Opis:
Today sex is no longer considered only as a biological feature. Being a woman or a man does not just mean having particular anatomy. Femininity and masculinity in the modern discourse are more general concepts, considered biological, social and cultural sex. When it comes to communication, Nęcki [1996] states that among the types of conversation we distinguish the verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal (linguistic) communication is the process of exchanging information between people through the system of audio or graphic signs called language. R. Jacobson [1960] singled out several elements of linguistic communication, characteristic for all speech acts: sender - context - contact - the message. Oral communication is the most common way of transmission of meaning between people. Nonverbal communication is mainly our language: of the body, time, space and appearance. The essential elements of nonverbal communication include gestures, facial expressions, posture, touch, communication distance zone, smell, eye contact, and even appearance. Nonverbal communication is a mirror image of our attitude, lived emotional states and material status. The present study aims at examining the influence of gender on verbal and nonverbal communication as well as the existing relationship between them.

Opis:
This paper draws attention to the role of nonverbal communication in the process of simultaneous interpreting. The theoretical basis is provided by the phe-nomenon of audiovisual integration: the ability of the human brain to incorporate both verbal and nonverbal signals into comprehension. Referring to previous works by F. Poyatos, S. Viaggio and K. Seeber, the author attempts to distinguish core functions of nonverbal signals in simultaneous interpreting and to analyse the model of cognitive resource footprint by K. Seeber. Additionally, theoretical and practical ramifications of taking nonverbal signals into consideration for the psychology and quality of work of simultaneous interpreters are pinpointed.

Family is the basic and immediate environment of human life, in which one becomes a person. It is in that social circle that all of the most important needs – existential, conscious and emotional – are being fulfilled. The mutual understanding of the family members creates a plane for integration. A feeling of community is constructed upon it. Interpersonal relationships called social relations are becoming important to everyone. Their character and strength of bond vary. The underlying powers are also diverse. The family as a unique social group has its own codes of communication, including a nonverbal code. Its understanding and correct decoding is made possible through social experience originating in a common circle. Direct contact dominates in this type of communication, with the phatic function being the most important one. Communicating in this way bears a strong emotional charge, which makes it the best means for transferring values. Competence of the users is shaped by the emotional bond between the members of the family.

Introduction: Sending and receiving non-verbal messages between the doctor and the patient is very important and it has an influence for the quality of health care. The aim of present studies was to determine the influence of some non-verbal communication factors including modern technology using by doctors for patient’s satisfaction after the examination. Materials and methods: We have asked 597 patients. We have used NDEPT Standard Scale - (Nonverbal Communication in doctor – elderly patient transactions: Development of a tool). The authors of the scale let us use it in Poland. Results: Patients were satisfied with the examination in following situations: during the examination they could see the telephone, computer, medical items and other equipment; the distance between the doctor and the patient was less than 61 cm and there were no physical obstacles; during the examination the doctor was face to face to the patient (angle 180 or 90) and he was using gestures; the eyes of the doctor were in the same line as the eyes of the patient. Conclusions: The skill of the right communication is an important factor in medicine, but it is often underestimated. But we must know that apart from knowledge the efficiency of therapy and the efficiency of diagnostics depend on the right relation between doctors and patients. Skills which are necessary to the right interaction between the doctor and the patient are usually nonverbal.

IntroductionPatient’s confidence is very important in patient – doctor communication. It is very vital when we talk about efficient medical care because it can improve this care significently. It is particularly important for people who can not contact with it easily. Thanks to watching relations between patient and doctor we can get to know the way the patient judges references of the doctor during his professional activities. The aim of the thesisThe aim of these studies was to estimate the level of patient’s confidence after the last medical appointment. The studies were made with the help of Anderson and Dedrick scale. ResultsPatients were satisfied after the appointment when during the examination they could see a telephone and a computer on the desk, medical equipment and other medical things. The doctor was closer than 61 cm from them and patients could not see any physical barriers. During the examination the position of the doctor was open, he used gestures and he was sitting face to face to the patient (angle 180° or 90°). His eyes were at the same level as patient’s eyes. ConclusionsThe ability of proper communication with the patient is a very important element of medical care. However, it is often underestimated. But efficiency of therapy and efficiency of diagnostics depend on these factors.

Opis:
In my investigation, I worked with 6 persons with diagnosed aphasia. I introduce some possible perspectives on the exploration of the extent of speech damage in persons with aphasia and the various ways in which they substitute for language deficiency with the aid of gestures. From the viewpoint of data processing methods, on the one hand, I explore the parameters of spoken language, such as the quantity of words, and, on the other hand, the parameters of gestures, such as the quantity of gestures, diversity of gestures, etc. In aphasic persons speaking Czech, I verify the following assumption established by Jakob et al. (2011): the more speech-limited an aphasic person is, the more gestures he/she produces during the interpretation of a story. It was found that the number of words produced by aphasic persons varies, partially dependent on the specific type of aphasia. This is particularly true on both ends of the scale – people with large speech distortion use the highest quantity of gestures, people with low speech distortion use gestures to a lesser extent. Within the classification of semantic gestures, I focus particularly on iconic and deictic gestures. In addition, I presume that symbolic gestures (i.e. emblems) do not occur in aphasic persons’ speech, because aphasic persons prefer gestures that display the plot in the most concrete way. My data correlate with other studies dealing with this topic – aphasic persons do use gestures intentionally to substitute for their verbal deficiency. At the same time, they mostly use very concrete (iconic) gestures, which enable them to transmit a large volume of information.

Opis:
In Europe, the population of people over 60 years old has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Due to the demographic changes, in Poland, the world of marketing seems to discover the purchasing power of the elderly. Seniors become not only the receivers but also the senders of advertising messages. In order to sell a product, ad makers present people who are supposed to be liked, trusted, identified with and finally followed. In a press advertisement, to which an average consumer devotes 1.5 seconds, the picture is of top priority. The present research aims at analyzing the image of elderly women in press advertisements on the basis of their physical appearance, the context of the depicted situation, their clothes, facial expressions, eye-contact, and other visible traits. The survey study was conducted among young people to see the difference in their perception of elderly women in the pictures illustrating press advertisements for different products. The research results show how the positive image of the elderly in advertising can be created.

Numerous studies have shown that people are more likely to fulfill requests made by a stranger when he or she touches their arm or forearm slightly while asking. In Poland, however, where male homophobia is widespread, interpersonal touch decreases compliance when man touches another man. It has also been demonstrated in previous studies that highly homophobic male participants are especially unwilling to fulfill requests while touched. In this paper the hypothesis that also confederates’ homophobia create an additional factor inhibiting compliance with request formulated by men touching other men was tested in two experiments. No relations, however, was found between confederates’ level of homophobia and participants’ reaction.

The aim of this paper is to examine the gesture of clasping someone’s knees in act of supplication, which occurs several times in the Iliad. The singer applies this gesture, which must have been well known to the Homeric public, into the crucial and highly emotional scenes of the epic. The gesture of clasping someone’s knees originates from the battlefield and occurs in a variety of forms within the narrative. The paper traces the multiformity of the gesture and its evolution in oral poetry. It could be considered as a ritual gesture with a forceful persuasive power: one may state that the effective plea of the epic hero ought to incorporate the supplicant’s gesture.

From all the examples of nonverbal behaviour it has been scientifically proved that gestures reflect human thoughts and mental operations. Gestures project meanings that are stored in image schemas. Those mental representations are shaped by culturally determined experience. The aim of this article was to delve into the issue of the cross-cultural differences in nonverbal behaviour with the par-ticular focus on gestures from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. It was also of my interest to identify and categorise gestures as regards their universal and/or culture specific nature and create a background for possible further research.

The aim of this text is to analyse discrepancies between the verbal and nonverbal components of speech and to present nonverbal symptoms of emotionaltension that may signalise lying. The text considers selected problems of nonverbal communication, such as types, functions, relation to speech (especiallyfalsification), and credibility of nonverbal components compared with verbal ones. The notion of a lie is presented, also in relation to age and gender, and there are shown various examples of nonverbal (and paralingual) signs of emotion, identified by researchers, which may be associated with lying. Also discussed are cases of nonverbal leakage and intentional lying with the use of emblematic gestures, and some examples of some nonverbal reactions to signs of deception are also given.

Opis:
One of the most important nonspecific pedagogical factors is the attitude of a teacher which presents especially credibility, self-confidence, commanding sympathy and empathy as well as interpersonal and physical attractiveness. The use of nonverbal signals presenting nonverbal straightforwardness is helpful to demonstrate these attitudes. It is expressed by frequent smiling to students, maintaining the eye contact, using friendly gestures and variety of vocal signals (differentiation of voice, avoiding the monotony), leaning forward to the students, relaxed posture, using the touch, the personal space and physical factors of a classroom (e.g. equipment, seating arrangements). Teachers who use honest and frank gestures are perceived as a more efficient than teachers who prefer using nonverbal behaviour showing less straightforwardness. Teachers using gestures of frankness are not only given more sympathy by patients but they are also perceived as a more authentic ones and having the ability to understand better the feelings and emotions of students.
