Opis:
The paper presents the investigation results concerning the origin and transformation of the morainic landscape in the northwest part of Lubawa Upland. Detailed sedimentological studies of the sediments within the morainic hill in Rożental and the reconstruction of their depositional and deformational processes are presented. We proposed a model of landscape formation and transformation in examined area. The reconstruction of the palaeogeographical conditions which have been prevailed during the late Pleistocene is also proposed. Collected data show that morainic landscape in the northwestern part of Lubawa Upland reveal landforms of an older origin. It is suggested that relief of examined area consist some features of "palimpsest landscape". The older glacial landforms, formed before the last ice advance, can exist here.

Opis:
The community of Ukrainian origin in Warmia and Mazury is not often the object of research due to the fact that it is strongly involved in ideology and politics, which makes it difficult to draw a boundary between propaganda and its actual problems. What contributed to the transformation of the Ukrainian culture into the North-East Poland were activities of those Ukrainian communities that migrated into this region in the course of „Wisła” action in 1947. The research that the author conducted in a group of Ukrainian teenagers in 2004 casts a new light onto the community, making it possible to characterize the continuously evolving problems of its existence. The approach to this topic highlights the way in which the Ukrainian minority, tom apart from its original environment, deals with its problems and is gradually integrating into the new reality. It also focuses on the analysis of differences concerning mutual relations. In time. the awareness of the Ukrainian community members has lost its demanding nature, and has become filled with invention and initiative, thus resembling the awareness that the hosts of their new motherland should display. It is very interesting to notice that the Poles are often participants in the cultural events organized by the Ukrainians.

Antropogeniczne wylesianie zlewni Wisły, rolnicze zagospodarowanie gruntów spowodowało wzmożenie erozji w dorzeczu i osadzanie materiału skalnego w delcie. W X-XVI wieku rzeka dobudowała deltę u ujścia północnych odnóg Szkarpawy i Leniwki. Od renesansu główny nurt Wisły skierowany został Nogatem i tam rzeka osadzała najwięcej aluwiów. Mieszkańcy Żuław przyspieszali proces powiększanie lądu. Sypali wały, tworzyli poldery. Począwszy od końca XIX wieku w wyniku przekopania nowego ujścia i skierowania 90% wód Wisły bezpośrednio do morza, przyrost delty jest znacznie wolniejszy. Jest on głównie wynikiem akumulacji obumarłych części organicznych.
Accumulation of the deposits in the Vistula Lagoon was continuous, even though quite slow. Starting with the Middle Ages the increments of land have been rather quick. Deforestation of the Vistula river basin and agricultural land development triggered off erosion. The rocky material was deposited in the delta. Initially, the river had been building the delta at the mouth of the northern branches of Szkarpawa and Leniwka. In the period of Renaissance the main current was directed through the Nogat channel and it is there that the river deposited most of the alluvia. The inhabitants of Zulawy delta lowlands accelerated themselves the process of land extension. They built walls and established polders. Starting with the end of the 19th century, due to the digging of the new river channel and the fact that thereby 90% of discharge was directed straight to the sea, the increase of the delta has been much slower. It is primarily the effect of accumulation of the dead organic parts.

The geotourism potential of ten geosites, occurring within the Drawskie Lake District, north-western Poland, was evaluated to demonstrate the need for the establishment of a geopark named “Postglacial land of the Drawa and Dębnica rivers”. Each site was investigated in respect of its scientific (geological and geomorphological), educational, economic, conservation, and added values. It has been found that two geosites, being also cultural heritage sites (Drahim Castle and Pottery Settlement in Sikory), have the greatest geotourism potential. Different aspects of inanimate nature are promoted in both geosites. Thanks to the existence of such objects there is a good chance for the successful development of geotourism, which is a tool for the sustainable socio-economic development of the region.

The article presents 20 geosites located on five geotourist paths and their closest vicinity, constituting the initial part of the planned geopark Postglacial land of Drawa and Dębnica. Geosites represent the most valuable abiotic resources, proving the large geodiversity of the studied area. These are: 1. glacial and fluvioglacial accumulation forms (e.g.: terminal end-moraine of the Parsęta lobe, undulating moraine uplands, glacial deposits including erratic border boulders, esker ridges), 2. glacial and fluvioglacial erosive forms (e.g.: channel and melt-out-depressions), 3. other (like e.g.: deep erosive and erosional-denudation valleys, erosive forms of groundwater or 1st order watershed between the Odra and Parsęta catchments). The purpose of the geosites characteristics in this paper is to support the development of geotourism in the peripheral tourist area.

It has been shown that the most disadvantageous air quality conditions in the cities listed above are on the days with air inflow from south-east, and the most advantageous on the days with advection from north-west. This dependence is particularly evident in the case of pollution with sulphur dioxide, especially in the cold half-year.

This paper outlines a new approach to reconstructing Vistulian ice sheet limits in NE Poland and adjacent areas of Lithuania and Belarus. It is based on geological investigations of landforms and deposits either of a hypothetical boundary to the Vistulian ice sheet limits. The main conclusions are: 1 - the area was covered twice by the Vistulian ice sheet; the first time during the Świecie Stadial (67-50 ka BP) and the second time during the Main Stadial (24-12 ka BP); 2 - the limit of the older stadial was farther to the south a that of the younger one; 3 - due to covering of the Eemian sediments by the ice sheet of the Świecie Stadial the limit of the Vistulian Glaciation has moved about 15-20 km southwards.

Opis:
The latest Ordovician is marked by a severe climate change, the Hirnantian glaciation. This climatic event affected many marine taxa including ostracods. Rich and abundant ostracod assemblages of the Baltic Palaeobasin were severly impoverished. Many of the typical pre-Hirnatian warm-water ostracod species died out, but also some distinct, cold-water species appeared. Two very different but likely coeval latest Ordovician ostracod assemblages are recorded in the Baltic countries and north-eastern Poland. The latest Ordovician Estonian Shelf (inner ramp) is characterized by the Medianella aequa association whilst sections in the Livonian Basin (middle to outer ramp) reveal the Harpabollia harparum association that is thought to represent a cold-water assemblage belonging to the Dalmanitina-Hirnantia Fauna sensu lato. A transitional assemblage composed of a “species mixture” of typical Hirnantian cold-water and some pre-Hirnantian warm-water ostracod species is described for the first time from the Kętrzyn IG1 borehole, north-eastern Poland. The assemblage is dominated by Cryptophyllus pius sp. n. The genus Cryptophyllus is rare in the two other well-known assemblages. The discovery suggests that marginal parts of the Baltic Palaeobasin could serve as a kind of refuge for the last representatives of the ostracod faunas of the inner shelf of Baltic Palaeobasin. The Hirnantian assemblage is replaced by the low-diversity recovery assemblage that is dated as late Hirnantian-Silurian in Estonia and other areas. This suggests that the position of the systemic boundary in the Kętrzyn borehole and elsewhere in north-eastern Poland should be re-evaluated.
