej, przybierają w kontekstach. Rzeczowniki nazywające w liczbie pojedynczej określone substancje materialne mogą w liczbie mnogiej modyfikować zakres znaczenia, wskazując na: wyrób, porcję, rodzaj, dużą ilość danej substancji oraz przestrzeń, terytorium, na którym mieści się substancja. Znaczenie form liczby mnogiej części rzeczowników jest przedstawione w słownikach, jednak modyfikacji znaczeń ‘rodzaj danego przedmiotu lub substancji’ i ‘duża ilość danego przedmiotu lub substancji’ słowniki obu języków nie rejestrują. Formy liczby mnogiej Rzeczowniki materialne singularia tantum z reguły są używane w tekstach literatury naukowo-technicznej i pięknej, w języku mówionym, mogą mieć charakter ekspresywny
In the article the analysis of the nouns of material singularia tantum is given in the light of the grammatical category of number in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. Semantic groups of nouns that belong to the nouns of material are distinguished. Methods are analysed and the difference in the recording of the nouns singularia tantum in the dictionaries of the Polish and Ukrainian languages is shown. Meanings that these nouns get when used in the plural are investigated. Plural forms of the nouns of material singularia tantum in the both languages may mean: ‘item’, ‘portion, ‘variety’, ‘great number’. In the Ukrainian language these nouns may have the meaning ‘area filled with certain material’. The meanings of plural forms of some nouns are recorded in dictionaries, however the dictionaries of the both languages do not record the meanings ‘variety’ and ‘great number’. Plural forms of the nouns of material singularia tantum are used, as a rule, in the texts of scientific and fiction literature, spoken language, can be of expressive character

Agent Nouns with the Suffix -čí from a Diachronic PerspectiveThis article deals with agent nouns formed with the suffix -čí (lovčí m.), attested both in the Old Czech and the Middle Czech period. The study provides their formal and semantic description and compares their word-formation development. In particular, it further examines the relations between agent nouns formed by the suffixes -cě, -ec (lovec) and adjectives ending with -í derived from those nouns (lovčí adj.).Nomina agentis z przyrostkiem -čí w ujęciu diachronicznymArtykuł omawia nomina agentis utworzone za pomocą przyrostka -čí (lovčí m.), poświadczone zarówno w okresie staroczeskim, jak i średnioczeskim. Autorka charakteryzuje te jednostki z punktu widzenia formalnego i semantycznego i porównuje ich rozwój słowotwórczy. Analiza koncentruje się na relacjach pomiędzy nomina agentis utworzonymi za pomocą przyrostków -cě, -ec (lovec) a przymiotnikami z końcówką -í, które są ich derywatami (lovčí przym.).

The aim of the article is to outline the main differences and similarities in the ways spatial relations are expressed by means of prepositions in English and in Polish. The discussion starts with classifying the two languages within the same system of space conceptualization. Then, a description of prepositions is presented. The article concludes with the comparison of the dynamic aspects of the Polish prepositions do ‘to’, ‘into’, w ‘in’, ‘into’ and na ‘on’, ‘onto’ and their English equivalents to, in and on. Next, the main emphasis will be put on the way space is structured in Polish by means of other spatial terms, which include prefixes to the verbs, direction nouns and noun cases.

Role-playing games (RPG) provide a great opportunity to research creative word-formation. This article concentrateson RPG systems and represented worlds as well as proper nouns that can be found in them. The author presents the history of RPG, explains the core elements of the games (such as Game Master or RPG session) and compares the most popular and important systems. The article also explains how players create the names for their characters. The analysis is based on the examples taken from the Fallathan’s Chronicles game.
Artykuł dotyczy systemów RPG, światów przedstawionych oraz onimii w grach tego typu. Przedłożono nie tylko historię gier role-playing, lecz także opisano najbardziej znane, a zarazem kluczowe systemy RPG. W artykule wyjaśniono również, czym są gry RPG, jakie elementy składają się na rozgrywkę, np. kim jest Mistrz Gry lub co to jest sesja. Na przykładzie imion z gry Kroniki Fallathanu autorka wskazała, w jaki sposób gracze tworzą miana swoich postaci.

On the basis of corpus-derived data, the present paper examines the collocational patterns of the singular and the plural forms of a pair of etymologically and semantically related quantifying nouns (QNs), namely English heap and its Polish equivalent kupa ‘heap’. The primary aim is to determine their respective levels of numeralization, operationalized as the frequency of co-occurrence with animate and abstract N2-collocates in purely quantificational uses, in an attempt to establish whether, and to what extent, the addition of the plurality morpheme bears on the grammaticalization of a nominal of this kind into an indefinite quantifier. Following the observations arrived at by Brems (2003, 2011), the hypothesis is that pluralization should yield a facilitating effect on the numeralization of nouns referring to large quantities by amplifying their inherent scalar implications. The results demonstrate that whereas heaps indeed exhibits a higher percentage of such numeralized uses than heap, kupy ‘heaps’ has turned out to be grammaticalized in the quantifying function to a markedly lesser degree than kupa ‘heap’. It is argued that this apparently aberrant behaviour of kupy ‘heaps’ can nonetheless be elucidated in terms of the specificity of numeralization in Polish, since at its advanced, morphosyntactic stage, the process in question affects solely the singular (accusative) forms of QNs.

It is a long-acknowledged fact that in a wide number of Indo-European languages, some noun phrases occur solely in the plural. As for the French language — the only one concerned in this study — examples as les semailles, les pourparlers, les environs, les pantalons, etc., are very common ones. A subclass of these plural invariable nouns (Pluralia tantum), shows specific properties, e.g., the noun phrase does not behave like a collective noun; it differs in meaning from the version in singular, and the version in plural is always diachronically posterior to the one in singular. The main point is that these plural nouns seem to involve a limited class of verbs in a privileged way. The main purpose of this study is then to question the status of support verb of these verbs, as well as their role in a possible process of idiomatization.

Non official names of secondary schools This article registers and describes non oficial names of secondary schools, made by teenage community. Analysed lexical innovations reveal affinity to the group, which uses “its” language called by linguists youth slang, sociolekt, pupils or teenage lingo or pupils jargon. Examined formative neologisms reflect general development tendencies of the language – tendency for efficiency, which is realised in tendency for using acronims and tendency for creating expressive forms. The article emphasises that non oficial names are created not only for naming purposes but mainly pragmatic ones. In the thesis few reflections are shown which are linked to correctness of analysed secondary names, as there are doubts as to the correctness of their spelling and lexical-semantic cohesion.

The paper contains a historical linguistic analysis of the noun biegun. It was prompted by the inflectional form of the plural nominative bieguni, the title of one of Olga Tokarczuk’s novels, a form unusual from the point of view of the contemporary Polish grammatical system. Tokarczuk used the form ending in -i, typical of masculine personal nouns, while the word biegun is commonly known to be used nowadays only in meanings that do not refer to people. This is why the paper attempts to gain insight into the semantics of the lexeme biegun in the history of the Polish language. The research carried out made it possible to determine that the examined unit used to function in many personal meanings in the past, meanings that would eventually become obsolete with the gradual lexicalization of the word biegun and in relation the appearance of its derivational synonyms in the Polish language. Tokarczuk thus revived some of the old meanings of the word biegun referring to people, and at the same time brought out new, metaphorical meanings embedded in it in potentia – thus delexicalizing the examined unit.

The issue of countability and uncountability of English nouns may seem simple – nouns are count when their designations can be counted, and mass when they cannot (e.g., Huddleston & Pullum, 2002, p. 334). Consequently, we might expect that lexicographic characteristics of nouns will be generally unequivocal: count or mass. However, a closer analysis of this issue reveals several fundamental problems of grammatical and lexicographic nature. The article analyses how grammatical problems with such classifications translate into lexicographic practice. The analysis focuses on five reputable dictionaries of English and their approaches to the issue of countability and uncountability of selected nouns.

It is not fully known whether nouns or verbs are easier to learn in a second language. A noun learning advantage has been observed for children in many languages (e.g., Gentner, 1982), but few have examined whether mature second language learners show a similar pattern. In the current study 84 university students were trained with nonce words for 96 familiar, concrete concepts (half nouns, half verbs), half labeled ostensibly, and half in contexts that allowed label meanings to be inferred. Vocabulary knowledge was assessed through recognition tests after a delay of either five minutes or one week. No evidence of a word class advantage was found-participants did not demonstrate a noun advantage. Ostensive training was superior to inferential training at five minutes but not after one week.
