Opis:
An unusual, exotic, ammonite fauna including Romaniceras mexicanum Jones, 1938, Prionocyclus hyatti (Stanton, 1894) and Coilopoceras cf. springeri Hyatt, 1903 is recorded from the late Middle Turonian of Vaucluse and Gard, southern France. It is the first record of this ammonite association outside the Gulf Coast region and the Western Interior of the United States of North America. Up to present, these species were considered as endemic to the Western Interior sea-way. The migration of numerous ammonites from North America to western Europe during the late Middle Turonian suggests it is linked to a transgressive event or to a short sea-level high.

Opis:
The affinities of the Early Permian synapsid Tetraceratops insignis have been reevaluated several times since the early 20th century, being considered as an eothyridid, a sphenacodontid, or a therapsid. This controversy continues into the 21st century, with recently raised doubts about the interpretation of Tetraceratops as the oldest known therapsid, a hypothesis supported by the only redescription of this fossil in the second half of the 20th century. Our study examines the arguments proposed to refute therapsid affinities, and concludes that Tetraceratops indeed is the sister−group of all other known therapsids. The most recently published phylogenetic data matrix that includes Tetraceratops fails to confirm its therapsid affinities. However, adding seven characters to that matrix leads to the conclusion that Tetraceratops is the basal−most and oldest therapsid. The recent suggestion of a Laurasian origin of therapsids appears poorly supported; too few data are available on the distribution of Permian synapsids to settle this question.

Opis:
Paranyctoides is represented by three named, and possibly four unnamed species in the Late Cretaceous, North America. P. aralensis from the Late Cretaceous of Dzharakuduk, Uzbekistan, belongs in this or a closely allied taxon. Lower molars have low trigonids, well-developed paraconids not appressed against metaconids, talonids on ml-2 as wide or wider than trigonids, hypoconulids often closer to entoconids than to hypoconids. Only two upper molars are known, both have comparatively narrow crowns with wide stylar shelves and stylar cusps, paracone and metacone separated, conules well developed, and protocone low. Pre- and postcingula vary from narrow in one, Sailestes quadrans, to wide in the other, Paranyctoides sp. Sailestes quadrans may be an metatherian. All known species of Paranyctoides from North America have a submolarifom ultimate premolar while Gallolestes pachymandibularis, also from North America, has molars not unlike those in Paranyctoides but may have an ultimate premolar with a molarifom trigonid. A specimen from Dzharakuduk referable to P. aralensis is suggestive of such morphology. At least P. aralensis had five premolars with the third reduced as in 'zhelestids'. These findings increase the Late Cretaceous North American/Asian ties even more for eutherians, now with 'zhelestids' and the Paranyctoides/Gallolestes clades known from both.
Znaleziska te potwierdzają związki późnokredowej fauny Eutheria Ameryki Północnej i Azji, tym razem w przypadku znanych z obydwu kontynentów kladów ,,zelestidów" i Paranyctoides/Gallolestes.

Opis:
We investigate for the first time the species composition and community structure of lobose thecamoebians (Arcellinida) inhabiting an unpopulated and pristine island from the southeastern Pacific. Results revealed low alpha diversity and a high proportion of cosmopolitan species. One genus, four species and two subspecies were identified for the first time for southwestern South America. Further, four morphotypes were not identifi ed to species level, and one could not be identifi ed to species or genera level. They are probably endemics of this poorly studied and remote zone. These results were consistent with the moderate endemicity hypothesis of microbial biogeography. We hypothesized that the low diversity of species recorded on the island is due to selective colonization-extinction dynamics, processes that determines the low species richness of insular macro-organisms. However, this hypothesis needs to be evaluated in the future. Statistical analysis showed that testate amoebae were distributed in two discrete communities in the island. The first consisted of organisms inhabiting habitats located within a forest and the second by organisms inhabiting habitats located outside the forest. The suggested primary factor differentiating these both communities was the availability of appropriate habitat for the different species of testate amoebae.

Bernikla kanadyjska Branta canadensis (Linnaeus, 1758) jest ikoną dzikiej Ameryki i należy, zarówno do naturalnego, jak i społeczno-kulturowego, dziedzictwa Ameryki Północnej. Ten monogamiczny, gromadny i migrujący gatunek majestatycznego ptaka wodnego jest szeroko rozpowszechniony w Ameryce Północnej. Występuje w 8-10 różnych podgatunkach w szerokim spektrum naturalnych siedlisk i ekosystemów. Gatunek jest rozpowszechniony od Alaski przez Kanadę, USA aż do Meksyku. Aby uniknąć trudnych warunków zimowych, migruje z północy do południowych stanów USA i północnego Meksyku.

Opis:
A half-century of forest inventory research involving statistically-valid fieldmeasurements (using statistically representative sample size and showing confidence limits) and well-validated forecasting methods are reviewed in this paper. Some current procedures overestimate global and large-scale forest biomass, carbonstorage, and carbon sequestering rates because they are based on statistically-invalid methods (errors in estimates are unavailable and unreported), or they fail to consider key dynamic characteristics of forests. It is sometimes assumed that old-growth forests can serve as fixed, steady-state storage of biomass and carbon for indefinitely long periods, but it is shown by both modelling and remote sensing that forests are dynamic systems, the state of which can change considerably over as shorta time as a decade. Forecasting methods show that maximum biomass and carbon storage in some important forest types occurs in mid-succession, not in old-growth. It is proposed, therefore, that realistic biomass and carbon storage estimates used for carbon credits and offsets be determined as the statistical mean minus the confidence interval and that practical carbon sequestering programs include specific timeframes, not indefinitely long periods of time.

Recent discoveries of more than ten new species of tyrannosauroid theropods are helping to understand the origin and evolu− tion of colossal body size and other characteristic features of Tyrannosaurus rex and its terminal Cretaceous relatives. Partic− ularly important has been the discovery and reinterpretation of Late Jurassic tyrannosauroids from Europe and North Amer− ica, which are intermediate in size and phylogenetic position between small basal tyrannosauroids and the largest Late Cre− taceous species. The fragmentary nature of these Jurassic specimens, however, has frustrated attempts to understand their systematics and phylogeny. A new specimen from the Late Jurassic of England was recently named as a new species (Stokesosaurus langhami) of the genus Stokesosaurus, which is known from several fragmentary fossils from North Amer− ica. We review the systematics and phylogeny of these European and North American specimens and show that there are no unequivocal synapomorphies uniting them. Furthermore, a revised phylogenetic analysis does not recover them as sister taxa. This necessitates a taxonomic revision of this material, and we name a new genus (Juratyrant) for theBritish specimen.

The primitive number of premolars for most eutherian groups is four. A growing number of Cretaceous taxa, however, had five. Regardless of the hypothesis used to explain the discrepancy, or what the primitive condition was, it is generally agreed that the middle (third) tooth of five-premolared taxa is the one not represented in mammals that have only four premolars. Hence the current practice of labeling the teeth as the first through fifth and the first through fourth, depending on how many teeth are observed in the jaw, results in incorrect implied homologies for the last two premolars of the series. Given the long-standing tradition of referring to the premolars as the first through fourth, for most eutherian groups, together with the uncertainties involved in interpreting the difference, the most practical solution is to refer to the disputed tooth by a neutral term, 'Px', as advocated several decades ago.

Opis:
“Pediomyids” are a diverse group of smallto medium−sized marsupials which comprise a significant portion of many Late Cretaceous North American mammalian faunas. Known almost exclusively from isolated teeth and jaw fragments, “pediomyids” exhibit far more diversity than any other contemporaneous group of North American mammals. This has led some to suggest that the family “Pediomyidae” is an artificial, polyphyletic assemblage composed of multiple lineages that independently acquired various traditionally−recognized “pediomyid” molar characters, such as a reduction of the anterior stylar shelf, reduction of the stylocone and a labial shift in the attachment of the cristid obliqua. The present study seeks to elucidate the interrelationships of “pediomyid” marsupials and test the monophyly of the group using cladistic methodology, including a broad sampling of Late Cretaceous North American taxa and a comprehensive set of qualitative molar characters. Results suggest that the family “Pediomyidae” and the genus “Pediomys” are both polyphyletic and are in need of systematic revision. Iqualadelphis lactea (Aquilan) appears to be unrelated to the “pediomyid” radiation, and rests as a stem taxon near the base of the cladogram. The large Aquilan Aquiladelphis nests in a trichotomy with a strictly−defined “Pediomyidae” and the enigmatic Lancian taxon Glasbius, suggesting the possibility of a distant relationship (above the familial level). Three clades are recognized within the “Pediomyidae”: a restricted Pediomys, Leptalestes gen. nov. (containing the three smallest species), and Protolambda (containing the remaining three larger species). Results suggest that “Pediomys” exiguus is a stem taxon lacking a close relationship to Pediomyidae sensu stricto, and is removed to permit recognition of the family as monophyletic. The results carry implications for the role “pediomyids” might have played in the initial North American marsupial radiation sometime prior to the Campanian, and the pattern of molar evolution throughout major Late Cretaceous lineages.

A global census of published records of dinosaur skin from the Mesozoic, cross-referenced against a more detailed lithological dataset from the Maastrichtian of North America, clarifies why most examples of fossilized dinosaur skin come from hadrosaurids. Globally, more published specimens of hadrosaurids exhibit preserved skin than any other major clade of dinosaur. North American Maastrichtian hadrosaurid fossils are 31 times more likely to have skin preserved than coeval dinosaur remains. This does not arise from collection methodology, the large population size of hadrosaurids, or the gross lithology of their depositional environment. The reason that so many hadrosaurid fossils have skin is still elusive, but was likely something intrinsic to hadrosaurids that originated early on in the clade, perhaps the possession of tougher or thicker skin. The database of published examples of fossilized dinosaur skin assembled here will assist the continued development of a much needed common terminology and taxonomic framework for dinosaur skin.

Diverse atrypid brachiopod faunas characterize very late Givetian-early Frasnian deposits of Devonian Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) cycle IIb in North America which feature species of Desquamatia (Seratrypa), Desquamatia (Independatrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypina (S.), S. (Exatrypa), Spinatrypa (S.), Davidsonia, and possibly Iowatrypa Middle Frasnian faunas are not well documented in much of North America. Middle Frasnian deposits of T-R cycle IIc in the Great Basin, Iowa, and the southern Northwest Territories and Mackenzie shelf feature species of Neatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, D. (Seratrypa), Spinatrypa, and possibly Costatrypa. Radiatrypa does not carry over into late Frasnian rocks of T-R cycle IId in North America. Genera common to late Frasnian deposits of T-R cycle IId-1 in central and western North America include widespread species of Pseudoatrypa, Spinatrypa, Costatrypa, Iowatrypa. D. (Seratrypa) and Neatrypa were restricted to the tropical platforms of western Canada at that time. Very late Frasnian brachiopod faunas of T-R cycle IId-2 yield species of Pseudoatrypa, Spinatrypa, Iowatrypa, and Pseudoatrypa? (southwest US only). Available data on Late Frasnian brachiopod records in North American subtropical platforms (New Mexico and Iowa) indicate that two successive stepped late Frasnian extinction events affected those faunas, coinciding with the Lower Kellwasser Event and the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) Event. Over half of the atrypid genera represented in late Frasnian North American faunas survived the first wave of extinctions (Lower Kellwasser Event). The surviving species, recorded in very late Frasnian deposits of Devonian T-R cycle IId-2, became extinct during the final crisis associated with the F-F Event.

An earliest Famennian (Late Devonian) shell bed was discovered in the Hanover Shale Member of the Java Formation 1.4 meters above the Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) boundary in western New York. The invertebrate shelly fauna of the shell bed (Lower Palmatolepis triangularis conodont Zone), provides information on taxonomy of an outer shelf benthic association during the survival interval of recovery in the Appalachian foreland basin soon after the terminal Upper Kellwasser event marking the F–F mass extinction. Shelly invertebrates are extremely rare in the upper Hanover immediately above and below the shell bed. Abundance of brachiopod valves and remains of other groups in the shell bed reach 80–100 valves/100 cm2. Elongate valves of the linguloid brachiopod Barroisella cf. B. campbelli have preferred alignments roughly parallel to direction of down−slope flow in the deep−water foreland basin depositional setting. The brachiopod fauna is dominated by the representatives of Retichonetes, Barroisella, Cyrtospirifer, Tylothyris, and Praewaagenoconcha. Rare elements include species of Thiemella, Schizophoria, Ripidiorhynchus?, Chapinella?, an indeterminate rhynchonellid, Ambocoelia, and extremely rare Orbiculoidea. Forms including Cyrtospirifer hornellensis, Tylothyris mesacostalis, Praewaagenoconcha speciosa, and few others are late Frasnian carryovers. The range inception of Thiemella leonensis is just above the F–F boundary (Upper Kellwasser horizon) in the upper Hanover Shale shell bed in the western Appalachian foreland basin.

The brachiopod fauna of the Middle-Late Devonian cratonic carbonate platform deposits of the Iowa Basin, central North America, contains twenty species of the order Atrypida, some of which are types for widespread genera common in Middle and Late Devonian faunas. The latest Givetian-early Frasnian deposits yield a diverse fauna consisting of ten species (two new) included in Desquamatia (Independatrypa), D. (Seratrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa) and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa). Many of these forms occur in, or are closely similar to species known from, coeval faunas of central and western Canada. Middle Frasnian deposits of northern Iowa contain two species included in Spinatrypa (S.) and Pseudoatrypa, both of which are new. Late Frasnian strata of the Iowa Basin yield eight species included in Costatrypa, Iowatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, and Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa), some of which are widespread in other subtropical and tropical faunas of the western US and western Canada. The taxa Pseudoatrypa witzkei sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) bunkeri sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) thompsoni sp. n., and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa) johnsoni sp. n. are proposed. Pseudoatrypa? sp. from the very late Frasnian of southern New Mexico is also illustrated.
