Nonylphenol (4-NP) is a xenobiotic classified as an endocrine disrupting compound with an ability to interfere with hormonal systems of numerous organisms including humans. It is widely distributed not only in aquatic but also in terrestrial systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of cosmopolitan fungus Metarhizium (commonly persistent in soil as a facultative insect pathogen, controlling populations of arthropods in natural environment) to degrade 4-n-nonylphenol. All isolates examined in this work were identified to a species rank based on five, independent genetic markers. Among eight Metarhizium strains; six of them have been identified as M. robertsii, and two others as M. brunneum and M. lepidiotae. All investigated Metarhzium isolates were found to eliminate 4-n-NP with significant efficiency (initial xenobiotic concentration 50 mg L-1). The degradation process was very effective and at 24h of incubation 50-90% of 4-n-NP was eliminated by certain strains, while extended incubation resulted in further utilization of this compound. At the end of the experiments 64-99% of 4-n-NP was removed from the culture medium. Additionally, in all tested cultures three major metabolites were detected: 4-hydroxybenzoic acid; 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid and 4-hydroxyphenylpentanoic acid. The obtained results indicate that Metarhizium sp. possesses an ability to degrade NP and can serve as a potential candidate for further biodegradation studies.

The most significant source of environmental pollution derived from perilous wastes is the circumstantial and intentional emancipation of specific industrial wastes including resistant and/or toxic pollutants to natural environments. Although, biological treatment methods have been commonly found as most effective alternatives in the removal of persistent compounds in industrial wastewaters, they require some increase for obtaining acceptable removal efficiencies, due to the presence of refractory or toxic compounds in the wastewaters. In this study, the use of surfactant of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) in the removal of persistent organic pollutants by biological treatment processes was investigated as an enhancement technique. The application of surfactants can enhance soil and groundwater remediation by increasing contaminant locomotion and solubility to ameliorate the performance of practical conventional remediation technology and by barricading the departure of contaminants to speed the rate of biodegradation of contaminants in environment. The proven effectiveness of surfactants in soil and groundwater remediation has been considered reasonable to expect that surfactants can also enhance the removal of persistent organic pollutants in wastewaters. Different concentrations of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) (1000, 1500, 2000 ppm) were tested to optimize biosurfactant-enhanced degradation of persistent pollutants in wastewaters. The results of this study demonstrate that the biodegradation of persistent organic pollutants in wastewaters is elevated by the use of biosurfactants. The principal mechanism that raises the biodegradation is the augment solvability of poorly soluble compounds in the wastewater. According to the results of this study, it can be anticipated that biosurfactant-enhanced degradation would result in faster and more complete degradation.

Opis:
In this work, low rank coal was used for the removal of nonylphenol ethoxylate with fifteen ethylene oxide groups (NPEO15) from aqueous solutions at different contact times, temperatures, and initial adsorbent concentrations. The adsorption isotherms showed good fit with the Langmuir equation. Maximum adsorption capacities calculated at 308, 318, and 328 K were 23.64, 29.41, and 35.71 mg g–1, respectively. The changes in the free energy of adsorption (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) were calculated in order to predict the nature of adsorption. The results of the thermodynamic analysis indicated that a spontaneous process took place, driven synergistically by both enthalpy and entropy. The adsorption kinetics of NPEO15 were consistent with a pseudo-second order reaction model. XPS results showed that the oxygen functional groups on the low rank coal surface were significantly covered by NPEO15. Furthermore, while the content of C–C/C–H functional groups increased significantly, that of C–O functional groups decreased after absorption. These results clearly indicate that low rank coal is more hydrophobic and displays better floatability.

Celem pracy było określenie indukcji mikrojąder w retikulocytach i erytrocytach polichromatycznych myszy pod wpływem subchronicznej ekspozycji na promieniowanie X, nonylofenol (NF) lub na skojarzone działanie obu czynników. Myszy Pzh: SFIS narażane były przez 8 tygodni, 5 razy w tygodniu. Dawki wynosiły 0.05 Gy lub 0,10 Gy promieniowania X, 25 mg/kg mc lub 50 mg/kg mc nonylofenolu, a w przypadku skojarzonego działania 0,05 Gy + 25 mg/kg mc NF lub 0,10 Gy + 50 mg/kg mc NF. Zarówno promieniowania X, jak i NF działając oddzielnie indukowały powstawanie mikrojąder w retikulocytach i erytrocytach polichromatycznych myszy. Skojarzone działanie obu czynników w retikulocytach krwi obwodowej oraz w erytrocytach polichromatycznych szpiku kostnego indukowało zwiększoną częstość występowania mikrojąder w porównaniu do efektów działania każdego z czynników oddzielnie. W retikulocytach szpiku kostnego skojarzone działanie obu czynników w małych dawkach (0,05 Gy + 50 mg/kg mc NF) powodowało zwiększenie efektu mutagennego. Natomiast, w przypadku skojarzenia obu czynników w większych dawkach (0,10 Gy + 50 mg/kg mc NF), nonylofenol może wywierać efekt ochronny w stosunku do DNA retikulocytów powodując zmniejszenie uszkodzeń indukowanych przez promieniowanie X.
The aim of the research was to investigate the level of micronuclei induction in reticulocytes and polychromatic erythrocytes of mice following subchronic exposure to X-rays, nonylphenol (NP) or to a combination of both. Male mice Pzh:SFIS were exposed during 8 weeks, 5 day per week to doses 0.05 Gy and 0.10 Gy of X-rays, 25 mg/kg mc and 50 mg/kg bw of nonylphenol as well as to 0.05 Gy + 25 mg/kg bw NP and 0.10 Gy + 50 mg/kg bw NP for combined exposure. Both X-rays and NP, acting alone induced micronuclei in reticulocytes and in polychromatic erythrocytes of mice. Combined X-rays-NP exposure of peripheral blood reticulocytes and bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes caused enhanced frequency of micronuclei compared to the effect of each agent alone. In bone marrow reticulocytes, combined exposure in lower doses (0.05 Gy + 25 mg/kg bw NP) induced enhanced mutagenic effect. Contrary, after combined exposure to both agents in higher doses (0.10 Gy + 50 mg/kg bw NP), nonylphenol may protected DNA of reticulocytes against damage induced by X-rays.
